what i rlly like about blue eye samurai is that mizu isn’t “just” a woman pretending to be a man. it’s a trope you see every now and then but it’s always a simple dress up and you always get the scene of “oh, haha i am actually a woman sike”. that’s not how it is for mizu. her hiding her womanhood since childhood has made her relationship with gender so incredibly complex. even with that year or so where she fully embraced being a woman had to have felt at least a little ill-fitting to her. especially because she had to hide a big part of herself because of societal (and her husband’s) expectations. i’m pretty sure she liked being a woman but it must have felt stifling in a way considering she has lived as a man for so long. and being a man must feel at least a little performative to her because she is hiding away her femininity while doing so.
