Girls of Paper and Fire & Girls of Storm and Shadow by Natasha Ngan
So I read these two books back to back because the do feel like one large story rather than two smaller ones. Not to mention that the third book won’t be released until November so I figured I should get ahead. There’s alot I love in this epic, and there’s alot I’m not fond of.
PLOT: In this world there is a caste system. Moon, Steele, and Paper. Moon is a full fledged demon which takes the shape of an animal; any animal. Owls, Lions, Bear, Lizard, Bull you name it. Steeles are half-demons. Then there’s paper for regular humans whom are treated worst than dirt. Lei is a paper who was kidnapped by the King’s general to become the King’s columbine. A paper girl. At first Lei’s main goal was to find a way out, but along the way she meets another paper girl named Wren. The two develop a strong relationship and soon Lei has a new goal after one terrible night with the King...To take him down and protect the paper women from meeting the same fate.
The sequel is the about the start of Lei]s journey from being a commoner to a warrior. She and Wren meet up with some friends and together they are on the way to make allies and join forces in order to take down the King and his army. However as time goes on Lei discovers a few secrets about Wren that she wish she never knew. Secrets that make Lei question everything and who should be ruling the new kingdom.
PROS; Lei is truly a well written character. She doesn’t start of as a warrior already knowing how to take down her enemies. She’s brave but she knows her limits in the beginning. As time goes on and once she starts her training she is able to overcome anything that stands in her way. Her relationship with Wren also feels kind of natural. It’s not love at first sight, if anything Lei doesn’t like Wren at first for how prudist she was to  others. and yet the more they got to know each other the stronger their bond became. At least, in the first book. The second book was clever in showing the Wren was hiding more than just one or two secrets, she was pretty much hiding her entire past. Even betraying Lei a couple of times for the “greater good”.
The theme in the second is also pretty unique. War is grisly, gruesome, and it’s about who strikes the first blow. One of the character Merrin brought up the old fashioned “when you stare into the abyess it stares right back at you.” I truly loved how even Lei is questioning if their team is no better than the King’s army; just fighting for power and to rule a kingdom. There are other more subtle themes in regards to the King and his “actions” towards Lei, the emotional scars he left on her. It’s minute enough for a young adult to understand what happened and the effect it had on our protagonist.
The world building was pretty cool too. It’s definitely heavily themed in ancient China sprinkled with Japanese and maybe in Vietnamese. The palace feels huge and majestic, almost every night there’s a party with colorful lanterns and what sounds like delicious foods. Then in book two we see our characters walk through snowy mountains, visit another palace high above the clouds, sail the sea and cross the desert. The world feels so vast and I honestly hope we see more in book 3.
CONS: I do have a few issues, mainly with the second book. Now I’m all for representation; that’s fine. But in this fantasy ancient asian themed world you’d think there would be some straight couples walking around. But instead almost every main character and even some side characters never to be mentioned again are all gay or lesbian. I was kind of rolling my eyes at one point because of how predicable it was becoming.
In the first book it was fine because it still felt grounded even with talking animals. Lei and Wren’s love was forbidden on every level in the kingdom so for them to rebel made sense. But in the sequel I guess that was thrown out the window.
The King is also not that special. Yes he committed some despicable acts, and loves war, and is shown to be delusional. But other than that he feels pretty generic.
Last note is that the books keep taking about Lei’s eyes. How they are a unique color like gold and sand. This was mentioned so many times in both books that I thought it would lead to something like a prophecy, or even that she comes from a long line of warriors or goddesses. But no, she just has really odd eye colors. Hopefully book three makes use of Lei’s eyes otherwise I’m gonna be disappointed.
Book one was an excellent start, good characters and story so I give it a 7/10.
Book two while great world building and suspense, the characters felt flat and relationships felt cringy at times so it has to be a 6.5/10.

Ratched: Episode 5 Reactions
Party Planning
The red light stands for DRUGS
Ohh he’s meeting Mildred! On the outside this def looks like a date.
Ooh Mildred changing the game now that she’s got all the leverage.
Poor eclair didn’t deserve that
“This is about the lesbians, isn’t it?” Yes, always.
I almost feel bad for Bucket. Almost.
Oh is she gonna know Mildred put him up to this? Guess not.
Basically throwing herself a promotion party lol but yay a DANCE!!!
Is she planning to have Edmund do something to prove himself insane? Oh yep lol
Omg Mildred no this is too cruel don’t get Bucket’s hopes up 😂😂😂
“You’re a woman again” okay that’s laying it on a little thick
Haha Mildred finally dropping the pretense with Hanover. I love it.
“Trust me” Honestly why tho
Oooh who is this lady? She’s mean but she’s right, the way he’s holding that violin is terrible.
Oh, apparently she’s Ondine Duquette
Or Charlotte Wells? ...I see what’s happening.
Love an inaccurate portrayal of DID (sarcasm)
Mmm does Mildred know Hanover has a thing for her? (I think he does at least, or did) Cuz it’s pretty bold of her to touch his face like that.
Aw she’s on her date with Gwen!
Love how straightforward Gwen is and the communication here!
Oh Gwen was in love with a nurse who was killed in the war? That’s coincidental. And Mildred understands it.
Her companion!!! I’m excited but nervous. People might talk.
Lenore’s Arrival
Lenore and Petunia! They look so out of place here XD poor Louise
“The wallpaper hurts my feelings” I’d be lying if I said I’d never felt that strongly about wallpaper
Can’t believe she just invited Mildred to tea, but this is clearly a woman who’s used to getting what she wants.
Oh nice, she just wants Mildred to take over the job XD unfortunately, I think Mildred has other plans. She needs him, though not indefinitely. She’ll probably kill Hanover anyway once she frees Edmund, tie up loose ends. But there’s no harm in pretending to go along with Lenore’s wishes.
Oooh Lenore just got REAL angry about the money Mildred asked for. Guess they’ll be enemies!
Aw Betsy!!! She’s so nervous and so happy!
Hypnotherapy...this should be interesting
A RED-LETTER DAY FOR BETSY BUCKET
Fffff he’s trying to hypnotize his way out of a date. This is a new one 😂
Aw Dolly. Stop bonding with the bad man. He’s just using you.
HE DOESNT LOVE YOU
Ew I don’t like Mildred being alone with Edmund while he’s naked
Do we really trust him to hurt himself and not, you know, everyone else? Mildred does, apparently. Hope she doesn’t regret it.
Oh Charlotte...
AND THEY MADE HER NOT PRESS CHARGES
If only it really was as easy to get rid of trauma as snapping your fingers
Omg Hanover crying because he helped someone. This guy is so interesting, honestly. He does genuinely want to help people.
OMG LOUISE AND BETSY ARE FRIENDS?! Please tell me they just complain about Mildred all the time.
Okay so Betsy’s a little delusional lmao her retelling of Hanover’s reaction to the gifts is...quite altered
Omg they’re dancing this must have been the most fun scene to shoot on the whole show
“I’ve never seen you look so happy” I ship them
HA I knew they just complained about Mildred together
Lenore is there LENORE IS RIGHT THERE
Ohhh he’s breaking down. Little does he know that Mildred is the one who brought Lenore here.
Ahhh now he’s holed up at the hospital where Mildred is the only one who can reach him.
I think Lenore likes Mildred’s nerve now
The Dance
Mmm why do I feel like Charlotte might end up stealing Edmund’s thunder?
Poor Betsy. Hanover’s off to get drugged up.
Oh, he’s REALLY out of it. Jon Jon Brione is such a great actor.
So much for everyone ignoring Edmund lmao
She’s a PEACH
MMM Betsy’s onto Gwen and Mildred
Aaand Harold is distracted
Omg Dolly looks so pretty!!! Hope Edmund doesn’t kill her
Oh NO they’re planning on running?! I have no idea which plan he’s going to follow. I’m so nervous.
Oh their little clandestine handhold I cri
Betsy you are getting ahead of yourself a little
Omg causing a scene nooo
NOOO BETSY
Damn Hanover came outta nowhere with the rage
And now Gwen and Mildred have left to comfort her and NO ONE IS WATCHING EDMUND
Mildred’s sense of empathy really does strike at the oddest times and in the oddest ways.
Okay Edmund didn’t try anything while they were gone but this is definitely not going to go according to Mildred’s plan.
Noooo Harold!!! No one even got to tell you they’re lesbians 😔
FUCK GWEN NO
Duuude Dolly is excited by this. And I legit can’t tell if Edmund is playing at being freaked out by Gwen or it’s genuine.
Thoughts and Theories
Well, that was a packed episode! I really do feel bad for Betsy Bucket lol, she may hate Mildred and act like a hardass around her, but then she turns into such a sweet and silly woman. I’m kind of living for her friendship with Louise, too, although I know it can mean nothing good for Mildred, who doesn’t realize she’s surrounded on all sides. We haven’t even flashed over to Louise rifling in her room during the dance, yet. I wonder what, if anything, she’ll find. But if she does find something, how will Bucket react? I think her opinions of Mildred might have changed after this incident. Speaking of which, while I get what they’re trying to do by having Mildred go all empathetic and feminist, it feels really out of place to me. I know she didn’t expect Hanover to go off like that, but she hardly likes Bucket, and more than that, humiliating and disempowering her would actually serve Mildred’s purposes. Especially if Bucket quit over it. If the whole point of getting them together was to keep Bucket distracted, then surely getting her out of the hospital altogether would be even better. Perhaps I could believe that she saw the opportunity to get on Bucket’s good side by comforting her if it wasn’t so clearly an emotionally-driven choice, and one she was conflicted about. She chose going after Bucket over watching Edmund. That’s a pretty interesting brand of empathy and overconfidence.
On to Edmund, the whole Bonnie-and-Clyde thing was definitely a surprise, but mostly because I’m like...literally what is the plan here? How long do they think they’ll be able to survive on the run? Edmund himself is hard to get a read on, because we don’t get a whole lot from his perspective, but knowing Murphy, I’d wager that he does genuinely have some attachment to Dolly, if only because he’s lacking a sympathetic female figure in his life. He has Mildred of course, but seems very impatient and displeased with her plan and how she tries to control him. I think this whole escape is probably a combination of that frustration and impulsiveness and how he and Dolly really feed off each other’s romanticized idea of how it will all work out. It’ll be interesting to see where they go from here and whether they turn on each other or not. I really still can’t tell whether Edmund is really upset about Gwen being shot or not, but at this point I’m wondering like, why would he need to pretend? Dolly is clearly exhilarated by the whole thing (also unexpected). Their argument is over whether or not Gwen was “fair game,” which sounds to me like Edmund is similar to Mildred in that he really needs a way to justify his murders, which could be interesting, it’s just not the direction I thought we were gonna go with him. We’ll see, I guess!

Fatal Ties: The Ending
As promised, here's the plot bullet-points for the rest of this story so no one is left to wonder. When we left off, the Boss had just been shot at and was going to try figuring out who the mole was, who the perps were, and how to stop them while still going through with the wedding. I hadn't plotted out anything in detail, but here's the things I knew I wanted to put in. Oh, and a flashback that would reveal how the Boss became the Boss.
Tumblr media
Message gets to the Boss to meet with mysterious people who shot at them. The fact there's no demands is fishy, but they go.
They have Kyungsoo hidden away ready to shoot if the meeting goes south. The person who shows up? The Boss' sister. *queue flashback*
(In the edits I was doing the pov changed and the bakery was instead a greenhouse cause I liked the idea that deep down this mafia boss just wanted a quiet life with their plants. So just to avoid confusion this is told from 3rd person pov, and it is indeed showing the day the Boss used a coup against their own father, but it was actually their sister who killed him, and they sent her away under the guise of protection. In truth the Boss pinned the murder on the sister and took over the business.)
They were standing in a vast, gleaming greenhouse awash with sunlight. Two rows of various plants and flowers grew on tables, leaves dancing in their warm glow. Two people stood in the center as they spoke alone. One of them carried an overwhelming sense of authority and sharpness. Wearing a pressed black suit and severe eyes. The other, with broad shoulders, looked right at home beside them.
There was something odd about the image, however. The emotions of the moment eclipsed details; softening and flooding out the edges with blotted blurs. The surroundings bent toward the two figures slightly, revolving around them, existing by extension.
A bright and fierce feeling consumed them. It beckoned they straighten their back. It filled them with elation and confidence.
The breeze sung, warmth and sweetness tickling their nose with a few wisps of hair. Distant concussions rang in their ears. That of hand-made rhythms and automatic syncopation like a crackling symphony. Fingers flinched by their hip, joints aching to grasp long awaited vindication.
A smile slid into place on the one with broad shoulders. Something older and deeper than amusement. It had the appearance of affection, but it was dangerous; too sunken and tight. "This is my kingdom," he said. "None of this would exist without me. Some delusional little girl won't change that."
"A kingdom is more than one person," they remarked, a sneer curling their upper lip. "You're not thinking."
"Am I now?" he marveled, teeth flashing. "You've spent your whole life trying to make me proud. Now you're going to give everything up for some petty cash?"
"Someone is."
"We could do that," he replied, stuffing his hands in his pockets. "Or you could stay here while I go clean up the mess inside, and every time you lay down in the bed I bought, under the roof I earned, you'll rest peacefully, remembering when you chose to walk away."
"Just like some mindless, obedient bitch, right? Why would I go back to that?"
"Some paths are less traveled for a reason."
The air stretched, a tethered tension consuming the room. It seeped into their chest. The words agonized and twisted their thoughts into turmoil, but more than that, it galvanized their wounds. Defenses dissolved into truth. Their face went eerily blank, poised for one direction or the other. Weighing the words against their knowledge. On the cusp of their vision, a shape came with the wind that made the leaves tremble.
Clasping metal, their hand raised, and a gunshot shattered the air. Three heartbeats, then a dull thud and a crack. The sound resonated throughout the new space created; striking the emptiness from their gaze. As they looked down at the man collapsed on the concrete their eyes blazed. Watching him attempt in vain to put pressure over the hole in his chest, mouth gaping open and shut with no utterance. The bullet had hit just under his clavicle.
The color was ripped from his face. As seconds passed his brows set into a hard line, glowering up at what must have been just shapes and bright lights. Slipping into shock and the blissful numbness.
And their veins were white hot. Seething scars lurked in the tremor of their hands. Their knees hit concrete, fingers twirling the barrel of the gun into their palm, and rammed the blunt end down onto his forehead.
A fissure opened in his flesh. Hazed hatred in hard eyes and harder hands, his bloodied fist cloyed upward. Treachery painted their neck, warm and slick, and their insides revolted.
They brought the corner of the grip down once more, grunting with the force of it. That time a wet crackle was heard, tissue and marrow and matter opening like a rift in the earth. His eyes dimmed and shut. Fingers fell limp. Then they brought the gun to his face again, and again, and again. Beating, breaking until all the scars were his and retribution stained their very self, pooling around their knees.
They were left with shivering leaves and limbs, metal clattering to concrete. For a few moments, they thought they could feel everything. Beneath, the ground itself breathed with them. The immeasurable magnitude of their actions soaked the air; acid in their lungs. Stinging, shallow flexes damming their thoughts. The image of his bloodied skull battered and branded into their memory; proof he would no longer torment.
"We have to go." A set of shoes stepped in to view. Welcomed into the washed-out greenhouse; making it sharper.
Their gun was picked up. Then a gentle hand rested on their arm. The light straightened and the emotions drained; a hollowness haunting their eyes.
"Come on," the voice urged softly. "I'll take you out of here for a bit. What's that place you always talk about going to? The one in the mountains. We'll lay low there for a bit, and when we come back everything will be like it should. They know what to do."
It was a trusted sound, the promise of better circumstances. It had to be, coming from the one who had been bound for so long; now unbound and free to bind. The vindication was theirs to share. So they swallowed the bile and butterflies, and took the hand on their arm. Bundled in familiar security, warm with such flattering certainty. There would be no leaving the stranger path.
This little exchange (starting with the sister speaking) during the reunion that would confirm what happened in the flashback:
"At least I killed him on purpose. You're a glorified accountant. Dad would've squashed your guts like an ant. If I'm appalled with what you've become, he's rolling over in his grave."
"As long as he stays there then I don't fucking care."
The meeting basically just confirms all the "who's" and "why's" but not the "how". Sister who wants the business for herself, therefore stopping the truce by getting revenge on the Boss is top on her list.
Some more reconnecting, tied together by a homophobic dad. Then this schpeel by the sister as well for more context.
"I was cursed from birth, just like you. The daughter of a mafioso. There's a mark on my head always. Police want to lock me up, criminals want to use me to prove themselves to their own shitbeat dads, regular people are scared shitless they'll be arrested just for talking to me. You weren't protecting me! You threw me to the wolves! My own sibling..."
"The world took everything from me! Don-"
"No! You did that! You took everything, killing anyone who didn't agree with your grand vision!"
Hadn't decided how the Boss would get out of the meeting, but basically the tension would build cause now you realize the Boss hasn't done much actual killing themselves. But the sister? She' killed her family before; what's stopping her from doing it again now?
More bonding with Baekhyun. Teaching him things. Maybe try and get him to kill someone to prove himself, but he can't go through with it.
Boss is in the greenhouse the morning of the wedding, but Baekhyun is also there, and with a gun to his head, kneeling. Boss of course then pulls their gun on the person threatening their fiancé which is the sister. Then maybe this interaction (starting with the sister speaking.)
"Look at you, so proud to kill me. About to be the big boss who saves the day. Protecting everyone with this fucking contract and this ridiculous fucking sham wedding. You think this'll make things right? Just like killing our fucking dad and throwing me out was right because you "saved" the business? Because you were "protecting" me? There's no redemption for someone like you. No happy, fairytale retirement ending. I'll just be another body you leave behind. Go on, finish me. Send my body to Junmyeon and scatter me to the wind, but it won't change what you are."
Lots of twisted emotions, Boss on the verge of tears.
"...I miss my old sister."
"Of course you do," the Boss replied. "They were much more trusting and naive. Easier to kill."
"What happened to your ruthless energy? You used to have real ambition for this company. Now you want to play cottage lesbian with this dipshit?" A pause. "I'm tired of this bluff. Kyungsoo?"
Kyungsoo appears and restrains the Boss, taking their gun away and maybe holding a knife to their throat, voice in their ear.
"Be a good kitten and shut your mouth, huh? You had your chance." He turns to the sister. "Trade you for the dipshit."
Sister laughs. "He's all yours, love."
Kyungsoo was the mole. Twisty, yes? The irony being the Boss was worried Baekhyun was the honeypot, when Kyungsoo had been all along. Well, from when he actually started sleeping with them. He tried to get the Boss to change their ways, and when they didn't, the sister gave up and and gave in to vengeance.
As Kyungsoo trades, Baekhyun steals a gun from Kyungsoo's holster, presses it to his chest, and pulls the trigger. His first kill.
The Boss uses the distraction to kill their sister. Their final violent act. Both of them standing amidst the blood.
The truce is made, the Boss gets married, and both their souls are now corrupted and damned.
Hadn't totally decided, but if I were to lean toward a happier ending then the Boss would've raised up one of the others (probably Jongdae) to be the new boss, and they'd prove their sister wrong by retiring with Baekhyun to a small house with a garden. Well, they weren't totally happy after everything they'd been through, but they were content.

                                     BLAST002: PARTY RECAP EDITION 2.0
looks like this party sure was a cautionary tale ! over the weekend, some were feeling oh-so pretty ( and gay ) while others were falling totally stupid in love… something’s coming, and it’ll have you seeing stars ! eat a cracker and stop by to read the latest scoop on CADY AND MARIA’S PARTY ! if you’re fearless, look beneath the cut for all the drama that happened tonight, tonight…
first off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY to our lovely ladies, CADY and MARIA ! we heard that the homeschooled jungle freak got w a y too tipsy  and made out with little LES… we wonder what her “ boyfriend “ thought about that… or does he not really care ? perhaps JD still has a bit of VERONICA stuck on his mind. either way, we don’t trust the guy. jd and cady might have made up and locked lips once again… but how long will that last ?
and lets talk about our other birthday girl. seems like MARIA finally got the nerve to ask out her not so secret crush TONY – and with her brother and ex-crush breathing down her neck. do we think it’ll last, though ? those lovebirds wouldn’t know the concept of “ taking it slow “ even if it smacked ‘em right in the face ! though we couldn’t help but have our eyes fixed on TONY and VIVIENNE… what is going on there ? are we delusional, or do those two get along really well ? should MARIA and WES be aware of that little dynamic ?
now we are still on the subject of birthday gals –  what about the soon to be celebrated WENDY BIRD ? just because it wasn’t her party, didn’t mean she had to ditch – and to get high with no one than CLAUDE, no less. talking about a bad influence… a little birdie told me he recited poetry to her, too. how romantic. i wonder whether RIFF ever talks to her like that…
and talking about the fearless jets leader. showing up to help out little miss sunshine ELLE who was once again crying over WESLEY and VIVIENNE kissing which resulted in yet another argument between the two lawyers… and all over that same boy. again. boo-hoo, tough life much ? maybe next time she should bring bruiser – i am sure that little guy could get a taste for her ex’s ankles… or perhaps she could have wood another guy into taking her home. RIFF took his high as a kite bird, but TONY or JACK might be easily convinced.
but let’s move on to something more exciting: give it up for our favorite lesbian, WEDNESDAY, finally coming out and proud at last – just in time for the end of pride month ! i mean literally… can i give that hottie a hand ? we are proud of you, boo boo.
CLAUDE got his flirt on with MAUREEN ( who on her turn got a bit flirty with TONY ), again, but after her k i l l e r karaoke performance, our favorite minx went home with MORITZ. did CLAUDE really just let a good one go ? maybe her new boy-toy will impress with his “ talents “ for a bit longer !
moving on to the next topic: the NEWSIES. it looks our newspaper squad stuck together too, with SARAH helping a drunken KAT and SPOT trying yet again to win DAVEY over ! a wholesome crew, you say ? you just wait… there is more. and it’s juicy.
rumor has it that KAT got some loose lips on her, going off and telling JACK that their relationship was never gonna work ( are we surprised ). but it seems that our lil’ JACKIE BOY doesn’t go down without a fight ( again, are we surprised ) and took that passion to kiss the hell outta her ! our baby reporter is gonna have a hard time trying to hide her feelings now. game, set…
and since we mentioned JACK – seems like the guy got his flirt on again. KAT might have to put in some real effort if she doesn’t want to lose her shot… i noticed a certain BETTY RIZZO getting his interest. our birthday girl CADY seemed to not mind his presence either – i heard that by the end of the night, he was pouring the alcohol straight from the bottle.
also MINA didn’t seem to mind being left behind: she still got down on the dance floor with MELCHIOR, as if their hookup totally didn’t matter ! or did we completely mistake MINA kissing MARK there… not sure about y’all, but we better see that girl tie him down before he goes running back to AMBER.
talking about our little princess AMBER. i witnessed with my own eyes how she got buzzed and tipsy all too fast and ended up trading kisses with a few exes ! JESSE sure didn’t seem to mind – even though he came with MINA but went off to flirt with ANNA A halfway through the night. that boy sure did not take it easy… maybe these gals were not quite royal enough for his liking. might there be something growing there, ANNA A ? love, at last ?
and what about ANNABETH. the not-so-little thing must not have known what hit her – poor PERCY and LYDIA attempted a little flirting, but to no avail. will that girl ever get her nose out of her damn book and see the romance right in front of her ? luckily, ANNABETH has seemingly found a new friend in ANNA B. bad bitches have to stick together, am i right ? EVELYN could have been a nice addition to that, but her stone cold type of bitch got in the way again… are we the only one wondering why ETHAN keeps trying with her ? or was that not him talking her up again ? that’s what we thought…
but lets get back to love triangles… how is it that PEDRO keeps getting trapped in the middle of those ? while totally u s i n g GABRIELLA to get over his little birdie ( have a type much, pete ? ), mister ex-boyfriend TROY sure wasn’t too happy about it… you can bet on that ! we spied with our little eye how he was getting drunk early on in the night with no other than JUDAH and boy, did he end up losing his cool at his ex-girlfriend. think GABRIELLA will want him back now ? if they aren’t feeling a headache coming up, i sure am…
speaking of couples that seem to be in trouble: who could have seen the JUDAH and LINK hook-up coming ? sure, we could spot the passion from a mile away – and we could hear them arguing from even further ! but hey – unexpected or not, who really minds two hot boys getting it going… you’re right, not us.
and what is up with MEG and JAMIE WELLERSTEIN… people have reported the brunette to be quite flirtatious that night. and with JAMIE, out of all people ? did not think we would ever say that, but that is a dynamic we will be keeping our eyes on…
a party also would not be a party if there wasn’t some major “ drama “, right ? let us begin with our big bad shark leader BERNARDO – first a confrontation with his little sister’s lover-to-be ex-jet TONY only to go through yet another break-up with ANITA. quite the eventful night for you, huh, nardo… remind us, how many times have ANITA and BERNARDO broken up by now ? is anyone still keeping count ? and what about PEDRO and THERESA ? seems like our little fairy is throwing tantrums again… getting cozy with PEDRO, kissing JOHN, only to get jealous at PEDRO again… what’s up with that, THERESA ? indecisive much ? no wonder WENDY and her suddenly get along – these two aren’t all that different after all.
talking about JOHN – one darling boy sure did have a great night, huh ? dancing with THERESA after all, flirting with ALIZ, kissing CHINO… not to shabby for a guy who is locked up behind his desk most of the time. you go, dude ! though ALIZ didn’t only get her flirt on with john: the party-planner slash club-owner did not only strike a business deal with LILY, she seemed to get quite cosy with HERO once again. what is going on there ? and are we the only ones who noticed HERO juggling not only aliz but also MEG ? we knew he was an athlete, but not that he’s a player ( see what we did there ? ).
to end on a high note ( literally ), are we the only ones kind of excited by RYAN EVANS’ marvelous appearance – solo and all. sure head bitch SHARPAY will be on cloud nine. and what about that a d o r a b l e reunion between ILSE and her friends – talking about wholesome reunions, right ? guess it wasn’t all bad news that night !

[1] Hey Tumblr, we gotta talk.
...
...
...
Oh shit yeah, why do we have to talk?
Tumblr media
Because I just read two books (essentially back to back) that I need to express so much about.
Okay, so this is the Nemesis series... which I essentially just call Dreadnought.
[Warning: This post contains spoilers, lots of feeling sharing, talk of abuse, and rambling]
ANYWAY.
This is the story of Danielle Tozer, a transgirl who just really wants to live her life. The issues though, man: she’s 15, her family’s very clearly not supportive when they find out, she has superpowers.
Oh right, missed a step.      In the world of Dreadnought, superpowers are increasingly common. And... it’s kinda to the point that seeing a superhero fight is mundane.
“Oh. Great. A superhero fight. Just friggen’ wonderful.”
She happens to come across a dying hero (Dreadnought), who is basically the All Might of this world, who grants her all of his superpowers. One of those superpowers? Making you your ideal self. And from here, Danny becomes a Victoria Secret model.
...no, really:
“No. I mean, why I look this way. Mom took me to a fancy bra store the other day, and there were posters everywhere of these women that, well, nobody looks like that in real life, right?”
“Except you, and a few genetic lottery winners.”
“Yeah. So my ideal self—” Doc Impossible chuckles. “Is a photoshopped underwear model, I see.”
And you know what? I get that. I absolutely agree, I fucking wish I was that attractive. ...but I digress. Honestly? No. I'm not digressing. In fact, this is literally why I’m writing this psuedo-essay/rant nonsense.
More on that later.
 ...
So right, Danny is a transgender superhero that’s... a fucking lesbian, really attractive, and a complete badass:
"My palms light up with scalding agony, but what hurts for me is torture for him, his whole body convulsing as the energy is reflected back into his skull."
[2] Danny Tozer can’t fucking catch a break for more than two god damn seconds.
Directly out of her getting her body magically slapped into alignment,  she has to return home since it’s late-o-clock. What do we know about Danny’s home life at this point? Well, she’s not out to her parents.
"Obviously I can’t tell anyone about this. If it got back to Dad, he’d kill me.
He’s obsessed with “making a good man” out of me. “You’re a man now,” he says as his justification for friggin’ everything."
So, not a great picture of what might happen next-- Danny arrives home finally, and has to convince her parents she is… well, the same person. (allegories, there ye be)
"My father’s eyes get wide. His face goes the color of spoiled milk. “What did you do?” he asks, quietly enough to scare me."
And this, this right here cemented my interest in this story.
Danny’s scared of her Dad. Earlier, she expressed concern, specifically: ”If [my dad] found out I might be a girl... well, I don’t really want to think about what might happen”. At this point, she’s more scared than she’s ever been in her life. Her greatest fear is happening right now, and all she can do is twist the narrative into an unsaid apology. Danny wants to keep the peace, it’s what she’s done for seven years of her life. So she hides that she’s happy like this. And dad starts pushing to find a solution to this. And mom starts being a little supportive from time to time. Etc, etc, clearly they get their shit together and bang, happy ending.
lol jk this is DREADNOUGHT people, nope, that is not what happens.
Yes: great, her mom does start to seem supportive. She buys Danny some bras, cute flats, and even starts to bond with her daughter. It’s some heart-warming, regular shit we’ve all dreamed of getting to do. (but it never did, did it?)
Her Dad forbids her from going to school since he wants to hide the whole.. “my son turned into a girl” thing. So, like any good kid, Danny goes the fuck to school. And there… she loses a friend.
So her best friend, David, turns out to be the shining example of a “nice guy”. Danny’s a pretty girl now, why can’t she just date him? He just wants to try. All he does is stare at her tits, but wow, doesn’t he deserve a shot?
Yeah, fuck you David.     He gets rejected and calls Danny a “stuck-up bitch”. Real great guy.
Straight out of realizing her ‘best friend’ was a sniveling incel, Danny outs herself to her parents. And then her Dad goes... nuclear.
(you may not want to read the next section if you’ve had abusive parents)
"He tells me I’m stupid. That I’m not thinking big picture. That nobody will respect me while I look like a freak. That he only wants what is best for me but I’m screwing it all up.
He says I’ve damaged my reputation, that nobody will take me seriously now.
He demands to know why I don’t have the good sense to be ashamed of what happened to me, but doesn’t wait for an answer before saying I’ve embarrassed them all. He says I’m pathetic, that I’m delusional, that I’m sick.
He suggests I might be a pervert, and that he—generous, caring, and steadfast as he is—might have to fight to keep me off the sex offender list for using the girls’ bathroom.
He tells me I’m disloyal, that I’m a bad son, that I’m selfish and disgusting. He tells me I’m weak, and gross, and that I have no moral fiber.
He says he’s never been so ashamed of me, and then he goes on to emphasize how low that is, given all the other times I’ve shamed him. He says all of this at a volume to shake the rafters.
When I start to cry he calls me a sniveling pussy and says he’s glad his father is dead so he never had to see what a failure I am.
I suck it up fast, force the tears back as quick as I can, because I know the longer I cry the worse it will get."
Yes, I felt it was necessary to make you read this huge chunk of screen real-estate.
This, this is something that I know all too well of.
Danny’s father is a selfish, unloving cunt. Full stop.
And her mom? God, her mom doesn’t even watch. We know that this kind of talk isn’t the first of its kind. And then Danny... just takes it. It all gets to her, every single word. She thinks of herself as “a worthless, stupid, disgusting little freak”. She’s straight up sobbing in her bed after all of this, trying to keep quiet so her dad doesn’t yell again.
She (effectively) loses everyone who she thought cared for her in one day. Damn.
Yeah, your typical superhero origin story. Totally.
Have I mentioned I relate to Danny so fucking hard?
Now, honestly? I had to put the book down at this point. It hit in all the sore spots, those points of trauma that’ll probably be here for the rest of my life.
What’s described here is the visceral reality of having abusive parents. The scars it leaves, the feeling of helplessness... enough to bring you back to it. And this, this particular flavor of helplessness, is something I have not seen in media before.
I don’t want to spoil much further, these are all thoughts from the first book, and I encourage you to read it yourself. If you thought any of this was interesting or resonated with you, pick up a copy of Dreadnought and give it a good look over.
(i might write more about this book eventually, might even touch upon the superhero parts :p)

October Day 22: Madame Mirage
She crazy and heckin evil, but I kinda love her as a character Also I'm proud of her dress design, she legit looks like a magical girl
Name: Ilene Wilkes, has an alias called "Madame Mirage" Age: 16 Personality: Childish, mischievous and malicious, sees everything and everyone as a potential toy. Doesn’t care about rules, boundaries, or others’ feelings, especially if she deems them to be boring. Hates being talked down to or restricted by authority. Backstory: Her mother either died, or left when she was an infant, leaving Ilene with her abusive, alcoholic, and delusional father. For all her childhood, she was locked away indoors, beaten, and called a freak due to her magic. This was made worse by the fact that Ilene would inadvertently give him horrendous and vivid nightmares, driving her father towards insanity and neglect. She eventually began to learn how to control her abilities so she could sneak out into the slums in order to find food, since her father spent most of his money on booze. Though she quickly learned that other people could be just as nasty and sleazy, developing a hatred for people in general. One day, after a particularly bad day of being beaten and abused, she decided she had enough, and induced the worst visions, sensations, and pain she could imagine upon her father, and accidentally discovered that some of her illusions were powerful enough to affect reality. Using this new discovery, she killed her father, and ran away from home. From then on, she became a feared criminal, adopting the alias “Madame Mirage,” and used her powers to terrorize numerous people, and always seemed to slip right out of reach of the authorities. Eventually, she became too cocky, and was apprehended, being sent to juvenile detention. Though she wasn’t kept behind bars for long, as she managed to escape only a year after her arrest. She made her way over to Ombra Nera, where she hides by the edge of town within the surrounding forest, lying low until she can find an opportunity to strike again. Other: Her magic consists of illusionary powers, telepathic/mind control powers that allows her to make others see and feel things that aren’t there, and mild psionic abilities that sometimes can make her illusions real for a split second, to cause real damage or move objects. She is very attracted to females, especially those who are likeminded and crazy, to the point where she believes she’s a lesbian. Though she can find herself to be attracted to some males if they manage to break through her negative stigmas and beliefs about men.

Could you do a queer analysis of Getaway Car? I'm curious about your opinion. For me it's the most difficult to interpret from reputation. Some think it's swiftgron, other that it's about CH/TS. I think it's about bearding in general. The 1st part about CH/TS "worst of crimes" = the longest beard. But then it sounds like 2014 kaylor (not bearding) and kissgate "It was the great escape, the prison break The light of freedom on my face But you weren’t thinkin’ And I was just drinkin'" Thank you!
Hi everyone and happySunday!
Out of all the songson Reputation Getaway Car is one ofthe most popular, but as anon says it seems to be the one we as a fandom havethe most difficulty agreeing on what or who it’s actually about.
Some are thinking Dianna andSwiftgron, while others, like anon here are thinking bearding (andoften specifically CH or TH)
Personally I tend tofall into the Swiftgron camp, I think the song is about the ending of Taylorand Dianna’s relationship and how close they came to actually picking eachother over their careers (aka escaping the industry, with its systematichomophobia and bearding practices.) Here’s a Swiftgron master post for ahelpful timeline that brings up/explains stuff about the relationship I maymention in the analysis below.
Since it is one ofthe most complex and narratively interesting songs on the newest album it hasbeen heavily analyzed already (the analyses linked above are both excellent andprovided a lot of inspiration for this analysis) but I decided to put it on mylist anyway. I hope I can give you a satisfying and while perhaps not all thatrefreshing, at the very least interesting take on the lyrics.
Before we actuallystart looking at them I’d like to share some of my general thoughts on the song.
We all know Taylor isa brilliant singer and a wonderful songwriter, but what first drew me, a loverof stories to her music was the fact that first and foremost Taylor is astoryteller. From start to finish GetawayCar is a story and a complex one in ways that we’ll get into as thisanalysis progresses.
Taylor has picked (apossibly crime-fueled) road trip sort of theme (no, not THAT road trip) for thestory she wants to tell.
On the surface thesong chronicles the fate of two lovers on some sort of crime spree, or at leaston a road trip escaping their everyday lives in order to be together far awayfrom it all…Sounds familiar as far as lesbian fiction goes, wouldn’t you say?Someone knows their queer pop culture, nice one, Tay!
Unlike the semi-happyending of Carol or the sad andupsetting one of lesbian Bonnie and Clyde(or you know, straight Bonnie and Clyde too, actually) though, it doesn’tend with one of them dying.
Instead it all endswith one of them betraying the other and escaping with their stolen goodsleaving their partner to take the fall and presumably be arrested.
It is fairly easy toconclude that this plot is not to be taken as autobiographical, obviouslyTaylor didn’t rob a bank with a past lover, but she might’ve done somethingthat betrayed said lover’s trust and when writing a song about the incident sheused this escaping-the-law-thing as a metaphor for what actually happened inher own relationship. I think you’re all with me so far, but how do we connectthe story being told here to Swiftgron? Well, let’s look at it and see.
Oh, but also, beforeI forget, my usual disclaimers:
This is just mespeculating, I could be extremely wrong and everyone is free to speculate asmuch as they want on what this lyrical masterpiece is about.
Lyrics cred goes toAZLyrics yet again.
Now let’s start theactual analysis!
No, nothing good starts in a getaway car…
It’s been reported that Dianna actually proposed toTaylor as a sort of last, desperate attempt to save their relationship. After gettingback together yet again and enduring months and months of back and forth Diannasupposedly threw the idea of marriage out there and Taylor, forced to berealistic about her career and her life in general had to say no, thus endingthe relationship. I assume though, that Taylor didn’t say no immediately, atfirst she considered what would happen if she said yes.
Well, for starters it’d be the end of all the bearding, she could escape that part of her life if she actually came out, but it alsomost likely meant that she’d have to give up her career (at least mainstream,big-time success…cuz ew, homophobia.)
She considered it however, for a moment she consideredgetting into that getaway car Dianna was providing and just drive away from itall, all the fame and the fake PR games (LuckyOne vibes, anyone?) in order to be with her girlfriend, but then sheactually truly started thinking about it and realized that for this to workthey’d have to pull off something akin to a freaking heist.
Their coming out process would be complicated andwould most likely hurt both of their images considerably + both of theirmanagements at the time seems to have been pretty pro-closet, so coming outwould be challenge and a risky one at that.
If they’d actually be able to pull that off their marriage(and by association the rest of their lives together) would start in the dustof their public come out and all the drama that’d come with that.
Taylor fearedtheir (already rocky) relationship wasn’t strong enough to survive the public’sreaction to them coming out and getting married. In addition to that theirmarriage would’ve been born out of frustration, they’d both just about had itwith the closeting process and the PR games in their respective industries and+ they wanted to save their relationship which was rapidly falling apart, perhaps not only due to both of thembeing forcibly closeted, but I’m sure that didn’t…you know, help.
A marriage built from a combination of thosecircumstances doesn’t strike me as one that will last and Taylor seems to havecome to the same conclusion. (A reoccurring theme in her songs for Dianna is agut feeling or a knowledge that no matter how much they want to, they won’tlast forever) so she decides that they shouldn’t get married, shouldn’t try toescape their miserable, straight-passing PR lives this way because the marriagethat would come from that wouldn’t be a strong and enduring one.
After all nothing good starts in a getaway car, orfrom a need escape something (bearding) while holding onto something else (afailing relationship) that very clearly won’t last.
Criminals trying to escape the law will get caughtsooner or later and two closeted women won’t be able to be together without PRdrama if they don’t come out. In both cases it is pointless to try and escapethe inevitable (capture by police, or putting the crime metaphor aside, eventual outing) and if they do manage to put these things off it’s onlytemporary and not the foundation for something lasting or good.
It was the best of times, the worst of crimes
Generally Taylor seemed quite happy in herrelationship with Dianna, but their relationship was also torrid and prettydramatic and in Wonderland shedescribes it as “Never worse, but neverbetter” and what’s happening here seems to be similar. Taylor is happy andin love, having the best time, but just being happy and in love with another woman is basicallyconsidered a crime in her line of work. Homosexuality is insanely taboo in theentertainment industry, as a celebrity it seems to be just about the worstthing you can do (unless you’re already out at the start of your career andthus marketed as a gaysinger/actor/performer.)
So while Taylor was happy and in love she was alsoaware that the general public would judge her harshly if they found out she’sgay, in their eyes that’d be a betrayal of trust since she’d “lied” to themabout being straight, she might as well have murdered a man (aka committed acrime) as far as the hets are concerned.
Also as we knowin many parts of the world being gay IS in fact a literal crime, it’s evenconsidered so bad you could get death penalty for it in multiple countries. While that’s (thankfully) not the case in the U.S “the worst of crimes” seems afitting way to describe that atrocity that’s a reality for many LGBT+ peopleelsewhere. I hate this world with a burning passion!
…Okaaaaay,let’s not talk about that anymore… 🤮🤮🤮
I struck a match and blew your mind
But I didn’t mean it
And you didn’t see it
Matches are a recurring motif in many Taylor songs (atthe top of my head I can think of PictureTo Burn and Dear John) and mostoften they seem to signify ending a relationship or getting over someone.
Here they seem to allude to Taylor trying and failingto convince a proposing Dianna (and herself) that she couldn’t say yes and thatthey’d have to break up.
Dianna had been so desperate to save theirrelationship and so convinced Taylor felt the same desperation and thereforewould say yes that she wasn’t ready to get any other answer. When Taylorstarted explaining why saying yes wasn’t realistic (or “struck the match” aka essentially broke up) it blew Dianna’s mind,it wasn’t at all the response she’d expected as she’d convinced herself thatgetting married was the logical next step since they didn’t want to lose eachother.
Taylor wanted to be able to say yes, she wanted tobelieve their dysfunctional relationship could still be saved. So when sheresponded to the proposal she didn’t want to believe what she heard herself say,it’s not what she wanted to say (“I didn’t mean it”) and Dianna refusedto admit Tay was right. (“You didn’t seeit” “it” being the truth of their doomed love.) They were both clinging to an already lost hope, much like twodelusional criminals thinking they will be able to escape police forever.
The ties were black, the lies were white
In shades of gray and candlelight
Black ties makes one think of formal events orcorporate business dealings, kind of like how Taylor’s hetero relationships arenothing but business and how they  tellwhite little lies in order to sell the hetero story like the business deal itis. (“they” in this context being Team Taylor, but also Dianna’s team sincethey seem to employ much of the same techniques to keep the girls closeted, orat least they did before Taylor got rid of her old publicist and hired Tree.)
The mentions of black and white also makes me think ofhow all Taylor’s bearding relationships seem almost painfully simplistic, theyare either in love or they aren’t, it’s all the tired fairy-tale view of lovewith the prince and princess (code word for “straight woman” in much of Taylor’smusic, remember?) It’s all very black and white, much like black ties and whitelies. This PR-version of love is put in opposition to Taylor’s actual (gay)love life where everything is more complicated and realistic. For example twopeople who still love each other might have to break up, because their lovesimply isn’t enough to keep them together anymore. In other words, in this realversion of Taylor Swift’s love life everything doesn’t always work out so Disney-like, it’s often more complicated(and less straight) than the black and white narrative of her public lovelife.  (“Shades of grey”) but stillromantic most of the time (“candle light.”)
“Shades of grey” could of course also be a referenceto the Fifty Shades Of Grey series ofbooks/movies, a primary example of something that a vast majority of peopleseem to consider romantic when it actually is quite abusive and gross (x)rather like the structures keeping someone in a straight PR-relationship thatfronts a false sense of perfect and desirable romance while the reality of thatrelationship is something else entirely. 🤔
Yes, I do know Taylor wrote a song for one of the 50 Shades movies so maybe she likes themand does consider them romantic (or it was just an attempt to make her publicpersona edgier in preparation for Reputationand the “death of the old Taylor”) but as a self-proclaimed feminist (and avery smart woman) I have a hard time believing the abusive, patriarchal andheteronormative implications of those books/films got past Taylor.
In my opinion she might’ve drawn a pretty cleverparallel between the romanticized but clearly problematic relationship depictedin Fifty Shades   and the romanticizing of her own publicrelationships that are as shallow and void of any deeper substance as thewriting and story in those novels. This is very clearly a reach and I don’t pretend toknow anything of Taylor’s taste in literature, but I thought it was kind offunny to be honest. 😂
Iwanted to leave him
I needed a reason
Who is this “him”? Well, it could either be her beard(most likely Harry Styles if this was back in the Swiftgron days) or thebearding/entertainment industry as a whole. It seems that by the time she metDianna Taylor was tired of hiding and bearding and by now it seems she mostcertainly is. In previous analyses we’ve touched on the idea that many gaycelebrities are forced to choose between a fulfilling personal life and asuccessful career and this song isn’t the first time Taylor’s flirted with theidea of picking the former. (Lucky One)However, at that point in her career she felt she couldn’t just up and leavewithout giving her fans and explanation and coming out and getting married to awoman seemed reason enough. She wants out of the bearding system, so thereforeit’s tempting to say yes to the proposal even though she knows it most likelywon’t work out.
X marks the spot, where we fell apart
This is probably just a reference to one of Taylor’sfavorite songs by Hilary Duff, BreatheIn, Breathe out (x) but it could alsobe a reference to bearding being what made Swiftgron fall apart.
Often in bearding and PR relationship contracts areinvolved (See: Blank Space) and mostoften legal documents such as contracts are signed with a person’s signature, but sometimes they are signed with simple x’s.Admittedly that’s most often when a party is unable to provide their written signaturefor one reason or another, but this may be the safest way to hint atcontract-signing in the song without flat-out saying it. With this in mind Taylorcould be saying that putting an x on(or signing) all of those contracts and agreeing to “play straight” as much asboth women were doing put a strain on their relationship and led to its demise.
He poisoned the well, I was lying to myself
To “poison the well” means to discredit someone’sargument or point. Once again “he” makes an appearance and like I said I think“he” represents the bearding practice as a whole, or possibly the girls’publicists or PR teams. Their previous history with bearding andstraight-passing had poisoned the well in the sense that they’d make coming outa challenge. Everyone assumes both girls to be straight so were they tosuddenly claim to be gay everyone would try to disprove this with references totheir previous history with dating and they’d have no way to dismiss thiswithout admitting to bearding which would frankly probably be a PR disaster.Taylor’s saying that if she tried to convince herself that they could getmarried and then come out without major complications she was lying to herself, she wouldn’t be able to leave “him” as easily as Dianna was trying to convinceher and deep down Taylor knew this even if she didn’t want to believe it.Simply put, Taylor was lying to herself by thinking coming out would bepossible, let alone easy.
I knew it from the first old fashioned, we were cursed
So, an old fashioned is a kind of drink and maybe thatdrink holds a special meaning in relation to Taylor and Dianna’s relationship?Obviously I wouldn’t know, instead I’m thinking that it might be yet anotherreference to bearding.
After all that’s pretty much a tale as old as time,it’s been going on in Hollywood since day one, quite old fashioned if you askme. Perhaps Taylor is saying she knew as soon as she started bearding that herreal relationships would be hard to make work while pretending to be hetero. Iimagine her and Dianna’s relationship were no different given that both womenare quite famous for bearding.
This could’ve been a factor in Taylor’s aforementionedgut feeling that they wouldn’t last, if we’re to trust I Knew You Were Trouble she had that feeling of eventual doom even inthe early days of their relationship and the fact that they both bearded a lotmight have been a contributing factor to this.
We never had a shotgun shot in the dark
This is clearly a reference to the wedding they neverhad. A “shotgun wedding” is a hasty and rushed one. A wedding that’s takingplace as a last effort to save a failing relationship through one lastdesperate, but still grand, romantic gesture seems pretty rushed and hasty tome, rather like the wedding Swiftgron would’ve had if Taylor had agreed to theproposal. *heartbreak*
You were driving the getaway car
We were flying, but we’d never get far
Through proposing Dianna provided a escape frombearding for both herself and Taylor, a getaway car if you will. Whileconsidering this possible plan of escape both girls could taste the freedomthey’d been denied for so long by being forced to stay in the closet. They werehappy and excited (“flying”)  that they’dfound a way to both save their relationship AND get out of tedious glass closetroutines, but pretty soon they (or at least Taylor) realized the plan wouldn’twork, their getaway car (or marriage) wouldn’t get far.
Don’t pretend it’s such a mystery
Think about the place where you first met me
Dianna shouldn’t be shocked Taylor isn’t ready to comeout the singer reasons, after all they first met while they were both deeply inthe closet. I mean this line might hold a more obvious significance to Taylorand Dianna as they alone know the details of their meet-cute, but all I canthink about is that the place they first met technically was the closet.Neither of them should be surprised (or “act like it’s such a mystery”) thatthe other won’t come out, after all they knew what they were getting themselvesinto when they first met as they were aware the other was very closeted.
We’re riding in a getaway car
There were sirens in the beat of your heart
If we’re going with the story of the outlaws on therun the sirens are quite obviously the police chasing them, the cops are closingin on them, threatening to end their little crime-spree fantasy. In the contextof the song’s queer meaning however it might mean something entirely different. In Greek mythology a siren is a sea creature, a beautiful woman who luressailors to their deaths in the ocean by seducing the men with their beauty. Sothe sirens beauty and grace tricked the men into doing something unwise ordangerous, huh? Sounds like a beautiful woman luring Taylor Swift away from hercareer with promises of happily ever after and beautiful words she wants tohear…Of course Taylor couldn’t be like “you’re a siren, luring me into yourgetaway car” so she had to use the Bonnie and Clyde narrative so that we’dthink about a police siren, not like, a freaking mermaid seducing our singerinto their getaway vehicle. 😂
Should’ve known I’d be the first to leave
Think about the place where you first met me
In a getaway car
No, they never get far
No, nothing good starts in a getaway car
Yet again Taylor’s saying Dianna shouldn’t besurprised Taylor won’t come out and at the first sign of breaking the glasscloset Taylor would leave.  Why? Well, before I suggested the getaway car might be a metaphor for Swiftgron’spotential marriage and how it “wouldn’t get far” the use of that metaphor herethough suggests to me that the getaway car is in fact their entirerelationship. They got into this relationship because they wanted to live theirtruths, at least privately, they wanted to have someone to come home to whenthe bearding was over for the day, they wanted true love, not just thefabricated bearding kind. Their relationship was a way to escape from theirhetero narrative, a getaway car. Keeping a relationship working while havingfake relationship with third-parties must be hard though and that’s why gayrelationships seldom work out for closeted celebs (at least in Taylor’sexperience it would seem) the attempt to escape their straight narratives neverget far. Furthermore having to live and love in secrecy doesn’t give therelationship a stable foundation, nothing good starts with an attempt to fleefrom something else.
Wow, Getaway Caris quite the bleak look at the price of fame for someone in the closet, isn’t it? 💔
It was the great escape, the prison break
The light of freedom on my face
But you weren’t thinking
And I was just drinking
Their marriage was supposed to be the great escape, their chance to break out of the prison that bearding, straight-passing andpublicity had kept them in for so long. Damn, in even considering the mere possibilityof saying yes to such a ludicrous plan Taylor could see the light of thefreedom she hadn’t had in so many years, she could see the life outside of thecloset. Then she’s forced to admit Dianna is not looking at their situationrealistically (she’s “not thinking”.)
While the next line seems to suggest Taylor has somesort of drinking problem I think what it’s really saying is that she’s actingas if she was drunk. For a second while considering saying yes to Dianna’sproposal Taylor isn’t thinking logically, instead she wants to believe in theidea that love conquers everything and that they’ll be able to work out thedetails of their coming out as they go along. This isn’t realistic either andshe’s acting like someone who’s drunk by not caring about the fact that heractions will have consequences.
Another interesting interpretation is to consider thepreviously mentioned old fashioned, like I said before it’s a kind of drink sowe can assume that maybe that’s what Taylor’s drinking here. If we go with whatwe concluded before though the old fashioned isn’t a drink here at all, but thevery practice of bearding, so can we then assume Taylor “drinking” symbolizes herbearding?
Maybe. As Dianna was increasingly losing her grip on realitywhen it came to her relationship with Taylor (by starting to actually think adrama-free come out to be possible) the latter went through a quite intensestunting period to try and combat increasing gay rumors. (Most likely on ordersfrom the spiraling pre-Tree Team Taylor.)
In other words Taylor and Dianna were  on completely opposite sides of the comingout process and thus the freedom they were dreaming about just wasn’t realisticat that point which is what caused the relationship to end.
Well he was running after us, I was screaming ‘Go gogo!’
But with three of us, honey, it’s a side show
And a circus ain’t a love story
And now we’re both sorry (we’re both sorry)
As the girls try to escape the closet their historywith bearding haunts them and they both soon realize it’s impossible to deletetheir collective bearding history from the public consciousness. If they comeout as gay their male exes are gonna be questioned about their sexuality,Taylor and Dianna coming out in the way the want to will unravel so much withinthe industry that it’s frankly not possible. They can’t outrun their pastbearding no matter how fast they go.
Even if they do get married or continue theirrelationship they will have to keep bearding as they can’t come out publicly. Therewill never be just the two of them in the relationship, it will all always be aPR circus and that isn’t a worthy love story.
They both realize this is the truth of the matter andas sorry as they both are (note theoverlapping female vocals on that line) the relationship will simply have toend.
X marks the spot, where we fell apart
He poisoned the well, every man for himself
I knew it from the first old fashioned, we were cursed
It hit you like a shotgun shot to the heart.
Two lines are new here and therefore they are primarilythe interesting ones.
He poisoned the well, every manfor himself
Taylor has realized she’ll have to be the one to leaveas Dianna is still in denial about the fact that they can’t come out. Taylorknows they won’t be able to escape their “straight” past, any claim they canmake regarding their own sexuality has been ruined by past associations withmen, she knows she’ll have to leave Dianna to realize this on her own (“everyman for himself”) as trying to talk to her only leads back to neither wantingthe relationship to be over and thus concocting unrealistic dreams on how theycould make it work against all odds.
It hit you like a shotgun shot tothe heart.
When the truth finally hit Dianna Taylor had alreadyleft and her ex was alone to deal with the pain of the realization that gettingout from the bearding shadow is going to be harder than she wanted to think. Thisundoubtedly felt like a shot to the heart for both Taylor upon having to leaveand Dianna upon finally realizing exactly whyTaylor left.
(Chorus)
We were jet set Bonnie and Clyde
Until I switched to the other side
It’s no surprise, I turned you in
‘Cause us traitors never win
The duo who seem to have inspired the song areactually mentioned by name, quite a long shot from Romeo and Juliet, wouldn’t yousay?
Anyway, Taylor’s saying that her and Dianna were ateam until Taylor decided to pick her career over her girlfriend, this shouldbe unsurprising she muses, as she has (presumably) done so at least oncebefore.
Taylor callsherself a traitor here, interesting.
I recentlywatched HBO’s The Handmaid’s Tale wheregay women are referred to as “gender traitors” this also happens in the book (oneof my favorites) from 1985 by Margaret Atwood on which that show is based. Inaddition to that the term comes up as referring to people (most often women)who act in a way that is atypical or “unbeneficial” to their gender (aka feministsand lesbians) in my course lit for my gender and sexuality in literaturecourse.
I don’t think that’s what Taylor is saying here (unless she likes thatbook too *fingers crossed*) I just thought that was an interesting sidenote asthe “never win” line following that could thus be interpreted as a reference tohow minorities (lesbians for example) are often screwed over by society and “never win”.
What she says I think is that people who pick theircareer over their love life won’t end up being happy, or “winning” at life inthe long-run.
I’m in a getaway car
I left you in the motel bar
I put the money in a bag and stole the keys
That was the last time you ever saw me
By using imagery that invoke the outlaws storylineTaylor is acknowledging her own betrayal she’s saying “sorry, but you should’veguessed this is what I’m like” she wouldn’t risk her career and they both should’verealized sooner.
(Chorus)
I was riding in a getaway car
I was crying in a getaway car
I was dying in a getaway car
Said 'goodbye’ in a getaway car
Taylor may have fronted with “you should’ve seen thiscoming, Di” but really she was upset with herself, she didn’t wanna do this, but she saw no other way out. She was afraid of losing everything she’s workedfor by coming out so instead she took the safe route and broke the relationshipoff. 💔💔
Hope you all enjoyed thatread and feel free to tell me what you think the song is saying, it’s solyrically complex and interesting 😊
If you guys want meto anlyze more Taylor songs or if you have any questions for me, feel free toshoot me an ask 😊
The next song on thelist is Enchanted 🌈🌈🌈

why are people boycotting this season?(Supergirl)
This ask could have been one hour old or one month old. Blame Tumblr mobile if this is a delayed response. I’m sure its their fault somehow. There are few reason some people (like myself) are not watching. Let’s work in chronological order.
Season one was on CBS and had a full season of Karolsen buildup (An inter-racial couple btw). They finally get together end of the first season, just to break up for BS reasons the second season two started. On top of dismissing their chemistry, they set up Kara with an abusive, white, slave owning misogynistic asshole and sidelined the black character. Once Kara was with Mon-Ew (previously mentioned asshole), the show became 1000X less feminist now that Kara relied on the guy for her strength and happiness. There’s also a second reason people dislike this ship, but we’ll get to that.
Next, Alex Danvers (Kara’s sister for those who don’t know) had a wonderful arc that drew thousands of people to this show. You guessed it…GAY! Even though the show was now on the infamous channel of misrepresentation, the CW (or as I like to call it Cishet Whites), we had hope. The writers promised that Latina Maggie was here to stay. Trust in the writers trumped our painful history with the CW. They portrayed a beautiful coming out story that gave LGBT youth an inspiration. But it all went south from there. First of all, the Latina lesbian was played by a tan white actress who has spoken out about what it means to be Latina and gay, when she is in fact neither. WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD! Second, we trusted the writers instead of knowing that history repeats. The homophobic CW strikes again with a Sanvers breakup set for season three. The CW, by the way, has a two gay mains per season limit.
Remember when I said that I’d explain why people are not a fan of that straight ship? Let me just say: Supercorp.  I won’t get too far into it, but the way they acted would be unmistakably seen as flirting/romantic if they were a m/f dynamic, but because it was two girls, was brushed off as a strong female friendship. Also, Kara was too preoccupied with her shit head boyfriend. Yes, it was frustrating that it wasn’t canon, but even straights struggle with non-canon OTPs. No, the thing that was most upsetting was the ridicule. The other side of the fandom laughed it off as a crack ship and called shippers delusional. Fandoms can be cruel. Then– in late July in San Diego– Comic Con 2017.  The cast gave a musical recap of season two with a break in the melody where Germy Jordan screamed into the camera about Supercorp “THEY’RE ONLY FRIENDS!” Followed by Melissa Benmoist; “THEY’RE ONLY FRIENDS” And a singsongy “THEY’RE NOT GONNA GET TOGETHER THEY’RE ONLY FRIENDS” from Germy again. The entire cast that was present with the exception of three was laughing and dancing along. Not to mention the fact that neither Alex nor Maggie, who started dating and got engaged all in season two, were never mentioned. Whether it was intended or not the cast acted very homophobic, dismissing obvious flirting as friend just because they’re female and discussing the straight ship while ignoring the wlw one. They acknowledged it was wrong, but we only ever got one half assed apology.
This was much longer than I intended and probably longer than you wanted, and to be honest I probably missed a lot. My point is, people stopped watching for not-thought-out storylines, sidelining poc characters, romanticization of abusive relationships, lack of feminist ideals, false representation of poc, broken promises from writers, a homophobic platform, heteronormativity, being seen as a joke in the fandom and being ridiculed by the cast themselves who are mostly terrible people. I hope this helped.

Just saw someone on twitter claim that straight men are bigots if they don't want to date a trans woman, what's your opinion on that stance?
oh god that’s why I detest tumblr social justice
okay so
no one owes no one a fuck. period. you aren’t owed a fuck because you exist and you want it.
now, that said: if someone doesn’t want to date a trans person because they think trans people are disgusting or are delusional or that transsexuality doesn’t exist, then they’re a bigot. if their problem is that they don’t find them attractive then... it’s not being a bigot?
like, I’m a straight woman. vaginas and/or female sexual characteristics for me are like, going from indifferent to total turn off (I mean TMI breasts for me are a total turn off lol) and the only women I ever found attractive aren’t the epitome of femininity. I like dick, same as I suppose a straight dude would like a vagina and not finding dicks attractive.
now, there’s people and people. some straight people can/will make exceptions, others just won’t get turned on at their same genitals. given that the trans woman in this case should be pre-op because from what I gather post-op is basically more or less the same as the cis thing if you’re a straight dude or anyway more or less along like that, if a straight dude who doesn’t like dick doesn’t feel like dating or having sex with a trans woman because he can’t find dicks hot then... he’s not a bigot, he’s exercising his right to bang whoever the hell he likes. I mean, if a dude turns me down because I’m not his type he’s not a misogynist, he’s just not into me for whichever reason, and there’s nothing wrong with that. or if I hit on a gay dude and he tells me sorry nope not attracted to women, is the guy misogynist for turning me down? NO, because he doesn’t enjoy having sex with the parts I can offer and it’s fine, because I wouldn’t hit on a woman in the first place so... if I don’t like vaginas surely he also can not like them and there’s nothing wrong with it. and like... so, straight women who wouldn’t want to date ftms also would be bigots? I mean, why is it always straight men being the bigots in these tweets? anyway.
as long as your straight men they have nothing against trans people then they’re not bigots. I most probably wouldn’t date a lesbian because I’m in no way shape or form interested in having sex with a woman (that’s not one of those exceptions but they’re way beyond my reach and my type is hardly common lol) and that doesn’t make me a homophobe. no one should stretch beyond their comfort because of sex.
like.
sex should be consensual and both people should be on board with it and telling someone ‘if you don’t bang me you’re a bigot’ is... pretty much coercing them into giving you sex and that’s not cool in any way shape or form again, so... like... no, a straight man is not necessarily a bigot for not wanting to date a trans woman, but no one is a -ist or a bigot or a -phobic for not wanting to date anyone as long as it’s a thing that has to do with their personal taste and not to prejudices. like, if you don’t wanna date someone black because you think black people are inferior then you’re a racist, if you don’t wanna date black person X because they don’t strike your fancy then you’re not a racist. seems... fairly simple to me? Idg this attitude that people are owed sex for whichever reason. like. no. and on a websited/in a movement so big on consent it shouldn’t even be a thing.
that said, I’d like to specify a thing just because since everyone shits on *the horrible straight people* for kicks and omg we’re all such bigots (nvm that a lesbian might not wanna date a pre-op trans woman either, is she a bigot too?), a thing is occasional fucks/hook-ups and one thing is serious relationships or really liking someone that much. because I mean, there’s people behind faces, and sometimes really liking someone that much might mean that you... like, can handle compromising. or if you really like this person you think you might hook up with and you really wanna bang them, if they’re up front about it and they are trans... like, a lot of people would probably try anyway. I mean, let’s say I fall in love with a guy desperately and we’re in a serious thing and I want to make it work and then he realizes later in life that he’s actually mtf, if I really like this person I’d most probably compromise and, like, NOT DUMP THEM just because they might want to transition. and if I’m not into their new sexual parts fine, I still like what’s behind that. or, if I meet someone at a bar and I want to hook up with this guy I really like and turns out he’s either really well-passing pre-op ftm or post-op ftm (because I doubt I’d get attracted to someone who doesn’t at least look masculine in the first place) and the person tells me beforehand and I know what I’m getting into before we get naked I’d probably give it a try anyway because a) if the rest is attractive to me there’s room to work with, b) if it doesn’t work peace but like, if I did want to bang them before I knew then trying can’t hurt. and like... I doubt I’m the only straight person on the face of this planet who might be willing to compromise. like, people who aren’t TOTALLY BLACK AND WHITE on the matter exist, it’d be nice if it was recognized that DISCUSSING SHIT BEFORE IT HAPPENS (on this website) MIGHT ACTUALLY BROUGHT THE DESIRED RESULT. and then again if you end up with a straight dude who really can’t get it up if they don’t have opposite body parts in front of them that’s how he was born and unless he HATES TRANS PEOPLE he has all the rights to turn you down if he just wants sex.
like, coercing sex is not fun whoever does it. just don’t and talk about it before people lose clothes and don’t preach on twitter instead. *shrug*

stop. sexualizing. the. friendship. of. real. people. (anti-gross Scömìche bullshit forever). it baffles me how you all think they approve of this stuff because of a little teasing.
Youknow, I was gonna go for a flippant reply but you haven’t beenquite as insulting as the previous anon I got on the topic, and Ifigure putting my thoughts on this in order can’t hurt, so you geta long answer under the cut.
Preface:while I have written a couple of RPF fics before, including a coupleof shippy ones, I am not involved deeply with the RPF community andintend to keep it that way. Also, I will not get into the question ofwhether or not Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi really are dating ornot, because I believe it is ultimately irrelevant to the discussionat hand and to the writing of RPF fic in general.
(Inany case, it’s completely irrelevant to my shipping, and I tend tothink the contrary would demonstrate an unhealthy levelof investment, but that may just be me.)
Withoutfurther ado (but with apologies to the tag for the unnecessary drama)let’s get on with:
Fanfan’sthoughts about RPF
So.‘Gross Scomiche bullshit’. There are two ways to read this:either you’re implying that RPF is gross in general and onprinciple (which I disagree with) or you’re saying that implyingthat these two guys, who are both part of the LGBTQ+/MOGAI/Queercommunity, could be in a romantic relationship is gross, which I alsodisagree with except with a lot more passion.
I.‘RPF is gross!’
Thisassumes that I (can’t speak for other RPF writers, obviously) writeabout Scott Hoying and Mitch Grassi as actual people, the way I could(but personally wouldn’t) write about a neighbor or a classmate.I’m writing about them as characters, by which I mean I am writingabout the fictionalized version of their persona they present throughtheir work with Superfruitand the various videos, interviews and live chats they’ve given asmembers of Pentatonix.
Here’sthe thing, we don’t actually know anything about what they are aspeople. What we see is a facsimile designed to imitate their lives, but whatever we see—and this is even more the case now that theyhave actual notoriety and actual PR to think of—is always releasedwith the knowledge that thousands of people will see it, analyze itand judge it, meaning it is notthe same as what they’ddo when unwatched.
Howmuch the two differ, I have no idea and, in any case, I don’t thinkit’s my business. They get to decide what they put in the publicsphere, and they get to decide whether the stop line moves, how far, etc.
However, once they put something up on YouTube or wherever fans can see it, itbecomes part of this semi-fiction that are public relationships. (1)I mean, I get why people don’t want to dig into that aspect offandom. Some people prefer to keep more distance with thenarrative—because, again, itisa narrative—because they can’t dissociate it from the peoplebehind it, just like some people can’t dissociate a movie characterfrom the actor who plays them, and that’s fine.
Ijust find it disingenuous to pretend like people shipping or writingRPF is the causeofthat dissociation when it is inherent in the very principle ofcelebrities sharing with the public. (Whether or not thatdissociation is a good thing or pronounced/obvious enough is aninteresting conversation, but it’s neither here nor there.)
Now,I won’t pretend there aren’t any problems with RPF. The fact thatcelebs get tweeted/mailed/forwarded links at RPF isa problem. They have a right not to be unwillingly exposed to stories writtenabout their fictional personalities, which I know can feel weird. (2)
Ialso acknowledge that sometimes things go far enough to weird meout—conspiration theory exists in every domain, apparently, and itlooks odd everywhere. There’s also the…oddly entitled tone thatsome anti shippers such as the anon I got a few days ago, who soundedalmost offended that Scomiche wasn’t an actual thing, like it was abad show plotline. (3)
Thatbeing said, I would also like to point out that I have, as of yet, never seen or heard of an artist sending links to their works(especially not their erotic work) to celebrities themselves. In myexperience, celebs getting linked to RPF usually comes in threeflavors:
A friend/acquaintance of them somehow found the RPF and sent itforward, presumably out of a ‘this shit is hilarious and they haveto see it’ sentiment
ATV/radio host went on a ‘I need something to laugh at and thesestupid delusional fans are the perfect target’ binge
Theceleb themselves went ahead and read fic, but those are usually awareof fanfiction beforehand, imo, should know better than to go lookingif they’re not ready to handle the levels of whackadoo-ing. (4)
However, none of these problems are inherently tied with the fact that thesubjects are actual people: they come from how people treat the ficthemselves. Actors and actresses have similar problems with beingshown fanart of their characters (which have their faces so I doubtthe weird effect is entirely absent there) and fans who write regularfanfiction are also mocked for what they do.
Soif you don’t like RPF, honestly, it’s your prerogative. You couldalso not have a problem with RPF but find certain fics gross, whichis alsofair. Heavenknows I’ve noped out/away from enough fics not to blame people whodo the same.
ButRPF isn’t inherently gross, any more than regular fic is, and whilethere are things to pay attention to in writing it (just like thereis in any kind of fictional writing) I honestly think the systemicproblems lie more with how people handle it than with its existenceas a whole.
II.‘Ew why can’t two guys just be friends?’
Thesecond possible reading of your ‘gross Scomiche content’ commentis that you basically find the possibility of them having a romanticrelationship gross which, well. You do realize how saying that to alesbian isn’t exactly the most polite thing, right?
Imean, honestly, I don’t want to spend hours on that part. Therehave been thousands upon thousands of words written about how the‘let them be just friends’is often mostly a newway of saying ‘keep thegay out of myface!’. Now, maybe you are LGBTQ+/MOGAI/Queer person, in which caseI apologize for the assumption of lingering homophobia.
Honestlythough, the only pairings that get more ‘ew, just let them befriends instead of making them all gay’ than white males are peoplewho are even more marginalized (lesbians, trans people, women ofcolor, you name it) so forgive me if I’m not exactly receptive tothat line of thinking, especially given the fact that, again, ScottHoying and Mitch Grassi are both somewhere on the rainbow spectrum ofsexualities.
Toput it succintly, that second possible reading of your commentstrikes me as either really bad wording or a frankly gross sentiment, and while I’m hoping for the former, the fact that I’ve literallynever seen or heard of similar comments for het-RPShipping makes mefear it’s the latter…and if it really is the latter I don’treally have any answer to the sentiment than a giant, rainbow-coloredfist-shaking.
(1)As an FYI, when I say PR is a fictionalized version of the truth, itdoesn’t only apply to celebrities. For example: two days ago, thenew French Ambassador of Cambodia visited my workplace. We werewarned several days in advance, and the whole place got scrubbedfloor to ceiling in preparation. Then, about 10-15minutes before thelady came in, one of my bosses made sure none of the teachers wereeating in the teachers’ lounge and told us, verbatim ‘pretend tobe working’.
Whenthe Uber-boss and the regular boss noticed I was looking at a boardgame in the corner, they hurried to explain that I teach children soyeah, this is totally work.Which it was, the ambassador just didn’t get to see that I was alsowatching Superfruit vids in between preparing activities for my kids.
Whatwe presented that day wasn’t a completefiction: I really am a teacher for kids and we really do work in theteachers’ lounge. But also we eat, we banter, we have fun, none ofwhich fits with the accepted workplace fiction of everyone being 100%at work all the time…which is why we had to create a facade. It wasclose—very close—to reality, but it still wasn’t real.
Celebritieswho are paid a lot and work very hard to make us think they’rehaving so much fun it’s almost like their don’t work, and alsolike there’s nothing they’d rather be doing than to meet a bunchof us and have the same four or five conversations over and overagain, probably get a bigger difference between their actual livesand their public persona. But I digress.
(2)Fun fact, @talysalankil once got an anon ask that shipped ustogether (I can’t remember if it was a friends ship or a romanticship) so I can confirm the thought of seeing stuff about beingshipped with someone myself was a strange one. I’m fine with it aslong as I don’t see anything (if there is even anything to see, lbr, it’s not like I’m actually famous, even on Tumblr) but Ialso acknowledge that I would probably not feel very comfortableabout seeing that potential material.
Thatbeing said, imagining there were any content to be found about me(again: highly unlikely) all I have to do is not go see it andeveryone can be on their merry ways because no one gets hurt.
(3)Full disclosure: my personal opinion, given the recent material I’veseen, is that these boys are either really, really unsubtle abouttheir love life and its current state, or they’re pushing the PRgame quite far indeed. Neither outcome is going to prevent me fromwriting RPF about their fictionalized lives if I damn well want to.
(4)Like, for example, I haven’t watched the Superfruitvid where they read RPF yet (I’m going through their channel inchronological order, sue me) but I do know Mitch mentioned being ontumblr all the time so I’d be really surprised if he didn’texpect at least someweirdness going in. Sometimes you get more than you bargained for,it’s true, but basic self preservation is a thing, guys.
