Bokura no kiseki!!
Tumblr media
Wowie,,,, I wonder......... how you guys could've possibly known that I've been Thinking some about Bokura no Kiseki,,
Anyways I would never ever pass up a chance to spread more bnk propaganda.
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most):
Teshimano, he's just a good boy doing his best 10/10. I keep writing and rewriting things I want to add on nfjkdsnfjkds,,, Honestly my first impression of him was "eh, he's the class's Cool Fun Dude (not sure if that makes sense??? but like that's the character archetype I first pinned him as), so he's probably not gonna be the kinda character that'll be one of my faves," and boy was I so so wrong. Even though he doubts himself a lot he still does his best to help his friends in any way he can as he's constantly thrown into past life shenanigans,,, and i just. i think about his character arc a whole lot. Also he's a good big bro and I love his relationship with his little siblings it's adorable.
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped):
Momoka!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a real soft spot for characters who try to be sweet and kind and optimistic despite Everything. She hasn't gotten much of her own spotlight in a while, which is a shame. It's also sad that a lot of the time whenever she Does get spotlight it generally has to do with Lily and Bart.
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave):
I don't really have a clear concept of who's underrated/underappreciated and Not Obscure,,,, Midou/Jared? I love bnk's magic system and so I'm always happy whenever midou shows up and gives more details on that, even just the small things like the whole salt water bathed in moonlight needed for a ritual.... ingredience... Also both Midou and Jared are pretty light-hearted characters which I really appreciate.
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week)
I am really glad that the servant past life characters are getting much more spotlight now. I guess for the minor characters, I do really like Hasabe Anna because A. That One Passing Thought of Eugene potentially tripping and falling into the wedding cake. B. she's a really good character for getting a feel on the more modern life things since she's one of the few that have on-screen friends outside of the past-life gang she frequently hangs out with (and has to struggle with it).
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave):
Yanuma, which might be surprising Considering, but he's hilarious and his character arc is really good.
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason):
It's bokura no kiseki. there's hardly any characters that Aren't on the "torment for fun" list.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell):
I have to confess that I'm not all the way caught up and so I'm sure that there are interesting fun new stuff revealed about Lucas and Lucas's modern counterpart but I'm still upset with them, off to superhell they go. I am a petty person maybe I'll hold this grudge forever.

Bokura no Kiseki: the memory of one’s identity
Okay, by now, you already know this is not rwby related. But if ever you have the time (and patience) to read Bokura no Kiseki, do it, because it is a good story. Spoilers for anyone who haven’t read it and are interested to read.
Okay.
When I read BnK, a question came to mind: “If a person loses the memories of themselves, but is replaced with the memories of someone else’s life, is the person still the same person?”
Interesting that though the author may not have intentionally posed this as the central theme of the series, but it might as well have been. BnK presents us with a very interesting scenario of what really happens when a person suddenly inherits the memories of another person’s life. We all know that this is reincarnation we are talking about, but unlike other reincarnation stories that I’ve seen thus far, their past-selves change their entire identity and outlook of things
In most reincarnation centred stories, past-lives are treated as a bonus to a character. Even go so far as to act like their actual past-selves. Each time I see a troupe like this, I often asked myself: what about the current self that they were born as? In the few reincarnation stories I encountered, series like NG life and BnK actually addresses the clash between the life of the past and present. An actual consequence to their character and identity when they inherit their past-incarnation’s memories.
Interestingly enough, not only do we see this handled well in BnK, the author expands this idea and demonstrates how her characters' struggles with this. Having to balance out the life of the present and trying to solve the mystery of their past-selves; not to mention that those who are affected by this are still teenagers, it's a situation that gives room for a lot of good psychologicaldrama.
Tumblr media
The struggle to accept the burdens of the past and whilst trying to live the life that they currently have; unlike other reincarnation plots, in the end, the characters end up living like their past-selves rather than the current self that they were before inheriting their memories (i.e. THe mummy returns for one).
The identity of their past-selves in itself have personalities that were shaped by the culture and period that they were born in. And thus, even their sense of values of the past for some characters end up clashing with the values of the present. The constant struggle of jumping from past to present changes the outlook of the concept of reincarnation. And especially when the characters once merited from the past and was now reborn as the neglected individual of the class.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Perhaps, I might be over-praising this series, and that I might be overlooking other stories that delve into the same concept. But to me, this story has a lot of potential in making itself known to a wider audience, because the series takes on a whole different level of redefining one’s character in the question of memories and the individual.
Of course, as always, this is no more than my own opinion. And will be open to hearing what others has to say.

Thoughts on Bakemono no Ko (The Beast and the Boy)
I really enjoyed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars, and Wolf Children. Like those other three films from this director, Bakemono no Ko straddles whimsical fantasy with human drama.
Brief summary: this had some nice visuals, sound design, and acting, and the friend I watched it with was thoroughly pleased with the lead beast character. However this story seemed to be in conflict with itself and never quite gelled from act to act. Even though each of the elements packed into the two hour runtime had individual appeal, when put together, the overall message became confused and the impact was reduced.  It’s not a bad anime, but the little weaknesses pile up and make it only an enjoyable fantasy, not as deep and compelling as Hosoda’s previous films.
Major spoilers and long analysis under the cut.
Tumblr media
As a self taught artist, what resonated with me the most was Kumatetsu’s weakness being the result of what also made him strong- that he taught himself everything he knows. Trial and error and personal experience are necessary to fully understand how things work in any field. But there is a ceiling, a point which only learning from and collaborating with others will allow for meaningful progress. Unfortunately, this message, like many others, got buried over time.
The core of the film is how Ren sees Kumatetsu as the kind of person he may grow up to be, as someone “with no parents, no master, who doesn’t listen to anyone”- and fights to avoid that fate. There are two ways this is taken- literally, with the beast world storyline, and metaphorically, with Ren transitioning from an angry child to a well balanced adult in the human world.
Unfortunately, these two ideas struggle against each other. As a fantasy action drama, the characters and locations feel a little underdeveloped (the small main cast are just accessories to Kumatetsu and Ren, and the beast city is mostly flat and generic outside of Kumatetsu’s home). The basic rules of magic are also unclear until the climactic action sequence, which resulted in a quick series of confusing reveals (all humans develop telekinesis in the beast world? Those powers also work in the human world?? Telekinesis also means Ichirouhiko can change his body? Getting hit with an unsheathed katana just knocked Ichirouhiko unconscious??) .
Tumblr media
If the primary story is a human drama about Ren’s coming of age, there is an awful lot of time and focus on the big action scenes and fantasy.  The quiet, delicate moments of real life and re-integrating into the human world get lost and overwhelmed. I wasn’t sure until the ending that the story was ultimately about Ren’s return to the human world because of how much priority was given to the fantasy adventure, and how jarring the moments of realism were in comparison. It’s a clash of tone that never quite feels balanced. The Girl Who Leapt Through Time also suffered a bit of this tone clash, but it was condensed to just one major moment that didn’t take up much of the film.
A quick list of other distractions: -  lots of 3d models, motion capture, and a few unnatural camera movements - “visiting the grandmasters” could have been interesting worldbuilding but passed at breakneck pace - Ren’s ability to predict Kumatetsu’s movements purely by mimicking him is superhuman enough to be confusing  - Ren is able to re-enter the beast world without any issue after his (implied) first time leaving it, despite no indication that he ever left or learned the way back in - Ichirouhiko feels superfluous, existing just to give the third act climax a big action sequence. - Ichirouhiko summons a whale (presumably in reference to moby dick, a book he picked up 30 seconds earlier) instead of something more meaningful to him, such as a boar
All that being said I’d like to end on a positive note. Despite my distrust of cute things, BnK has one of the cutest mascot characters of all time and I love this thing.

Dragon!! Imagine if the BnK characters played Among Us! 👀
GOD.
THE DRAMA. they’re split between the ones that take every kill personally, the ones that are just like “whoa, chill it’s a game,” and the ones that are more interested in doing tasks than the whole murder mystery fun
OH BOY this is turning out to be long haha (gonna put it under a read more so i don’t obliterate everyone’s dash)
Momoka is like me whenever i get imposter in that i feel extremely bad killing anyone so i just sabotage and run around
Moto, Hiroki, and Zeze are the best at playing innocent and deflecting blame. Second best are Midou, Meguro, and Tsuzuki because no one expects them to be the imposter and they tend to blend in with the background
Minami and Ootomo are the ones that get really into deducing things. If they’re imposter they use that to make super tight alibis. Minami is the MOST dramatic about it and if he’s imposter he goes after anyone who killed him when they were imposter
Nanaura, Yanuma, and Yamada are horrible at lying and someone always manages to find a crack in their alibis. Nanaura as imposter always goes after Nishina first which is generally the tell for him.... It gets to the point where if Nishina dies first Nanaura gets blamed no matter what. Zeze would use that to his advantage a couple of times.
(it’s bully nishina time lmao)
One round Zeze and Nishina are both imposters and Zeze kills Nishina first and reports it almost instantly like “oh no who could have done this” while Nishina curses at him from ghost chat.
Nishina isn’t that bad at lying but whenever he says something someone (Moto, Teshimano, Hiroki, or Zeze) starts calling him suspicious and he gets voted out very frequently. They are the ones on his hit list whenever he’s imposter.
Minami and Takao get bullied (goddamn lovesick idiots) for always sticking up for one another even if they know the other is the imposter. “you don’t have all the facts” “which are???” “i love them” basically.
Maki always votes for Nanaura out of spite. (rip)
Teshimano always gets annoyed whenever someone reports a dead body while he’s in the middle of a task like “couldn’t this have waited i was almost done fixing the wires :\” He always changes accessories between rounds and you better believe he bought all of them.
He and Zeze get overdramatic in a funny way like “bro....... how could you do this......” “i’m sorry bro i had no choice :(” “never talk to me or my sons again” “NOOOO”
Speaking of which whenever Teshimano is in a corner he always goes to the good old “think of the pets/kids (depending on which ones he has at the moment)” spiel and the goofs (Zeze, Hiroki, and Moto) and sweet Momoka are like “no no he has a point” whereas everyone else is like “it’s too late to beg for forgiveness perish”
that’s all i have for now!! thank you for bringing this to my attention because it’s so very good

Bokura no Kiseki: Teshimano/Zeze
48. Fake Dating
53. Mutual Pining
Okay so first of all: spoilers (and will probably get fairly long because i’ve thought too much about this exact scenario)
Oh boy so here we go.
So whenever anyone figured out that Minami was Veronica one of the questions they ask is if he started dating Takao before or after they knew Takao was Rida (if it was after they remembered then was the dating more of a subterfuge to conceal the relationship of bodyguard/princess) to which he’s like “no no, I knew I was Veronica but this was before I knew any of you also had memories”. But like. What If?
Except it’s Teshimano and Zeze trying to sloppily hide the fact that Zeze’s Prince Eugene. Ootomo thinks this is an awful plan, and they all drop it.
Except the next day Nishina decides he’s gonna be the nosy smartass he is and with the subtlety of an elephant on fire, when the classroom is mostly empty, goes
“You, know, the way Teshimano always hangs around Zeze kinda reminds me of how Vince always shadowed the prince haha what a funny coincidence haha :) :) :).”
and with 0.5 minutes to think, Zeze blurts out the most recently made excuse.
“Yea, uh, we’re dating???? So get out of here with your past life nonsense shenanigans I want no part of………” and then his brain manages to catch up with his mouth and he promptly shuts up. And everyone in that classroom is just like wait what. Ootomo is mentally banging his head against the wall.
Teshimano is like “would it REALLY kill you to warn me about these sorts of things beforehand! Why do you do this to me now I have to ad-lib”
And so begins the fake dating au. Mutual pining? neither of them actually think the other could possibly ACTUALLY like them. Minami’s little circle of Trustworthy Friends has made a betting table for Whether it’s All Acting vs It’s Legit (And They’re in Denial). guess which side would win in the end.

bokura no kiseki, or as I like to think of it as “a bunch of kids having kin drama”
(Bokura no Kiseki is a very good manga about high schoolers remembering their past lives in another world and coming to deal with it and the mysteries surrounding their deaths and strange occurrences threatening their everyday life)

I need MORE about that fake dating BNK AU!!!
FNDKJSNFKJSNFKJDNFKSNFJKDSNDS I don’t have much more i’m sorry........ Here’s some tidbits
If Nana ever found out about this (I can’t currently come up with a way that she would) she’d be 100% on board with her big brother dating Zeze because that means she’ll be able to play with him more! It’s a win/win situation in her book.
It’s ALWAYS exaggerated whenever Nanaura and/or Nishina are nearby (since they’re the ones that are gunning to find the prince). It gets to the point where Zeze officially dubs Nishina as The Mood Ruiner. Minami agrees with that statement unironically. Also if Ootomo (or anyone with more than one(1) braincell) is nearby when shenanigans happen, he’d just shake his head like “You idiots are absolutely gonna get caught. Is this even working the way you want it to.”
Uhhh,,, that’s it for now probably? I’ll probably add more as I think of it nfdkjfnkjsnfjksdf

Do you have and favourite bnk character? Or do just just alternate between most of them (me)
NFDKJNSFKJDNSJFKNDSJFS I CAN’T BELIEVE I NEVER SAW THIS BEFORE I”M SORRY!!!
my fave is teshimano! he’s a good boy and his character is so fun, he’s just trying to keep everyone from killing each other and that’s valid. he’s just a whole lot of fun the way he interacts with everyone else he’s like a bridge between most of them all!! hhhhhhh i don’t wanna go too in-depth on how i view his character here because a lot of it has Spoilers so it might be a separate post but that’s my bnk son boy allowed.
also i love his family dynamics he’s such a good big bro
the bnk characters are just so good tho so alternating faves is extremely valid!!!!!!!!!!
