I am not sure of the original source, but it is so simple and clear I love it.

Would you walk up to someone’s wheelchair and try to pet it, poke it, talk to it, ask it’s name etc? I am not a pet, I am a medical device—much like a wheelchair.

So, what do you do? Nothing. Ignore it, and for goodness sake please let the handler go about their business. They just want to do their grocery shopping, physical therapy, watch the movie, get their Starbucks drink, and go about their life.

Once able to get my service dog once in my own place, this is one of my favorite service dog vests!!! I have tried many things to help me with my meltdowns but sometimes stim/fidget toys don't help or I don't have access to my weighted sloth plush or my other stuffed animals that help me soothe myself and I've done so much research and dogs are able to get trained to apply deep pressure to people who are autistic for meltdowns and anxiety. I think it would help me so much as last two times I had meltdowns it was longer than they were prior to getting identified and it was hard to get back to baseline after. My recent meltdown was just on August 2nd and it was in public and I was so overwhelmed and overloaded and couldn't stop crying. For the past 2.5 years Cade has gone directly to his special education classroom in the morning and he would join his General Education classmates later in the morning. We have made some trial schedule changes and this is a big one. Cade has always had a social personality and desire to be around people, BUT he struggles with anxiety and conversation. Charlie not only lessens the anxiety he has, she has given him and his peers a great topic for conversation! Autism and Service Dogs!!

I have an at-home #servicedog, and think that #autismservicedogs can be extremely helpful! I got Mikka for other purposes initially, but have found that she is really tuned in to me. She made me realize a lot more about what I actually needed, and helps me with several things.

This is a hand signal for a command that I taught her, which I call “go scout.” (The TV is on to show that she got no verbal prompt, though she knows both). I think it’s something that could be helpful for many autistics. She gets up and “leads the way” for me to leave my room when I need - like if I’ve watched something creepy on TV, or if I hear a little noise, etc. It’s comforting and makes me feel better about leaving my room, if I’m in a creeped out mood. Having her go “scout” ahead of me is great for #anxiety, and helpful for other reasons, as well.

Wondering if anyone else is #autistic and has a service dog? I really feel like they could help many people, if more knew about them! I also delight in #teaching Mikka silly things...like to play pattycake, receptively label body parts (she knows 9), or roll a giant die😅 She also has a way to say “yes” to a handful of familiar questions (working to expand her working vocabulary), which is one of the best things I’ve taught her. And she loves to learn!!

Let me know if anyone is interested in learning about #SDs and my experience with #ownertraining, how I taught her this task or any others, etc. I’m certainly not a guru of #dogtraining, but I feel like much that I’ve learned can be good supplemental info, or of particular interest to those that with #autism (and, those that care about us, and might want to help us train such tasks!).

what they don’t tell you about owner training an SD: you may have a 3 day migraine and be dumb enough to let your dog burn his paws.
