As a Black queer woman, it's important to me that we bring attention to the discrimination against our community that still remains a major issue. It's my goal, as President of the Human Rights Campaign, to continue to fight for our people and show that these numbers are NOT a way forward. Black LGBTQ+ people face pervasive discrimination in their everyday lives, which continues to negatively impact their economic and social well-being. An analysis by the @humanrightscampaign, found that 26% of Black LGBTQ adults surveyed experienced sexual orientation-based discrimination while applying to a job or at work. And 23% of LGBTQ adults of color, 22% of transgender adults, and 32% of transgender adults of color have no form of health insurance. These are just two areas where Black LGBTQ+ people face discrimination. In honor of #BlackHistoryMonth, we're celebrating queer pioneers! Ernestine Eckstein was one of the first Black women on the forefront of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in the 1960's, putting her knowledge from the Civil Rights movement to good use. . After college, she moved to New York City where she grew into her identity as a lesbian and decided to join the movement for LGBTQ+ rights. After a friend explained the term "gay" to her, she said, "Then all of a sudden things began to click … the next thing on the agenda was to find a way of being in the homosexual movement." . Eckstein often demonstrated for LGBTQ+ rights as the only woman of color among other white protestors, connecting the dots between Black Civil Rights and LGBTQ+ rights. She eventually became a leader in the New York chapter of Daughters of Bilitis, as well as other Black feminist organizations like Black Women Organized for Action (BWOA). She was in favor of doing away with labels, and uniting people together as people alone. “I’d like to find a way of getting all classes of homosexuals involved together in the movement." 💪

Two Black trans folks in need of funds for safe housing

I have been living with an abusive roommate and my partner and I have spent the last 4 days in a hotel to stay safe from him, despite having to pay rent and hotel fees.

I NEED to stay at least another week since he will be staying through the first week of December and the courts refuse to protect me even after a temporary restraining order was granted and he called the police on an all Black household to make himself seem like the victim.
