Como Ella Siempre lo Hace

"¡Dispárale! Claramente está fingiendo!" Mel me gritó.

"Por favor, cariño, no sé qué está pasando, no dispares, por favor, no dispares." Me rogó la otra Mel, con su maquillaje corriendo por su cara.

Tensé todos y cada uno de los músculos de mi brazo para mantener estable mi agarre tembloroso. Mi arma fue de izquierda, luego a la derecha, luego otra vez a la izquierda. Cuando llegué a casa, Mel estaba tumbada en el sofá viendo un programa de Netflix, como ella siempre lo hace. Cuando salí de la ducha, otra Mel abrió la puerta y entró en el apartamento, arrojando su abrigo al perchero, que no estaba, como ella siempre lo hace.

"No quiero disparar a nadie." Dije en voz alta, sintiendo mi cuerpo temblar en confusión.

"No sé qué clase de broma de mal gusto es esta, pero lo haré yo si tú no lo haces." Mel agarró un cuchillo para frutas de la cocina y lo agitó hacia su doble, mientras que la otra Mel agarró simultáneamente su navaja suiza de su bolsillo, levantándola en defensa propia. "Cariño, ayúdame, tengo miedo." Gritó la otra Mel. Las dos chicas, una de ellas mi encantadora novia, ambas vestidas con un suéter rosa idéntico de gran tamaño y pantalones cortos de mezclilla azul, me miraron desesperadamente en busca de ayuda.

"Llamaré a la policía, ¿qué os parece? ¿Podéis… esperar?" Suspiré, bajando mi arma. No había manera de saber quién era la verdadera Mel y quién no. Sus patrones de habla, aunque tan drásticamente opuestos, pertenecían a la Mel que conozco.

En un instante, la otra Mel gruñó y atacó a la primera Mel con la navaja suiza. Reflexivamente, levanté mi arma y le disparé dos veces en el torso. Cayó al suelo, muerta, mientras Mel sonreía y corría hacia mí, con el cuchillo de fruta apretado aún en su puño.

Oh no. Cierro los ojos con fuerza, sólo para sentir su cuerpo cálido que me envuelve. "Gracias a Dios que sabias quien era la correcta." Sollozó Mel en mi hombro, mi pistola y su cuchillo golpearon el suelo.

Cuando me despierto por la mañana, Mel me besa las mejillas como ella siempre lo hace. Cuando vemos una película juntos, Mel sigue bebiendo un asqueroso brebaje de Coca-Cola y Cerveza de raíz, como ella siempre lo hace. Cuando nos vamos a dormir, Mel sigue insistiendo en agarrarse a su almohada rosa favorita, como ella siempre lo hace.

Pero a veces, cuando piensa que no estoy mirando, como cuando me levanto a por un vaso de agua, por el rabillo de mis ojos, la veo tirando de su cara como si se estuviera ajustando una máscara.

Como ella nunca lo había hecho.

A Failed Exorcism

“Father, I don’t think it worked.” She spoke. Her head wrinkled with worry.

“What, the exorcism?” I raised my brows at her.

“She was fine for a week since, but she’s back at it again. Just yesterday I caught her sneaking around with something in her pocket.”

“The same as the last time?”

“Yes. No. No. Worse. I followed her into the bedroom. She was crouching in the corner, her back to me. Her shoulders were rising and falling, shuddering as if she was giggling, but she was dead silent.” She fidgeted in her seat. “I didn’t dare call out her name. I got close enough to see over her shoulders, and she was, she was, she had her mouth full of blood, chewing on a dead bird.”

“What else?”

“She leapt at me. Dug her nails into me right here, it’s still bleeding,” She raised her bandaged left forearm at me. “She growled at me with the same deep voice as the last time, saying I’m condemned to go to hell, that the flames of the devil will burn me for eternity.”

“Indeed it has gotten worse.”

“What do I do, Father? I’m scared. I dare not talk to her. She looks at me with such hunger and intent. She’s my daughter and I’m afraid of what else she would do to me. How did the demon stay in her?” She burst into tears.

“Miss,” I stood, clutching my bible to my chest. “My exorcism never fails. It’s time to consider the other possibility.”

“What is it?” She looked up at me.

“There wasn’t anything to exorcise.”
