I was writing a post and at the end I was adding tags, as I do, and I typed the singular first person pronoun, I, and a list of tags popped up as suggestions that took me the fuck out. It was so disturbing I took a screenshot.
[image ID: a list of suggested tags, screenshotted. It's titled "popular" and the list is "I want to [star emoji]ve" "i wanna lose weight" "i sell content" "i love him"]
I wanna star-emoji-ve???? Well there's some pro-ana shit for you.
I don't know if the kids these days remember this but back in Livejournal around the era of strikethrough (the '07-'09 time period is where I remember noticing it) there was a movement to censor pro-self-harm blogs, that were support groups mostly supporting one another in more and more extreme anorexic/self-destructive/eating-disordered behaviors.
This is absolutely that. And they were like "it's self-expression" and everyone else in the world was like "it is actually a toxic encouragement of self-harm" because they were like, concretely instructing one another and recruiting vulnerable people to join them in ways to literally starve to death, they were support groups for killing yourself more or less, and so those tags would occasionally get banned or delisted or removed from search or whatever, but remember this was very early in the history of such things, and there was no algorithm. But people did use the browsing of blogs' "interests" to find one another, it was a feature of how Livejournal worked, and there wasn't a lot of moderation but the deactivation or delisting of those self-harm-encouraging tags were a hotly-contested bit of debate.
And so they got more creative, and found other ways to find one another, and people starved to death or otherwise irreparably damaged their bodies and their mental health and so on. I cannot emphasize enough, this was not fiction. These were not fictional stories depicting fictional scenarios that weren't happening, these were real people posting stories and encouragement and photographs of their real selves, showing off how much damage to themselves they were doing, concretely encouraging one another to do the same. This was not fiction.
But they kept finding new ways to talk about it so it couldn't be censored.
And then LJ deleted blogs for posting about fiction instead, and we all kind of forgot about it and moved on.
Highly displeased to find that it's all alive and well on Tumblr, to the point that it's the number one suggestion when I type the fucking first-person pronoun into the tag field, and I can't opt out of seeing that. COOL.
the fact that the top post in the witcher tag is still the fucking clickbait article screenshot posted by a racist xenophobic homo/transphobe that says "ummmm lauren was actually ANNOYED about henry's enthusiasm on set" makes me want to bash my goddamn head into a wall
Part 1 of my 'big weekend' of project development has gone really well so far. Lots of new things added, and progress has been made on my big list of new-things-to-add.
Let's first show everything in a brief video overview:
Whoa! Environments!
I did end up doing some extra work outside of my intended weekend scope, mostly because I wanted a brief distraction from coding. To that end I finally added the first parts of my 'asteroid' environment that your factory is placed in. This will be improved over time, I'm sure, but now serves to make the factory feel a lot more grounded in the very place you're supposed to be!
I also re-added the factory walls, which are now correctly done programmatically - rather than being hand-placed. These scale up with the size of the factory floor, so they're more or less 'done'.
Packager
You can now drop the packager into your factory, which is a necessary first step to exporting your goods from the facility.
Routing items through here will parcel them up ready for transport. You just have to snake them off to your Exporter machine.
Ready for packaging!
Exporter
This machine must be placed over one of the new export nodes. This restricts the number of exporters you can use in any given factory (like the import nodes), and you'll likely have to merge a number of packager belts together to bundle up lots of orders in later stages.
The exporter has space for up to 6 stacks of up to 99 items. A lack of space will result in packages backing up on the import belt, so make sure you don't fill it up with junk!
The build ghost of the exporter next to one of the new Export nodes. These are limited, so you'll have to design your factory around them!
What's next?
Here's my big list of things-to-do, with my completed updates marked off:
Main objectives view
Packager machine
Exporter machine
Research tree
Technology upgrades
Money / credits system
Structure descriptions (QoL)
Audio refinements (QoL)
Main menu screens
New pipes subsytem
Not bad progress so far! I'm not sure what I'm going to tackle tomorrow, though I have a sneaking suspicion I'll want to do the research and tech trees, since they are the next 'big' things to nail down. It will also force me to finally implement a system to prevent access to building items that you haven't yet unlocked, which is a crucial part of progression.
Anyway, that's all I have for this evening. If you reached this point, thank you kindly for your time! And with any luck I'll see you again tomorrow for another progress update.
Have a great evening, wherever you are, and I'll see you again soon! 😊
hey uh quick warning for mashblr people, if you search "mashpoll" there are a number of posts about a death in cape town from a few years ago that include photos of a dead man. not graphic but still very startling
if you'd like to preemptively block the blogs, they're torixus, updatecrib, report47, and clementbenjamin313
The alien-ness of the Universe Nakai in Space reminded me of Enterprise's Vertian/Shroomies in "Silent Enemy". They don't look much like each other but they are weird and alien-y and demand our surrender in different ways, in our own voice.
hey, your account was falsely terminated a while ago and you were able to get it back, right? how did you do that? asking for a friend
Yeah idk how similar my situation might be to yours because I was terminated over inactive sideblogs but my account access wasn't revoked entirely. I still had access to my sideblogs, so what I did was delete all the inactive ones and then start posting on one of my once-active sideblogs about how I had been terminated. I also posted on twitter and instagram and tagged tumblr on those platforms explaining that this blog was a good half of my income and terminating me had left me unable to conduct business with people who had been promised products from me. That, along with several emails (and supposedly some support tickets from other users about me, though I was never able to confirm those lol) got me reinstated within about 12 hours, but I've been told that's a really unlikely scenario lol. best of luck to you dealing with tumblr support over account termination is a fucking nightmare
Well that was very strange but thankfully very brief. Nothing seems to be lost, all of my inbox messages and drafts are still in tact 😮💨 thank you everyone who sent me kind messages and who expressed concern. I think I might keep the new backup @robinkeoni just for funsies and in case something like this happens again lol
Love Firefox, but have to use Chrome for automation projects. The dev tools just feel better to use. Maybe it’s because I’m not used to Firefox dev tools but oh lord it feels really clunky to me.
