Jinpine Radio #3
Tumblr media
Translation of the radio segment from Jin’s official YouTube channel. Original video here. Done on commission!
This livestream begins a little differently from the other ones. It starts out in complete silence and all that can be heard is random clicks. Then, the BGM suddenly starts playing. After a while and a few more clicks, Jin’s voice comes up. As usual, he greets first, tests the sound second and then proceeds to badmouth his own radio. We all know the drill by now. “This shitty radio that serves no purpose to anyone and has no reason to be whatsoever is starting once again,” he says, before mentioning that the current month (which, back when this livestream happened, was April) was a season of new beginners for many of the listeners, as a good portion of them are students. He announces that, although it might be a time when many difficulties might be happening to them, he wants to do his best and have a fun chat, so that they can cheer up and keep on fighting.
He then passes the baton to Inpine, who does by far the most unintelligible greeting out of all the episodes so far, which basically consisted of him yelling, “CHERRY BLOSSOMS, CHERRY BLOSSOMS. WHEN I SEE THEM, I GET DIZZY, DIZZY. MY NOSE GETS ITCHY, ITCHY. SNOT RUNS DOWN NONSTOP. YEAAAAH!!” with a macho voice. Jin starts laughing, saying he thought Inpine was going to introduce himself, but in the end, he didn’t say his own name. Inpine replies with a forceful little girl voice, saying he’s usually a “well-behaved child”, so he wanted to go for something new this time. Jin cuts his bullshit off, as usual. He also tells Inpine to quit making a face like what he did was a big deal or something. Inpine then obediently introduces himself in his normal voice.
The two start talking about flower viewing and about how cherry blossoms are so fickle that just drizzle is enough for them to scatter about.
Jin: The cherry blossoms are being tested.
Inpine: So are the people who go out for flower viewing.
After a while of this, they decide to go for the fanmail, thanking the people who sent them first-thing, as always. Both are impressed that people are not only still sending lots of fanmails but also thinking them through. They say that without this support, they’d just wither away.
They start by reminding everyone, also as per usual, of what the theme of the fan letters is. This time, it’s “a weird story that you’ve heard from an elder”. Inpine laughs at the fact that announcing the theme always makes him immediately start talking about recent experiences related to them. Jin feels the same.
Although it’s pretty bad for the course of the livestream itself, they do start talking about things that have happened lately. Jin then explains that in the previous week, when his album was coming out, he did a web event with some fans who had won a lottery related to the album and earned a chance to have a video chat with him. He called them on video from the studio where he usually records his CDs and says it was extremely fun, although he only had a short time to speak to each of them. He comments that the line connected super quick on each call, so even though it was their first time seeing each other face-to-face, everything was so automatic and fast that it felt like they were fighters just waiting for the combat to begin. And as expected, whenever he’d come up on the other person’s screen, they’d be visibly startled and some would even let out a scream. He says such reactions are only the expected when you have some clown suddenly showing up on camera and going, “Hiii” like he’s Pennywise or something (yes, he made this exact comparison).
Regardless, it was fun and he’d love to do it again. He’d also like to do something similar in the Jinpine Radio. Inpine asks if they’d both have to appear on camera for that one and Jin says yes, suggesting they do it outdoors. They start joking and laughing about streaming from a boat in the middle of a lake and going live saying shit like, “It’s cold. We can’t see anything. Where on earth are we?”
Once they’re done making fun of each other, they finally start reading the fanmail.
Level 103 at “Fun with Crafts”: “Jin-san, Inpine-san, good evening. Thank you so much for hosting such a fun radio every time. There’s this one weird story that I heard from my grandma about her husband (AKA my grandpa). Apparently, a long time ago, my grandpa wanted to have an open-air bath overlooking the night sky. He’d pile up rocks at the nearby river in an attempt to make a bathtub, but they’d get swept away by the rising tide, so in the end, he brought the river rocks home together with some cement and quickly built an open-air bath with them. Still, we had to put a roof over it in order to avoid wind and rain, meaning it wasn’t possible to watch the night sky, but when I, as a little kid, said that it was an awesome bath and was told that grandpa had been the one who made it, I swooned. Jin-san, Inpine-san, if there happens to be anything unbelievable in your family homes built by either your grandmothers or grandfathers, please tell us about it.”
Okay, so first of all, gotta explain this person’s name. “Fun with Crafts” is the official translation of “Tsukutte Asobo”, an old Japanese TV show and video game for kids. As the name says, it was about making stuff. When Jin and Inpine read this name aloud, they started laughing. Inpine joked, “I wonder what this person can make” and Jin says what probably all of us have been thinking for a while now, “These guys are playing around too much with their radio names!”
When they got to the part about the grandpa building a bath out of scratch, Jin went, “Oho, so strong!” and Inpine tipped in, “He’s a level 100, huh”. They also comment on how the whole thing was for naught, since the initial goal of watching the night sky from an open-air bath was never achieved. However, they can’t deny that there’s some elegance to it either way, and aiming for something unachievable is just human nature anyway.
Jin is the first to share a story about something unbelievable that one or both of his grandparents had at home, which is also the “weird story” that he heard from them. He begins in the most roundabout way possible – by revealing that he has a father and a mother. Inpine feigns surprise and Jin rolls with it. Jin explains that his surname, taken from his father’s side, is very commoner-like, while his mother’s family name sounded like a surname of nobility. It seems she comes from a samurai bloodline and up to his great-grandmother’s generation, they had lots of weapons at home, such as katana and naginata. From what Jin heard, these weapons even had inscribed on them the names of their wielders and what generation they were. However, his great-grandmother lost her parents when she was still a child and had to be taken in by relatives, who apparently deceived her and took all these valuables to themselves. Jin himself never had a chance to see them.
On Inpine’s turn to tell his story, he starts off by explaining that his grandparents had a rather big property (by Japanese standards, that is). They were farmers and owned rice fields and other kinds of plantations that were rather extensive. On their land, there were two houses. One of them was his grandparents’ residence. Inpine used to think that the other house was also theirs. It was dirty and dusty and not really a place that people could live in, but Inpine liked it because it had a secret hideout feel to it. Yet, one day, its roof disappeared. Jin jokes that this was a “bug in the render”. Inpine asked what had happened to the roof and the answer he got from his grandfather was, “We took it down to use the wood burning stove”. Basically, the other house’s wood was used as fuel. Meaning not just the roof but also the whole house was gone after some time. Inpine used to be quite fond of the house and thought it was pretty good, especially because it was spacious. It was big enough to park a car inside, but it was normally used for get-togethers. Nevertheless, it was teared down entirely. Jin says he wants to see the empty slot the next time they visit their hometown and Inpine agrees, saying he might even explain how they brought down the house.
Pollock Roe Pasta Yamamoto: “Jin-san, Inpine-san, good evening. It almost makes me happy how inappropriate this whole thing is.”
Here is where Jin makes a pause to wonder whether he and Inpine are being complimented or figuratively kicked. They’re happy about this, though.
“On the topic of impressive stories told by grandparents, my grandmother is quite the talker. When she was young, a friend of hers passed away. This is a story about the time she went to their funeral. She didn’t have any mourning dress and was out of money, so she pulled an all-nighter sewing herself an attire. Her legs were very numb from that.”
The first thing that Jin and Inpine say upon reading this, almost in unison, is, “Well, of course they’d go numb! But she’s cool as hell”. They agree that she’s something of a creator and they’re no match for her. The two are extremely amazed at the fact that she did it all herself and overnight. Jin jokes that they should do this too, and when one of them dies, the other will have to make his own mourning dress and attend the funeral with it. Inpine, as usual, doesn’t miss a beat and says that whatever they make will look like something made by a demon overlord. Jin says that’s just fine, because they’d probably miss the other a lot and be very miserable, so they should at least make it fun.
Back to the penny-less young grandma, the two remember that you had to sit down with folded knees in funerals back in the old days and wonder if she was able to stay in that position until the funeral was over if her legs had taken such a toll the previous night. To top it off, cars weren’t so mainstream at the time, so she probably had to walk her way to the ceremony. This escalates to them imagining the grandma driving one of the common car models of that time, Subaru 360, to attend the funeral and musing about how cool that would’ve been.
Next, they decide to intercalate normal fanmail with the themed ones and pick a normal message to read.
Ocean Sunfish Bait: “Hello. I always have fun listening to your radio. I have sent this fan letter because there was something I wanted to ask after listening to this radio. It’s about the fact that Jin-san and Inpine-san’s houses are very close to each other. Did you perhaps make a conscious decision to live close to one another? I’d be happy if you could tell us about this in detail. I’ll be supporting your activities from now on too.”
When they read this person’s radio nickname, the first thing they wonder is what the hell ocean sunfish eat. Inpine believes it’s plankton, while Jin thinks they hunt for prey. Whichever it is, the OP named themself after it, so this means that OP is plankton, and give them the alias “Plankton-san”.
As for the answer to OP’s question, Jin concludes that he’s the one who has to answer it, meaning Inpine was the one who moved into his current house first and later Jin moved into his own. He ponders for a brief moment exactly what extent of this story he’s supposed to share, but then decides to just tell everything there is to tell.
Before making MVs, Inpine was doing miscellaneous jobs and he’d travel a lot because of it. It was underground work, and one day, he decided to wash his hands off it and get into a proper occupation. However, he had nowhere to live (as his home was apparently provided by his office) and he was broke. That’s when Jin told him there was an empty slot close to his home, which nobody seemed to be using or intending to use, and asked what he thought of living there. It was obviously a terrible idea and Inpine totally bought it. He considered all sorts of ideas to living there, such as buying a capsule to live inside or setting up camp. He even thought about purchasing a bus and parking it there, and this one is a whole can of worms of its own.
So Inpine, being the automobile freak he is, found out that a bus was being put on auction at the time. It was a very cheap price for a bus, though they don’t mention the exact sum. Inpine seriously considered using the bus as a home and many of his friends were on board with the idea. Turns out that quite a few of his friend actually own buses. There was even one friend who told Inpine that he could have one of his buses for free. Jin has no idea how Inpine’s social circle works.
In the end, though, what he settled for purchasing was a pre-fabricated hut. He and Jin went to see the options together and were welcomed by a pretty lady who introduced them to huts that were used for storage and get-togethers. When she heard that they were planning to buy a hut literally to live inside it, the lady was dumbfounded. She had to ask him a few times if he was really gonna do that, lmao.
The best part was setting up the hut on the empty slot. It had to be hoisted up and put in place. Inpine recorded a video of it because it’s not every day that you can see your own house descending upon you. Jin said he looked like Darth Vader with his space ship landing in front of him.
Now, in any normal country, you’d think this kind of shit wouldn’t work. It sounds like a joke straight out of a bad comedy movie. Someone would see what was going on and either file a complaint or call the police. That or the actual owner of the empty slot would come and kick him out.
But no. No, my dudes. Inpine managed to live in that hut for more than a year.
At first, it was too cold, so they tried to stick heat insulation materials to the floor and walls. They also decided to paint the hut from the inside and picked blue because it’s the color of the sky, but to other people, it looked a lot like a cell, as the interiors of Japanese prisons are usually blue.
Now, in order for Inpine to live in that place, he struggled a lot getting the paperwork ready, as you all might be imagining. However, he managed to do it in the end. As for things such as using the toilet and bathing, he’d go to Jin’s house for that.
Pineapple Bucket: “Jin-san, you get letters and presents from fans, right? Which of them has stuck with you the most until now? I’d like to know the reason why. By all means, tell us.”
Inpine is as curious as the person who sent this message. Jin then tells him and the listeners about what happened after the April livestream, where he and Inpine whined about not having received any Valentine’s chocolates. His manager heard about this from the livestream and tweeted the situation, so Jin ended up getting one (1) chocolate from some kind soul out there. Tragedy avoided, as Jin and Inpine say. Or else, Jin “would have invaded some chocolate factory”.
A few jokes later, the two start talking about how nice it is to receive fan letters. Jin says they have no way of returning the favor except making more good content and both add how happy they are to receive such nice comments.
Back to the themed fanmail, it’s Inpine’s turn to read the message but Jin had forgotten to switch. He starts with, “Next is... me? It’s not me, is it?”, referring to himself as “watakushi” in the process. Inpine says it isn’t – it’s “watapine’s” turn. Jin goes along with the pun and says, “All right, so this ‘Watapine’ guy is gonna read this message”, passing him the baton.
Okaka: “This is a story that I heard from my grandmother. When she was little, she swallowed a 100 yen coin and it was still inside her.”
Jin immediately recalls that there was a similar story in one episode from the anime “Black Jack”. A character had to do a surgery but it was too expensive, so they had to look for a more affordable doctor, who ended up forgetting a whole freaking scalpel inside their stomach. The doctor spent years in regret, wondering if the former patient would one day get stabbed by the scalpel from the inside and die, but miraculously enough, they had to have their stomach open once again. In that process, the scalpel was removed, and turns out that it was covered in calcium, which prevented it from hurting the patient. Therefore, Jin concluded, the coin was probably covered in calcium inside that old lady’s body as well.
He and Inpine go on to wonder if that isn’t actually dangerous to her health, with Inpine concluding that if she managed to get to that age, then it was probably okay. They also consider the possibility that the coin might’ve left her body without her noticing it. At first, they joked about magic tricks related to coins, but then it evolved into toilet jokes and them talking about how painful that’d be.
And speaking of metals in bodies, Jin starts talking about news he saw of foreigners who implant diamonds and such into their skin. Inpine comments that there are people in Japan who implant chips into their bodies so that they can pay for things instantly just by getting close to a barcode reader, which, in my opinion, is far more terrifying. They then joke about how that granny would never be able to get on a plane, as the metal detector would beep even after she takes off every piece of clothing and accessory that has metal on it.
Darwin: “Jin-san, Inpine-san, good evening. I’m always looking forward to your radio streaming. Well, I’m going to jump straight to this time’s theme. Apparently, my grandmother sometimes has prophetic dreams. Whenever danger was about to approach her, such as when she got involved in a traffic accident and when she fell off a bridge, she would dream with it a few days prior. She would, for example, dream that she was falling from a very high place. My grandmother would tell everyone that this was thanks to our ancestors, who were protecting her, and that she had managed to live for so long without ever getting injured was because of them. To tell the truth, I myself have had kind of similar experiences before. It’s the kind of thing that sometimes has me feeling like I’m in a manga or something. I don’t know how my grandmother’s gift works very well, but I personally think it might be some kind of extraordinary deja-vu phenomenon. Have either of you ever had prophetic or deja-vu visions?”
Inpine says he’s experienced deja-vu before about three times. He’s had times when he felt like what happened to him was something he’d seen in a dream before. Meanwhile, Jin isn’t sure whether he could call this a prophetic episode or not, but there was once a day in his childhood where he seemed to sense the danger before it happened. One afternoon, he woke up from a nap that he’d been taking with his sister and went to the kitchen to drink some tea. He sat on the table next to where his mother was doing the dishes and drank a whole glass, and then, for whatever reason, he thought to himself that he had to get his sister a glass of tea too. He has no idea why he had this thought, as it wasn’t something he’d usually do, but immediately after he got up, the kitchen lamp fell down on the exact spot he’d been sitting. He doesn’t really remember this, but his mother told him about it. She believes he had some sort of premonition but he didn’t buy it. He’s sure that he just got lucky – after all, if he had any sixth sense, he could’ve made good use of it in the two times that he got hit by a car.
Yes, he’s been hit by a car. Twice.
Inpine jokes that people get hit by cars at least once in life and Jin tips in by saying that life begins when you get hit by a car for the first time. But back to the serious talk, Jin thinks the whole thing was a coincidence, but he does believe human beings have abilities that sometimes are beyond comprehension.
Congratulations for the One Year Anniversary of Children Record Re:boot (yeah, that’s OP’s nickname of choice): “Jin-san, Inpine-san, good evening. It’s always fun listening to the Jinpine Radio. I have a question for the two of you: there’s this famous Meiji snack called ‘Fufun~’. How do you pronounce that? My friend and I disagree as to what the correct intonation is, so I’d like to hear your opinions too.”
(T/N: When this person says “Meiji”, they mean the brand, not the era.)
Jin and Inpine count to three and say the name together. There’s a slight difference in pronunciation between the two. Jin thinks that the pronunciation of the snack in its TV commercial isn’t the same as the actual pronunciation, since the name is only sung and never spoken, but he’s heard a lot of people pronounce in the way he does. He and Inpine then agree that they don’t have the actual answer.
Ultra Hype Fever Tsushima Sora: “Jin-san, Inpine-san, good evening. It’s me, the one ridden with a super energetic fever, Tsushima Sora. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to make a video for you. I always have fun listening to your radio. Now, the nuances might be a bit different here, but I’d like to share a weird memory of my grandfather and grandmother. Well, this is about a time I went to stay at my grandpa and grandma at their house for the first time in a while, since they live far away. We had a few days of fun, but at a certain point, an incident happened. On one morning, I couldn’t find my favorite stuffed toy anywhere. When I finally found it, guess what! It had permanent marker scribbles all over it. The culprit was my grandpa. Apparently, grandpa wanted to bond with me in some way and that’s why he scribbled on it, but this kind of thinking in itself was already bizarre enough. When my grandma found me bawling my eyes out, she put a lint roller that she used for cleaning on top of his head and said, ‘Do a headstand and apologize!’ to him. I was like, ‘Eh? A headstand?’ as my tears receded for an instant. Grandpa properly apologized to me while doing a headstand with the roller on top of his head. I still vividly remember this comedy sketch-like moment. The two are still alive and living in the countryside. Jin-san and Inpine-san, do you have any strange memories with your own grandparents? Thank you for reading!”
Before reading this one, Jin and Inpine explain who Tsushima Sora is for the first-timers, and after reading the first sentence, they start laughing and asking themselves if Tsushima Sora was always this eager. Jin jokes that either they might actually not know who this person is, or someone threatened Tsushima into picking this nickname. They then get serious for a moment to thank Tsushima for their work on the MV of “Mermaid”.
As for the contents of the letter, the duo is completely confused as to how Tsushima’s grandfather might have been able to do a headstand with a lint roller on top of his head. According to them, one would only be able to do that by using an Akuma no Mi. They also comment on the last sentence of the latter and the way that Tsushima seemed to suddenly get kind of shy with their manner of speech, even though they were supposedly “ultra hyper”. They joke about it for a little bit, but apologize right away and then start joking about how they’d just ruined any chance of Tsushima coming to the radio as a guest or co-host.
At last, they decide to answer Tsushima’s question, starting with Inpine. Inpine’s strange story is that, one time, as he was sitting at the veranda with his grandmother, he called to her several times, yet she could not hear him even though they were sitting next to each other. His grandmother had terrible hearing, and just when he thought her situation might’ve been getting worse, he heard an animal noise. He wondered aloud what kind of animal that had been, to which his grandmother immediately got up, said that it was a fox and sat right back. He was, of course, astounded, not only at the fact that she had been able to identify the animal but also at the fact that she had even been able to hear it so well in the first place when she couldn’t hear her own grandson who was literally just next to her.
As for Jin, his story is low-key a horror one. In his hometown, there used to be a restaurant that his grandmother really liked. She was a regular customer until the shop closed. When it did, she’d stare at it from her window often, wondering if they’d open on that day. Jin once heard her saying this aloud and asked, “Didn’t that shop go under?”, to which his grandmother replied, “That can’t be. There’s always a guy in there”.
Jin and Inpine go from being scared at Jin’s grandmother seeing things that weren’t supposed to be there to joking at her eating habits. According to Jin, she’d only ever eat cup ramen and pizza, and whenever someone asked her what her favorite food was, she’d automatically say “pizza”. The two agree that it’s fine, though, since she’s had a very long life and would probably still be this world for a while. Jin says he might retire from the shock if she passes and that he’s truly grateful to her. Inpine comments on how much he loves his grandmother and Jin agrees. The two then ask the listeners to use this radio episode as a cue to contact their grandparents, be it by sending them mail or giving them a call.
The last message, believe it or not, is from Jin’s manager. Yes, the actual, real-life manager of Jin as a musician and author.
They greet the manager politely before reading and Inpine introduces himself.
“Jin-san, Inpine-san, good evening. Thank you for always taking care of me (T/N: this one is for Jin, specifically). This might be coming out of the blue, but when you start hiccupping, how do you stop it? The weird story that I have heard is about the grandmother of one of my friends. Apparently, whenever she starts hiccupping, she can stop by chanting the words ‘morning-glory’ (T/N: yes, the flower). I half-believed, half-not, so when I actually tried this out myself, it stopped completely. It was terrifying. I do not know whether that was a coincidence or placebo effect, and since it’s not something I can try a lot of times, I decided to ask someone else if this really works. You two, if you remember to do this, by all means, try it out. P.S.: I always have fun with your radio. I’ll visit sometime and bring some snacks.”
The people in the chat feature start chanting “morning-glory”, some even saying that they know about this trick and a few saying it never worked on them. As for the manager’s question, Jin rarely ever gets hiccups. He jokes that he hasn’t had hiccups for such a long time that they might just be dead by now. Meanwhile, Inpine says he likes having hiccups. This sick motherfucker seems to have full control over them and enjoys “doing as he pleases with his hiccups”, whatever the hell that means.
The two thank the manager for their work and Jin comments that, whenever he finishes a job, the manager cries and tells him that he was awesome. It’s an every-single-time kind of thing. Bless this person’s soul.
The topic deviates a little to dialects all over Japan and to them wondering where the slang “easy” (pronounced in English with a Japanese accent) came from. Apparently, it’s from Miyagi and traveled all the way to Hokkaido by word of mouth. Speaking of Miyagi, Jin adds that his samurai ancestors were from there, it seems.
Jin and Inpine thank the listeners for their messages. It wasn’t an easy theme and the fact one would have to have heard it from their grandparents made it even more difficult, since people hardly talk to their grandparents nowadays. However, so many people sent messages to them, and they are very grateful for it.
Neither of the two had any idea what the next stream’s theme would be. They wanted the next episode to be a guest episode (and they wanted the guest to be Tsushima Sora). Rather than picking a theme, they wanted suggestions from the listeners in order to make the contents richer.
They thank the listeners and say their goodbyes.

Animation Usurper
Happy International Asexuality Day!
Fun Fact, I wrote this during Ace Week in October. But apparently I either am so forgetful, or dissatisfied with my prose or am distractible or just couldn’t motivate myself to do clarifying edits, or some combo of those, here we are all these months later.
So. Let’s make up for lost time.
I’m very far along the ace spectrum, so I typically don’t like Western ‘adult’ cartoons. (as a result of a particular brand of ace, not all ace people experience repulsion) Really, it’s more because the industry has collectively decided ‘adult cartoons’ should mean almost always be *obnoxious and in-your-face* about sexuality, as opposed to some animes made for adults whose focus isn’t that but maybe it includes it occasionally.
To go on a bit of an unrelated tangent, Japan has a lot more respect for the ART medium of animation. And aside from aesthetics and effort, middling thematic variety between ‘this is all about sex’ and ‘for kids.’
(not fond of violence either)
Sadly though, I find the style repetitive and haven’t really done a deep dive on anime. It doesn’t sate the ‘novelty-seeking’ aspect of my psychology. But I venerate all the effort. I just wish there was some fusion between the two, where Japanese animation was a little less rigid in its style dictates and Western animation aimed a little higher for quality. Maybe that’s arising, as you’ll see here in a bit later.
It also doesn’t help that Western adult cartoons seem to think it’s funny to have a dial-it-in art style.
I don’t like the idea of someone spending months of their lives, limited time on earth per minutes of animation, just to have it look scruffy, or flat, derivative, or unimaginative. That is incredibly disheartening to picture, as an artist. Even just being a hobbyist.
Call it vicarious existential anxiety, I suppose.
Maybe some might misread that concern and call me a ‘snob’ for that, but, hey, what’re ya gonna do.
It’s as if, since again they seem to have very little self-respect for their stories or characters, the crude animation and character design itself is a crutch to add to the writing of comedy, and should be laughed at.
Maybe people do find that funny.
And note, I’m not even necessarily talking about making animation realistic or proportioning bodies exactly like anime does. Elegance can be found in the simplest of character designs, if someone deliberately creates it that way. See: the animation studio that produced The Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, The Breadwinner, Wolfwalkers, and most recently, My Father’s Dragon.
(kinda glad I dragged my feet and got to give a shout-out to that last one)
Lego Monkie Kid, for that matter!!!!
Cannot say enough good things about that show. I’ll probably make a whole separate post about it.
To be honest, I quite frequently find myself digging for aesthetically pleasing ‘moving art,’ and sometimes the story is secondary. A stationary artist doesn’t have to tell me a whole story for me to enjoy their painting- and artist animators who just happen to draw a bad card from the deck and not to be blessed with pairing to good writers nonetheless pique my interest.
I’ve done enough stationary art browsing over my lifetime, that, in fact, maybe I’ve jaded myself a little. If even a tiny fraction of the stellar character design in art communities online were animated, I think people would start to see the problem, and variety would blossom.
So, that brings me to an interesting intersection of this musing.
And don’t worry, the ace spec subject does come back into it full circle.
Independent animators.
If you had described these two very well-known web animations to me beforehand, and asked me which you think I would like more, I would’ve selected ...
Bee and Puppycat.
I mean. Obviously. Cute creatures and whimsical settings. Not too adult and not too babyish either, something that is astonishingly rare among Western animation??
You might have heard grumblings of this before in fandom spaces, questioning and wondering about why there seems to be no middle ground.
But, oddly, even though I fully mentally recognize B & P as a landmark achievement, both as a step outside monopolized media production spaces and hitting a sweet spot that is sorely lacking within them ... I just didn’t resonate with it.
This is baffling to me, because as I mentioned, the style of it is very appealing, so what gives? I’m put off of some shows with good writing because of aesthetic style, (as a corollary to the seeking styles and disregarding writing, kinda like someone may vibe to acoustic stylings of a piece of music even if the lyrics are utterly insipid on their own) but usually the reverse does not happen. Even if I didn’t like the writing or plotting, which is far from the case, as the writing’s fine, I should have been motivated to finish it.
Honestly, I haven’t quite worked that out yet, tho I have an inkling, and it’s related to suggesting an IRL friend to record Bee’s lines since she likes it so much.
But, that’s not the reason I started this ramble, and not as well-developed as my thoughts on art styles, so forgive me for leaving it aside.
Enter the Dark Horse animation that, had you asked me beforehand if I would like, I would’ve said ‘yeah prob not for me, I’ll move along.’
Helluva Boss (and Hazbin Hotel).
There are LOADS of reasons I shouldn’t take a shine to this cartoon.
1. HH & HB are barely above the likes of Rick and Morty and Simpsons et all in its incessant ‘adult’ jokes
and again don’t misunderstand me here, I /enjoy/ Star Trek Lower Decks. It makes tolerable and judicious use of adult jokes and doesn’t overly rely on them.
2. HH’s style- while absolutely cool- is behind B & P in terms of preference. BUT. In terms of creativity and flow, is heads and shoulders above practically all big name cartoons out there. What I call the “golf ball eye” phenomenon, in which eyes are perfectly round with mere dots. So you get two moldy foods to consume for the price of one: lack of variation in creativity AND lack of character expressiveness and nice looks. Three sci fi examples are Star Trek: Lower Decks, Final Space, and Solar Opposites. One I love, the middle is not bad, and S.O.’s humor is great. Buuuuut. Their face aesthetics….. Even SU Pearl’s exceedingly simple, no-pupil eyes add SO much to the draw of the character with just the inclusion of a single color. I’m not asking for much. I promise. Not even Owl House style highlights are a bare requirement. I know how hard animating is. I like things like She-Ra, soft and round shapes, and tend to dislike sharp edges (Sorry, most recent Ninja Turtles remake. Kipo, you’re fine hunny, just a lil off) and yet. Somehow HH has bypassed that into ‘wtf why do I love this so much.’ Wily little sneaks.
I mean, when the likes of Aquaman 2022 feels like ‘a breath of fresh air’ because there’s so little visual variety in animation, you know something’s amiss. Not to knock it too hard, though. I wish that had been that artist’s “breakout role,” tbh, instead of the first job he got stuck with before that, because he will be forever remembered as the guy who ruined a nostalgic fandom’s wishes at behest of executives and not the guy who made something as whimsical and fun as this iteration of Aquaman. The character was usually the butt of the joke among DC fans to begin with, and therefore has more leeway to be silly. That style won extra points that supplements its questionable aesthetic raw merit. To be fair, there’s so much motion in the character’s body emoting, that also goes beyond very stiff, basic poses common in other shows, I have to give points for that, too.
3. HH universe takes religious concepts and obviously has no respect for them. In a somewhat similar but more lowkey way, recalling a screed by a practicing Hindu who was understandably angry at the less-than-respectful comedic moments in ATLA towards certain cultural aspects, I simply find the /premise/ cringe. I know cringe culture is dead and all. I even agree with that general sentiment. I think Vivzie will sleep fine at night if one backwater Tumblr blog- who’s ultimately still complimenting her- uses the term as a one-off.
It doesn’t help that the vision of Hell typically forwarded in the modern day that is used to terrorize fundie-raised kids during childhood doesn’t resemble the original Hebrew belief and therefore the whole show ends up reminiscent of so much IRL totally unnecessary angst.
I’d almost rather have a fantasy setting that had its own underworld concept, or could be similar to HH canon but with 4th wall breaks that slyly hinted they’re all in Dante’s Inferno which was, historically, political satire of the time (essentially a longform political cartoon, hue hue) and 0% Biblical to begin with …..  Idk.
(though I did have a strange conversation with someone recently which indicated Dante’s Inferno may have been based on pieces of the Quran. Weird.)
4. HB characters are abrasive. I could barely get through Homestuck. Lower Decks is here again a good comedy counterexample of characters that aren’t CONSTANTLY backbiting each other for the sake of a joke.
(or verbally abusing children, as one sci fi protagonist everybody loves to hate)
So, the mystery: how did I manage to stick with this cartoon, with so much pulling against it?
Again, can’t quite put my finger on it
But, I know that by the second episode, it had one little grip on me with Stolas sweetly serenading his daughter against a backdrop of the cosmos and exploding planets.
Encouraged, I thought that perhaps there would be more sincere moments like that. I was hurting for musical animation after all, I can barely comprehend why it’s not more common. (sadly, Centaurworld did not really effectively scratch that itch, for me personally, tho I did latch onto a couple songs long term). Corporations want people hooked on their content, but you don’t offer us that which burrows into the brain and repeats itself for days at a time?
The one time capitalism fails to take advantage of something, and it’s the pleasant things. Figures.
So, back into the thick of it, I’m halfway through the season and have found some bits and pieces to like, but still am questioning if the likable outweighs the negatives. Then I see Blitz and Moxie do their duet. Now that scene alone was worth everything else. Purely aesthetically it’s a treasure, a subtle shift in artstyle that mimicked the likes of Disney, and the character depth upgraded several notches.
So now by this point, I knew, I’m gonna watch the rest of this series at least. Dunno if I was gonna be super invested in the fandom, but not everything you watch will consume your soul like that, so all good.
And then.
Drumroll.
The Wrath Ring pair visits the club.
They are relentlessly mocked for being ‘too vanilla’ for everyone around them.
Man.
You don’t know HOW hard that hit me. You can’t comprehend it.
Feeling constantly out of place b/c of not being allosexual. It’s not a perfect parallel obviously, but it nonetheless struck a deep vein of accumulated angst.
Irony of ironies, the cartoon that may have slipped through my fingers because of VERY SIMILAR issues to that scene IRL managed to take a pickaxe to my psyche.
Seeing two people being unapologetic about being more modest in their desires in the face of what could be interpreted as amatonormativity on steroids was indescribable.
In fact, the parallel gets even closer to reality when you consider any perfectly ordinary woman who’s had the accusations flung at her for being ‘frigid’ or ‘repressed’ whether by men pressuring her or well-meaning friends or acquaintances who think they know what’s good for her better than she does.
An excellent counter-anthem:
youtube
I’d think she’d resonate with this too, and if not, maybe see the episode with new eyes after reading this little entry.
In the modern era, in these ways, there is ubiquitous prude shaming and over-forced sex-positivity even of non-aces.
So, I formally present to you my carefully constructed headcanon on behalf of bygone Ace Week: Moxie and Millie are both gray ace. Their attractions are more subtle than that palm sweaty, instant-draw that ‘primary attraction’ often generates, and subsequent strikes of physical desire.
Tumblr media
They might or might not have ‘secondary attraction’ as their only experience (demi) in the stylings of the very popular Friends-To-Lovers trope, but without their backstory of how they met, we can’t determine that yet.
They are alloromo, of course. Alloace. Probably hetace.
After some reflection, as an inversion, Blitz could probably be read as aroallo.
(I know it’s played as if he’s simply ‘afraid’ of getting in a serious relationship, but if you pay close attention, his platonic relationships are presented the exact same way- so it could be just relationships and emotional vulnerability in general. It doesn’t directly have to mean he experiences romo attraction. We don’t see a lot of him deliberating and being ‘drawn’ to it but shying away- rather he’s so oblivious to romance he stumbles into inviting Stolas out without even once thinking what it might mean to the other. Sorry but, that is an incredibly common experience among aro people, not realizing how they’re coming across to another person!!) (and his response to a clearly romantic overture of watching movies and cuddling even more hints that his brain operates in aro mode)
And Angel Dust gives off vibes which are much more straightforwardly aroallo.
And to round it all out, we have the canon aroace character, Alastor.
Tumblr media
And thus concludes HH’s careful courting of me. The initial rocky start, the resistance, has evaporated and I am invested.
...
P.S.
If you’d like to see some more independent animation, check out Lackadaisy, which is absolutely stunning
And Talon, the fluidity of which is somewhat rougher, but is nonetheless ambitious, has some neat light effects, and definitely for those who adore dinosaurs

Tokyo culture🗼
Tokyo has many museums. In Ueno Park, there is the Tokyo National Museum, the country's largest museum and specializing in traditional Japanese art; the National Museum of Western Art and Ueno Zoo. Other museums include the Artizon Museum in Chūō; the National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation in Odaiba; the Edo-Tokyo Museum in Sumida, across the Sumida River from the center of Tokyo; the Nezu Museum in Aoyama; and the National Diet Library, National Archives, and the National Museum of Modern Art, which are near the Imperial Palace.
Tokyo has many theaters for performing arts. These include national and private theaters for traditional forms of Japanese drama. Noteworthy are the National Noh Theatre for noh and the Kabuki-za for Kabuki. Symphony orchestras and other musical organizations perform modern and traditional music. The New National Theater Tokyo in Shibuya is the national center for the performing arts, including opera, ballet, contemporary dance and drama. Tokyo also hosts modern Japanese and international pop, and rock music at venues ranging in size from intimate clubs to internationally known areas such as the Nippon Budokan
The Sanja Festival in Asakusa
Many different festivals occur throughout Tokyo. Major events include the Sannō at Hie Shrine, the Sanja at Asakusa Shrine, and the biennial Kanda Festivals. The last features a parade with elaborately decorated floats and thousands of people. Annually on the last Saturday of July, an enormous fireworks display over the Sumida River attracts over a million viewers. Once cherry blossoms bloom in spring, many residents gather in Ueno Park, Inokashira Park, and the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden for picnics under the blossoms.
Harajuku, a neighborhood in Shibuya, is known internationally for its youth style, fashion and cosplay.
In November 2007, Michelin released their first guide for fine dining in Tokyo, awarding 191 stars in total, or about twice as many as Tokyo's nearest competitor, Paris. As of 2017, 227 restaurants in Tokyo have been awarded (92 in Paris). Twelve establishments were awarded the maximum of three stars (Paris has 10), 54 received two stars, and 161 earned one star.
In popular culture
As the largest population center in Japan and the site of the country's largest broadcasters and studios, Tokyo is frequently the setting for many Japanese movies, television shows, animated series' (anime), web comics, light novels, video games, and comic books (manga). In the kaiju (monster movie) genre, landmarks of Tokyo are usually destroyed by giant monsters such as Godzilla and Gamera.
Tokyo is also a popular foreign setting for non-Japanese media. Some Hollywood directors have turned to Tokyo as a backdrop for movies set in Japan. Postwar examples include Tokyo Joe, My Geisha, Tokyo Story and the James Bond film You Only Live Twice; recent examples include Kill Bill, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Lost in Translation, Babel, Inception, The Wolverine and Avengers: Endgame.
Japanese author Haruki Murakami has based some of his novels in Tokyo (including Norwegian Wood), and David Mitchell's first two novels (number9dream and Ghostwritten) featured the city. Contemporary British painter Carl Randall spent 10 years living in Tokyo as an artist, creating a body of work depicting the city's crowded streets and public spaces.

Hello!!
A while ago, I had a selection of people pick between story A, story B, story C, and story D in favor of which you’d rather see as a story, that would eventually be transformed into a short film by me to be pitched to studios!
However, I have good news, you don’t have to choose!!! 💜That is Correct!!
They’re all apart of the same story, well, sort of!! Story A, which follows Anna and her friends & religion, and story B, which follows Cu and his family & his quest. However, —his ability to jinx everything, travel through spirit worlds, and his penchant for sticking his nose where it doesn’t belong — it’s all a recipe for disaster that ends up with him intertwining himself into Ana’s story for the rest of her already haunted life.
# 𝙼𝚊𝚒𝚗 𝙲𝚊𝚜𝚝
Though, as a short film, it will at most take up a 40 minute timeframe - and I’ll have to make sacrifices to squeeze enough important characters in during that time! That being said, I’m so so happy to introduce to you my main characters of my short film, The Deep End!
Anastasia Godebert:
Ana is a young witch who is trying to blossom in a coming of age story inside a twisted fantasy world full of monsters, hexes, curses and malevolent goddess (one of whom she worships).
Her religion is very different from Cu’s, and instead she receives her power from the goddess of perversion, knowledge, and madness: Syomina. Who possessed her body on the night that Cu Windoghast abandoned her and he took off running - nowhere to be seen again.
Anna grew up sheltered in a rich family with her two hyper-religious and abusive parents and her dying grandma. She is followed around by a nocturnal monster named Ryuk and has seen him in glimpses her whole life while she’s awake and he haunts her in her nightmares. She feels like something is wrong with her, that she’s cursed. Is she? Or is this curse really a gift?
When she was born, she had brown hair, but after an event that transpired she was possessed by the Syomina, who protected her at the cost of Anna's home with her family and her sanity. This incident bleached Anna's hair platinum blonde, but as she grows older her dark brown roots have started to grow in again. Anna is forever going through the trauma of that event, and is still unable to control her powers or these possessions that take over her body so often.
She is soul-tied permanently with her best friend and Syomina's champion, Leith. Leith protects her, but this puts a target on Ana's back. Syomina is a very malevolent goddess, one with many enemies and those who cause harm to her followers - especially champions and their soulmate in sight.
Leith and Anna recently discovered they are not the only ones. Another champion, and his soulmate, are somewhere... out there, haunting their dreams. While they try to search for them, Anna and Leith are careful not to alert their enemies of their existence - the vile Zinn clubs and their notorious VIP members. While searching for them, Anna happens to run into Cu for the first time since he abandoned her - Ryuk takes over.
💗🔪⛓️
Neo Pasternak:
Neo is the adopted Dripworth son of the Pasternak family, the Dripworth are a race of people from Bolshoi who are descendants of the goddess of time and spiders, Verochka. Verochka hasn’t ever been known to be a benevolent goddess, and like time itself she is very cruel.
Legends say she once had slaves who were caught in her web and were to work for her until the end of time. Organizing deaths, making sure everything happens the way it happens. That is, until a bird spirit by the name of Miruleli staged a coup against her. Together, her slaves of time tricked her into cutting herself with the sharp material of her own infinite web.
From her blood was born children, and while the slaves didn’t kill her, they now had a bargaining chip. The story gets relatively foggy here, changing from person to person, but this incident is said to be the reason that the Dripworth are now slaves in Bolshoi. Forever doomed to pay for the sins of their mother by organizing under royalty, the government, and the high class. With their six arms, they file, they sew, they work. With their five eyes they watch, they spy and with their mouths they report back to their owners.
Neo works for Violet’s family, The Pasternaks. Who took him in as a child and raised him as though he was their own. However, years and years of conditioning has left him feeling as though he must constantly service this family. Otherwise, he fears he has no worth. He is a fashion designer, and uses his silk to create designer clothing for his family members.
He appears to Leith in her dreams.
🕷️🕸️🪡
Violet Pasternak:
Violet is the firstborn but youngest daughter of the Pasternak family, the baby sister of Neo Pasternak who was adopted he was 12 (Vi was only 5 at the time).
When Neo was brought into their family was the happiest time of all of their lives, but all of that would come to a halt when Violet is diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder at age 6. Although this answered many questions for them, it didn’t leave them feeling relieved that the bouts of sickness that often left their daughter bedridden has no cure and would be a part of her life forever.
Mea and Ethan, the Mr and Missus of Pasternak Manor, already had trouble fitting into their wealthy neighborhood because of their family’s eccentricities - and Violet’s condition did not help. At age 10, Violet was pulled from public school after an incident where she hoveled over and fell unconscious because of the germs other children would pass on to her. Things got better, for a little bit, then got progressively worse. With Violet’s life constantly hung in the balance, Mea begins to cling to her healthy child and her codependency with Neo began.
By the time she turned 12, Violet was beginning to change. She was no longer the smiling, happy little girl that Neo first met. She was growing up, yet had barely any experiences in life because of her condition, and was beginning to show signs of clinical depression. Age 13 Violet begins to cut and make suicide attempts. Mea is absolutely horrified, and this period in Violet's life is the last she remembers of her mother actually consoling her when she was unwell.
Age 14, she becomes incredibly, incredibly sick. They go to the doctor once again expecting it to be a bad case of Bolshoian fever as usual, but instead she's diagnosed with a terminal illness that the doctors say they do not have science to fix - as it is seen as a curse. Mea is crushed, and she clings to Neo after this ever since she heard how much time Vi had left.
Once the symptoms of her curse began to show, she began growing crystals. A sign of the curse. Now 16, The Pasternaks fear that she will not be here tomorrow. Neo and her dad are her rocks. Mea is not.
She appears to Anna in her dreams.
🪻🦠
Cu Windoghast:
Cu is a schizophrenic artist from Tiregul that possesses the ability to see ghosts and speak with the dead, he uses this gift to solve their murders and finish their business so that they can rest in peace.
His ultimate goal is to find his dad, who passed away when he was 13. Gilminye, a vengeful goddess chained under the sea in an eternal prison, will help him find his father in exchange for his help freeing her.
With his new powers, he can enter the spirit world through his dreams. However, due to his witch blood - a lineage of powerful humans who are related to one common ancestor, an undead lich king - he is forced to become extra careful, or else he may activate his undead lineage when he dies.
🐈‍⬛💜🔮
Roo Windoghast:
Roo is Cu Windoghast's younger half sibling, a goblin girl who lived on the opposite side of the nation with her clan and people. One day, when she was still a child, her clan was attacked and then kidnapped by the Bolshoian military, an enemy nation from the east.
Since goblins are a race often discriminated against, the idea was that no one would notice if the military took a bunch of young goblins and trained them for war. One by one, her people were killed off in action while she remained the last girl standing.
On the battlefield, she was fighting a turf war that had nothing to do with her and her people, but as she observed she realized this war was much bigger than a simple squabble over land - that's when she decided to run away, and managed to take out her entire squad with her using the very explosives and firearms they taught her to use from childhood.
Then a wanted fugitive, this is when she finds Cu and he helps smuggle her outside the enemy nation back home to Tiregul - which conveniently he was also headed.
💚🔫💣
Morpheus Desperaux:
Morpheus is a 17 year old young apprentice of The Archives, a nomadic group of spellcasters who travel the world adding to their studies. However, he is from Nombreux - where magic is illegal, and he was caught using it. He and his mentor fled the country, somehow making it over the deadly Dante’s Freezer - the high mountain range that divided Nombreux and Bolshoi. After making it to the other country, they still were being pursued - and Morpheus’s mentor was murdered right in front of him.
Alone, with the ability to see ghosts, Morpheus tries to make it on his own through the 3rd most haunted woods of all of Bolshoi - where he runs into Cu still being pursued. It was a split second interaction before the chase, but Morpheus could see that Cu was also able to sense the spirits all around them - and tried to sneakily trace protection runes into Morpheus’s shoulder when he had bumped into him.
Morrie takes the chance to trust the stranger, and both Cu and his sister Roo take down the Nombric machine that was pursuing him. Morpheus later goes on to become Cu’s apprentice, who is studying the paranormal and the occult alongside the older gentleman.
