repost • @claireannabaker Over the last few years I have been filling book after book with graphite stick drawings. They are always from observational experiences, sometimes in the park, or the garden, or the monsoon storms, which became the compositional starting point for the storm paintings. The sketches are inherently fast as I try to keep up with the shifting light, as you see here, the shaft of dark rain moves across the horizon rapidly between the first and second image. I use the graphite stick as a tool for simplifying swaths of tone, and tracing the movement of light and space I am experiencing with responsive real-time movements of my hand. Each page a fleeting moment caught in the wind. Sometimes a rain drop marks the page. The composition spins in a cyclical way against geometric straight edges. I chose to draw the sky in earth tones because I like the idea of approaching the sky in an unexpected way. I like holding opposites in my mind simultaneously. So I wanted to paint the air within the earth and the earth in the air. To search for an accord between the earth and the sky. repost • @claireannabaker “Hot Sighs,” 2022, Pigment, wax, and oil on canvas on panel, 80 x 42 inches Between the smooth surface and the oil stick are wide strokes of thin wax medium that become a solid negative shape, catching the light on the lines of the brushstroke, and serving as a texture for the oil stick to pick up. The oil stick essentially makes a rubbing of the surface in a frottage like way, so any variation on the surface becomes part of the mark. Vertical scroll-like compositions have been a thread in my work for many years. The sound and feeling of the wind and electricity, the vision of rain cutting across the landscape, the dark clouds concealing the horizon interrupted by flashes of light, the smell of the air, and the uncertainty of the outcome—all become part of the visual language. In the studio, Baker begins the process of translating these drawings into paintings. Unusually large brushes and oversize oil sticks are custom fabricated in order to swiftly carve space with broad, precise, and active strokes. Muddy greens, slate grays, volcanic slag, crushed porphyry, along with the umbers, ochers, and siennas, speed and clash across the surfaces. Pigments mined directly from the earth reflect how a storm binds sky to land. The marks gain the quiddity of the natural forces with each repetition. Atmospheric shimmer is built through layers of translucent pigment and wax washes, and line drawing and tone interact to inhabit, activate, and define the space of the paintings. Claire Anna Baker, Darkening Rays, 2022, Pigment, wax, and oil on canvas on panel, 50h x 87.5w inches “This work responds to the moment of nightfall behind a mountain range when forms slip between visibility and invisibility, the shades of darknesses subsuming everything into a vast field of shimmering shadowed space that is simultaneously near and far, intimate and infinite. At the peak of the storm there is a similar such unifying darkness in the cool black shade of the clouds. The light here propelled from a deep point on the horizon to a broad, aerial, approaching plane of air overhead. The soft glow within the darkening sky fanned and leapt toward me with a momentum that engulfed me and all of my surroundings in its veil, creating a vast boomerang between close and far, depth and depthlessness. The title of the show, “Undone,” responds to a force that creates change, both spatial and material, embodied and emotional. The driving thrust here is the sky pushing, pulling, bursting, breaking, collapsing, and falling into the earth. The title for each painting responds to this condition, and to the physical and temporal aspects of being caught in the stormy space binding sky to earth. To reflect this intermingled sky and earth, the colors are made from pigments mined directly from the earth.
