Abba Ammonas was asked, “What is the ‘narrow and hard way’?” (Matthew 7.14) He replied, “The ‘narrow and hard way’ is this, to control your thoughts, and to strip yourself of your own will, for the sake of God. This is also the meaning of the sentence, ‘Lo, we have left everything and followed you’.” (Matthew 19.27)

Planted my dwarf crested iris
Tumblr media
Amongst a crossvine and some native lyreleaf sage (I think) that's gone to seed
Thought you'd like to see some other little native "weeds"
Tumblr media
this is a Carolina geranium, a little less showy than the "wild" geranium, but it still has the cute little "cranesbill" seedpods they're named for
Tumblr media
This is vetch, both of these are great for your dirt and nice nibbles for critters
Tumblr media
This is a false wild strawberry-technically edible but not tasty- it's a non-native but the pollinators still like the flowers so i don't usually yank it out
Tumblr media
Volunteer pumpkin to round things out, it has more of the Carolina geranium poking up through

my garden looks like a total mess conventionally speaking. but letting all kinds of plants that normally would have been weeded out grow freely means all kinds of cool natives have popped up. goldenrod, slender vetch, ticktrefoil, and plenty of others that my app can't identify for me yet lol. plus the natives i DID plant intentionally last year seem to mostly have all survived and most are doing really well (my instinct is to thin out/transplant some of the ones that are crowding each other but i'm trying to hold off)
and my hibiscus are all doing well now that i'm fertilizing again. (resisting the temptation to buy some more fancy varieties) (i have more plants than i can care for i don't need more) (i desperately want black or blue or brown hibiscus tho) (maybe a reward for the end of semester) my roses are not the best, i can never seem to get rid of the black spot but they still look pretty and smell nice. i'm trying my best to treat them but there's only so much effort i'm willing to put into for purely ornamental flowers (that aren't my beloved hibiscus) and i'm terrible at pruning so they're kind of monstrous to look at lmao
paying attention to my little slice of nature is so rewarding. i'm seeing so many bugs i've never seen before. i'm excited to add all the plants i got at the native plant society sale (i finally got a leatherflower as well as a crossvine!! sadly no passionflower). i can't wait for more of the flowering plants to start blooming and the grasses especially to fill out :3

MEDICINE GUIDE;
Within the Western Territories, herbs are few and far between, apart from those residing in BoneClan territory. This is a simple guide explaining the most basic of medication.
POISONS;
BULLNETTLE - easy-clinging nettle that causes incredible burning and irritation to the skin. Really only found amongst RayClan, in which those who walk throughout this territory have to check their pelt for remains of the plant every once in a while. Thick green stalks with white hairs and pale flowers.
POKEWEED - an incredibly swift growing poison found within the outskirts of HoofClan territory. Droopy bush leaves with red stalks and black berries.
BOTTLEBRUSH - a plant found flowering within BoneClan and HoofClan during Greenleaf. Bright green, thin and pointy leaves, with scarlet hair-like flowers.
OLEANDER - found closer to Twoleg settlings, oleander is a pink and red flower with light green stalks. Not often found by the clans, but a risk nontheless.
NUMBING AGENTS;
CROSSVINE - within BoneClan territory. Applied via grinding flowers and gently spreading the paste onto the affected area. Red and yellow bell shaped flowers with grey-brown vines.
LANCELEAF - very easy to grow, and so, most healers have their own stash outside their den. Applied the same way as crossvine, grind into a paste and smooth onto the affected area. Dark purple stalks with brighter purple flowerings.
DISINFECTANTS;
SEA OAT - grows within RayClan. Applied via taking the leaves and smoothing onto the wound. Wrap with cobweb to keep in place. Dark brown stalks with lighter, tan, drooping leaves.
MILKWEED - amongst BoneClan territory but also found scarce within HoofClan. Applied by grinding into paste and smoothing onto wound. Green stalks with small, cauliflower-like pink flowers.
BUTTERFLY WEED - while the flowers are toxic, the leaves are perfect for disinfectant and binding. Application is simple, place atop wound to both disinfect and/or hold other medicines in place. Bright green stalks and leaves with small, scarlet flowers.
While this guide is accurate, it is the basics! When injured or sick, remember to always visit your local healer. Use this guide to do what you can when urgent. Stay safe out there, catpokes!

Spring has sprung!
Spring has been a rollercoaster here in Texas. We had a week of 30/40 high temps and then it warmed up a bit...just a bit...and then it skyrocketed to 93 degrees on the first Monday of April - for just one day. Now the temps have leveled out.
One of the things I look forward to every spring is the blooming of my crossvines - I have two. To be specific, they are tangerine orange crossvines. The crossvine has always been mine barometer for planting outside. I don't put a single plant in the ground until these girls are in full bloom. They always bloom in March - sometimes the first week and sometimes the last week.
The blooms last 2-3 weeks depending on weather. They will rebloom again later this year - if it's a super hot summer, they will bloom one more time and if it's a mild, cooler summer, I will get 3 total blooms from them.
They are a native to Texas. I didn't know that at the time of purchasing and planting them. Hell, I didn't know what a native plant was until 3 years ago - at the earliest and I didn't get immersed in native plant habitat until a year ago. I'm lucky to have these beauties in my yard - they always bring in the 3 B's of pollinators (butterflies, bees, birds).
Even when not in bloom, they provide habitat for wildlife. Lizards, birds, and the dreaded rat. I've had wrens nesting in it, and lizards/rats that hide in it. Mockingbirds and cardinals take twigs to build their nests.
The first picture is of one that I've had for 12 years - it was my very first plant to put in my garden. Based on the height of my fence and the fact that this is actually the backside - this one is 16-20 feet long. The second picture is of a crossvine that I've had for about 5 years and she's no longer than 8 feet - she doesn't get quite as much sun as the first one, thus she is growing a little bit slower. They definitely love their sun.
Here's to native plants.
