hello all you beautiful people!
a little unknown fact about me: i love reading! i mainly read reference material and nonfiction, but i don't mind the occasional fiction! i have plenty of friends on here who like reading (after all, you're on my page!) and who love elvis, so i figured i'd make a compendium of books that were adapted into elvis' movies.
it will be organized by the movie / the year it came out, and the story / its author. i'll also include a little description of each.
-love me tender (1956) & the story of the reno gang: this movie was not based on a story, but actual historical events! the reno gang were a group of brothers who went around the midwest robbing trains. clinton reno was a real person, the youngest of the five brothers (his nickname was "honest", as he never got involved with any criminal activity pertaining to his brothers.)
-loving you (1957) & a call from mitch miller by mary agnes thompson: the movie was based on a short story by mary agnes thompson that was featured in the june 1956 edition of good housekeeping.
-king creole (1958) & a stone for danny fisher by harold robbins: king creole was the first of el's movies to be based on an entire book! the role was originally meant for james dean, and was set in the backstreets of new york city.
-flaming star (1960) & flaming lance by clair huffaker: this was one of two movies where the original author was involved in creating the screenplay.
-wild in the country (1961) & the lost country by j.r. salamanca: although some creative liberties were taken (el's character went from an artist to a writer and hope lange's character became a psychiatrist rather than a teacher), it still followed the same plot as the original novel. it was also the first to feature elvis on a published paperback.
-follow that dream (1962) & pioneer, go home! by richard p. powell: the novel is based on a family from new jersey (WOOT WOOT), and although technically based on the book, the movie takes many creative liberties to the point of it being almost completely opposite the original source material.
-stay away, joe (1968) & stay away, joe by dan cushman: this is what el considered his first "serious" role. although involving some incredibly racist stereotypes, it is rooted in some truth about elvis' lineage: his great-great-great grandmother was a cherokee woman named morning white dove, and some attribute his high cheekbones and striking features to his distant native ancestry.
-live a little, love a little (1968) & kiss my firm but pliant lips by dan greenburg: the movie, like follow that dream, was so loosely based on the book that it was almost completely opposite the original source material.
-charro! (1969) & charro! by harry whittington: this is the only "officially endorsed" book based on an elvis movie.
-the trouble with girls (1969) & chautauqua by day keene: this is my absolute favorite movie of all time, and ironically, there is no information about the book's plot. based on what i've gathered from other sources, it follows an almost identical plot to the movie. unfortunately, the author died 9 months prior to the movie's release.
-change of habit (1969) & title-not-available by richard morris and john joseph: according to wikipedia, change of habit was based on a story written by richard morris and john joseph. i've scoured the internet under both of those names, and found nothing! oh well.
i hope you all had as much fun reading this as i did writing this, and be sure to shoot me a message if you read any of these!
(...or if you find a reasonably priced copy of chautauqua.)
-all my love, calla xx @kiankiwi @arianatheangel-girl @mooodyblue

My Life In Movies: The Guardian 1990 6.5/10
So I said a few months ago that I was going to undertake the arduous task of watching every movie released since my birth*, and this will be the first installment of my recording my thoughts about each film.
So, right out the gate the first movie is Universal Pictures' Horror/Drama The Guardian, Directed by William Friedkin, Produced by Joe Wizan, and Written by Stephen Volk, Dan Greenburg, and William Friedkin.
It stars Carey Lowell, Dwier Brown, and Jenny Seagrove. It grossed $16.1M and has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 25% (Audience Score of 32%).
I don't have high hopes that I'm going to like this, Horror is not my genre and while the synopsis makes it sound like a solid concept I don't trust it's going to translate.
Oh boy was this movie interesting. As a reminder this movie can out in early 1990, so special effects, were limited to what could be done practically. There are a few quick cuts that are laughable by today's standards, but for the era it was made it's pretty solid.
Overall I think it was an acceptable film, I would say there's not much (to me) that translates as 'horror'. There are two 'chase' scenes, and the final fifteen minutes of the movie that lean into the genre but don't fully commit to it. It was a much more enjoyable watch than I was expecting. I will say I spent the entire movie waiting for the moment where I was supposed to see the villain as the villain, and it never quite got there, which may be more indicative of my feeling about having children and how I'd actually probably be okay with it if a hot British druid showed up and took my baby away to sacrifice them to a tree, than the actually writing.
True to concept: 4/5 - It stayed true to the overall concept, without any weird twists coming out of left field.
Enjoyability: 4/5 - It was fun, very kitsch, it's not a movie everyone is going to enjoy but I had fun with it.
Rewatchability: 2/5 - I'm not going to go out of my way to rewatch it and unless someone else actively did want to watch it I'd probably skip it.
Cinematography: 3/5 - There's some weird cuts, and some interesting decisions made for how some scenes were filmed (there are at least two scenes from an infants POV shot with a fish bowl lens).
Overall: 6.5/10

ANGRY CAT SOUNDS
What are some angry cat sounds, and what do they mean in cat language? However, ought we tend to, as cat folks react to those angry cat sounds?
Cats are dangerous companions for writers because cat-watching is a near-perfect method of writing avoidance.
-Dan Greenburg
The other day I used to be creating breakfast after I detected a well-known sound coming back from the front room — a low-pitched grumble, not in contrast to the sound a monster makes in a very horror flick. The sound quickly escalated to a yowl, followed by claws scraping on the wood floor. I had not, in fact, accidentally raised an ancient associate ghoul — it absolutely was simply my young cat, Salvypoo, "playing" with my cranky previous calico, Phoenix; World Health Organization was utilizing some angry cat sounds to specify her vexation along with her active relation.
While not as pleasant as a delicate purr or associate inquisitive meow, associated cat sounds are clear and necessary means your kitty communicates. Recognizing once your cat is associated and being responsive to why it happens can assist you in grasping once she wants time to decompress — and should forestall you from an accidental scratch or cat bite injury.
Angry Cat Sounds - Growling Means Back Of
No matter how much cats fight, there always seem to be plenty of kittens.
-Abraham Lincoln
Growling is usually the primary sounding clue that your cat is angry. Once Phoenix gets mad, she initially communicates with visual communication — ears down, eyes wide, tail flailing from facet to facet. Then comes the growl, beginning as a low-pitched grumble like angry oleomargarine Simpson and quickly building to a yowl if, no matter what is ticking her off, she doesn't back the euphemism off.
For many cats, growling is a warning noise that stems from annoyance, anger, aggression, or concern. If your cat is growling, it's in all probability informed to take a breather before attempting to pet her or choose her up to calm her down.
Angry Cat Sounds - Growls Are Typically In The Course Of Angry Meows
Growling typically occurs during associate angry meow, which looks like a daily meow stuffed with gravel and steroids. The angry meow may be used as a sort of exclamation mark, punctuating the growl as if to mention, "And I mean it." once the meow becomes high-pitched and multisyllabic, that indicates the cat is very stressed.
Angry Cat Sounds - Hissing Means Back Off, For Real
Cats are intended to teach us that not everything in nature has a function.
-Garrison Keillor
Cats will hiss for legion reasons; however, if your cat is hissing as a result of her being angry, it's just about the equivalent of you spewing a stream of curse words at the jerk World Health Organization simply cut you off in rush-hour traffic — that's, your kitty is creating this sound as a result of she's darn mad, or a lot of probably some combination of confused pissed off and afraid. Hissing could be a cat's instinctual response to one thing he perceives as a threat that may be as daunting as a shot-wielding doctor or as mundane as another pet scooting too on the point of him on the couch.
In any case, hissing is among the angry cat sounds that warn. Basically, it's the feline equivalent of a finger, which means this angry cat is prepared to fight. Once Phoenix hisses, a swipe of her paw with claws will follow. Don't approach a hissing cat. Instead, it's best to offer him some house until he calms down and feels safe.
Angry Cat Visual Communication
In addition to angry cat looks like hisses, growls, and angry meows, you'll be able to tell your cat is mad by listening to her visual communication. I'll use Phoenix as an associate example. Once calm, she's the sweetest kitty in the world — terribly light, inquisitive, and loving. I even have a nine-month-old son, and he or she can let him a pet and squeeze her with no hint of annoyance. Throughout these interactions, her ears are upright, her eyes are squinted in a very "smile," and her tail is either raised or flicking nonchalantly from facet to facet. If she vocalizes, it's probably associated with insistent meow mendicancy for many chin scratchies.
When Salvypoo playfully attacks her, Phoenix's visual communication entirely changes. Her ears flatten against her head, her pupils dilate, her shoulders hunch and her tail twitches violently – or puffs up if she's particularly angry or afraid. She additionally reacts in this fashion to the household appliance.
How Must You Reply To Angry Cat Sounds?
When managing an angry associate cat, it's perpetually higher to be safe than sorry. once vulnerable, cats are running on vasoconstrictor and instinct, which implies anyone — even a secure, acquainted cat parent — is probably going to induce separation if they approach. Your best move is solely to steer away. If potential, leave the space — or enable the cat to go away from the space and retreat somewhere quiet, far from no matter what she perceives to be the threat.
Never penalize a cat for being angry. Instead, provide your kitty a while to chill down, and rather than approaching your cat, stay up for her to return to you. Before you recognize it, she'll be coiled, purring in your lap, creating abundant friendlier sounds.

From Detention Cells at Halifax, See Hundreds Aboard Liners

APPEALS ARE FILED
----
Accused Men Likely To Be Held Some Time, Before Expulsion
---
Halifax, May 11. - A telegram authorizing Lionel Ryan, Halifax barrister, to act for other members of the group of alleged Communists held here for deportation was received by him yesterday from E. Greenburg, a Winnipeg lawyer, it was learned to-day.
The Swedish American liner Drottningholm has come and gone, bound for Gotenberg, Sweden, and the nine alleged Communists are still here. Officials refused to say whether any of the men had been placed aboard the liner, but a careful survey of the outgoing passengers revealed that only two deportees were being returned to England as public charges.
Imprisoned in the immigration shed, nine alleged alien Communists saw hundreds of their countrymen today, but they were not permitted to exchange greetings.
They are quartered about the centre of the pier, at which two great liners, the Kungsholm and Drottingholm, lay, and the passengers, out to enjoy the warmth of a brilliant spring day, lined the decks. Greetings, expressed in the Scandinavian languages and mixed tongues, were shouted toward the grated cells, but there was no response because the shouts did not reach the prisoners. Their windows had been closed, and some of the men had been removed to other cells not so near the ships.
As the Kungsholm slipped away from the pier and pointed out to sea one of the prisoners waved a frantic farewell and hundreds of shouts answered from the liner’s deck. Probably that ship was to have carried him back to his native land, a deportee from Canada. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, who guarded the cells night and day, refused to comment on the suggestion.
The appointment of Ryan, who is already acting for Steve Worebek, of Montreal, followed the revelation that possibly the majority of the nine men locked in the immigration sheds had not had the advantage of legal counsel at the hearing conducted by a board of inquiry here last week. Authorities refused to say whether the men had had an opportunity to retain counsel.
While Mr. Ryan would only admit that he had been retained to act for Dan Holmes of Winnipeg, he stated his instruction ‘might also include others of the group.’
In the meantime, both police officials and Communists’ sympathizers waited tensely for the decision of Hon. W. A. Gordon, minister of immigration.
The presence in the immigration buildings of a uniformed nurse today gave rise to the report that some of the men being held were sick. H. M. Grant, chief immigration inspector, who is responsible for the welfare of the prisoners, replied: ‘As far as I know, none of the men is sick.’
When a large number of persons are held, it is customary to retain such a nurse, it is understood.
As yet no writ of habeas corpus, the last resort of the incarcerated nine, has been filed, The Star ascertained. Mr. Ryan admitted he was considering taking such a course in the case of his new client.
