Crippins is in total contrast to angel incarnate Mr. Tobias Butler, but I am hesitant to call him a devil from hell. Yes, he is a murderer, but that’s driven by his desire to protect his illegitimate son. It doesn’t justify the action, of course, but a tiny part of me pities him. The young Crippins must have some fine qualities for his mistress to fall in love with, but years of trying to hide the secret and seeing how the fortunate he believes his son is entitled to is being frittered away turns him into a bitter and vengeful old man.
I got some butter pecan, Puerto Ricans from the Boogie Down
That’s waitin’ on me to return,
So they can snatch these braids out and put my shit in a perm.
They love it when I get to Crippin’,
And spittin’ this mag-ah-nificent pimpin’.

Popsugar reading challenge: A book with a one-world title you had to look up in a dictionary
Vulcana- by Rebecca F. John
I know Vulcan, but I've never heard of Vulcana. So this is why this book is under this prompt.
Vulcana's life is a fascinating one and the book also gives an insight to the backstage of the troop. By being such a strong person in the physical sense, she is clearly someone that is not confirming to the standard of her time, and there are a few issues of her coming to term with this.
Another very interesting aspect of the story is her relationship with Williams, her partner in all but legal terms, and his wife. I feel that this is shown in a really realistic and heart-warming way. Both of the two women have an understanding towards both themselves and the other. The story also mentions her involvement in trying to get the police to investigate the murder of Cora Crippins, which I actually heard on a podcast a while ago, although I did not know of her involvement.
My only complaint is that the author does show time jump without really explaining what happened. All of a sudden, we are reading about what happened quite a few years later and it is almost as if you are reading a diary entry and the middle just get taken out.
