Fluff-tober Day 2 'Family, Friends, Loved Ones'
Slightly stream of conciousness thing from Foyle's point of view reflecting on Sam and a bond with her. @flufftober
A Daughter He'd Never Had
He had to concede that, he'd had no idea, absolutely none how to deal with Sam Stewart when she strode smartly into his office, and given the over crisp salute of the newly in uniform. A new driver was one thing, but a girl, and one with no experience of the order of the police force, was yet another. A girl who proved to have with romantic-fantastic ideas of detection and uninhibited, uninhabitable, curiosity.
And sharp eyes, quick intelligence, better than many constables (that's why they've stayed constables, or in uniform at least).
And then her father came to Hastings, wanting to take her home. He could understand that, wanting her under your eyes, and safe and sound (he wants the same for Andrew, if he will admit it to himself.) But he minds. Minds as much as his men being taken by the war. Finds himself arguing for her to stay with them.
And because she asked, he let her try to winkle things of Graeme. He's stung when she comes back, rumbled and complaining of being pinched; although she won't say where out-loud, he can guess. It was Sam who called him off a response. It's on good logic but he regrets it all the same, resents the behaviour for being as much against one of his own, as against a woman, and a woman young enough to be Graeme's daughter (or mine). He's sickened, but not surprised, after that, when it all comes out - everything Graeme did to Lucy, and her father's vengence. And in a way, the death to come is more for the poor driver with the wrong name, not the Group Captain. For the law is law, even in wartime, especially in Wartime. He tries not to think of the 'What If?' pushes it into a box and locks the door, even as he lays it to Keller; for Andrew, scapegoated for doing the right thing; for Lucy, for all the girls and women the moralists fret about (and perhaps they're right.)
Somehow, in spite of all of that weight to the contrary, they, he, get to keep Sam in Hastings. His heart drops to his boots when she's bombed out (unhurt, Thank Goodness.) And again when it comes out she's not been promptly re-billited, but is lodging in the cells -the Cells! -at the station. Hang propriety for once, he takes her in, and admist her wave of chatter and observations, finds just how much he has missed having another person mostly in the house, for all these years. Sam is a breath of fresh air, even if overeager.
He tries that with Andrew- injured, alone-and maybe it is 'presumptous', but its the mask she'd puts over the hurt when she'd come back to him, trying to pretend it didn't matter. He thought he'd done better than that with the boy (certainly tried to), and he gives Andrew what-for. Later, months later, he finds out that dressing down may have worked a bit too well.. but he can't mind. Don't count your chickens- but would be nice...
In one timeline, Andrew muffs it, out there in Debden. Why can't his son just stick? He almost wishes Andrew would get leave, so he can have a word. But he doesn't, and Sam seems to move on. In that timeline, the American tells him "The way she talks about you sometimes, you could almost be her father." He tucks that inside, it warms him, but he will not interfere with Sam's choices, she has a mind and a life of her own.
It's horrible seeing her in the hospital bed; drained, so ill and still trying to make light of things with him, trying to be herself. And Elsie Jenkins dead with the same symptoms. He humours her, although it twists his chest.
The infection comes from a station near here
Enough! Enough!! I've been made bend to the war requirements here and there, but not against our own, not against MY own. Not Sam.
"Well, there's been an outbreak of anthrax in Hastings and he's responsible for it. If I'm not in his office within the next two minutes, I'll be back with the army, the police, the Home Guard and the press. D'you feel able to convey this to him at your earliest opportunity?" He says it, and he means it.
Later, afterwards, he'll feel a little bad for the poor sentry who got that earful; a man who was only doing his duty scrupulously, as trained to. But right now, I don't give a forsaken-damn.
The sentry has a heart, or at least an acknowledgment of authority. The CO's a smug blighter puffed with his pride, but the young scientists care more for life than the secrecy.
Sam makes it. Somehow, somehow. Weak, but she's alive. She's alive. He lets himself shake only when he's home alone, relief hammering at him, as it had when Andrew was only knocked about in the landing. Not this time, has the world taken something, not this time.

@redwooding added on another already very long post:
ANOTHER set of questions, which people can ignore or answer: what the hell, Ward sisters? One, about as lazy as a human being can get; one, a truly nasty person, who deserves the purgatory to which she has been consigned; and one, a disorganized slattern. Is this a function of birth order? Their marriages? (Nine kids? Anyone would be overwhelmed. Get off her, Lieutenant Price!) Inborn personalities?
I think it is a mix of personality, circumstance, and birth order.
We know Lady Bertram and Mrs. Price are very similar in disposition, so it's not just the toll of having nine children:
Of her two sisters, Mrs. Price very much more resembled Lady Bertram than Mrs. Norris. She was a manager by necessity, without any of Mrs. Norris’s inclination for it, or any of her activity. Her disposition was naturally easy and indolent, like Lady Bertram’s; and a situation of similar affluence and do-nothingness would have been much more suited to her capacity than the exertions and self-denials of the one which her imprudent marriage had placed her in. She might have made just as good a woman of consequence as Lady Bertram, but Mrs. Norris would have been a more respectable mother of nine children on a small income. (Ch 39)
Mrs. Price was also most likely woefully unprepared to be at the very bottom of the gentry class. She doesn't know how to work efficiently, she doesn't have a housekeeper and butler helping her keep the servants organized because that didn't make up part of her education or expectations in life: "always behindhand and lamenting it, without altering her ways; wishing to be an economist, without contrivance or regularity; dissatisfied with her servants, without skill to make them better, and whether helping, or reprimanding, or indulging them, without any power of engaging their respect."
Mrs. Norris, despite her obvious faults, is better able to adapt to circumstances than either of her sisters. She is active and efficient, probably from birth. She is intelligent and economical enough to save a good deal over her years, but the uselessness of her economy makes her into a miser: Having married on a narrower income than she had been used to look forward to, she had, from the first, fancied a very strict line of economy necessary; and what was begun as a matter of prudence, soon grew into a matter of choice, as an object of that needful solicitude which there were no children to supply.
I take from this that if she had had children, she would not have ended up like she did. Instead of saving for something, she makes the saving itself into her object of affection. A similar thing is explored in Silas Marner by George Eliot. Silas becomes a miser because he has nothing to make money for, so the money becomes his love.
There is also definitely a birth order effect, as Lady Bertram, the middle sister, blindly defers to her elder sister. Mrs. Norris is a controlling elder sibling and Mrs. Price a classic rebellious youngest.
Lady Bertram fell into the situation she was suited for, and becomes a very lazy baronet's wife. Mrs. Price is entirely unsuited by disposition to her lowly station in life and therefore struggles considerably. Mrs. Norris married lower than she wished, adapted, but fell into the temptation of greed due to a lack of children/something sensible to do with her money.
Whatever morality or principles that they may have had as young women seem to have worn away over time. There is very little positive good in any of them.
Another blog post about the Ward sisters here.

I bought a new edition of Aşk-ı Memnu (yes, this is the fifth one…) but I have a great justification: This one is the 1925 edition converted into the Latin alphabet (Turks used Arabic letters until 1928) instead of being based on Halit Ziya’s own simplification of its language in 1939 like all the other editions are. So, this is the original text! I am finally going to read it as the author originally wrote it in 1899. I will reread the book cover to cover in this edition, but even flipping through it I could catch a couple of changes. Most of the changes are really just about the language, but there are a couple of cultural details too. Most significant I could catch is in this passage:
“Then the lesson would begin. Nihal was now translating little pieces on morals for her father to check in the evening, transposing easy poems into prose, writing letters on the principles of daily life. While Mlle de Courton was busy with Nihal, Bülent, all of the way on the other side of the desk, would not lift the pen from the inkwell in order to fill his conjugation book, which was always behindhand. Sometimes Mlle de Courton’s gaze would fall on Bülent and she would shout at him in a stern voice: ‘Bülent!…’
Bülent would finally tire of the verb he was only able to write seriously through to the second person imperative, and there, between the imperative and the optative, would be discovered in the act of scribbling a palace composed of eight or ten wonky lines, or a pot with something in the middle of it that did not resemble a flower.”
(Chapter 3) (italics mine)
In the original version, in the italicized part there is the detail that Nihal is converting Racine’s Esther into prose, in the later version (which the above is a translation of) it just says that she is converting “easy poems”. I don’t know why Halit Ziya changed it. Maybe Racine’s Esther stopped being considered culturally relevant in the intervening 40 years? It is intriguing.

Excerpts from an interview with Merrily director Maria Friedman at The Record, Bergen County
Actors, we are told, "age out" of roles. A cruel reality of the business.
How nice to hear, in "Merrily We Roll Along," about actors who have aged in.
Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez, the leads in this revival of Stephen Sondheim's most autobiographical, most problematic and possibly best musical, are all in their 30s.
“I'm pinching myself at how lucky I am," Friedman said. "I could keep on and on and on with this thing."
Ever since then, people have been tinkering with the show, trying to get it right. Friedman thinks she has. Thanks in no small part to her cast.
"They are the kindest, sweetest people you could ever work with," Friedman said. "I've never seen people with so much give so much."
Another pitfall is making it too cynical, bitchy, judgy. "We all, by the time we are the age these characters are playing, have made mistakes," she said. "And it's OK. You can reset. I have a forgiveness and love for every single person on that stage. I find a way to explore their humanity, their fragility, their loneliness, the lack of love and the wanting of love and the not understanding of love. I don't blame anyone."
That goes especially for Franklin Shepard, frequently cast as the villain of the piece — the king sellout. Not in her show.
"Everyone says Frank is unlikeable," she said. "Well, watch this Frank. He's loveable. He's charismatic. He's a people pleaser. He's not a villain on any front. He's brilliant, and he loses his way because of other people's demands on him."
All credit to Groff's great performance, Friedman says. But Radcliffe, as his buddy Charley, is not a bit behindhand. Not least because we've all watched Radcliffe on his own "Merrily We Roll Along" journey — from beloved child star in the "Harry Potter" series, to adult, risk-taking actor in "Equus" and "Endgame." He won't disappoint his fans, Friedman said.
"He's dazzling, absolutely dazzling," she said. "A remarkable man, and a remarkable actor. He stops the show at several points."

Quote
And the Lord answered me and said, Write the vision and engrave it so plainly upon tablets that everyone who passes may [be able to] read [it easily and quickly] as he hastens by. For the vision is yet for an appointed time and it hastens to the end [fulfillment]; it will not deceive or disappoint. Though it tarry, wait [earnestly] for it, because it will surely come; it will not be behindhand on its appointed day.

The Statue of Liberty
disembodied arm stood in
Madison Square from 1876 to1882. It had been agreed that Frédéric Bartholdi would create the
statue while the United States paid for the pedestal. Americans were a bit behindhand in offering donations, so Bartholdi sent along the arm and torch to help inspirecontributions. It took six years of benefit concerts, auctions, souvenir photos, and other mementos, but the full statue was finally dedicated on Liberty Island on October 28,1886

How to Frame a Bathroom You Must Know
When it comes to renewing a bathroom, one of the important steps is framing the bathroom. Good framing safeguards the structural integrity and constancy of the walls, making it an important part of the project. Whether you’re an experienced DIY enthusiast or just getting started, this director will guide you through the bathroom beautifying process with clear step-by-step instructions. let me explain about How to Frame a Bathroom You Must Know that will enhance your knowledge to the next level
For more: How to Frame a Bathroom You Must Know
Inspection
Your first step is to regulate whether the wood has been exposed to dampness from the shower or faulty plumbing. If you decide to finish with a partial remodel, the amount of review you can do is limited, but it’s still worth it.
Where the bath pan or bathtub comes into contact with the walls of the bath area, you will directly see discoloration, moisture, or in extreme cases, damage to the wood. The injury can be minimal, or it can be complete obliteration in the form of rotting wood.
Replace
If you find injured wood that has been exposed to moisture, whether behindhand walls or even on the floor, it will need to be substituted. Since wood framing is key to the physical stability of your bathroom remodel, it is dangerous to ensure that every wall stud, footboard, and floor beam is intact. A professional servicer will be able to remove damaged wood and substitute it with wood cut to size and devoted to the wall or floor level.
The wood you choose will be weight-treated or untreated; Ideally, pressure-preserved wood will be resistant to moisture damage under normal circumstances. You should also consider that heaviness-treated wood dries out and can be prone to curling, so you will need to determine what is best and encounters your area’s building code necessities.
Looking for a wet room
As I mentioned in the unique bathroom design plan, one of my desires was to have a walk-in shower. In this post, I go into more part about what a shower room is and why we need one. Preferably, I wanted to have a bath and two showers in the shower room to create a treat designer look for the bathroom. To make room for this, we intentionally moved the toilet across the room.
However, moving cesspit pipes can be extremely difficult and laborious, so to guarantee that it could be done level in our case, our workers asked us to raise the subfloor so they could see if any obstacles would prevent us from using the toilet. moving. The photo below shows the planetary after we removed the subfloor. What a mess!
What to consider during the development phase
Another thing to consider during the framing phase is where you may need additional support for things like shower grab bars, slats towel hooks, etc. It’s a good idea to map out where these things will be positioned so you can add another 2/4 blocking. In the photo below, notice the extra blocking we added between the studs – these are for the towel/robe hook and the handheld shower track hardware.
Gather your tools and materials
Beforehand diving into the process of making a frame, it is crucial to gather all the necessary tools and materials. Consuming everything at your fingertips will make the process smoother and more efficient. Here’s what you’ll need:
lumber 2×4
A circular saw
Nail framing
Hammer
Level
Measuring tape
Protective glasses
Ear protection
Work gloves
Once your tools are ready, you are ready to move on to the next step.
Prepare your workspace
Start by creating a clean and organized workspace. Remove any obstructions and make sure your tools and materials are easily accessible. A well-organized workspace is not only efficient but also promotes safety.
Measure and mark
Now it’s time to measure and mark the dimensions of the bathroom on the wall and floor. Use a tape measure, level, and pencil to create precise guidelines. These marks will serve as a guide for your frame.

"Take time then in forming your resolution, as the matter is of great importance; and do not be persuaded by the opinions and complaints of others to bring trouble on yourselves, but consider the vast influence of accident in war, before you are engaged in it. As it continues, it generally becomes an affair of chances, chances from which neither of us is exempt, and whose event we must risk in the dark. It is a common mistake in going to war to begin at the wrong end, to act first, and wait for disaster to discuss the matter. But we are not yet by any means so misguided, nor, so far as we can see, are you; accordingly, while it is still open to us both to choose aright, we bid you not to dissolve the treaty, or to break your oaths, but to have our differences settled by arbitration according to our agreement. Or else we take the gods who heard the oaths to witness, and if you begin hostilities, whatever line of action you choose, we will try not to be behindhand in repelling you." Such were the words of the Athenians.

Words about Bihter’s education in the novel:
“Despite Firdevs Hanım, this woman who felt none of the obligations of motherhood – with a shrewdness instinct to this family – Bihter too, knew a little bit of everything: enough Turkish to be able to flick through magazines and read the stories in them, enough French to use in Beyoğlu shops, and even a little Greek learnt from the servant girls who were always being procured from Tarabya. She played waltzes, quadrilles and romances on the piano; if required to, she could quite beautifully accompany her dignified, expressive singing on the oud which she had learnt almost entirely by herself.”
(Chapter 1)
Words about Nihal’s education in the novel:
“Mlle de Courton was made uncomfortable most of all by this. She could not be successful in making Nihal write out her grammar or to play exercises on the piano for half an hour straight. The lessons were always composed of parts fragmented by interruptions. But one day, no one knew how, Nihal would accidentally emerge from the lessons having learned.” (…)
Almost all of their life was spent in this room. Upon waking in the morning they would wash, get dressed, descend to the dining room with Mlle de Courton to drink their milky coffee, and in good weather they would roam around the garden for an hour. Bülent would run around with Beşir while Nihal sat under the big chestnut tree with Mademoiselle. Then the old girl would look at the little watch she always wore at her breast and exclaim, ‘it is time!…’ and they would go back inside and ascend to their room.
Then the lesson would begin.
Bülent would finally tire of the verb he was only able to write seriously through to the second person imperative, and there, between the imperative and the optative, would be discovered in the act of scribbling a palace composed of eight or ten wonky lines, or a pot with something in the middle of it that did not resemble a flower.
These breaks that Bülent occasioned were opportunities that Nihal treasured. She was always on the alert for a chance to have a breather after every eight lines of effort; to begin a long discussion derived from a word that was chanced upon during the lesson; or to run to the window and look at the garden while Mlle de Courton stood up and was removing the palaces and pots from Bülent’s notebook. Finally, among these mishaps Nihal’s lesson would be finished, and after a ten minute’s holiday, Bülent’s lesson would begin.
It had been agreed that while Mlle de Courton was busy with Bülent, Nihal would work on her piano, her embroidery frame, her sewing, her needlework. But because she could not be occupied with something for more than half an hour, she was allowed to move from her piano to her sewing box, from her sewing box to her embroidery frame whenever she wanted. The old girl had not been able to find any other solution for this butterfly.
Mlle de Courton had become so accustomed to Nihal learning everything without ever paying attention or ever being busy with anything, that she was no longer surprised; but she could not keep herself from being astonished that she made progress on the piano. Things that could only be achieved by long exercising of the fingers, Nihal would be found one day to have simply accomplished.
All of Czerny’s chains of études had undergone just such a tiresome game. Now she was preparing for Clementi’s Gradus ad Parnassum which made even Mlle de Courton quake. She offhandedly read all of the batches of operas that Adnan Bey brought, from Cimarosa, Donizetti, Mercadante, Rossini, with an ease of sense and instinct as if she had seen, heard, felt them already, right before Mlle de Courton’s astonished, disbelieving eyes. At those times the old girl would say to Adnan Bey, ‘do you know, this was meant to be six-years’ work. But there is neither mine, nor her own merit in this. Rubinstein’s soul must have rubbed off on this girl’s fingers.’
The idea of that master’s artistic genius rubbing off on Nihal’s fingers was such a thing that it interpreted this musical puzzle by defining an inexplicable truth in Mlle de Courton’s eyes, and she would no longer see it necessary to search for another reason.
Finally, after a struggle, the lessons were ended. There were among those operas ordered by her father one by Wagner that Mlle de Courton, with an absolute ban, prevented from being played. Nihal, on the contrary, took up this forbidden object every day, and watching for a moment when Bülent particularly angered the governess, wanted to exercise it on the piano. Then Mlle de Courton would forget Bülent and run to the instrument.
‘But my child, I have told you a thousand times that to play this a person must have German hands. You will break your fingers, not only that, you will ruin your ideas, your musical taste. Think of a tempest that knocks over chimneys, tosses aside tiles, roots up trees, rolls down boulders; think of that cacophony, make of it a musical piece, and there you have Monsieur Wagner!…’
She had an unquietable enmity towards Wagner. Whenever she mentioned Monsieur Wagner it seemed as if the blood in the veins of this noble French girl whistled with derision.
After this the lessons could not be continued. The old girl retired to her room until lunch and the children were left free to go wherever they wished.”
(Chapter 3)
Look, I know I am being kind of unfair in this. The glib, wry single paragraph description of Bihter’s education has almost as much worth as the paragraphs-long detailed description of Nihal’s education. And Nihal’s story is about growing up, whereas Bihter’s story is about marriage and sexuality, of course we will know more about Nihal’s education, she is still being educated. And the description of Nihal’s education concerns not just herself but Mademoiselle de Courton who is also an important character. These are all relevant points.
But it is still ridiculous to claim that Nihal is a side character to Bihter’s protagonist. We know Nihal. We know nearly everything about her. This is not a side character in someone else’s story.
