isn't it divine when music creates a soundscape as identical, accurate to one without headphones.

cykada blends the two. you don't have to be in the inner city to soothe senses together, just on a bus.

by 'so divided', i am transported to the halal butchers or dalston supermarket, the music is territorial or arguing as such.

this is not because of vocality, rather the way instruments create their own voice, together, giving space and permission for vocalist to express.

the tone, for what you'd call progressive jazz is symbiotic-

symbiotic indicates (denoting) a mutually beneficial relationship between different people or groups.

Levitation Orchestra - Illusions & Realities - large UK ensemble fuses (but is not limited to) spiritual jazz & prog rock on their new LP from Gearbox Records

Founded in 2018 by trumpet player & musical director Axel Kaner-Lidstrom, Levitation Orchestra was formed with the shared goal to create original suites of music completely collectively. An 11 piece ensemble abundant in energy & focus, their captivating compositions come to life in the band's explosive live performances.                                             

Levitation Orchestra presents one of the most adventurous albums to bless our ears in 2021, bringing together multiple inspirations ranging across spiritual jazz, classical, electronica, soul, spoken word, M-Base, and no-holds-barred free improvisation. With trumpeter Axel Kaner-Lidstrom (Cykada, Gary Bartz) as musical director, the collective comprises some of London's most promising young musicians, who together play in or with the likes of Alabaster de Plume, Shunaji, Nihilism, PÆN, and Nardedey. Lluis Domenech Plana on flute, James Akers on tenor saxophone, and Ayodeji Ijishakin on tenor saxophone complete the horn section, with Saskia Horton on violin, Beatriz Rola on violin, and Emma Barnaby on cello making up the strings. Rhythm is available in handfuls from Hamish Nockles-Moore on double bass and Harry Ling on drums, Maria Osuchowska on harp, and Paris Charles on guitar, with last but not least, Plumm and Dilara Aydin-Corbett on vocals. As a true collective, each member is vital, contributing equally to the whole in terms of playing and writing. Compositions formed out of group discussions, which in the case of Illusions & Realities, delved into childhood, stoicism, astrophysical theories, and neurological delusions, all interweaving and circling the point where truth and reality enter the realm of illusion. The result is a record which manages to channels the energy of Sun Ra's Arkestra, the spiritual ambience of Alice Coltrane, and the harmonic subtleties of Debussy, whilst ultimately producing something tantalisingly original. "Many In Body, One In Mind" - so reads the the final track title from Levitation Orchestra's forthcoming record Illusions & Realities. It's a statement that embodies both the album and the prime philosophy behind London's foremost powerhouse collective. The album is set for global release on October 29th via Gearbox Records. The album will be available on double vinyl LP with gatefold sleeve, CD with gatefold sleeve, and digital. Limited quantities of Japanese Edition vinyl LP and Japanese Edition CD will also be available to pre-order.

In the last few years London has become the centre of the Jazz Renaissance. A new burst of energy and attitude brought by young musicians, equally inspired by the likes of John Coltrane, Pharaoh Sanders or Sun Ra, as well as Madvillain, J Dilla, Flying Lotus and Floating Points, has brought a welcomed freshness to the London Scene. This exciting new environment brought a group of young musicians together, all with a mutual desire to discover a new form of expression. Together they created Cykada.

Album of the Day: Gary Bartz & Maisha - Night Dreamer Direct​-​To​-​Disc Sessions (Night Dreamer Records). 

The third release from Night Dreamer’s essential “Direct-to-Disc” sessions sees an incredible meeting between legendary US saxophonist Gary Bartz and UK jazz ensemble, Maisha, featuring two Bartz classics and three brand new joint songs written by both Bartz & Maisha in close collaboration. 

Maisha’s explosive sound appears to be particularly influenced by the 70s oeuvre of legendary figures such as Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane and of course, Gary Bartz. Which makes this collaboration even more special. Bartz was first invited to share a stage with Maisha by Gilles Peterson to headline the inaugural We Out Here festival. The resulting musical chemistry was so successful that a European tour followed, and subsequently Maisha and Bartz headed to Artone Studios to record a special direct-to-disc recording for Night Dreamer Records. 

Whilst Bartz and Maisha reinvent classic Bartz compositions “Uhuru Sasa” and “Dr Follows Dance”, extending the pieces into long piece improvised grooves, their recording session gave birth to three brand new joint compositions, written the very same day. These include the propulsive “Leta’s Dance” that magically combines the Bartz’ soulful musical lyricism with Maisha’s African-jazz influences, and the organic jazz funk of “Harlem to Haarlem”, featuring a hot solo from guest trumpeter Axel Kaner-Lidstrom (Cykada, Levitation Orchestra).

A meeting of talents, minds & generations, captured in a unique and pure manner.  Maisha reach new heights whilst we find Bartz reinvigorated, and both artists in tune to the spirit of the other. (Selected by Oli Brunetti)
