I know this may be too far back, but could you mention the source where the hymn “ai geneia pasai” is said to be based on a lament by Demeter?
It's been more than two years since I made that post and I unfortunately couldn't find the exact source I had used then. My impression is that I had used a wikipedia page because this is my go-to but the ones I checked now (i.e Byzantine music) have changed in structure and some content since the last time I visited.
So, I found some webpages which mention the same thing but they are in Greek:
In this third site (link), it mentions the same thing and cites wikipedia as the source, so either it indeed was in Wikipedia up to a point or I am not finding the correct page.
Anyway, what must be taken into account is that this is not an established truth but a hypothesis based on the structure and the morphology of the hymn, which is why I was repeating the "it is believed" in the original post. Based on the Greek sites I cited above, I summarized what could work as evidence that supports this hypothesis in English:
parts of the hymn - the less obviously Christian parts - are written in High Attic Greek, with words like "έαρ", "παντάναξ", which were far more common in Ancient Greek than Koine or Medieval Greek
the content of the hymn contains elements not typical to Byzantine themes, such as a focus on "κάλλος", the beauty (of Jesus), which instead was a very popular theme in Ancient Greece
there is an orphic hymn chanted in Eleusinian mysteries as Demeter's lament for Persephone that bears similarities in its context, although there are no identical similarities
this is something you will actually find mentioned in the current wikipedia page about Byzantine music; the first centuries a lot of the Christian compositions were not original but rather copied or inspired by earlier ancient melodies. O Glyky Mou Ear (Ae Geneae Pasae) is according to a church site (also in Greek) composed before the time of St. Romanos the Melodist, so before the 6th century, making it a likely contender to be one of the chants inspired by pagan ones.
this hymn has some characteristic archaic tonal elements in its music but I don't know enough about music theory to perceive this and explain it myself
also, some of the Byzantine hymns were not composed by a certain poet or composer but they were created by the folk and passed from one generation to the next and then they were "polished" by Byzantine μαΐστροι (meisters, maestros). Because this hymn has an unknown date and unknown composer, it is generally hypothesized to belong to this category of hymns, as well. This one, I remember reading it in wikipedia for sure, I don't know why I can't find it now -_-
These were the most relevant parts mentioned in these sites but it has some other interesting info about other Greek cultural continuities as well, I guess, if you google translate...

This composition is about emperor Basil II Porphyrogennetos, "the Purple-born", nicknamed the Bulgar Slayer (Boulgaroktonos). This nickname was earned after his conflict and annhilitation of the First Bulgarian Empire, the principal European foe of the Eastern Romans during that era. A proficient statesman, the Empire flourished in many aspects during his reign, and his legacy is one of a national hero in Greece, whilst being traditionally negative in Bulgaria.

THEODORA OF BYZANTINE RANT:
OKAY! So I've been completely obsessed with this woman since I was in middle school, alright? I legit want 'purple is the noblest shroud' tattooed on my body forever at some point because what a fucking power quote. I submitted a google doodle in high school about her, alright? I'm a fan.
That being said, I am also recently obsessed with SIX: The Musical. For those of you unaware, it's a musical that tells the story of Henry the VIII's six wives. You know, like 'The Tudors?' Like 'That Boleyn Girl'? Like a gazillion other stories? Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Six and it's portrayal of the wives as something separate from Henry.
YET YOU KNOW WHO HAS YET TO HAVE A MUSICAL, TV SHOW, OR EVEN JUST PUBLIC RECOGNITION????
I mean this woman was born to a bear keeper at a circus. became a child prostitute out of desperation, and ended up being empress of the fucking Byzantine Empire. Justinian didn't pass a single law after she died because she was the one really pulling the strings. This god damned power couple (and their genius general Belisarius -- who, side note, literally did the whole retire and return for one final battle thing) almost reunited Rome! THE FUCKING ROMAN EMPIRE!!! And if Theodora hadn't died, they might have!
Give this woman, who passed laws against sex trafficking, a movie I stg. I will write the damned thing! Give this woman, who got Justinian to change the law to marry her, a musical. I do not write songs. I do write stories and scripts. Get me a musically inclined partner and I'll have at it!
Why are we not talking about Theodora? Why are we not talking about her and Justinian's attempts to reunite Rome? Why are we not talking about her being a feminist and one of the first outspoken miaphysitists (early Christians) to rule? Her bad-fucking-ass speech to her husband and his court of advisors, who all wanted to flee, that ended with 'purple is the noblest shroud' and a conviction to stay and face a riot that they untimely succeeded in stomping out UNDER HER ORDERS??? The woman who Justinian saw as his intellectual equal despite her background and gender.
Where is her story? Where is her movie? Her TV show? Her musical?
You know what? Fuck it, this is a call to action. You write music? Shoot me a message, leave a comment. Let's write this thing. I'll produce it myself.
If you actually read this far, namaste, and thank you.

Belisarius - Epic Byzantine Music
I’m often skeptical of songs claiming to be ‘epic’, but this one takes the cake for best. Written and sung by the talented and intelligent Farya Faraji, and based around historical music and themes, the song tells the deeds of the great Byzantine general, Flavius Belisarius, one of the ‘Last of the Romans’, and considered one of the greatest military commanders in history in conquest of the lost territories of the Western Roman Empire of Emperor Justinian I.

The band Anastasia was formed in 1987 as Apokrifna Realnost and changed their name to Anastasia in 1989.
Their music is a blend combining Byzantine past, through Eastern Orthodox Church music with a rich range of ethnic Balkan musical rhythms.

That indiscreet question she put to the prophet, How quickly she knew he would tell her to drop it, The future was real to him, but he would never reveal it to her.
She lowered her face, she averted her eyes, Prayed that the sea wind would cover her cries, Was forced to concede, That shame and disgrace had no meaning for her    In those tropical skies.
She tries to smile, But it looks like he’s seen through her style, So it takes her a while.

Farya: *arranges song with the lyrics of Kostis Palamas' poem about Digenis Akritas*

Despotate of Epirus.
A rugged and mountainous region, Epirus was the north-west area of ancient Greece. It was inhabited by the Greek tribes of the Chaonians, Molossians, and Thesprotians. It was home to the sanctuary of Dodona, the oldest oracle in ancient Greece, and the second most prestigious after Delphi. Unified into a single state in 370 BC by the Aeacidae dynasty, Epirus achieved fame during the reign of Pyrrhus of Epirus who fought the Roman Republic in a series of campaigns. Epirus subsequently became part of the Roman Republic along with the rest of Greece in 146 BC, which was followed by the Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire. Following the fall of Constantinople to the Fourth Crusade, Epirus became the center of the Despotate of Epirus, one of the successor states to the Byzantine Empire.

Favorite musical artist / group you started listening to this year?
I haven't discovered any new artists that I listen to loads (I tend to have one or two of their songs for the vibes and then see what Spotify shuffles for me), but Marco Mengoni has launched himself to the top of my music with Due Vite.
(I doubt he properly counts, though, because I've been listening to him for a couple of years, but he was my #3 artist this year so I'm putting him in anyway!)
