About UK Garage & Jersey Club Genres

Ternyata ada beberapa musisi K-Pop yang pakai genre UK Garage dan Jersey Club. Ini sekaligus meralat peryataanku kemarin. Walaupun aku sendiri baru benar-benar familiar (atau tertarik) dengan genre ini di tahun 2022. Cuma kalau dari hasil risetku, banyak lagu yang dimasukkan ke genre UK Garage/Jersey Club yang beririsan dengan genre House Club, Pop-Dance, Electro Pop, Breakbeat, Baltimore Club, gitulah~

Karena ingin tahu bedanya UK Garage dengan Jersey Club, aku sampai mendengarkan banyak lagu yang diklaim masuk genre tsb. Hasilnya? Tetap sulit untuk dibedakan. Kayaknya... UK Garage itu lebih clear deh, lebih gampang ditebak daripada Jersey Club. Kalau Jersey Club itu lebih ramai. Tapi gampangnya memang didengar dari ketukannya, sama komposisi musiknya. Asgsgdhdjdkd... sulit menjelaskan. Lol.

Ada yang bilang "Ditto" NewJeans itu Jersey Club, tapi ada juga yang bilang UK Garage. Tapi kalau menurutku, dia masuknya ke Jersey Club. Kalau di album barunya NewJeans, UK Garage itu "New Jeans" & "Cool with You", sementara Jersey Club itu "Super Shy". Memang ketukan UK Garage/Jersey Club itu khas banget sih. Kalau digambarin itu kayak ketukan sepatu di lantai dansa, jadi masuk akal tarian di lagu "Ditto" oleh NewJeans, baik ketukan dan tariannya itu benar-benar saling menggambarkan. Persis!

Anyway, di K-Pop selain NewJeans, BÉBE YANA juga cukup sering main di genre ini. Atau ada f(x) dari gen 2 (make sense karena dulu grup ini dipegang MHJ).

Member LE SSERAFIM cukup percaya diri ketika bilang lagu "Eve, Psyche & The Bluebeard's Wife" akan boom dan banyak yang suka daripada "UNFORGIVEN". Begitupun dengan Jungkook yang optimis dengan lagu "Seven" ketika pertama kali dengar dan ia langsung suka. Contoh lain, Nicki Minaj feat Ice Spice & Aqua "Barbie World" untuk OST Barbie. Atau Drake yang rilis album "Honestly, Nevermind" (2022) dengan genre ini (house club, baltimore club, jersey club, hard techno). Sepertinya genre ini memang lagi naik daun lagi.

⊷ Jiwon is more of a protective yandere so say the least...she knows people aren't the kindest in this world and you were with her since childhood and you comforted her when her father passed, when Eunho Baek confessed to Sumin and when Sumin overall embarrassed her but she was too dense to see through it...

⊷ Jiwon will makes sure any one whom she sees as a threat is somehow suddenly away from you or trapped in a very bad situation, Jiwon can pull a few strings...she's not dumb!

⊷ Jiwon cannot stand Sumin or Minhwan being around you, she will blackmail them and isn't afraid to reveal info to certain people..She definitely got Huiyeong and Jihyeok under her fingers to help her if anything goes wrong.

⊷ Jiwon doesn't know it very well, but she's a rather good manipulator and can use people's words against them, she is absolutely not afraid to manipulate you into depending on her or staying with her.

⊷ Makes sure you're safe at all times, has given tiny trinkets and attached some type of camera to it to see you at all times! She is also kind of a stalker at times to make sure you don't get hurt, she gives your...so she can keep an eye on you.

A Slap Too Far

Summary:

After Jiwon dies, Sumin can only sit frozen and watch her life burn.

Notes:

So I've recently gotten into reading Marry My Husband on Webtoon (I've read it before, just re-reading it) and its mentioned that, in the original timeline, Minhwan goes to jail for murdering her and Sumin deletes social media and stops answering calls. So, I wanted to write something real quick on the shit that goes down. CW: mentions of character death

"...oh no."

Minhwan's voice broke through the sudden silence. Sumin gripped the sheets tighter, her delight at Jiwon's misery being broken by unease at how easily Minhwan had slapped his wife, her head banging against the drawer.

"What? What is it?"

Minhwan reached down. Jiwon was so still and, slowly, Sumin realized that an iron smell was beginning to fill the room. Her heart began to race as his fingers pressed against her neck, clearly feeling for her pulse. "Oh no," he repeated again and she could see the blood drain from his face. "Oh, shit, oh shit, oh shit-"

"What- What-?" Some part of her realized what was happening, all too familiar with that smell, but she refused to believe it. There was no way...

Her boyfriend ignored her questions, rolling Jiwon over on her back. "Jiwon, Jiwon, you stupid idiot, wake up!" He shook her, her best friend's thin body easily jostling. "No, no, you weren't supposed to-" He dropped her, and her head thudded against the floor, splattering...

Blood.

There was more blood.

"...no..."

Sumin sat, frozen. Minhwan ignored her, practically tripping over himself to grab his cell phone. "Hello, 119?! Please, I need an ambulance-" Tears were beading in his eyes. Whether at what little love he still had for Jiwon shining through, or regret at his hasty actions, tears were rolling down his cheeks. "-my wife, she hit her head- I swear I didn't mean to hit her so- Please, she's not moving and there's blood- Please send an ambulance!"

All too soon, sirens began to ring.

And Sumin sat there, frozen.

Her dreams of a happy life, of dancing on Jiwon's grave with Jiwon's husband, burned.

They burned as the paramedics called Jiwon "dead at the scene" and bagged her body.

They burned as the police officers cuffed Minhwan, who didn't even struggle.

They burned as she was yanked from the bed, forced to hastily dress and follow Minhwan.

They burned as Minhwan's parents arrived at the police station, called her a whore and a homewrecker.

Sumin couldn't even muster the ability to act cute at the trial, called upon the stand to provide witness to Minhwan's crime of murder and intention to murder. She was too frozen. As the people stared her down, she found herself admitting to everything- the manipulation to have students bully her, her targeting Minhwan, and Minhwan planning on letting Jiwon waste away and die for the life insurance money. As she admitted to everything, her plan burned.

Her dreams of perfectly sabotaging Jiwon's life, like how she had sabotaged hers, had burned at the last stage.

She wasn't sentenced. How could they? As far as they knew, Minhwan had only confessed his plan about the life insurance a few minutes before he killed Jiwon. But, even as Sumin walked free, she knew her life had utterly been destroyed.

Old classmates called her number, bombarded her email, screamed on social media. How could you, how could you, how could you. She couldn't even find the words to explain that it wasn't her fault that they "misunderstood" her. Nobody would listen to her anyway now, she realized.

The day before she deleted her social media and changed her number, a documentary was presented about the case. Nobody had asked her about it. Instead, she watched as Hiyeon Yu, Juran Yang, Mr. Kim, Eunheo Baek, and others were interviewed.

Only Mr. Kim had said nice things, but then again, he was known as a massive pervert.

The rest said the same thing:

Monster.

And Sumin sat there, frozen, watching as her life burned with one simple slap too far.

I am not caught up on watching marry my husband but when I tell you, I am so so happy for all the love hayoon is receiving for her role. I'm certain everyone hates her guts in this show but there's also an equal amount of people who appreciate how great she is at acting devious and malicious. I can guarantee you that nobody on this website loves song hayoon as much as me, and I've followed her work for the last couple of years both in dramas and in variety and she is the loveliest person no matter where she is. I've waited for her to come back to the acting business, and to star in a mainstream drama and I really hope this is the start of her comeback to the big screen. I urge everyone to watch her in her previous dramas to see exactly HOW phenomenal she is as an actress, and the range she has to be able to play someone like sumin and roles like joo ggibeum or baek sulhee who are complete polar opposites... I absolutely adore hayoon, and everything about her is perfect in my eyes. I love her, and I wish her success and happiness and I hope people can see her in the light that I've always seen her in 🥹

Marry My Husband dream cast

{Note: Just imagine that they're the correct age, or that the makeup artist did their makeup magic.}

Maybe Han Hyojoo as Kang Jiwon. I do think she would execute a bigger transformation. (I like Park Minyoung but she's not tall and looks elfin no matter how they try to frump her up.)

Maybe Park Shinhye or Yoo Inna as Jung Sumin. I would feel more confident about Yoo Inna's acting but I think it would feel like the twist would be more impactful if Park Shinhye did her super naive-looking version of the cute girly character and then had the evil manipulative side. (Actually, I think Song Hayoon wins in terms of casting but I'm new to her so I wouldn't have known to pick her.)

Jung Woosung as Park Minhwan. He's just got big extravert energy, and I could see him playing a shameless cheater. Other actors could pull off this character well, too, but I think most would portray more of a stereotypical sneak while I could see Jung Woosung playing up the audacity.

Won Bin or Lee Jonghyuk as Yoo Jihyuk. Won Bin can pull off a certain introverted masculinity well suited to Jihyuk. Lee Jonghyuk is less chiseled but he looks like he could be related to my dream cast pick for Heeyeon.

Lee Hanee as Yoo Heeyeon. Like look at this pic: she almost has a knowing look like "I got you, bestie," and she looks like she would know how to identify knockoff jewelry. (The actress they chose does have the eyebrows and the youthful enthusiasm down, though.)

Lee Seunggi as Baek Eunho. He's got the cozy childhood friend sort of look. (Lee Gikwang is cute but why the heck does he keep bulging his eyes out? Was he filming for a cop thriller in between Marry My Husband shoots and he forgot he's supposed to be in a romance drama?)

Jin Seoyeon as Yang Juran. Someone who looks sharp enough to harbor suspicions of Manager Kim. Someone who looks like she still has the energy to raise kids. Someone who looks good in a short girlboss haircut! (Gong Minjung's Juran makes looks tired and beat down. I get that her husband is garbage, but the Juran in the webtoon doesn't seem like she's reached such a low point yet.)

Kwon Yul as Manager (?) Lee. At this point it's less dream cast and more me racking my brain for a guy with the right look that's done a decent job in a similar enough character before. But I had to name someone because I think they're trying to rewrite his character with a very different one, Lee Suk-joon, a much older, crabbier-looking guy who has no chemistry with Gong Minjung, and I can't let that slide. here's some random hcs because you're not allowed to be in possession of death:

the one about her brother:

seju was quite close with her older brother sehyun while growing up. they grew apart in when she became a teenager and he was in his early 20s, as so much of her life started to revolve about sumin. sehyun couldn't do anything but watch his sister get dragged into this unhealthy dynamic.

this is also partly why sehyun had so much anger and resentment for sumin after they broke up, and why he attacked sumin to leave scars on her so she would never be able to erase seju from her life.

later on seju realizes that her brother was not trying to be overbearing or judging her, but that he felt responsible for her. although they have several brothers and sisters, they ultimately consider each other their only real siblings.

the one about sleeping:

seju is a very light sleeper. she is both a night owl and an early riser which is not a good combination and because of that she ideally needs to take naps during the day.

she needs the room to be cool so she can cover herself with her sheets at the very least, so the air conditioning is often on.

the one about work:

although her position as president of both hello studios and one hotel are arguably chaebol levels of nepotism, which seju is very self aware of, she actually enjoys her work and is very passionate about it. she is a planner and meticulous about details. she excels and feels at home carefully crafting and aligning every moving part so the entire company structure will work efficiently.

seju is not exactly "career oriented" though, she's not focused or particularly interested in the growing and advancing of her career as much as she is invested in the results of her current work and doing her job well. she realizes this is most likely because she got a huge head start just by virtue of being the daughter of the ceo of a massive conglomerate and it didn't take too many steps to get at the top of the company.

but her results speak for themselves, she has been able to grow and establish the studio as well as revitalized and saved the villa on jeju island. specially in comparison with the many financial / business failures of her older brothers, she is actually good at what she does ⸺ and it caused a lot of animosity amongst the baek siblings.

the one about material gifts:

it's a known fact that seju likes to give expensive gifts to whoever she is dating. however, this is less of a display of wealth to impress or create a sense of dependency and more of a gesture of trust. there's layers to this. her mother came from a very poor background, and she was relentlessly harassed and judged for this when she married seju's father. she ended up being murdered by one of her step-sons just for the perceived threat that she may get any money from her husband.

it is true seju herself didn't grow up poor, in fact she grew up ridiculously rich, but she was made overly aware along every step that she could be thrown out on the street with nothing to her name ever since she was born. her father used his wealth to both compensate for being neglectful and absent, and also to keep her in check. constantly dangling money (and the power that comes with it) over her head and making it impossible for her to walk away and cut ties either way. instead of making her feel financially stable it did the opposite. it proved to her that money is feeble and it holds more value in the power dynamics it evokes in people than what its monetary value really is.

so when she makes big expensive gifts (like gifting sumin a car or buying her an apartment) that is a way for her to say "i know resources can run out and that's scary, and i'm choosing to share mine with you" and that is a sign of trust.
