Return of the Thief Notes, Part One: The Book of Pheris, Volume I
Notes from my first read, October 2020. (Part Two | Part Three | TaT)
Contents:  "So, so, so” watch, Costis watch, swearing, trashing the king’s attendants, being objectively wrong, boundless enthusiasm and love
I promise I’ve had more developed thoughts since these often incoherent ones, but I’ve enjoyed having these notes to refer to - for sentimental reasons and for  entertainment, so here they are, for others who enjoy liveblogs and/or being whisked back in time to their first read of this wonderful book.
Format: Page number. My thoughts (Context?)
Dedication, Table of Contents, Exordium:
There it is – to Sounis
Exordium – vocab #1
Interregnum?!? Alyta?
Pheris!!!
Yeah I love him from the first page
MOIRA
MOCKING COMMENTS HELP! Gen lives!
A new level of unreliable narrator
Moira, messages of Gods, Pheris, messages of __
Wtf is going on in this study? A zoo?
high king vs great king vs annux?

Chapter 1
1. Susa – Costis
2. Infirmity – who gets to be hero/tell story (I started reading right after the book launch, in which mwt spent some time talking about her writing influences and decisions connect to this question - Pheris isn’t her first disabled protagonist and storyteller, of course, but it was lovely to meet him properly directly after hearing her talk about it. Book launch foreshadowing part 1...)
Melisande?
Is this why he wasn’t taught to read?
3. Always the summer
Bees!
4. Hunting cat… hm…
Ok … shrine … 😬
5. Once again we start with a disaster or having to flee

17. Ula – goddess of hearth and healing
Ok … Galen … or a god? Eugenides????? (why did these options occur to me before Mr. Shows Up At Your Bedside At Night himself)
18. Finally the attendant floor plans I crave + hunting scenes!
19. EXCUSE ME he slept through Sounis + Eddis wedding!!!

22. SO SO SO – ION!!!!!

Is it prophecy time?
Lol how long does this construction take?!
Also … she’s pregnant, huh? but no one knows (nope)
Is befriending someone weaponized as a prank count for Gen’s enemies to friends list?
Also SHOW ME the magus. I know he’s here!
36. Pheris excuse me, why not recreate this!
Lol cast off language of history indeed
Feel the thrum of the goddess!

41. I love them all so much
“on that horse, you will look like a king” I can’t with her sense of humor
He sure did say that

72. hmm are they WRANGLING?! (Galen and Petrus and my Fire and Hemlock word association)
Kill that pastry Irene I love you
morning training with his … guard? (Is that the whole guard or a guard? Costis senses tingling once again.)
73. Oh gen.
Ouch! (“to send people to their deaths and not risk my own is contemptible”)
Is she implying he’s paying Therespides?
74. Interesting Cleon plan. So many doubles
OUCH. (“Only if he comes back from the dead.” I assumed Lader had died in the war; it’s a different ouch now. I love that they both accidentally say things to each other that poke old wounds, and it’s not a big deal but it’s also not dismissed! Their relationship has come so far, and I love them so much.)
75. Verimius – Lavia – Celia??? Somebody is queer in there!
A GUARD
This scene confuses me. Xortix? Layteres? Aris! but dice thing is less political … so maybe? (just wait....)
76. So many reasons to hate Medander
Hey Costis! You exist! KoA happened!

156. pigeons. Inkpot!
157. yeah honestly. He tortures people. He was NOT tortured by the king
159. lol (“I have noted the elective nature of certain behaviors” ... I love Relius and Pheris.)
160. The Invitation! I <3 it
161. EXCUSE ME WHO
Legarus!
FOLKS HERE WE ARE (I cannot overstate how wonderful it was to read this page. I did not know who the poem was from, and “Someone loves me very much, even with all my faults” is even sweeter to reread, but it’s just ... his confidence is so different from the tentative consideration of a new philosophy of trust and love we see in KoA. And there is subtextual queerness in the books before this one, some more apparent and some more subtle (and what is obvious to one reader may be subtle or invisible to another, in these books especially), and there is the attendant love triangle a few chapters back, but HERE - here, Pheris acknowledges the real feeling and love in Legarus’s disastrous relationship and tells us directly that his lover was a man, here he seamlessly makes it clear how bi and poly Relius is, and he quietly ties these relationships and realities to his growing understanding of the world. It’s not subtext. And there’s a lot more to come, but this page really hit me, and sort of promised the “more to come” while assuring me that what had come before, more subtly, was there. I used to have heteronormative readings of both these books and myself, and when Thick as Thieves brought them crashing back into my heart after years away, I knew better about myself, and I saw that - or the possibility of that reading -  reflected in the new book, and it was such a good surprise. It meant a lot, and this page meant a lot, and that is why I’m writing a small essay to accompany this note.)
Lol wow
162. Where are you traveling, man (this question remains)
163. Fuck you, Orutus
164. Stole an inkpot!
165. the map!!! (Kamet’s)
166. I love them!
167. The Math Master hmm
Am I an oracle (Nope! :) )

Beastars, vol. 5 (english)
Tumblr media
This is the volume where we first meet the lion mafia, or Shishi-gumi, and one that most clearly shows the corrupted authorities of their world.
Chapter 35.
- The first thing we see of the mafia is their snake-skin shoes, which recalls images of real-life drug cartels. And in context it’s even more grotesque. Indeed, we soon see they do all sort of violations on corpses. Ghastly.
Tumblr media
- We also get confirmation: They were responsible for the black-out. It was indeed for kidnapping. And their target all along was Haru.
- The lion who tried to strip Haru will pay dearly for it, as this drew Legosi’s wrath. Same with the boss, whose name we never found out.
- Notice the boss’s hypocrisy: He says he doesn’t like unnecessary violence, then says he likes his preys scared because it gives them a better taste. He claims he won’t rape her, but forcing somebody to strip and then clinically examining their genitals is very much a violation as well.
- Then there is another layer of hypocrisy and corruption: The mayor. The politician who orders the entire business swept under the rug, who claims he will take care of this delicate matter of a teenage girl’s kidnapping and then immediately destroys the evidence, all to avoid tarnishing his image. For Legosi, this first-hand witnessing of unreliable authority figures will become a capital part of his world-view.
Chapter 36.
- Like so many politicians and public figures, the mayor has had all sort of plastic surgeries (the extras inform us how expensive they were) due to sheer vanity while claiming it was a carefully curated image. And just like them, the result is grotesque.
- Louis also sees corruption firsthand: He is ordered to forget the business, even if the kidnapped girl is a close friend of his.
- Now, the fight between Legosi and Louis serves to illustrate how they each take this reality they have been faced with: Louis, who has seen the worst of this world his entire life (sold for meat as a child, then adopted by a monster) stops caring, while Legosi refuses to accept such apathy.
- Notice that Legosi’s claim that Haru is his has a different meaning in context than it seems. It’s not a matter of being possessive, it’s a matter of motivating himself that since Louis has made it clear he won’t help, then at least Legosi will be able to talk to her with no limitations.
Chapter 37.
- Carnivores are also in danger at the Meat Market. Figures, as it’s a lawless place, or under the law of criminals —which is almost the same thing.
- Both Juno and Jack can sometimes deduce what is going on, but since they both get so little information, there isn’t much they can do to help Legosi… at least so far.
- Nothing could be more macabre than a lair’s entry decorated with hanged, naked corpses. Again, alluding to real-life drug cartels and other atrocities.
-  The lion’s lair seems to be built with pieces of other buildings. Was this the child-trafficking tower? If so, it truly is a damned place.
Chapter 38.
- Haru’s origin. Notice the story of a woman for whom sex is a way to realize herself and to reaffirm her place in the world, to shed off people’s pitying image of her.
- I’m very intrigued by Haru´s lovers. Seems she likes different body types. Good for her!
Tumblr media
- And it’s Haru’s reaffirmation of herself that gives her the strength to fight back. Not ‘pride and stubbornness’ as some fan put it (ahem), but remembering her worth.
Tumblr media
Chapter 39.
- Lions, or at least this lion, resent canines for being more accepted in society, mostly on grounds of being cuter. Well…
Chapter 40.
Chapter 41.
- Notice Jack’s interest in Kibi —very much like a dog.
Tumblr media
- How lovely is Miguno playing with Durham’s ears here?
Tumblr media
Chapter 42.
- Where Legosi and Gouhin’s rescue is almost out of an Action movie, Louis’ revenge is out of a thriller. He kills the mafia boss and then willingly calls for death —once again as a ‘fuck-you’ to this world that has shown him the worst of itself, just like when Louis was a child. But there is a different fate for him…
- Do notice that this is neither “the suicide of a douche” as one fan put it (ahem!), nor is it Louis being a hero. It is the culmination of a sordid tale of child abuse. From there, he will go from victim to villain.
- Gosha hasn’t even appeared yet and already he’s the best Grandpa / Parent here. Now this is good advice:
Tumblr media
Chapter 43.
- Gotta love Miguno comforting Jack here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Extra.
- As author Itagaki notes, Gouhin is up to here the only positive adult figure, quite above obvious monsters like the mafia or monsters with good publicity, like Oguma and the Mayor. There is a theme of unreliable authorities not to be trusted here.
- Once again, Bill and Legosi being almost a literal cat and dog.

The Troll Witch & Others: “Makoma”
Words: Mike Mignola | Art: Mike Mignola & Richard Corben | Colours: Dave Stewart | Letters: Clem Robins
Originally published by Dark Horse in Hellboy: Makoma or, A Tale Told by a Mummy in the New York City Explorers’ Club on August 16, 1993 #1-2  | February-March 2006
Collected in Hellboy - Volume 7: The Troll Witch and Others | Hellboy Library Edition - Volume 4 | Hellboy: Complete Short Stories - Volume 2
Plot Summary:
Hellboy listens to the story of Makoma, a giant slayer in Africa, as told by a mummy who bore witness to some of the hero’s deeds and was freed by them.
Reading Notes:
(Note: Pagination does not represent anything within the issues or collections themselves, it is solely in reference to the chapter.)
Tumblr media
pg. 1 - Love the establishing shot for the Explorers’ club. And the old-time diving helmet that almost seems a staple of all of these groups.
Tumblr media
pg. 1-2 - The story of the expedition to the lost city is interesting, but it’s more telling that Hellboy cares about the Professors’s life, whereas Koman only cares about gaining more loot from antiquity.
pg. 3 - I like how it dovetails into the disappearance of Trevor Bruttenholm and the Cavendish expedition, with this being one of the first historical stories that fits within already established timelines and events.
Also, love young Hellboy.
Tumblr media
pg. 4 - The colours that Dave Stewart is using for the flashback are beautiful. Nice soft purple that gives the entire sequence an ephemeral feel.
The small Hellboy figure reminds me of George Herriman.
Tumblr media
pg. 5 - It’s always interesting when Hellboy is transported away by an experience not witnessed by those around him.
Also, again, the colours are just gorgeous.
Tumblr media
pg. 6 - Wonderful layout. The statues and architecture from Mignola are just amazing. Really enhancing the idea that the mummy’s story is transporting Hellboy elsewhere.
Tumblr media
pg. 7 - And Hellboy drifts off to sleep. The structure and content of this story also reminds me of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Le Petit Prince for some reason.
Tumblr media
pg. 8 - Interesting that Hellboy would be Makoma.
Also, just look at the use of shadow and colour for the reveal of Makoma. Though we know what Hellboy looks like, it’s impressive enough as though we’re seeing him again for the first time. Richard Corben and Dave Stewart really complement one another well.
Tumblr media
pg. 10 - The commands for the various quests always seem very strange.
pg. 11 - “To wander... Days... Months... Years...” begins a clever little narrative trick that Mignola’s going to use throughout the story of repetition and the passage of time. It takes the overall theme of cycles and presents it in its most basic form, working in the idea even when you’re not aware of it.
Tumblr media
pg. 12 - The design for the first giant, working off a rhino, is incredible.
Also, I love Clem Robins’ sound effects. Working them in as part of the panel is a nice touch. It gives the impression that the “CRAK” is loud enough to even break the bounds of the panel.
pg. 14 - That idea of repetition also comes back through the gathering of the various giants into his sack.
Tumblr media
pg. 15 - The elephant-giant is another great design. I also love how lush Corben is drafting the wildlife and flora. It’s just beautiful.
And Mignola poking fun at the idea of putting all of these creatures, even miniaturized after Makoma absorbs their strength, into his sack.
Tumblr media
pg. 16 - This one reminds me more of Abe than your average frog monster. I wonder if that was intentional.
pg. 17-18 - Wonderful fight sequence. It’s a testament to the storytelling that though repetition is part of the theme, it never seems boring.
Tumblr media
pg. 19 - Another great design for the fire demon/salamander here. The play between shadow and colour is incredible.
pg. 20-21 - Another stunning fight sequence.
Tumblr media
pg. 22 - And there’s the temptation, of Makoma becoming Anung Un-Rama. It makes you wonder, though, if this is Hellboy’s transference of his destiny to the Makoma tale or if we’re to take it as though Makoma is a previous incarnation of Hellboy’s spirit, or whatever. I’d kind of lean towards the latter, since the overall theme of this story is repetitive cycles.
Tumblr media
pg. 23 - And then we get the renunciation, similar to Hellboy’s own when faced with the choice.
pg. 24 - The “Makoma is great” chant from the fallen giants in his sack is hilarious every time.
Tumblr media
pg. 25 - Gorgeous establishing shots.
Tumblr media
pg. 27 - Corben reminding us that he’s as adept at the grotesque as anything else.
pg. 28 - Dude’s idea of bliss is messed up. Who would think being a slave or “the endless, dreamless sleep of living death” would be appealing to anyone? I think he’s been out getting baked with his giant sand ants for too long, huffing the fumes from the decomposing flesh of his pals.
Tumblr media
pg. 29 - These ants are just neat.
pg. 30-31 - The trick in order to keep the bag is pretty clever.
Tumblr media
pg. 32 - There’s the repetition of cycles through passage of time again. It’s also kind of creepy as the bones begin to pile up.
pg. 33 - And we’re brought full circle to the old woman who commanded him to stick the giants in a sack at the beginning of the tale.
Tumblr media
pg. 34 - Who apparently wants sex with Makoma. That’s an unexpected direction, definitely. And she’s not an evil, soul-stealing witch either.
Tumblr media
pg. 35 - The repetition again in a slightly different form of Makoma meeting the spirit of Africa, similar to how Hellboy did when he was a kid, is a nice touch. Also, the lions similar to how Hellboy was confronted by them in “The Third Wish”.
Tumblr media
pg. 36 - The giants’ fate is horrifying, heartbreaking, even as the old woman tells Makoma what she’s done, and the look on his face is priceless.
Tumblr media
pg. 37 - The tears are creepy.
pg. 38 - And the dropping of the glamour, or whatever, that made the old woman look young is a great composition.
Although it is an interesting touch that the giants sacrificed themselves to give the last of their strength to Makoma to face the final battle.
Tumblr media
pg. 39 - I just love everything about these three panels. The build-up to the final confrontation is simple, but astounding. Great use of negative space through the bones.
Tumblr media
pg. 40 - Makoma vs. The Dragon. Hellboy vs. the Ogdru Jahad. The design for the Dragon is also incredible.
pg. 41-43 - Epic battle.
Tumblr media
pg. 44 - And then a shift, from looking like Hellboy in appearance to how you’d probably naturally expect Makoma to look.
pg. 45 - Death and rebirth, and a resumption of the cycle.
Tumblr media
pg. 46 - Interesting revelation as to who the mummy is.
Tumblr media
pg. 47 - Poor mummy.
Also, I love the repetition of Hellboy’s shocked look by Mignola of the similar panel earlier from Corben when he found out what he’d eaten.
pg. 48 - The matter-of-fact end title cards are hilarious.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts:
“Makoma” kind of has an interesting place in the Hellboy canon in that it blends main narrative themes and concepts with the one-off nature of the various fables and folk tale retellings as well as the bits and pieces of Hellboy’s history to create a story that encapsulates pretty much all of Hellboy in microcosm. If you only wanted to read a single Hellboy tale to get the gist of the broader whole, it would be this one.
It’s a tale that parallels the through line in the main narrative of Ragnarok. Of death and rebirth, of cyclical recurrences, and of destiny and breaking it.
It’s also the first with legendary artist, Richard Corben, proving with every panel as to why he’s a master. Corben is great with weird and horror, but also with presenting, well, just about anything. This was the start of a number of collaborations between Mignola and Corben, with Corben almost becoming the face of the Hellboy history stories for a while (just as Duncan Fegredo would for the present as we’ll see in Darkness Calls).

THE SECOND BOOK OF MACHABEES. - From The Latin Vulgate Bible
Chapter 13
INTRODUCTION.
This Second Book of Machabees is not a continuation of the history contained in the First; nor does it come down so low as the First does, but relates many of the same facts more at large, and adds other remarkable particulars, omitted in the First Book, relating to the state of the Jews as well before as under the persecution of Antiochus. The author, who is not the same with that of the First Book, has given (as we learn from chap. ii. 20., &c.) a short abstract of what Jason, of Cyrene, had written in the five volumes, concerning Judas and his brethren. He wrote in Greek, and begins with two letters, sent by the Jews of Jerusalem to their brethren in Egypt. (Challoner) --- Hence the whole book has been considered by some as an epistle. (Cotelier, Can. Ap. p. 338.) --- But it is easy to distinguish the letter from the history, (Calmet) to which a preface is prefixed, chap. ii. 20. Yet the Alexandrian copy has at the end, "A letter concerning the acts of Judas Mach.[Machabeus.]" (Haydock) --- The appendix of two epistles was added to the First Book by him who wrote the second, (Worthington) abridging the work of Jason. (Haydock)
The additional Notes in this Edition of the New Testament will be marked with the letter A. Such as are taken from various Interpreters and Commentators, will be marked as in the Old Testament. B. Bristow, C. Calmet, Ch. Challoner, D. Du Hamel, E. Estius, J. Jansenius, M. Menochius, Po. Polus, P. Pastorini, T. Tirinus, V. Bible de Vence, W. Worthington, Wi. Witham. — The names of other authors, who may be occasionally consulted, will be given at full length.
Chapter 13
Antiochus and Lysias again invade Judea. Menelaus is put to death. The king's great army is worsted twice. The peace is renewed.
1 In *(Year of the World 3841, Year before Christ 163) the year one hundred and forty-nine, Judas understood that Antiochus Eupator was coming with a multitude against Judea,
Notes & Commentary:
Ver. 1. Eupator. Several of his generals had been already defeated. He therefore comes in person, 1 Machabees vi. 28. (Calmet) --- He was not above ten years old. But Lysias thought that his presence would animate the soldiers. (Haydock)
2 And with him Lysias, the regent, who had charge over the affairs of the realm, having with him a hundred and ten thousand footmen, five thousand horsemen, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariots armed with hooks.
Ver. 2. A hundred and ten thousand, &c. The difference between the numbers here set down and those recorded 1 Mac. iv. is easily accounted for, if we consider that such armies as these are liable to be at one time more numerous that at another, either by sending away large detachments, or being diminished by sickness, or increased by receiving fresh supplies of troops, according to different exigencies or occurrences. Ch. --- There are many such difficulties in the Books of Kings, &c. Only some of the troops were permanent. W. --- Most were auxiliaries, so that the number might often vary. Nothing is said of the chariots. 1 B. vi. 30.
3 Menelaus also joined himself with them: and with great deceitfulness besought Antiochus, not for the welfare of his country, but in hopes that he should be appointed chief ruler.
Ver. 3. Country. He had continued at Antioch, as the Jews would not receive him. C. iv. 24. C. --- Yet now he pretended to be solicitous for their welfare, (H.) only that he might obtain power.
4 But the King of kings stirred up the mind of Antiochus against the sinner, and upon Lysias suggesting that he was the cause of all the evils, he commanded (as the custom is with them) that he should be apprehended and put to death in the same place.
Ver. 4. Evils. The ambition of Jason and of Menelaus had brought on all these disturbances. C. iv. 7. &c. and 1 B. i. 12. --- Place. It would seem on the journey to Judea: but Josephus says he was slain after the king's return, at Antioch. The sacred historian relates what concerns him together. C. --- In the. Gr. "conducting him to Berea." H.
5 Now there was in that place a tower fifty cubits high, having a heap of ashes on every side: this had a prospect steep down.
Ver. 5. Down. A beam was laid across the walls, on which the criminal, having been well regaled with wine, was placed till he fell among the ashes. V. Max. ix. 2. --- Hystaspes invented this punishment. C. --- Prospect. Gr. "organ, (or round instrument)" (Prot.) like a wheel, (C.) "hanging (or whirling a person) on all sides headlong over the ashes. Thence all pushed him who was guilty of sacrilege, or of other crimes, forward to ruin." H. --- Syr. passes over v. 5. and 6. C.
6 From thence he commanded the sacrilegious wretch to be thrown down into the ashes, all men thrusting him forward unto death.
Ver. 6. No explanation given.
7 And by such a law it happened that Menelaus, the transgressor of the law, was put to death: not having so much as burial in the earth.
Ver. 7. No explanation given.
8 And indeed very justly, for insomuch as he had committed many sins against the altar of God, the fire and ashes of which were holy: he was condemned to die in ashes.
Ver. 8. No explanation given.
9 But the king, with his mind full of rage, came on to shew himself worse to the Jews than his father was.
Ver. 9. With. Gr. "rendered barbarous by his designs," (H.) intending to punish the Jews worse than his father.
10 Which when Judas understood, he commanded the people to call upon the Lord day and night, that as he had always done, so now also he would help them:
Ver. 10. No explanation given.
11 Because they were afraid to be deprived of the law, and of their country, and of the holy temple: and that he would not suffer the people, that had of late taken breath for a little while, to be again in subjection to blasphemous nations.
Ver. 11. No explanation given.
12 So when they had all done this together, and had craved mercy of the Lord with weeping and fasting, lying prostrate on the ground for three days continually, Judas exhorted them to make themselves ready.
Ver. 12. No explanation given.
13 But he, with the ancients, determined before the king should bring his army into Judea, and make himself master of the city, to go out, and to commit the event of the thing to the judgment of the Lord.
Ver. 13. Ancients. The people were not convoked. C.
14 So committing all to God, the Creator of the world, and having exhorted his people to fight manfully, and to stand up even to death for the laws, the temple, the city, their country, and citizens: he placed his army about Modin.
Ver. 14. No explanation given.
15 And having given his company for a watchword, The victory of God, with most valiant chosen young men, he set upon the king's quarter by night, and slew four thousand men in the camp, and the greatest of the elephants, with them that had been upon him,
Ver. 15. Watchword that night. W. --- He usually gave some pious sentence. C. vii. 23. --- Quarter. Lit. "hall," (H.) a prætorium, or tent. --- Four. Some Gr. and Lat. copies have "two." Syr. "three," though the old edit. of the Vulg. read, 14,000. --- Greatest, carrying thirty-two men. 1 B. vi. 37. Gr. also, "the chief over the elephants, with all his troops in the house," (H.) or the servants. C. --- Prot. "will all that were upon him." H. --- This office was very considerable. C. xiv. 12. Grot. C.
16 And having filled the camp of the enemies with exceeding great fear and tumult, they went off with good success.
Ver. 16. No explanation given.
17 Now this was done at the break of day, by the protection and help of the Lord.
Ver. 17. No explanation given.
18 But the king having taken a taste of the hardiness of the Jews, attempted to take the strong places by policy:
Ver. 18. No explanation given.
19 And he marched with his army to Bethsura, which was a strong hold of the Jews: but he was repulsed, he failed, he lost his men.
Ver. 19. No explanation given.
20 Now Judas sent necessaries to them that were within.
Ver. 20. No explanation given.
21 But Rhodocus, one of the Jews' army, disclosed the secrets to the enemies, so he was sought out, and taken up, and put in prison.
Ver. 21. Prison. This traitor was either in the camp or at Bethsura. C.
22 Again the king treated with them that were in Bethsura: gave his right hand: took theirs: and went away.
Ver. 22. Away. Cæsar said in the same laconic style, Veni, vidi, vici. H.
23 He fought with Judas: and was overcome. And when he understood that Philip, who had been left over the affairs, had rebelled at Antioch, he was in a consternation of mind, and entreating the Jews, and yielding to them, he swore to all things that seemed reasonable, and, being reconciled, offered sacrifice, honoured the temple, and left gifts.
Ver. 23. Overcome. Hence Eleazar signalized himself. 1 B. vi. 43. --- Rebelled. Lysias persuaded him to treat the just exertions of Philip in this light. He was himself the usurper of the regency. He easily persuaded the young prince that peace was now most expedient; and conditions were granted to the Jews, which would have been very advantageous if they had been observed. But the king having offered sacrifice by the hands of the priests, and seeing the strength of the wall round Sion, ordered them to be demolished. C.
24 He embraced Machabeus, and made him governor and prince from Ptolemais unto the Gerrenians.
Ver. 24. Gerrenians. Gerrus was on the frontiers of Egypt. Ptol. --- It was formerly called Gerara. Gen. xx. 1. The successors of Judas afterwards possessed this government. C. --- Gr. "He made Hegemonides governor from," &c. Usher, A. 3841.
25 But when he was come to Ptolemais, the men of that city were much displeased with the conditions of the peace, being angry for fear they should break the covenant.
Ver. 25. Of the. They disliked a Jewish governor, being always bitter against that nation. C. vi. 8. and 1 B. v. 15. and xii. 48. C. --- Gr. "they or he raged, because they would break the agreements" (H.) with the Jews, (C.) or would revolt. Syr. Grot.
26 Then Lysias went up to the judgment-seat, and set forth the reason, and appeased the people, and returned to Antioch: and thus matters went with regard to the king's coming and his return.
Ver. 26. No explanation given.

Current Hibari characterization is butchered by the tyranny of the masses. Will you adapt? Or will you perish like a dog? *read more link* *10k meta essay*
how to write hibari????? I can't seem to grasp his character so any tips?
show me the hibari meta. im ready
i hate all of you
Entry level:
Hibari's tendency towards animal metaphors isn’t ever made clear - he obviously considers them animal metaphors, considering his ‘bite you to death’ and how he frames crowds as herds, but their actual extent is up in the air.
However, what we do know about it is that Hibari uses the “herbivore” moniker specifically for cowards. If he hates someone who isn’t a coward, he gives them a title or nickname (like with Yamamoto, Reborn, and Gokudera, who he refers to by their most identifiable traits, Dino, who he gives a sarcastic nickname, or Xanxus, who he just straight-up insults). If he respects someone, he refers to them by their name. He does this to Yamamoto later in the story, and his future self does this for Tsuna.
At no point does he ever refer to someone as a “carnivore”, because he respects brave warriors, and if someone is brave and strong enough to earn his good favour, they earn the privilege of being taken seriously, by being referred to as their given name.
Hibari currently refers to Yamamoto by his full name and Kusakabe Tetsuya by just his name. He might be taken to referring to Reborn and Shouichi by their names if endeared to them. It’s unclear how he’d refer to Gokudera. He’d never refer to Xanxus by his name because their desires are fundamentally at odds.
There’s a notable exception in Tsuna, who Hibari doesn’t really respect, but understands enough about his strength that he’s unwilling to call him a herbivore. Tsuna’s ingenuity and raw power outranks his “cowardice”, so Hibari would prefer to call him a Small Animal. Hibari also loves small animals and wants to care for them, so this is also pretty gay
I haven’t reread the series in a while so I’m missing a few details. But you know
Intermediate Level:
He is just as much of a theatric edgelord as Mukuro is and thats why they can never get along. They both eat that “mortal enemies who cannot stop until the other is defeated” except they fundamentally misunderstand what the other considers a “mortal enemy” - Hibari’s objective is to Win, while Mukuro’s objective is to control, and both of them just misunderstand each other to be on the same page. If Hibari Won, he’d completely blow Mukuro off, because his mental dramatic character arc has been completed. Hibari and Mukuro are the edgy version of the Gokudera/Yamamoto dynamic and it’s a greatly underutilized comedy routine. How dare Amano reduce it to 1 panel in the Rainbow arc, like a coward
ANYWAY, Hibari is a fucking chuunibyou and since no one believes me I’m back with receipts
Volume 2, chapter 16:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hibari talks a lot. He has something to say every time he’s prompted. It’s incredibly important to him that he’s the most important thing in the room and he has the respect of everyone around him, and having a dominant personality is key to that image. The difference between him and a Fucking Chuunibyou is theoretically nothing, but in execution it’s more that he makes good on his threats.
But they’re still theatrics, because immediately after asserting dominance, he does this:
Tumblr media
His goal was just to dominate everyone with the minimum possible effort. Tsuna got smacked, so he’s been Adequately Dominated, but the other two fought back, so they needed to be knocked out. Since knocking out is dangerous, though, he’s made sure to take care of them afterwards.
Hibari isn’t a wild animal or anything. He meticulously cares for anyone he “bites”. If they’re fine, like Tsuna ends up being, he’s like “yeah, just sit on the couch for a second and rest for a little bit”. It’s only after Tsuna crosses him again that he goes back to violence.
Hibari isn’t a rampaging delinquent, he’s a selfish asshole who associates violence with control, and that’s why he’s an abuse survivor in all my shitty AUs
But back to the theatrics and him being a chuuni fuck
Volume 6, Chapter 43:
Tumblr media
hhHFHAHGAHGSKJGKGSGKSHFAH
Hibari just, clearly likes peaceful time alone? Looking at the trees? There’s no reason for a human being to say shit like this without blinking unless they think it sounds cool. Hibari curates his self-image meticulously.
Before I move on to exaggerate the point, here’s some other micrometas:
Tumblr media
hibari is attractive enough to be sexually harassed by Hetscum, King Of The Restraining Orders, making him one of the only few characters explicitly handsome, which is important because Amano draws everyone hot and I need some sort of justification for the cold sweat I broke into when I saw 10YL Hibari for the first time
(also he looks like a pretentious nerd in these early chapters so its worth noting in general)
Tumblr media
Hibari’s entire character arc is literally the fact that he has the exact same problem. It’s possible that the reason Dino pisses him off so much is because he feels embarrassed at the implication of hypocrisy.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fact these 2 expressions happen in abrupt sequence is so fucking funny I love him (also, proof again that he isn’t a wild violent animal intent on abusing others - being contradicted doesn’t anger him, he just assumes Winning will solve the problem, because, I’m sorry to say, Hibari is not a thinker, which I’ll get to later)
BACK TO THE CHUUNI ISSUE
Volume 5, Chapter 38:
Tumblr media
And then he doesn’t do anything to Tsuna.
I don’t even have to comment on this. Hibari’s just a weirdo
Volume 34, Chapter 330:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hibari has, at this point, witnessed Tsuna recover from a snapped neck and kill god. He saw this with his own two eyes. Tsuna asserted dominance over the closest this series has to the literal devil, eater of dimensions, and he only a few chapters earlier explicitly told Tsuna that he respects him so much that to defeat him in battle is a grand ambition of his and complimented him on his ingenuity and specialized power.
Hibari is lying here. He is lying through his teeth. He has finally entered tsun territory. He knows this conflict is important to Tsuna and is affording it to him, but because he painstakingly maintains self-image, he has to make it out to seem like he’s doing this for entirely selfish motives. “Wait for you to be killed”? What could that possibly afford him? Nothing, but it sounds cool, so that’s what he goes with.
it’s worth nothing that he’s functionally identical to Mukuro in this respect, except while Hibari communicates that he cares for Tsuna through Manly Warrior Affordances, Mukuro straight-out attacks Tsuna and compensates for his feelings with constant hostility. Both are funny but Hibari’s is full of more warmth and companionship so that one’s the best.
Anyway, god I forgot how cluttered and ugly the paneling had gotten during this arc
Chapter 335:
Tumblr media
It’s not as if he’s giving Tsuna special treatment, either, because he does the exact same “I could...BUT I WON’T” half-hearted dismissal when he comes upon a somewhat exhausted Mukuro. Everyone knows that Hibari hates Mukuro and wants to fight him, but Mukuro has just defeated the enemy as an ally, so he chucks a tonfa at him and says “reaction time is shit, get some sleep”. Hibari was slighted by being defeated, but he has garnered respect for Mukuro, but he can’t tolerate having these opinions concurrently, because he’s incredibly straight-forward and it doesn’t mesh with his “character”
Look at his dumb face. He’s entered Full Tsun.
Expert level:
Hibari is super fucking Autistic and loves his friends
I mentioned before that he’s not a thinker. It’s not as if he doesn’t try - his observational skills are actually pretty good, and he composes a lot of reasonable conclusions based on the evidence he’s provided. For example, after fighting Daisy:
Tumblr media
But he often falls into logical stopgaps, and his method of resolving these are...less than ideal.
Tumblr media
Situation: Hibari meets with a conflict to his worldview, image, or judgement
Conclusion:
Tumblr media
He hits it until it stops being a problem.
Hibari is like a Sims character that will scream at the wall that used to hold the door they were about to walk through for 30 minutes instead of rerouting. He doesn’t care about being crossed, because he can easily understand it and control that variable, but he is hideously offended by contradiction. If his worldview is challenged, he gets pissed off.
This is the primary reason he and Dino struggle to get along - the entire basis of teaching Hibari is the assumption that Hibari isn’t already right about everything. Dino has to challenge everything about Hibari’s preexisting notions, and Hibari hates him for it. Dino’s lessons excel the most when he feeds into Hibari’s view of things, which is why the 2 things that got through to him by the end is “anger is power” and “flexibility is strength”.
Hibari’s forthright, carefully maintained image also affects how he communicates with people. He talks a lot, sure, but it’s usually to talk at people about how fucking cool and above them he is. He rarely actually communicates his interest in others, which is why him talking to Tsuna about what he likes about him is so important.
It’s also why this tiny panel-and-a-half is one of the best Hibari moments in the series:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Since when?? Have you respected Yamamoto?? He’s given zero indication of being fond of him until now. There’s absolutely no basis for this immense respect he’s solemnly presenting. He’s been mostly scornful of Yamamoto during the Daily Life arc. Hibari says this with such assuredness that he definitely thinks that liking Yamamoto Takeshi is in line with his character, unlike with Tsuna or Mukuro, who he also secretly grew fond of but is unwilling to admit as much, but Hibari just flies this like a fact.
Hibari Kyouya is fully capable of being friendly with others, but he struggles to operate outside of camaraderie. He definitely cares for Kusakabe, and they grew close over the years, but the first thing he says when he sees Kusakabe (10YL) “herding” up with a bunch of unconscious teenagers is “you’re fired”.
Again, great basis for my AU fanfic where he’s an abuse survivor, especially when Mukuro, a canonical abuse survivor, has the same problem (with a different way of coping), but it also says a lot from the perspective of someone with Autism - he wants to become close to others, but communicating basic ideas like that is entirely beyond him. Hibari only operates in his comfort areas, and is hostile to being forced out of them.
And yet Dino, who is the only character besides Kusakabe who has spent a significant amount of time around him, described Hibari to be similar to his ancestor, and when he gives reasons for that conclusion, he also mentions...
Tumblr media
And this is observable! Because Hibari's reactions are missing from scenes he has no engagement in, like this one:
Tumblr media
We can actually pick out scenes where he mentally checks off people as “worthy”, like this one:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is also where it’s more apparent that Hibari respects strength/bravery. Shouichi is obviously a cowardly mess of a person, but when he says “we are WINNING”, Hibari makes note of him.
Anyway in conclusion Hibari is a gay autistic chuuni and I love him. Here’s Hibari getting mad at Squalo for being around without permission, something he previously expected of his friends
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“mu.”

Jesus Taught In Their Synagogues Being Glorified By All
Luke 4:22 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
22 And all were all speaking well of him, and marveled at the gracious words that were coming out of his mouth; and they said, “Is not this Joseph’s son?”
Officers Sent to Arrest Jesus
John 7:32, 45-46 Updated American Standard Version (UASV)
32 The Pharisees heard the crowd murmuring these things about him, and the chief priests and Pharisees sent officers to arrest him. 45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, who said to them, “Why did you not bring him?” 46 The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!”
The chief priests and the Pharisees sent temple guards [officers] to arrest Jesus but they failed in their mission. They had to return to chief priests and the Pharisees empty-handed. The chief priests and Pharisees demanded an explanation:“Why did you not bring him?” Really, this is a great question considering that Jesus would have offered no physical resistance? The temple guards explained: “No one ever spoke like this man!” These officers were so impressed with the teaching of Jesus that they could not bring themselves to arrest this peaceful man.
Those temple guards were not alone in their marveling at the teachings of Jesus. The Gospels tell us that people came in great numbers just to hear Jesus speak. The people in his hometown of Nazareth “marveled at the gracious words that were coming out of his mouth.” (Luke 4:22) Several times Jesus spoke from a boat to large crowds assembled on the Seashore of Galilee. (Mark 3:9; 4:1; Luke 5:1-3) On one specific occasion, a “large crowd” stayed with him for several days, even going without food.—Mark 8:1, 2.
What was it exactly that made Jesus such an outstanding teacher? His love for humanity was the primary reason. In addition, Jesus loved the truths that he conveyed, and he felt great empathy and pity for those he taught. However, Jesus also had a remarkable grasp of different teaching methods. In several blog articles (THE GREAT TEACHER Series), we will discuss some of the effective methods that he used and how we can imitate them. We all have spoken to highly-educated persons, who use words that are far above the understanding of their listeners. However, what these ones do not understand is, if they do not make themselves understood by others, how can his listeners benefit from what he has to say. As a teacher, Jesus never used high sounding language, i.e., words that were above the understanding of his listeners. Imagine, we are talking about the Son of God here. Jesus at twelve-years-old sat before the greatest teachers in Judaism and astounded them. Imagine the range of the vocabulary he had at his disposal but never used. Even though Jesus Christ, the Son of God, had an infinite knowledge of everything, he thought of his listeners, not of himself. He knew that many of them “were uneducated and untrained men.” (Acts 4:13) In order to reach them with his message, to teach them, he used a vocabulary and many teaching styles that they would understand. However, while the words may have been simple and each to understand, the truths that they conveyed were profound.
In a previous CPH Blog article, we looked at the Sermon on the Mount, recorded at Matthew 5:3–7:27. Think about it, it may have only taken Jesus just 20 minutes to deliver that sermon. Still, the teachings therein are deep, getting at the very heart of such matters as adultery, divorce, and materialism. (Matthew 5:27-32; 6:19-34) throughout this sermon, though, there were no complicated or high-sounding expressions. In the Greek, there is hardly even a word that even a young child could not easily understand! There is little wonder that when he completed his sermon that the crowds the crowds “were astounded[88] at his teaching” (Matthew 7:28), which likely included many farmers, shepherds, and fishermen.
Astounded: (Gr. ekplēssō) This is one who is extremely astounded or amazed, so much so that they lose their mental self-control, as they are overwhelmed emotionally.–Matt. 7:28; Mark 1:22; 7:37; Lu 2:48; 4:32; 9:43; Ac 13:12.
Jesus often used clear, short phrases, uttering sayings that were simple but deep in meaning. 1,400-years before printed books, he thus imprinted his message that could not be removed or forgotten on the minds and hearts of his listeners. Note some examples: “No one can serve two masters; . . . You cannot serve God and money.” “Do not judge, so that you will not be judged.” “you will recognize them by their fruits.” “Those who are healthy do not have need of a physician, but those who are sick.” “All who take the sword will perish by the sword.” “Give to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God!” “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”   (Matthew 6:24; 7:1, 20; 9:12; 26:52; Mark 12:17; Acts 20:35) Even today, almost 2,000 years after they were uttered by Jesus, such powerful sayings are easily remembered by most Christians and unbelievers.

BLESSED BY GOD IN SATAN’S WORLD How All Things Are Working for Your Good
All of us will go through difficult times that we may not fully understand. But when we find ourselves in such a place, it’s crucial that we realize God has given us a way out. (1 Cor. 10:13) Edward Andrews writes that if we remain steadfast in our faith and apply God’s Word correctly when we go through difficult times, we will not only grow spiritually, but we will …

DEFENDING AGABUS AS A NEW TESTAMENT PROPHET: A Content-Based Study of His Predictions In Acts by Sung Cho
Agabus is a mysterious prophetic figure that appears only twice in the book of Acts. Though his role is minor, he is a significant figure in a great debate between cessationists and continualists. On one side are those who believe that the gift of prophecy is on par with the inspired Scriptures, infallible, and has ceased. On the other side are those who define it as fallible and non-revelatory speech that continues today in the life of the church. Proponents of both camps attempt to claim …

THE SECOND BOOK OF MACHABEES. - From The Latin Vulgate Bible
Chapter 12
(Haydock)
Chapter 12
The Jews are still molested by their neighbours. Judas gains divers victories over them. He orders sacrifice and prayers for the dead.
1 When *(Year of the World 3841, Year before Christ 163) these covenants were made, Lysias went to the king, and the Jews gave themselves to husbandry.
Notes & Commentary:
Ver. 1. No explanation given.
2 But they that were behind, viz. Timotheus, and Apollonius, the son of Genneus, also Hieronymus, and Demophon, and besides them Nicanor, the governor of Cyprus, would not suffer them to live in peace, and to be quiet.
Ver. 2. Timotheus and Apolloinus. Others of the same name were slain before, chap. x. 37., and 1 Machabees iii. 11. (Worthington) (Calmet)
3 The men of Joppe also were guilty of this kind of wickedness: they desired the Jews, who dwelt among them, to go with their wives and children into the boats, which they had prepared, as though they had no enmity to them.
Ver. 3. No explanation given.
4 Which when they had consented to, according to the common decree of the city, suspecting nothing, because of the peace: when they were gone forth into the deep, they drowned no fewer than two hundred of them.
Ver. 4. No explanation given.
5 But as soon as Judas heard of this cruelty done to his countrymen, he commanded the men that were with him: and after having called upon God, the just judge,
Ver. 5. No explanation given.
6 He came against those murderers of his brethren, and set the haven on fire in the night, burnt the boats, and slew with the sword them that escaped from the fire.
Ver. 6. No explanation given.
7 And when he had done these things in this manner, he departed as if he would return again, and root out all the Joppites.
Ver. 7. No explanation given.
8 But when he understood that the men of Jamnia also designed to do in like manner to the Jews that dwelt among them,
Ver. 8. Designed. The heart is the source of sin, and God thus punished the intentions of the Jamnites. (Haydock)
9 He came upon the Jamnites also by night, and set the haven on fire, with the ships, so that the light of the fire was seen at Jerusalem, two hundred and forty furlongs off.
Ver. 9. Off, or ten leagues. Jerusalem was on elevated ground. (Calmet) --- A furlong is about the eighth part of a mile, (others say the fifth, or a thousand feet) so that the fire was seen at the distance of thirty or forty-eight miles. (Worthington)
10 And when they were now gone from thence nine furlongs, and were marching towards Timotheus, five thousand footmen, and five hundred horsemen of the Arabians, set upon them.
Ver. 10. No explanation given.
11 And after a hard fight, in which, by the help of God, they got the victory, the rest of the Arabians being overcome, besought Judas for peace, promising to give him pastures, and to assist him in other things.
Ver. 11. Rest. Greek, "the Nomades," (Haydock) who dwelt in tents, and lived on plunder, (Strabo xvi.) like Ismael, Genesis xvi. 12.
12 And Judas thinking that they might be profitable indeed in many things, promised them peace, and after having joined hands, they departed to their tents.
Ver. 12. No explanation given.
13 He also laid siege to a certain strong city, encompassed with bridges and walls, and inhabited by multitudes of different nations, the name of which is Casphin.
Ver. 13. Casphin; Chasbon, or Hesebon, 1 Machabees v. 26., and Numbers xxi. 25. It was famous for its waters.
14 But they that were within it, trusting in the strength of the walls, and the provision of victuals, behaved in a more negligent manner, and provoked Judas with railing and blaspheming, and uttering such words as were not to be spoken.
Ver. 14. Spoken. The enemy generally reviled the Jews.
15 But Machabeus calling upon the great Lord of the world, who without any rams or engines of war threw down the walls of Jericho, in the time of Josue, fiercely assaulted the walls.
Ver. 15. World. Thus setting a pattern to virtuous generals.
16 And having taken the city by the will of the Lord, he made an unspeakable slaughter, so that a pool adjoining, of two furlongs broad, seemed to run with the blood of the slain.
Ver. 16. No explanation given.
17 From thence they departed seven hundred and fifty furlongs, and came to Characa, to the Jews that are called Tubianites.
Ver. 17. Characa, or Carcar, Judges viii. 10., and xi. 3. (Calmet) --- Tubianites, "religiously good;" probably the Assideans, (1 Machabees ii. 42.; Worthington) or inhabitants of Tob. (Haydock)
18 But as for Timotheus, they found him not in those places, for before he had dispatched any thing he went back, having left a very strong garrison in a certain hold:
Ver. 18. Things. The Jews had retired to Characa or Dathema, so that he ravaged the country and left garrisons, which were cut in pieces. Judas soon after with 6000 routed Timotheus, though he had 122,500 men, 1 Machabees v. 8, 27, 43.
19 But Dositheus, and Sosipater, who were captains with Machabeus, slew them that were left by Timotheus in the hold, to the number of ten thousand men.
Ver. 19. No explanation given.
20 And Machabeus having set in order about him six thousand men, and divided them by bands, went forth against Timotheus, who had with him a hundred and twenty thousand footmen, and two thousand five hundred horsemen.
Ver. 20. No explanation given.
21 Now when Timotheus had knowledge of the coming of Judas, he sent the women and children, and the other baggage, before him into a fortress, called Carnion: for it was impregnable, and hard to come at, by reason of the straitness of the places.
Ver. 21. Carnion, or Asteroth Carnaim.
22 But when the first band of Judas came in sight, the enemies were struck with fear, by the presence of God, who seeth all things, and they were put to flight one from another, so that they were often thrown down by their own companions, and wounded with the strokes of their own swords.
Ver. 22. No explanation given.
23 But Judas was pursued them close, punishing the profane, of whom he slew thirty thousand men.
Ver. 23. No explanation given.
24 And Timotheus himself fell into the hands of the band of Dositheus and Sosipater, and with many prayers he besought them to let him go with his life, because he had the parents and brethren of many of the Jews, who, by his death, might happen to be deceived.
Ver. 24. Deceived. Greek, "if they slew him, would not be regarded," (Haydock) but slain without mercy. (Calmet)
25 And when he had given his faith that he would restore them according to the agreement, they let him go without hurt, for the saving of their brethren.
Ver. 25. No explanation given.
26 Then Judas went away to Carnion, where he slew five and twenty thousand persons.
Ver. 26. Carnion. Greek adds, "and the temple of Astergata," (Haydock) the idol Astarte, or Derceto of the Philistines.
27 And *(Year of the World 3841, Year before Christ 163) after he had put to flight and destroyed these, he removed his army to Ephron, a strong city, wherein there dwelt a multitude of divers nations: and stout young men standing upon the walls, made a vigorous resistance: and in this place there were many engines of war, and a provision of darts.
Ver. 27. No explanation given.
28 But when they had invocated the Almighty, who with his power breaketh the strength of the enemies, they took the city: and slew five and twenty thousand of them that were within.
Ver. 28. No explanation given.
29 From thence they departed to Scythopolis, which lieth six hundred furlongs from Jerusalem.
Ver. 29. Scythopolis. Formerly called Bethsan, (Challoner) near the lake of Tiberias.
30 But the Jews that were among the Scythopolitans testifying that they were used kindly by them, and that even in the times of their adversity they had treated them with humanity:
Ver. 30. No explanation given.
31 They gave them thanks, exhorting them to be still friendly to their nation, and so they came to Jerusalem, the feast of the weeks being at hand.
Ver. 31. Weeks of Pentecost, celebrated seven weeks after the Passover, Leviticus xxiii. 15. (Calmet)
32 And after Pentecost they marched against Gorgias, the governor of Idumea.
Ver. 32. Gorgias, who had been twice defeated, chap. x. 14., and 1 Machabees iv. 1. (Worthington) --- Idumea. Grotius would read Jamnia. But he might govern the southern parts of Juda, (Calmet) then occupied by the Idumeans. (Haydock)
33 And he came out with three thousand footmen, and four hundred horsemen.
Ver. 33. No explanation given.
34 And when they had joined battle, it happened that a few of the Jews were slain.
Ver. 34. No explanation given.
35 But Dositheus, a horseman, one of Bacenor's band, a valiant man, took hold of Gorgias: and when he would have taken him alive, a certain horseman of the Thracians came upon him, and cut off his shoulder: and so Gorgias escaped to Maresa.
Ver. 35. Maresa. Syriac, "Samaria," as the Vulgate has, 1 Machabees v. 66.
36 But when they that were with Esdrin had fought long, and were weary, Judas called upon the Lord to be their helper, and leader of the battle:
Ver. 36. No explanation given.
37 Then beginning in his own language, and singing hymns with a loud voice, he put Gorgias's soldiers to flight.
Ver. 37. No explanation given.
38 So Judas having gathered together his army, came into the city Odollam: and when the seventh day came, they purified themselves according to the custom, and kept the sabbath in the same place.
Ver. 38. Place. Probably without the walls, Numbers xix. 2, 17., and xxxi. 19.
39 And the day following Judas came with his company, to take away the bodies of them that were slain, and to bury them with their kinsmen, in the sepulchres of their fathers.
Ver. 39. Following, on Saturday evening, or on Sunday. --- Fathers, with those of the same nation.
40 And they found under the coats of the slain, some of the donaries of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbiddeth to the Jews: so that all plainly saw, that for this cause they were slain.
Ver. 40. Of the donaries, &c. That is, of the votive offerings, which had been hung up in the temples of the idols, which they had taken away when they burnt the port of Jamnia, (ver. 9.) contrary to the prohibition of the law, Deuteronomy vii. 25. (Challoner) --- All such things should have been destroyed, (Josue vii., and 1 Kings xv.; Worthington) or melted down. Perhaps the soldiers intended to bring them to Judas. He excused them charitably, and hoped that their temporal chastisement might have served to expiate their fault.
41 Then they all blessed the just judgment of the Lord, who had discovered the things that were hidden.
Ver. 41. No explanation given.
42 And so betaking themselves to prayers, they besought him, that the sin which had been committed might be forgotten. But the most valiant Judas exhorted the people to keep themselves from sin, forasmuch as they saw before their eyes what had happened, because of the sins of those that were slain.
Ver. 42. Forgotten. Syriac, "imperfect." Greek, "effaced." (Calmet) --- Some copies, "that they might not, on account of the sin committed, be entirely blotted out." (Aldus; Usher) --- They were convinced that some sins might be forgiven in the other world, particularly when the living interceded. (Calmet) --- The Jews began to pray for the dead after the captivity, (Grotius) when the prophets had more clearly explained what took place after death. (Calmet) --- Yet the doctrine and practice might still be as ancient as the world. (Haydock) --- If it had not prevailed before, Judas would never have entertained such sentiments. (Worthington) --- The Jews admit a sort of purgatory for "the prevaricators of Israel," which differs from hell only in duration. They assert that the damned of their nation are exempt from suffering on the sabbath. (Bartolocci; Leo v. 10.; Tirinus; Estius) --- Some Christians have supposed that the sin here specified was mortal, and the deceased in hell, yet prayer might be of service to them. Origen (Prin. iii. 6.) thought that even the devils would one day be liberated. St. Augustine (Ench. cx. 29.) says prayers "are of service, either that the remission may be entire, or surely that damnation itself may be more tolerable." Most understand this of purgatory: but several explain it of the damned. (Rrot. Bened.) --- A mass was formerly composed for this purpose, tolerabilia fiant ipsa tormenta: and some monks prayed for certain robbers slain, "that their pains might be diminished by the severe judge." (Aldrev. xxi) Excommunication might be taken off from the deceased. (St. Gregory, Dial. ii. 29.) --- Purgatory is for venial sins. (Ibid.[St. Gregory, Dial.] iv. 39.) This doctrine is proved beyond reply by various controvertists. (Calmet)
43 And making a gathering, he sent twelve thousand drachms of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection.
Ver. 43. Twelve. Greek, "two." Syriac, "three." St. Prosper. reads "12,000 talents." Sacrifices for the dead were not enjoined, but the practice was then established, and this author takes every opportunity of proving the resurrection against the Sadducees, who then began to appear. The Church of Christ has adopted the same practice. See Bellarmine, Serarius, &c. Our adversaries confess that such was the opinion of the Jews, and of the ancient doctors of the Church. But they declare it superstitious, and deny the authority of these books, which has been sufficiently established. Could such holy personages authorize superstition? Would Christ and his apostles have tolerated it? St. Paul prayed for Onesiphorus after his decease, 2 Timothy i. 16. See Matthew xii. 33., and Luke xvi. 9., and 1 Corinthians iii. 13., and xv. 29.; Eusebius, Life of Constantine iv.; St. Epiphanius, hær. lxxv.; St. Cyprian i. ep. 9.; Tertullian, &c. (Calmet)
44 (For if he had not hoped that they that were slain should rise again, it would have seemed superfluous and vain to pray for the dead)
Ver. 44. No explanation given.
45 And because he considered that they who had fallen asleep with godliness, had great grace laid up for them.
Ver. 45. With godliness. Judas hoped that these men who died fighting for the cause of God and religion, might find mercy; either because they might be excused from mortal sin by ignorance, or might have repented of their sin at least at their death. (Challoner) --- Charity requires us to judge thus, when there are no positive proofs to the contrary. (Calmet) --- Pope John VIII answered the bishops of France, that those who died fighting against infidels were saved. (Mabil. T. iii. An. Ben.) --- Judas might entertain the like hopes, though they are not always well grounded. (Haydock)
46 It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.
Ver. 46. Holy. This text is so clear, that our adversaries judge it best to deny the book to be canonical. As that has been authentically proved, (Preface) we shall only add that the Greek version, though differing in many points, is here as express as the Vulgate, (Worthington) 45. "considering that the best grace is laid up for those who sleep in piety. Holy and pious is the thought. (Haydock) Wherefore he made reconciliation (or expiation) for the dead, that they might be delivered from sin," or punishment due to it. (Worthington) --- Sin is often taken for the punishment; and this effect of mortal sin may be remitted in purgatory, when the person has sincerely repented in this life. (Haydock) --- To pass over other proofs, we will only mention St. Augustine (hær. liii.) and St. Bernard, (Cant. lxvi.) who plainly account those "heretics," who deny purgatory. It is also worthy of notice that Judas, who acted thus charitably, was the high priest and defender of the true faith; and that the Jews still pray for the dead, as the book Mahzor, published by Genebrard, 1569, evinces. There they say, "Let him rest in peace," and "ye angels of peace come forth to meet him." But this is acknowledged by Munster and Fagius, (in Deuteronomy xiv.) and by Whitaker. --- Sins. Go to 1 Machabees vi. 18. (Worthington)
