If you're still doing to the choose violence ask game, 8 and 13 for critical role
choose violence ask game
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
Well for one thing, as I alluded to in a previous ask, I don't tend to recommend quite as strongly against watching the Orion Acaba episodes of C1 as a lot of people do, both because I think they've got some really good moments and because I think people sometimes need to get some perspective on what this table being upset with a player actually looks like.
Other than that? I think that—particularly on this side of the fandom—there's a general aversion to even hinting that you don't like Marisha's characters very much. And I completely understand why, but I think it's worth pointing out that it's not 2018 anymore. Campaign 1 has been over for five and a half years. Bowlgate happened before Mollymauk even died, and both of those things happened before many current fans started watching the show in the first place. There is a wide gulf between misogynistic harassment and just not really vibing with someone's narrative choices, and there's an even wider gulf between misogynistic harassment and pointing out a character's flaws to engage with them.
Now of course there is absolutely still misogyny in this fandom and I think we should still be telling people to cut that shit out, but Marisha Ray is an adult woman in her 30's and does not need to be obsessively defended from any and all mildly non-positive commentary. She does not need to be exalted above everyone else and treated like neither she nor her characters can do anything wrong. I honestly don't get how you can do that, even tongue-in-cheek, and not think you're doing her a disservice.
13. worst blorbofication
Ashton. I think a lot of people have really chosen only to pay attention to those moments where Ashton is dispensing wisdom and are ignoring the multiple statements by Taliesin that Ashton's not doing okay, at all. They're not trying to compartmentalize or internalize what they're going through, but just because they're open about what's wrong with them doesn't mean they're not dealing with their issues poorly. Transparency is not the soul of healthiness.
One of the most interesting things to me about Taliesin's characters is that—with the exception of Percy and Molly, apparently, provided you get them both some weed, as well as Kingsley and Caduceus—they'd all hate each other, and all of them probably with legitimate reasons. We see that in Ashton's argument with Percy (where both of them had valid points on the issue no I will not hear otherwise), but I also have to raise my eyebrows at the assertion that Ashton would get along with Caduceus. Because you can't tell me that Caduceus's tendency to treat people like projects wouldn't immediately clash with Ashton's stubborn refusal to be saved, and as others have pointed out, Caduceus "pain doesn't make people" Clay would probably end up seriously pissing off Ashton "there is strength, but there is pain" Greymoore. (They'd also definitely try to pulverize Molly.)
I dunno man, Ashton really gets flattened a lot, and it isn't escaping my notice that fandom opinion of them tends to change purely based on whether or not they're supporting Blorbo or Ship. Which is a damn shame, because Ashton's probably one of the most interesting characters in the party.

Ooh! 9, 10, 12, 21, 22 for The Boys 😈
9. worst part of canon
Lots of terrible parts in canon ("look at all these supes, they're so morally corrupt, they have weird sex!!" anyone?), but the one thing that annoys me the most is still this:
Tumblr media
(It's not just Trump, I actually hate all the instances where they try to write contemporary politics into the show. It's fine to want to draw parallels to our world, but be a little more subtle and interesting when you do it, maybe?)
A close second is the internal inconsistencies and the unresolved/abandoned plot points in canon.
10. worst part of fanon
I am irrationally annoyed by Domlander, and let's just say there is A LOT of Domlander content out there. That's 100% my problem though, and I'm not telling anyone to stop enjoying their daily Domlander fic (I'm sure plenty of people are annoyed by my preferences).
People calling Homelander John will make me pull my hair out.
Not sure if the Youtube/Reddit sigma male crowd counts as part of fanon; in any case, they certainly project a lot of stuff onto the characters. But they bewilder me more than annoy me, maybe because I don't really hang out much on Reddit and/or in the Youtube comment section? Same goes for the "X could beat Homelander easily!!!" crowd.
12. the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them
The obvious choice here is Madelyn Stillwell - a lot of people really hate her, and I very clearly don't. I don't want to tell people what kind of characters to like or hate, but I do wish more people loved irredeemable* badass bitches. (*well, I guess in classic The Boys fashion, she is partially redeemed by having a kid)
21. part of canon you think is overhyped
Frankly, the super powers. I'm not interested in them beyond exploring how they change how the characters perceive reality. I do like some of the world building around the super hero cult in the The Boys universe, but I don't really need countless demonstrations of various super powers just for the sake of having super powers demonstrated on screen. (I'll make an exception for the Herogasm supe fight but only because it is sexy as hell and also advances the plot.)
22. your favorite part of canon that everyone else ignores
Tumblr media
(Emphasis on "we both know why.")

for your choose violence ask game:
9. worst part of canon?
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
9. worst part of canon
The worst part of canon in TOS and TOS movie era is Shatner's ego. There are so, so many scenes that were either taken from others and given to him, or cut out so he could get more screen time. As a Spones shipper, knowing that a lot of the scenes that were cut were Sponesy makes it even worse.
In the current era, the systematic erasure of Doctor McCoy is so goddamn aggravating. They were a triumvirate. They all three go together. To single out just Spirk constantly when referencing the old eras is so goddamn annoying. I also worry that SNW won't bring in McCoy and leave him out, yet again. I didn't want SNW to bring Kirk in, but if he's there, Bones has to be there, too.
17. there should be more of this type of fic/art
I'd like to see more disability rep in fics, especially with canon disabled characters. TOS didn't do the best job of it, but y'all. These characters go through some really traumatic shit during their job. PTSD is a thing, and despite wicked advanced healing devices, even Doctor McCoy can't heal everything. Don't be afraid to write or draw characters losing limbs, using prosthetics or mobility aids, having depression and/or anxiety, or any number of things. My ideal Future Gay Space Communism doesn't erase or shy away from disability, it designs a future with disability in mind.

For the Choose Violence Ask: 1, 7, 8 and 25!
(From this ask HERE)
Thanks, friend! I'm so ready to answer these! Let's get started but before I do I want to remind everyone that just because this is a "choose violence" ask that these are just my opinions. This is all for fun and if you disagree, that's fine. Don't take this too seriously.
Warning: Spoilers for My Hero Academia, mentions of abuse, obsession, and mild Fire Emblem Awakening, Fates, and Engage spoilers.
The character everyone gets wrong.
Endeavour from BNHA. I'm starting off strong, aren't I?
I am not here to defend any of Endeavour's actions. I understand that many elements within Endeavour are very triggering for many people who have experienced abusive relationships. Yes, as a character he is an unforgivable monster. If it's therapeutic for fans to see his family tell him, "We don't forgive you, we will never forgive you, and we won't forget what you've done" I'm 100% on board. Fuck Endeavour and his shitty actions!
Yet, on the flip side I think Endeavour is a character foil to All Might as the series asks the question: "What does it mean to be a hero?"
All Might represents the most "ideal" answer: You help people because it's the right thing to do. You aren't seeking power, fame, glory, or prestige. Being a hero is born out of a pure desire.
However, Endeavour is clearly fuelled by his jealousy, hatred, pride, and his desire to surpass All Might. This desire funnels into his home life and the broken family Endeavour creates with his own hands. One of the most important relationships in Endeavour's life is ruined and destroyed by his own hands. We see this with his treatment of his children (Touya and Shouto in particular) and his wife.
To me it so cathartic to watch all of Endeavour's development centred around him realizing how shitty of a person he truly was. It's about him having to face his dirty past and be unable to run away from it. Literally, poetic justice to have this abusive, selfish, prideful asshole forced to face his mistakes, not able to make excuses, and have to own up.
Now, the series offers a lot of grey areas regarding Endeavour that many don't like. That's fine. He can be the irredeemable character in your eyes and I think it's 100% justified.
So TL;DR: I think Endeavour, while having some of the most shitty character traits and backstory, has many grey areas and is meant to be a tool in the plot/overall story that asks the question "What does it mean to be a hero?" However, if it helps you to just go "fuck this character, all my homies hate him", go for it.
7. What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how the fandom acts about them?
-Inhale, exhale-
I've begun to see this trend with some Fire Emblem ladies, so I'm going to talk about all of them here. I cannot stand when people take complex characters like Tharja (Awakening), Camilla (Fates), and Ivy (Engage) and boil them down to "They're in love/obsessed with the Avatar character and it's sooooo quirky!"
Look, I know Tharja's supports with both Robin's has obsession in there. I know Camilla loves all their siblings, but Corrin especially and several supports/plot lines revolves around this. I know Ivy tells Alear to their face "I love you" and it's awkward-cute-kinda cringe. Which by the way, I am so into Ivy and how her appearance/first introduction VS reality is off.
HOWEVER, there is more to these three ladies than just their relationship with the Avatar Character!
Tharja has hilarious supports with the other cast! I love her awkward, weird, creepy vibe. Or what about the can of worms when we look at her relationship with Noire?
Camilla has her sense of love for her family to the point she becomes petty. Look at her supports with Xander! Or what about her fear of others leaving her. Look at her supports with Selena! Or what about her supports with Niles?
Ivy's supports with Alycrst, Diamant, and Alfred are so interesting! Or her supports with her retainers! Or Hortensia! She's such a complex character with so many regrets, hopes, and fears!
Also, if we can stop reducing them to their breast sizes, I'd be grateful, thanks.
8. Common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about.
Coffee Shop AUs are a low B tier/ high C tier trope. Look, I get that people are into the tone/vibes of coffee shops. I know that the AU can create many awesome fluff stories and are a break from heavier stories. However, I find them to be (for the most part) kind of boring.
25. Common fandom complaint that you're sick of hearing.
I've rewritten this at least three times, but I think being concise is best:
-Shipping for the most part is all for fun and isn't meant to be taken seriously or an indication of the person's "morals". Blocking and blacklisting tags exists for a reason. Use it liberally if you must and move on.

choose violence ask game: 20. part of canon you found tedious or boring and/or 18. it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...
I can't think of an answer for 18 so I'll just answer 20 ❤️
20. Part of canon you found tedious or boring?
Its been said by others but the copaganda. I'm sorry but it seems like every season there's some storyline or another where Athena abuses her power as a sergeant and we're all supposed to be like "You go girl!" about it and I'm just sick of it. Athena is a great character when she's not being such a fucking cop (derogatory) and I want her to be fired. If this is the era of breaking cycles, fire her.

For the 🔥choose violence 🔥 ask game!
Disclaimer: provocative name aside, I am not actually trying to be mean here, these are just my opinions offered for Entertainment Purposes™️, and I’m not mad at anyone who has a different opinion.
4. what was the last straw that made you finally block that annoying person?
I'm lucky if I remember why I blocked anyone. I just have to assume past!Anne had a reason. 😂
8. common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
Okay, so this one's about Merrill, but before I say it I have to qualify that I am not on the Merrill hate train. I love Merrill, I think she's a great character, and I don't think she's wrong for wanting to restore her people's history. I do think that what she's doing is dangerous enough that it's in conflict with the duties of a Keeper to protect her people--but the thing is Merrill knows that, and that's why she agrees to leave the clan. She believes this is too important, more important than becoming a Keeper, which she also says she would have been terrible at. I do think Merrill is not being totally honest with herself about the danger at first; in Act I, she's very quick to insist that it's fine and she's got everything under control. But I think her years in Kirkwall make her more mindful--she sees a lot of demons, a lot of blood magic, she sees how Anders struggles with Justice, and she almost falls to another Pride demon herself if she goes into the Fade with Hawke. (Personally, I also think this might have something to do with her proximity to Audacity on the mountain, and then having more distance from it in Kirkwall, because I do think the Pride demon was influencing both her and Marethari. In the short story "Merrill" it's very clear that it called out to both of them, rather than Merrill seeking it out on her own.)
By Act III, she's undeniably aware of the danger because she asks Hawke to come along for that very reason. What Merrill is doing is undeniably dangerous, but dangerous does not necessarily mean evil or wrong. In the end, though I think there's undoubtedly some level of pride in her motives still, I do think Merrill is fully aware of the risks, and believes that the possible gain is worth it, and takes every precaution she can.
Furthermore, I think that Marethari fails in her duty to her people when she goes to the demon and allows it to possess her. Her responsibility is to protect the clan. When Merrill leaves, Marethari needs to accept her choice and let her go. She needs to move the clan on, out of reach of whatever danger she believes Merrill poses. If they need to contact another clan, raise new halla, she has years to do that. Instead, she keeps them on Sundermount for the better part of a decade because she (and her own pride) simply can't let it go, and in the end she leaves her clan leaderless and possibly dead because she (and, I think, Audacity) convinces herself that only she is capable of protecting Merrill. But Merrill isn't her responsibility anymore. Her clan is. And she abandons them.
So the one thing that kind of sticks in my craw is the idea that Merrill must be an unparalleled genius because she successfully reverse-engineered an eluvian from a shard. Because the thing is she didn't do that! That's the thing she didn't do! She never successfully got the mirror working in canon. Maybe in the next game, for some world states, we'll find out that she did finish it, or maybe we'll never hear about it again; as of the information we have right now, she never made it work.
And I know this one is contentious, because there's a big interpretive gap as far as how close Merrill was to making the eluvian work. And I'm not trying to step on anyone's headcanons here; there's room for speculation and when it comes to headcanon or fanworks there's truly nothing wrong with going the route that she was really, really close, and maybe succeeded down the road.
But as far as canon, we simply do not know. We do not know how close she was. We do not know whether she had built it correctly and simply needed the power to activate it, or whether there was some fundamental flaw in her theory she hadn't figured out, or whether it was wrong from the ground up. We do not know whether Audacity truly knew what she needed or would have given it to her had Marethari not interfered. We don't even know whether it's possible to build an eluvian in a post-Veil world, for that matter! We don't know, and we probably never will.
In fact, it's unclear to me whether Merrill actually knows the full extent of what eluvians are supposed to do. She says in her Act II quest "Mirror Image" that she knows that they were used for communication over distances (which was the extent of ancient Tevinter's understanding of them, and what Duncan remarks in Origins), but she doesn't know exactly how they work. I don't remember her ever saying that it's supposed to be a physical portal you can travel through. There's a moment where Hawke asks what's wrong with it and Merrill exclaims, frustrated, "Well... look at it! Do you think it's just supposed to sit there not doing anything?" I'm not convinced she actually knows what it's supposed to do, only that it's important to her people's history. I'm not blaming her for her lack of knowledge here--I think as fans we've gotten so used to hearing about eluvians that it's easy to forget their existence isn't common knowledge in-universe even among the Dalish. Ariane's clan was safeguarding an exceptionally rare text about eluvians and even she didn't know what they were (in part because most modern elves canonically are not fluent in ancient Elvish, something else I think people kind of forget).
Again, I don't think Merrill is wrong for wanting to discover and restore her people's history. If anything, the gaps in their knowledge only make that more important. I'm also not saying any of this because I'm trying to refute the idea that Merrill is smart. I think she's very clever and resourceful and I think this shows in a great deal of her dialogue with other characters.
I just don't think we can know, based on canon, that her theories were 100% correct and she is now the foremost expert on eluvians. Again, I have zero issue with this as headcanon--I really am not coming for anyone who holds it as such! My only disagreement is when it's put forth as Fact, and like anyone who takes a different view of canon is wrong and is trying to tear down Merrill.
Because like all my faves in this series, it is possible for a character to be good and compelling and interesting and even right about a lot of things without being right about everything all the time.
16. you can’t understand why so many people like this thing (characterization, trope, headcanon, etc)
Okay we'll take this one for whatever values of "so many people," because at this point I don't really see this one come up all that much, but as a huge Sera fan, I do not understand the appeal of the "Sera is Andruil/has a fragment of Andruil" fan theory, and I don't think I ever will.
For one thing, by the end of Trespasser we know that Solas and Mythal are walking around in the waking world still because they are exceptions. The rest of the Evanuris are not hiding among mortals. We know where the others are! They're in the Fade! Solas trapped them there! That was a pretty significant thing that happened!
For another, Solas and Andruil were not friends. If Sera was or was carrying a piece of Andruil, and Solas recognized her, I think he would have reacted strongly. Maybe he wouldn't be capable of killing her on the spot in his current state, but also I sort of doubt he would be walking around gently prodding her to remember who she is.
The theory also seems to be partially based on the misapprehension that Sera's archery skills are somehow magical, which I've already talked about.
But also, and more importantly to me personally, I feel like it just ruins Sera's character. Sera's story is that of a young adult with a lot of unrecovered childhood trauma, and deep issues with identity, rejection, and abandonment, still trying to find a place where she belongs and discover what she believes about the world. What does her unwittingly carrying around a piece of an elven god add to that? What does it add to her painful memories of Lady Emmald, to her sense of alienation from other city elves? It undermines the perspective she brings to the Inquisition as a commoner, a Nobody who is proud of being nobody. It completely ruins her relationship with Solas, turning them from a fascinating set of foils (the ancient elf who broke the world vs. the modern elf who is in so many ways the product of the world he created) into just two ancients arguing with each other. If anything, it feels like papering over everything that makes her complicated and interesting in an attempt to "fix" her: Look, she is Elfy after all! She's the Elfiest!
Sera doesn't need to be secretly an ancient goddess to be a compelling character.

Hm, 9 for Guide.
9. worst part of canon
While I have an endless list of nitpicks and things I didn't really like about Guide, nothing really jumps out as worst? Hmm...
So, somewhat hilariously, in the end Guide wrote itself into the same corner as final season game of thrones. Textually the main stakes were clearly the apocalyptic zombie hordes, but no one gave a shit about the zombies, the emotional stakes were the evil queen whose spent most of the story fucking everything over and ruining the protagonist's lives.
GoT chose to deal with the zombies first and make the finale dealing with Cersie, which makes zero sense whatsoever but theoretically allowed for an emotionally compelling finale (theoretically bc then they fucked that up too)
Guide instead chose to resolve its Praesi business first, and then make saving the world the actual finale. This makes sense but my god was the whole siege of Keter a slog I only barely cared about until they were finally in the palace.
Alt answer- having Karios and Anaxares as secondary villains, and then trying to pivot to a main threat with ten times the word count and 1% the fun.

@essayofthoughts asked me to choose violence for CR and FE3H, so here is the FE3H post.
the character everyone gets wrong
Byleth. And admittedly I can see where it's difficult, because the game suffers from trying to make a protagonist who is an individual character while also acting as a self-insert, but Byleth isn't truly a self-insert. Her whole story starts out with her in isolation and ignorance and ends with her being literally enlightened and having the goddess dwell within her, and she discovers that she finds herself at her most complete when she's teaching and guiding and that she has a hidden talent in faith and healing magic. She discovers part of her heritage in a race that was nearly destroyed, and she keeps that legacy alive in her leadership.
Genuinely, as a Christian who's done a lot of deconstructing over the past few years, that story is really meaningful to me. And that doesn't mean it has to be meaningful to everyone, just that it's frustrating when it gets misunderstood as just "what Rhea made Byleth do" or something or even outright rejected as "Byleth should be fully HUMAN because humans are BETTER". Again, I get where it comes from, but full offense: neither of those stories are interesting.
10. worst part of fanon
The "Crest system". Y'all I cannot stress this enough: the Crest system doesn't exist. Yeah, some people have magic dragon blood, and some of that magic dragon blood is abused to help perpetuate an aristocracy. But there are several noble families that don't have the magic dragon blood who are more powerful and respected than the families who do, and blaming the Crests for everything is completely ignorant of the fact that abusive systems would exist completely independent of the magic dragon blood and that this is in some ways part of the point. Also, some of y'all are real weird about how you talk about Rhea in this context.
13. worst blorbofication
Ugh, probably Claude. He represents a middle ground among the factions who primarily wants to learn the truth, and his route is in many ways about his own enlightenment alongside Byleth's; he's the one who ends up actually ending the threat within Fodlan's shadows. But he keeps getting flattened into this "let's smash the church bestie" character at best because tons of people in the fandom like the idea of tearing down religion but just don't want to be violent about it, when that was very much not the point Claude was trying to make.

🤜 just over and over again, from Reiko, who has no chill and chooses horrific violence CONSTANTLY
Punch meme || open
After the eighth time, Hotaru finally turns around to see who it is.
Oh. It's Reiko.
Unfortunately for Reiko, despite any glow-up he might have gotten in the MKX comic and in MK1, the individual currently embodying Hotaru in this situation remembers when MK4 came out. This individual remembers Reiko's ending of just walking through a portal. They remember that being changed to him putting on Shao Kahn's helmet. And they remember making fun of Reiko for over 20 years, along with everybody else in the MK fandom, including the Midway team making fun of him in MKD Konquest mode.
So here are some 2015 depictions of how Hotaru thought about, thinks about, and will always think about Reiko.

not to be a dick, but if they had both actually retired (as in...actually retired), they both probably would've been fine. they both made their own beds.
(wolsey is a little bit less bcus heavier men associated with 'vice' and all of that boring and and biased and hateful paradigm, a little bit more because he received a fairly positive spin in wulfe hall series, and more has been a little bit less lately because of the latter but...still)
common fandom opinion that everyone is wrong about
his contemporaries (not all, but rather a lot, considering the magnitude of his deeds and choices) defended and liked hviii a lot. it is what it is. people are fucking weird about those in power, it often causes them to excuse and condone acts they wouldn't were they committed by anyone else.
ship you’ve unwillingly come around to
i'd say SAME ANSWER except in my own AU histfic i have outlined a pairing for jane seymour that i've never seen before, and so far i actually really like their dynamic and the scenes between them as i've written them... it's kind of a fucked up ship tho so we'll see what the response is, lol (it's an arranged marriage)
