#atla au ideas

Hello @juniperhillpatient how are you doing?
So I just thought of a “role reversal” Azutara au question.
To provide context: Many (but not all) Azutara story start of (or gradually show) Azula and Katara on opposite sides. Either in morals or faction in both canon and au. Until they both do an ooopsie and fall in love with their mortal enemy (each other) and eventually join the good side. To both serve the good and be together. Or at least what they believe to be the good. That’s a simplification but it (hopefully) gets my point across.
It is often in these scenarios that Katara starts off on the more morally just side and Azula less so. Considering canon and all. Through of course everything is more nuanced than that simplification, it does serve the purpose of my ask.
Question: can you think of any AU ideas where Azula stars of on the more “morally righteous” (if such a thing even exist in actuality) side? Though really Azula is only on the “just” side by chance. And Katara on the more villainous side? And Katara has to overcome her own hurdles to join the “good guys”. Their personalities are in tact, Katara is just very misguided or just loyal to the wrong people.
An example could be found in the Districted Reality au. Where we had a “good” Azula and an “evil Katara (though no Ty still kept their canon personalities intact). Again though, such terms are oversimplifications.
Oh yes I’m so onboard 🤩 You know, I don’t always read enough fic much as I’d like to read more tbh because - well - you know not enough hours in the day haha - so I’ll be honest I haven’t read anything like what you’re describing although I’m sure it’s out there!
But I do like the idea as long as it ultimately stays true to the characters. I could certainly see Katara getting pushed to the “dark side” under the right circumstances. Say she loses more people - if Aang died & the war was lost -or in literally any AU if Sokka dies - I could see Katara getting pulled into a dark rebel side by someone like Jet or Hama. Or if we wanna go full AU what if the water family were vampires or werewolves or something & she’s loyal to her family & species even though they’re technically evil to humans? Ooh what if Azula’s family demon hunters in an AU like that? (Okay waaait yeah that’s totally something I might write someday actually…)
And Azula’s whole thing is loyalty. She was indoctrinated to the wrong side. What if she was born on a more righteous side? That could certainly be interesting. For me, Ozai has to be a manipulative toxic fucker in every AU or Azula’s character changes too much fundamentally for me. Just a preference thing. But Ozai could totally be on the right side of a conflict & still suck on an interpersonal level in an AU & I’d be down for exploring that.
Oh! Or what about a Descendants type AU? You know how the “heroes” realize they’re kinda wrong to banish the “villains” families & shun them by the end of the series & neither side is perfect? Something like that could also be cool although IDK Descendants is already basically Disney movie fanfic so maybe an AU of it couldn’t work for anything else 😂
Anyway yes! My thoughts are rambly I got nothing specific right now but I like your concept 😊

Concept: Fire Lords traditionally dress like the stages of the sun to match their reign.
When Zuko is first crowned, he dresses in the colours of dawn. Bright yellows and pinks and even purples. He starts to wear more traditional crimson-and-gold robes after a few years, the colours of midday when Agni is at his strongest. And towards the end of his reign, when he's getting ready to pass the crown onto Izumi, he starts dressing like the setting sun.

AU where the first time Zuko fights Aang on the ship when the Avatar's escaping, Aang accidentally energy bends Zuko.
Zuko is no longer a Fire Bender.
Zuko is now an Air Bender.
Zuko is also Freaking The Fuck Out, and so is Aang.
"Change it back, change it back!"
"I don't know how! I don't know what I did!"
"Then learn! Fix this!"
Meanwhile, Iroh is internally screaming because yeah, this is a death sentence for his nephew.
Sokka and Katara are just. Hanging out. Staring at each other and then the crew.
Everyone's confused. The crew just...slowly edging away to get back to steering the ship and laze around and stuff.
Katara knows it's a weird Avatar thing Aang did.
Sokka has now formulated a conspiracy theory that Zuko was only pretending to bend Fire the entire time.

man, all you zutara guys are way better at this shipping thing than me. i read through like ninety different metas about the symbolism of the colors associated between the two, the fact that the two of them are the emotional story arc of ATLA, and how their romance falls more into the canon themes of the franchise.....
and then i'm here like, he took lightning for her and she was aang's mom in an episode. i'm sold.

Hear me out, Actor/Modern AU Zukka where Sokka has an editng acc that's just Zuko thirst edits and he constantly has the caption as something like "He's my bf fr" or "love my man♥︎♥︎" and ppl think he's just some random Zuko simp but in reality he is THEE Zuko simp
Another funny thing would be if Zuko knew of the acc (maybe even followed it back) but didn't know it was Sokka until he accidently found him logged into the acc or something

Katara's Lightning: waterbending technique
Part 1
Tumblr media
Book 3 provided some very good ideas for alternative uses of waterbending. Everyone knows bloodbending, one of the most powerful and conceptual techniques. In principle, I think the episode with Katara mastering this ability is the most interesting in the season.
But not only because of bloodbending, but also because of creative ways to obtain water. Get it out of the plants! Or even out of thin air! This opens up so many possibilities that, unfortunately, weren't explored during the season. Maybe this was considered in comics or LoK, but I would like to talk about my version of the development of the concept.
Tumblr media
I was very interested in controlling water in the air. I thought that this was a very revolutionary approach, because you need to get water from essentially nothing, it’s difficult and at the same time convenient. A source of water is always at hand, great!
However, the question is: is this all? Is it really impossible to go further and develop the ability in some other way? Lately I have been very interested in this question, and my reflection has taken me in an unexpected direction.
Tumblr media
I thought about storm clouds. We have already been shown how, together with an airbender, even an inexperienced waterbender can control clouds. However, in the future, when Katara develops her skills, she may well be able to cope with this task herself. Clouds are made of water, and thanks to Hama, she clearly learned to feel the element on a more subtle level and control it even in the air. Making water particles move in the sky might not be that difficult for her.
Tumblr media
And imagine how cool it would look during the invasion of the Fire Nation. If Katara didn’t just fly on Appa and destroy airships one by one, but carried a thunderstorm across the sky, like Storm from the X-Men. Bad weather would prevent the air force from entering the battle, and rain would help the waterbenders on the ground and prevent the firebenders from fighting. This would not only be visually powerful, but also quite useful.
And then I thought about what happens in a thunderstorm. Lightning. The firebending technique can essentially be summoned by the opposite element! This idea amazed me…
Let's start with where lightning comes from in nature. In simple terms, when small water crystals of different sizes move very quickly inside a thundercloud and collide with each other, they form opposite charges in different parts of it. The result is natural lightning. That is, all that is needed is to be able to control the water particles in the air, and, as we know, Katara has learned this.
Imagine if, during the same invasion, she had gotten too caught up in creating a storm. The ice particles collided so quickly that at some point, lightning appeared in time with Katara's movements. Powerful, uncontrollable, dangerous. She and Appa were in the middle of a storm without any preparation or protection, it was scary. But at the same time exciting and intriguing. How does it feel to realize that you can create magic of the opposite element? This can't help but stun you.
But Katara would have to restrain herself. I don't think she liked it, but she didn't want to put Appa and herself in danger. As a result, the thunderstorm she created was not half as powerful as it could have been.
Why is it important? Because in my perception this is not just a technique. I feel like the storm, and in particular the lightning, in this case represents Katara herself in book 3. Remember her rage in the episode "Southern Raiders" when she expressed long-buried feelings about the loss of her mother. Remember how long and painfully she nursed Aang after his death, and subsequently experienced enormous stress in “The Puppetmaster” due to bloodbending. I think Katara needs some emotional release (which she got in "Southern Raiders", but more on that in part two). And lightning could personify that internal energy that strives outward.
Tumblr media
Remember how Katara's anger manifested itself in book 1 through its effect on the water around her? What if it got bigger because Katara grew up as a master?
This time it is very dangerous to give in to feelings like this and turn them into the element, because Katara is not able to control the lightning itself, only create it. This can seriously hurt her herself, as well as those around her, just like words and deep resentments (for example, towards Sokka for not grieving the loss of their mother as much as she does). Therefore, there is nothing left to do but restrain the impulses of rage and irritation.
Perhaps she would even refuse to create new storms. Unfortunately, without someone who could control the direction of the lightning, she cannot guarantee the safety of herself and the people around her. But where can she find such a handyman?..

Avatar au: for whatever reason (Ursa takes off with Zuko to find somewhere safe, Iroh takes him around the world, he gets banished to the pole, etc) Zuko comes to hang out at the South Pole and becomes unlikely friends with the water kids. It obviously starts out rocky, but gets there eventually.

School Spirits Atla Au is really forming & taking root in my brain. (Only in my brain I haven’t started writing this yet). I can’t even help it I was in the shower & a lot of ideas came to me.
I do not control the creative visions okay? They control me. That said - this au will be most closely comparable to my Secrets of Sulphur Springs au in terms of how much it actually is an Au. Buffy Au & TVD Au followed similar plots beats to Buffy & TVD, Wizards of Waverly Place Au actually took place in the Wizards universe with the Russos making cameo appearances & Scream Au is following a very similar format to existing Scream content.
Like Sulphur Springs Au, this School Spirits Au would be inspired more by the premise of School Spirits than anything else. I have my own ideas on how to turn it into a cohesive story as opposed to an ongoing television show just like I did with Sulphur Springs.
Anyway i think it would be called simply “Dead Girls” & here’s the premise - Azula, Katara & Yue are dead. They don’t remember how they died & no one has found any bodies but there was blood found in the school basement. The girls come from different social circles & no one can figure out why they’d even be connected.
Meanwhile the girls enter a world of spirits haunting the school & are left to solve their own murder mystery. Then something incredible happens. Sokka can see the ghost of his sister, Katara.
I have a lot more figured out in my head & my phone’s notes app but I should probably keep it mostly myself 😊 I will say it involves witches, psychic visions, & blood rituals. Again, my idea is to use the premise of School Spirits (sorta meets Ghosts CBS honestly) & tell a story I’ve come up with very much how I did with the premise of Secrets of Sulphur Springs & atla characters. So it would be a very far cry from an exact Au. I have my own ideas & plenty of them.

Katara as a union organizer in a modern AU is quite literally the best idea that's ever come to my mind.
Do I know how union organizing works? Absolutely not.
Am I willing to figure it out so I can write a Zutara fic with it? 100%

I'm currently watching Damsel and having Thoughts so
ATLA AU where the royal fire family angered the spirits by massacring the Air Nomads, so now every generation a member of the royal family must be sacrificed to the dragons to keep them from destroying the Fire Nation. THAT'S the real reason why they have second-born children.
Ozai was born as the sacrificial child. However, everyone assumed that Iroh had killed all the dragons to keep his nation safe - only for word to get out that the dragons are still alive and the spirits are angrier than ever
Azula was technically born as the sacrificial child, but Ozai - also a born-sacrifice - takes one look at her bending talent and sends Zuko in her place.
Zuko was sent to be sacrificed but ends up learning from the dragons instead
