Qifrey's Atelier:

It's just 2 gay dad's doing their best to raise 4 preteen girls. They teach them magic, and how to cook, and that they are so very loved, no matter what.

Supposedly Qifrey is the magic teacher assigned to these four girls, and Olruggio's job is to keep an eye on Qifrey. The girls stay at Qifrey's Atelier (basically like a tiny school) and they live there. HOWEVER, ACCORDING QIFREY HIMSELF (and many of the other kids and Olruggio) THEY CONSIDER THE ATELIER TO BE "HOME". Olruggio and Qifrey act as paternal figures and basically raise them. They live on the countryside, despite living in cities being the norm. Olruggio does his job very poorly because of his bias towards Qifrey, being his roommate/best friend/husband, every shady thing that Qifrey makes he lets it slide. There's also have a whole spin off dedicated to them cooking nice meals for the girls. They also have a pet: a fluffy small creature known as brushbug.

So they are basically a found family of gay cottagecore witches.

Treasure Hunters:

Their friendship is so poignant. Fox is a human shapeshifter (guess what animal she changes into) who spends a lot of time in her animal form -which makes her age quicker as an human- who got injured as a kid as she was fleeing from her abusive family. She was discovered by Jacob who delivered her from the trap (she was in her vixen form) and they became friends. The thing is, Jacob isn't from Mirrorworld. He's from our world and he shared his life between the two until some bad stuff happens and his two worlds collide.

All the books have fairy tales elements (Jacob and his brother Will are named after the Grimm Brothers, Mirrorworld is full of fairy tales stuff, Jacob's always after treasures such as The Glass Slipper and Rapunzel's hair, Bluebeard plays an important role at some point, etc)

It's also a very long slowburn (resolved toward the 60th chapter of the third book of the -of yet unfinished- series, which was published um… five years after the first one ? I read the 1st towards the start of middle school and the 3rd in the middle of high school, I think. Mirrorworlders are really patient)

The book has illustrations by the author, of both of them separately but not together

William took me to the top of a tower that overlooked the city of London.

William: A nice view, isn't it?

(It’s so high up… it’s kind of scary.)

The familiar streets of London below us, and the broad sky above our heads.

The breeze blowing against my skin felt great.

Kate: … This place is wonderful. Is coming here something you like to do?

William: Yeah. I sometimes spot interesting things when looking at the city from up here.

William: I notice what’s new, what’s no longer there, and evidence.

Kate: Oh… you’re right. I can see a newly opened restaurant that I never noticed before.

William: I don’t recommend eating that restaurant’s kidney pie.

Kate: Eh, why is that?

William: … You want to know?

Kate: … I have a feeling you might say something scary, so nevermind.

William: Then that’s too bad. It’s a fairly enjoyable story.

Kate: I knew it'd be scary story…

(This feels strange.)

(I can’t believe I’m laughing and chatting about the city with someone I was afraid of.)

If we part ways before the “mission”, I’ll definitely only have pleasant memories from today.

However, my eyes suddenly stopped on an alley — and a shadow fell over my heart.

Kate: … I used to love passing through that alley while making deliveries, there are many ateliers there.

William: Ah… I’m rather “familiar” with that place.

Kate: It’s amazing, right? Whenever I looked through the doors and windows, it felt like looking into a jewellery box. But…

William: Is there something bothering you?

Kate: One of the ateliers provides meals for the underprivileged, so that they can enjoy art too…

Kate: Many children often gather there. I found myself stopping to look at them whenever I passed by while making deliveries.

Kate: And… at sunset, I would see some large items being transported in and out.

Kate: … I think they were plaster figures, or something like that…

Kate: Something feels off about it.

William: “Something feels off”, you say?

Kate: That was rude of me, huh. Those could've been artworks…

William: Not necessarily.

William: In this world, there is no absolute good, nor is there absolute evil. There’s no person who shouldn’t be doubted at the start.

William: What you’re feeling is your truth, right?

Kate: …

I was a little taken aback by the straightforward affirmation.

It was only then I realised I had been denying my own feelings.

(William seems like a very carefree person… living life as he pleases.)

(... That’s why he accepts other people's hearts as they are.)

A feeling that was neither envy nor adoration sprouted in my heart.

William: … I’ll count that as the second piece of information you’ve shared with me.

Kate: Hm? Oh…

(Right, our deal is to exchange three pieces of information and I’ll be freed… I completely forgot about that.)

(Moreover, I’ve never told anyone about that… let alone my boyfriend.)

William: Now… Kate.

William gazed at me alluringly.

William: What’s the second thing you want to know about me?

(What I want to know…)

Kate: What do you think of… when you look at this view?

William: Let me see…

William’s eyelashes were downcast as he looked at the city of London.

The sight of his silver hair swaying in the gentle breeze was almost impossible not to fall in love with.

William: The streets, the people, everything that’s unfavourable is hidden somewhere in a dark corner.

William: I’m dying to find out what those are.

Kate: Why on earth would you…?

William: … If those things are like lovely hidden desires, I want to lure those out and cherish them.

William: But if they're evil to me — I’ll fight them with evil.

I instantly accepted the answer he unhesitantly gave me.

As a member of Crown, William knew many things about the city, and not just the pretty things.

He continued to face what laid beyond the things he had discovered.

(I want to see the same things William sees.)

That thought came to my mind unnoticed.

William: … It’s almost time. The sky is starting to get dark.

Kate: …!

William: You should exchange a third piece of information with me soon if you don’t want to accompany me on my mission.

(Avoidable dangers should be avoided, but…)

William: What do you plan to do, Kate?

(I won’t be able to truly get to know him unless I step into the darkness.)

Kate: I’ll exchange that third piece of information with you… after the mission.

William: …

William smiled at me in silence as if he had anticipated that response.

And then, the sun set—

We visited a museum where an exhibition was being held.

(Looks like we can’t enter without an invitation…)

William: No need to be so tense. Relax.

(How can I relax when you're looking at me like that…)

There were people who acknowledged him and addressed him as “Earl”, and some who only watched him from afar.

Everyone was looking at William with fascination and enthusiasm, paying little to no attention to the exhibits.

William: They’re just staring. You can’t kill someone by looking at them.

Kate: I know, but…

(I’m worried that someone will come stab me saying something like “you’re unworthy of being William’s girlfriend”... that sort of thing.)

Kate: Can you carry out your mission if you’re at the centre of attention…?

(Crown’s missions are national secrets, there should be absolutely no witnesses.)

Wiliam: Yes, of course.

Kate: R-Really?

(Whenever William nods, it makes me feel like nothing is impossible.)

William: You don’t have to be so worried. Just keep your head up and act confident.

William: Rest assured, I won’t let anyone lay a finger on my lover.

William kissed my hair in a natural manner.

(... My heart will never be able to calm down if this man becomes my real boyfriend.)

I was well aware that we were only pretend lovers, but I felt an irresistible attraction to his whispering.

A while later, the noble who was the exhibition’s curator started introducing the various exhibits—

The moment the introductions were over, the place turned into a venue for a standing buffet party.

(Still no movement. I wonder what kind of mission this is… oh?)

(The number of people kind of… decreased. Did many of them leave immediately after viewing the exhibits?)

William: … My lovely Kate.

Kate: It’s embarrassing to hear you address me that way…

William: Ahaha, your ears are red. Adorable.

William hugged me by the shoulder and whispered in my ear.

William: Can we have some time alone? Let’s leave the party…

William: “To a place no one can see”.

(...!)

I looked at him with a start when I heard the words that sounded like a signal to make me an accomplice.

(That must mean… we’re starting the mission.)

I nodded quietly and William narrowed his red eyes, pleased with my response.

William: Well then, shall we?
