Fun fact: clairen can actually jump the same number of times as wrastor, the character whose whole gimmick is that he has multiple jumps.

This is due to the fact that she has two specials that refresh her double jump in mid air - if she lands a grab, her double jump will be refilled, and if she lands a counter a counter her double jump will be refilled. She can’t chain grabs or counters to get infinite jumps, but she can counter and then grab or grab and then counter to get two double jump refills. This means that she has 4 total jumps, the same number as wrastor.

Jump refills are really cool!!! They let you do nutty combos, and if someone tries to break your combo YOU CAN KEEP THE COMBO GOING MWAHAHAHA

I love clairen, she’s so much fun

If any other character can jump refill let me know, I think it’s an incredibly cool tech but so far I only know that clairen can do it

The only tech I learnt from other people is wavedashing and her true combos (down tilt into itself, down air into down smash), everything else is home grown Randy-certified tech

If the Fated Acolyte and Quincy T. Page are any indication, it's no surprise that I love creating self-inserts that are designed as faithfully to their source material/time period as I can manage! And after discovering two games that would ultimately shape this blog into what it is today— Rivals/Lovers of Aether respectively— it only took a couple of days before I decided to design a self-insert for the Aether franchise.

And I did! ... sort of.

Because designing a Rivals/Lovers of Aether self-insert would involve choosing an animal to base myself on as well as drawing him anthropomorphically as well as taking what I would come up with for his Rivals design and make a Lovers-accurate design based on it... the prospect of a Rivals/Lovers S/I was easier said than done.

However, I did have a general idea of what I wanted his character to be like for both iterations, and before long introduced Psycha, the Clairvoyant Enigma, to my blog in this post right here! It was after I uploaded this post that I began scouring the internet for inspiration on how to design an anthropomorphic sheep character, and while I did ultimately begin a sketch of Psycha's Rivals counterpart...

Longtime followers know which counterpart came first.

And as of today, February third...

It's been a full year since the creation of Psycha's Lovers of Aether design!

Personally, of all of the OCs and self-inserts that I've shown off on this blog, I think Psycha may very well be my ultimate favorite. While I make sure to design all of my self-inserts to have an aspect that I have— whether that means their personality or what they look like— I find that Psycha is the absolute closest to who I am as a person (Barring the fact that he's a 4'10" sheep, of course).

So, some time after I began speaking of him more and more in various posts on this blog, I knew that I wanted to draw him again for the one year anniversary of the design of his Lovers of Aether iteration. I initially intended on drawing up a completed art piece of his Rivals of Aether iteration, which is pretty much finalized by now, though...

I think it's safe to say that Psycha's Lovers design is the definitive Psycha.

Some might notice two interesting details in this drawing of Psycha; firstly, he's not wearing his usual blue plaid flannel. I realized when going into drawing him again that I had only drawn Psycha without it once, and that sketch didn't even end up being posted. I figured I ought to draw him in just the t-shirt he wears underneath it for a change— it's also the first time you get to see his full 'Supaboy' shirt design, which is modeled after the Super Famicom logo!

Secondly, proudly pinned to his chest is a heart-shaped bi flag pin. I decided to include this because, in all honesty, I didn't start embracing the fact that I was bisexual until a little after I designed Psycha, which was when I knew for certain that I swung both ways in terms of gender attraction.

It's kind of an unwritten rule at this point that all of my self-inserts are bisexual, though the most bi S/I of them all is for certain Psycha. Even in spite of his sheepishness, I feel as though he would be proud to show off who he is with such a pin, and it fits his design a lot better than I expected it to. Perhaps I'll make it a permanent addition!

I'm really proud of this drawing of Psycha, seeing as in some ways it's a fully realized version of this sketch, and I hope that you've enjoyed reading about the process of this art piece of Clairen's very canon love interest!

(As a side note... hey, Dan Fornace and @elranno, since it was decided to add the four new workshop rivals to the Rivals lineup... can we make Psycha canon to the Lovers universe for real? 👀)

To offer you a topic regarding that meta post you reblogged, I've always wondered what your characterization of Zetterburn thinks of some of the other Rivals, like Orcane or Wrastor, since I've come to appreciate the hardy, no-nonsense personality you write him with. Are any of the Rivals a bitter enemy to him?

I’m a pretty simple guy when it comes to my RoA headcanons for Zetterburn’s relationship with the other Rivals, In my opinion and for the sake of this blog he generally has a good relationship with all of them except Orcane, who he actively dislikes. 

What can he say? Fire & Water don’t mix, and the fact that Orcane is completely unintelligible doesn’t help (he’s canonically like a feral dog). Zetterburn finds his presence annoying and generally just doesn’t want to hang around him. He’d do anything to avoid spending time with the stupid Orca-dog, lol. 

Everyone else in the cast he’s cool with, they all have a common goal, to protect and defend Aether at all costs from the Abyss. (except Sylvanos, possibly the only other Rival he dislikes but that’s because Sylvanos’s goals are self-interested. I kinda see Sylvanos as the RoA equivalent of Poison Ivy from Batman. Sylvanos doesn’t care about people, Sylvanos cares about plants, Sylvanos couldn’t give two shits if everyone on Aether died as long as the plant-life was ok and took back the planet. Sylvanos actively wants his elemental nation to rule all of Aether. Naturally, Zetterburn dislikes him for this).

He especially has a good relationship with Forsburn & Clairen, #FireGangSticksTogether. Forsburn is literally his brother and it goes without saying Zetterburn will protect his family with his life at all costs. No one will dare lay a finger on his brother unless they want Zetterburn to burn them to the ground where they stand. 

and Clairen? Clairen’s a special case. 

They clearly have the same goal, the continious survival and prosper of the Fire Capital. They’ll both do whatever it takes. He greatly admires Clairen’s strength and her guts for someone so young, and though he’d never admit it, since the day she first traveled back to present-day Aether, Zetterburn has almost seen her as a daughter-figure. He can’t imagine how painful it must have been living in a doomed future under the cruelty of Emperor Loxodont and if anyone wants to avoid a future like that for the Fire Capital just as much as her, It’s Zetterburn.

Rook's Poker Night at the Inventory conversations Part 1

Badgerclops: Hey Clairen, you kinda remind me of Mao Mao if he was cooler. Don't tell him I said that. Clairen: Oh really? What's Mao Mao like? Badgerclops: Well first off, his full name is Mao Mao Mao, and- Kani: Seriously? And I thought having 4/5 of my team having the same surname Maki was crazy... Badgerclops: I think that's even crazier, actually. Anways, back to what I was saying. Clairen, you have a sword, you're a cat, and you're fighting evil. Except you're a lot cooler, and I don't care if I'm hurting Mao Mao's feelings by saying this. Clairen: Interesting...

Kani: Hey, Peppino? Peppino: What-a is it? Kani: You've dealt with sentient food, so can you tell me some of your stories? Peppino: I'm-a not-a sure about-a that one, crab lady. I guess-a there's this Cheeseslime named The Vigilante, and he's-a probably one of the only big-a threats I faced that I don't-a have beef with... Kani: Yeah, and you can get real angry like me... Except you're even more dangerous... Running through all those Cheeseslimes like crazy...

Badgerclops: Yo crab gal, do you ever realize that being the smallest one at the table, or ON the table, gives you a lot of disadvantages playing poker? Kani: Yeah, but I don't let that bother me. I'm a crab, I'm not gonna complain that it's hard to do something just because I'm small. Badgerclops: That's some dedication right there.

Peppino: YEEEOOOOWWWW!! Kani: What the?! Clairen: What's wrong, Peppino? Peppino: Nothing... I'm-a just reminded of... THE WAR. Kani: The war? Badgerclops: Oh boy... Peppino: Every few-a minutes, I'm-a reminded of the dark-a times of my life... where I served in the war... It-a brings me neverending pain... And the memories won't stop... Kani: That is some bleeped-up bleep, Peppino. Clairen: That's almost as bad as the dark future I come from... Peppino: NO, DON'T-A REMIND ME AGAIN!

Peppino: So, uh... How-a did you guys find-a the inventory? Kani: Tako found a poster for it while we were fighting the Legion of Low Tide. He decided that we go there on a Saturday night, but he was kicked out due to the mess he made with his ink. Clairen: Ayala mentioned it, so I was curious. Was it some kind of hideout for heroes, or was it Loxodont's secret lair? As it turns out, it's just a place to play poker and get drinks and snacks. Badgerclops: We just kinda stumbled upon it, and Adorabat got all excited when she saw it, and went, "Oooh, looks like a fantastically fun place!" and I was like, "Adorabat, you're not old enough to be in here! Aren't you five?" and then she was like, "Yeah, you've got a point." And then Mao Mao was like, "What's the point of this location?" and then I was like, "To have fun!" And then- Kani: Okay, this is gonna go on for a long time and make me crabby, so how about you cut it there. Badgerclops: Okay, fine. Jeez.

Badgerclops: So, uh... Peppino, do you think I could stop by your pizza place to get some pizza? Peppino: A-yeeesss! That would be-a fantastic! Clairen: Okay, but are your pizzas up to health code? Peppino: Uhhhhhh... Badgerclops: I couldn't care either way, pizza is pizza.

Badgerclops: Hey, crab gal. Why are your pincers on your head? Kani: Don't give me weird questions about my anatomy! Badgerclops: I'm sorry, that's just not... anatomically correct! That just makes you more of a cat... crab... Kani: Well, I do have the claws for it.

Peppino: Okie dokie, Clairen. You're the element of-a fire, and you wield a fire sword? Clairen: Yep. Peppino: Ain't plasma and fire the same-a thing? Kani: Not really. All fire is plasma, but not all plasma is fire. Like, a lightning bolt isn't fire, but it's still plasma. Badgerclops: Heh, so that just makes classifying plasma as fire even more dumb. Kani: Well, I wouldn't go that far. Clairen: Well, if you really want to see how my world works, then you just come to Aether yourselves.

Badgerclops: Seeing all these aces reminds me of my hyperfocus machine that makes edible playing cards. Kani: Wait, what? Badgerclops: I don't remember making it, but it exists! Do YOU have a hyperfocus mode, crab gal? Kani: If by a hyperfocus mode, you mean, "going crazy creating stuff and then forgetting the next day", kind of. Sometimes I have random bouts of creativity, so I create something like a paper shredder on wheels with a knife taped to it, and the others just get confused as to why I made them, and I do remember making them, I just don't remember WHY. Peppino: Did the knife paper shredder have-a sentience? Kani: I wouldn't call it sentience, more like... a drive of chaos. Clairen: You two make some... really crazy stuff.

Kani: Hey, Badgerclops? Badgerclops: Yeah? Kani: Why do you call me crab gal? You know my name. You know it's Kani. Badgerclops: I dunno, that's just the name I default to. Don't you ever have one of those moments? Kani: Ikura certainly has those moments. Badgerclops: Are you and your friends literally just... sentient sea creatures? Kani: Not all of them, Wasabi's a mound of spicy mustard. Peppino: Hit-a that shit with a net. Kani: ...What???

Here is a batch of icons I made using select panels from the recently released Tales of Aether! I really like the way that I edited these in!

Initially, this started as an icon change for tumblr, and you can (Hopefully) see my new icon is Clairen and younger Clairen from the front cover with a nice color grading and faded outline. I liked this style of icon and, seeing how much I adore Tales of Aether’s artstyle, I figured I’d make a few more starring some notable characters!

Perhaps when I think of it, I can make some art of younger Clairen seeing how downright adorable she is in the last icon of the set (And all throughout Tales). Just seeing her also really makes me want to design a younger Psycha, and not a younger Lovers of Aether Psycha; I’m talking a younger Rivals of Aether Psycha as I’ve got his Rivals design just about finalized! 

That said, I hope you like these icons!

It was really cool getting to see the base roster of RoA stylized! #I really wanted to make icons for Clairessa (Clairen's mom) and Dohren (Clairen's dad) but there weren't really any good stills to use #Pretty much 95% of Dohren's appearances portray him on edge. And for good reason. Still can't get over the one panel where he's all smug #Also the fact that Clairen has two younger twins! Clairen's got a whole family! I remember getting to that panel and thinking 'TWINS???' #Sure they and Dohren were on the cover but they could have been ANYBODY #And Claiyen (Clairen's ancestor) is so cool. I LOVE the glow-up she got in Tales and she looks so much better than she did in Rivals #I've half wanted to consider her a parental F/O (Her or Clairessa) but I'm unsure. #Since Clairen is my romantic F/O... that'd require some serious rule bending.
