✎ how do you think readers would guess a fic was yours if you posted anonymously?

okay i actually know for a FACT from prior anonymous exchanges in which my friends also participated that my dead giveaway is talking about a song somewhere in the author's notes, HAHA. or, for "full" fics, using an epigraph. which honestly tracks. every fic i've ever written has some sort of musical backbone, somewhere. and i can't resist sharing it! it makes me feel like i can help a reader understand my feelings better... i'm not sure how to describe it. but i have actually had to leave author's notes blank when writing for someone who might know me because otherwise i will just be like THERE'S A MOUNTAIN GOATS SONG FOR THIS.

stylistically i have no idea. i actually don't know, still, what makes my style mine—the stories/narratives, sure, but the prose is still a mystery. i'm sure i have some idiosyncrasies that other people could see if they looked!

i do also remember getting roasted once for never writing fics where anybody kisses... i think this could still give me away

Haha I'm curious, what are your thoughts on Riley Sager? And what do you think of Home Before Dark? I like RS, but I wasn't as into this one lol

I think my tags on that post were a little bit more critical of Riley Sager than I may actually feel about him. Basically my thoughts on him are that I think he's fine, but he's just a little (and sorry that I don't have a better way to say this) r/menwritingwomen for me.

I'm only 17% into Home Before Dark, so I don't really have a formed opinion on it yet. It hasn't been terrible so far, and I'm on track to finish it, but I just haven't read enough yet.

oh man... that'd be a dream come true! i'd need one for the entire Boxer / Trouble Will Find Me albums since those albums convey such clear stories to me and w/ other special songs included. it'd be awesome if we could get some great actors on there 😭😭😭 i'd love to see this so badly but i'll just imagine it 😭

4. what sections of a bookstore do you browse?

ooh this is a tough one; i usually start with new releases and then go to sci-fi/fantasy, horror, YA, and general fiction, and graphic novels if the store has them! i’m also a sucker for the journals section… do i need more? no, but i’ll probably buy one anyway.

9. when do you tend to read the most?

i usually try to read before bed as a way to unwind, but i’ve been trying to wake up a little early to read before i have to leave for work, and it’s been nice! but the trouble is actually putting the book down to leave lol. also if work is slow, i’ll sneak some reading on my kindle app (i read the whole of Spare by Prince Harry during a super slow week at work oops)

oh BOY was i delighted that you asked this one, i have so many options but also i’ve been obsessed with this book since i read it two summers ago.

the amazing adventures of kavalier and clay by michael chabon

summary: in 1939, josef kavalier escapes from prague and the incipient nazi invasion with the help of his mentor and a bit of magic. He arrives in new york at the home of his cousin, sammy klayman, and they become fast friends. sammy and josef, in a burst of inspiration, create the escapist, who can break free of any chains and will fight to save the oppressed people of the world. the escapist is a hit, and josef and sammy—now going by joe kavalier and sam clay—become successful comic artists. then, the u.s. enters the war and everything changes for sam and joe overnight. with their partnership and work torn asunder and their country at war, will kavalier and clay ever be able to recapture the magic of the escapist, or has america changed too much after the war to have faith in truth, righteousness, and maybe even a bit of magic?

this is tied for my favorite book of all time; it’s an epic story of love and loss and friendship, and it changed me to my core. if i believed in choosing just one “great american novel,” this one would be it; it’s been two years and i still think about it almost every day. it will make you cry, but it will change your life. (make sure you check for content warnings—or shoot me a message if you have specific questions—if you want to read this one; there’s a LOT going on).

Here's a snippet from a new fic - enjoy some regency era Heartstopper!

Nick's heart flipped as Charlie's eyes sparkled. He'd been in love with Charlie for as long as he could remember, before he'd even know what the word meant. He used to dream about slipping his hand into Charlie's as they walked, feeling Charlie's fingers against his. 

As he'd gotten older his dreams had evolved into more than simple hand holding but his feelings had never once wavered. Throughout the years no one had ever made his heart race like Charlie, and he was certain no one ever would. 

And he believed that Charlie felt the same. They'd never said the words out loud but there were lingering touches and gazes that lasted longer than they should. When they were younger both had joked about marrying the other, what foods they wanted and who would be invited.

Of course, that was before they understood what marriage was. A declaration of love, yes, but also a contract, a financial decision. It was because of that they could never have what they wanted.

I'm working on a follow up to Electric Feel, so here's kind of a long snippet:

Ronan had learned from what happened with Cabeswater, and Adam doubted anyone unwanted would make it as far as he had.

Or if they'd be able to walk into Lindenmere at all.

A few yards past the reflectionless pond, just past yet another treeline, the slight sinisterness prickling the hairs on Adam's arms sloughed away. Sunlight still didn't reach through the leafy canopy above, but the temperature rose incrementally with every step Adam took, and his scalp warmed through his hair as if sunlight was reaching him. A late spring day cooled by shade and elevation turned into something resembling early summer by the time Adam finally found Ronan---warm but not hot, no hint of humidity, the smell of pollen and leaf mulch hanging in the air. With the way Ronan sat between roots, his back resting against a tree trunk, anyone else would have taken his closed eyes and relaxed shoulders as slumber, but Adam knew better. He'd seen Ronan faking sleep---and really sleeping---enough.

"How long?" Adam asked as he approached Ronan's extended legs and knocked his sneaker against Ronan's boot.

Ronan's thick, dark eyelashes fluttered against his cheeks before he opened his ice blue eyes and looked up at Adam, his movements mirroring the way he'd lazily skewed himself between tree roots as he lifted his arm to look at the watch strapped around his wrist between leather bands.

"An hour," he said as he dropped his arm back to his thigh, a challenge in his eyes as he looked up at Adam once more.

"No, it wasn't," Adam replied, kicking Ronan's boot again. "How long really, Lynch?" He could have very well checked on his own, but Ronan had designated himself as official timekeeper while they'd been planning their excursion, and Adam didn't want to take away his purpose, even if his timekeeping skills seemed to be lacking.

"An hour," Ronan repeated, stretching his leg out to kick Adam's sneaker in return before springing smoothly to his feet. Adam fixed an unimpressed stare on his boyfriend until---finally---Ronan's thin lips curled into a benign smirk and he said, "Forty-seven minutes."

"That's not an hour."

"Close enough."

"It's not," Adam replied. "There's a lot you can do in thirteen minutes."

"Oh," Ronan sidled closer to Adam, stepping over a particularly gnarled root, "I know."

 "This is why they tell us not to date humans. You shouldn't even be here. Why are you still here Charlie?" Charlie had never seen Nick look so distraught. 

When Charlie didn't answer Nick added, "I'll take you home." He started walking towards the car. 

But Charlie didn't move. Nick was opening his door before he noticed. "Come on, promise I won't talk on the way home."

"Ask me again." 

Nick cocked his head, confused.  "Ask you what?"

"Why I'm still here." He took a step closer to Nick. 

The other man sighed. "You don't need to be cruel. I don't need to hear that it's because I'm your ride or some other joke."

Charlie took another few steps closer. "Nick, ask me." He made his voice as earnest as he could. He was practically pleading with him. "Please." 

He threw up his arms. "Fine. Why are you still here?"
