He'd been like this all day. It was now about half past 3 o'clock, and Barnaby was still pacing around, doing bits of this and that in order to keep his mind busy.

Or rather, distracted.

It was clear to anyone that the man was full of nervous energy, what with the way he fidgeted with his own fingers as he made his way from one room to another... And then another... And then back before, again, to another. He readjusted things that had already been adjusted before, cleaned things that were already shining, and smoothened out carpets and cloths that hadn't a wrinkle on them.

Normally, Basile couldn't care less. Unfortunately, he had recently been discovering that he was capable of more emotions that he'd like. Even more unfortunately, he was beginning to care for the other man.

Plus, this was getting too much.

"Banett, for the love of everything, would you just sit down?" he said more than he asked, exasperation evident.

Something was really bothering his companion, Basile realised, when he did as he was told without putting up even the slightest hint of a protest.

God damn it. Sympathy and compassion were supposed to be Nigel's area.

At a loss but not wanting to sit in the awkward silence he unintentionally created, it was Basile's turn to stand. All Barnaby could hear for the next few minutes was movement in the kitchen, but his eyes remained trained onto the spot in front of him. His fingers still fidgeted, occasionally playing with the fabric of his sleeves.

He barely reacted when the mug of green tea was put onto the table before him, Basile noticed. His pupils had only jerked for a split second before returning to their former position.

So Basile returned to his chair, blatantly staring at the other man in hopes of evoking a reaction.

Slowly, something changed and Barnaby's breathing became steadier. Slowed. Not relaxed, but certainly not as tensed as before.

"Is... This for me?" he mumbled, zombie-like. He was looking at the mug of hopefully-still-warm tea, but otherwise made no other movement.

Basile, resting his cheek on the palm of his hand, sarcastically replied, "No, no. I just really wanted you to be conscious enough to watch me drink lukewarm tea."

A few seconds of silence and zero attempts at movement later, he found himself rolling his eyes and impatiently nudging the mug towards the other. This prompted the man to finally move, robotically cupping it into both hands.

He didn't drink it, but Basile considered it a win anyway.

It was uncomfortable, he found, to be doing this. To make himself available as a listening ear. To hold his hand out for another to grab onto. Yet, he was doing it anyway.

Because he wanted to.

Boy, did he sure miss the days he ran solo.

(But at the same time, not really.)

"Do you ever feel like everything is just too much?" Barnaby asked, disturbing the quiet. His volume was low, not because he was afraid of being loud, but moreso because he was tired. He spoke as if he had just woken up from a slumber that hadn't been at all restful.

Basile decided he hated the question and opted to hum his agreement instead.

Barnaby merely nodded.

Selfishly, Basile thought that Barnaby had no way of knowing exactly how much was too much. The latter hadn't his six centuries' worth of experience, after all.

He hadn't had his entire faith crashing down on him. He hadn't had the rude awakening that existence was completely, painfully meaningless. He hadn't had the dooming sensation that no matter how hard he tried, nothing would change.

Because, Basile thought bitterly, Barnaby still cared.

He continued to work himself to the grave in order to support the people he cared for. He was constantly on the verge of an anxiety attack from how much he piled onto himself. He drank to the point of poisoning his own damn brain to try and make everything more tolerable...

Just so that he could keep on trying.

Basile had only recently started trying again and it hurt. He was jealous of the other's perseverance as much as he reluctantly admired him.

If Barnaby truly knew how much was too much, he would have done the smarter thing and given up like Basile did all those years ago.

And if Basile was as smart as he liked to make himself out to be, he would never have tried again.

random chesa (and simon) headcannons i thought of at work

simon (on the rare occasion that he chooses to) cannot sleep if chesa isn’t somewhere in proximity. he pretends like it’s bc she can wake him if there’s some kind of emergency and that’s what he tells himself.

chesa knows about this habit. so, if she’s anticipating one’s departure from the other, she’ll wear his jackets around base for days at a time. her smell sort of just clings to them.

she only started doing this bc she borrowed his jacket like ONCE and he never stopped wearing it. he will never admit to this, and she will never hold him to an admittance of any kind.

i think i’ve mentioned this before but chesa smells like cigarettes, basil, and pine. though, she’s partial to florals like marigolds and irises.

simon stays at chesa’s place when he’s on leave. he says it’s because she can cook things that are decently edible. but, he goes there even when she’s still on duty and he’s not.

chesa never cries in front of anyone. full stop. simon has seen her with her eyes puffy, and her voice shot from sobbing. but he’s never actually seen tears leave her eyes.

chesa has no particular feelings about tea but she’ll drink it in company with simon on occasion.

while she loves science fiction, she also has a weirdly substantial collection of shakespearean plays at home. her favorite is king lear.

simon absolutely DOGS on her for this. just the prospect that she’s a secret nerd. and that she just has someone’s required reading on hand.

he thought macbeth was kind of funny tho.

out of everyone in the 141, kyle’s the only one who is allowed to borrow her stuff. he’s polite about it, he always asks first. he returns it in a timely manner.

price borrowed a book from her once and it came back with dog ears and she has yet to forgive him for it.

Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine Offers Authentic and Affordable Thai Dishes

There are days when I really crave for Thai cuisine. I really love Thai curries as well as a good hot bowl of Tom Yum soup. I even joined a Thai cooking class a few years ago hoping to improve my culinary skills. Thankfully, it’s so much easier to satisfy my Thai cravings these days since food delivery is always available. I don’t have to order from expensive hotels and Thai restaurants, because I found out that authentic Thai dishes can also be quite affordable at Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine.

From Palawan to Marikina, Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine is a popular restaurant in El Nido that had to suspend its operations when the pandemic started. They recently opened a new branch in Marikina City where they can continue to offer their Thai specialties using authentic Thai spices and ingredients. They are located in Mayor Gil Fernandez Avenue, Marikina and are open daily from 10am to 9pm. I haven’t been able to visit their branch yet, which also has a rooftop al fresco dining area, but I was really happy with my yummy Thai delivery last week.

Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine is actually on WheninManila’s list of 10 Must Try Thai Places for Thai Food Delivery so I was really excited to try it for myself. These are a few of their bestsellers which we had for dinner.

We started with the Yum Woon Sen (P199) for our fresh appetizers. This is a delectable noodle salad with a mix of shrimp, vegetables, and glass noodles tossed with their signature dressing. It’s light and refreshing to eat, a great way to start our Thai journey.

I thought that bagoong was a Filipino ingredient but it turns out that its origins are actually from Thailand. The Bagoong Fried Rice (P199) is one of their traditional dishes using shrimp paste or bagoong mixed with the rice.

Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine’s version comes with green mango slices, onions and egg on the side. But the highlight of the dish is the special caramelized pork that balances the salty notes of the rice. It’s a strong and powerful combination that will satisfy all the bagoong lovers out there.

For our main dishes, we had the Kapraw Gai (P189) or Thai Basil Chicken. This is a stir fried minced chicken cooked with basil leaves to bring out the flavors. The juicy pieces of chicken are good to go with the bagoong fried rice or even just plain steamed rice.

But our favorite dish at Tuk Tuk Thai Cuisine is definitely the Kad Ped Deang (P259) or Red Curry. This colorful beef curry dish is so aromatic and flavorful. You can really taste the authentic spices and ingredients used to create this gorgeous red curry. Place some sauce on top of hot rice and you really have everything you need. This is also available with chicken instead of beef.

Their dishes are very affordable but you still get the quality of a five-star Thai restaurant. I highly recommend giving them a try.
