Ο παγκοσμίου φήμης Κινέζος καλλιτέχνης και ακτιβιστής Ai Weiwei ταξιδεύει εδώ και μερικές εβδομάδες στην Ελλάδα, με σκοπό να καταγράψει με τον τρόπο του την προσφυγική κρίση. Έχει στήσει το δικό του στούντιο στη Λέσβο και προετοιμάζει μια σειρά από μνημεία προς τιμή των μεταναστών. Στη συνέντευξη τύπου που έδωσε σχετικά, ο καλλιτέχνης δήλωσε: "τα μνημεία θα τιμούν την ανθρώπινη προσπάθεια και δοκιμασία [...] την προσπάθεια των παιδιών, των γυναικών και των ανδρών, των ηλικιωμένων που θυσιάζουν τα πάντα για ένα αβέβαιο μέλλον. Είναι άνθρωποι που φτάνουν υπό εξαιρετικά δύσκολες συνθήκες για να σώσουν τις ζωές τους." 

Γνωστός για τον ιδιαίτερα ενεργό προσωπικό του λογαριασμό Instagram και την έντονη σχέση του με τα social media γενικότερα, o Weiwei ανεβάζει καθημερινά φωτογραφίες με ομάδες εθελοντών και πρόσφυγες, ώστε να δώσει όσο το δυνατόν μεγαλύτερη έμφαση και δημοσιότητα στην τεράστια αυτή ανθρωπιστική κρίση, με σκοπό να ευαισθητοποιήσει την Ευρώπη και τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο. Συγκινημένος από τη στάση των Ελλήνων απέναντι στο προσφυγικό, ο Weiwei δήλωσε υπερήφανος για τη χώρα μας η οποία "αγκάλιασε τους πρόσφυγες, δεν τους έδιωξε", σημειώνοντας ότι γι’ αυτό ο ίδιος βρίσκεται εδώ. 

Εκτός από τον Κινέζο καλλιτέχνη, και άλλες προσωπικότητες διεθνούς ακτινοβολίας έχουν σπεύσει να βοηθήσουν τους πρόσφυγες, όπως οι ηθοποιοί Mandy Patinkin, Vanessa Redgrave και Susan Sarandon. Άλλωστε, όπως πολύ σωστά δήλωσε η Sarandon πρέπει όλοι, από κάθε γωνιά του κόσμου να καταλάβουμε το μέγεθος και την επιρροή του τεράστιου αυτού προβλήματος: "The international community must see what is happening in this corner of the world. These people should stop being 'somebody else' [...] we must stand by them and support them."
