Derwent Edge - Derbyshire, UK
This week I’m taking positives from small wins with larger significance having had an opportunity to undertake two challenging procedures with some success.
While the first did not bring about the desired outcome, it was an unmissable opportunity to attempt a highly technical procedure under close supervision. Having given it my best shot, mental barriers that often lead to me finding excuses to not have an attempt have subsided and I’m fired up to seize the next opportunity to put into practice learning points and build my confidence.
Thankfully the second was a success, and while the process could’ve been smoother, we got the job done and helped progress the care of a 6 month old. I was on the cusp on aborting the procedure, knowing in the back of my mind the chances of success were slim. As I was beginning, the anxious parent mentioned a consultant had tried a month prior with no success. What was so rewarding, was that this was a procedure that I’d spent many months gaining experience in watching seniors undertake so effortlessly. Ever since, I’ve been trying to emulate them despite the hit and miss success rate on older children on whom precision procedures are usually more straight forward.
It’s a good feeling. As I look over my shoulder and see where my journey has taken me so far, I’m counting them as little victories on the arc of my overall progress.

Geology Rocks

Geology Rocks by Dave Fieldhouse Via Flickr: A typical summers evening in the Peak District. Having been cooped up all week I decided to treat myself to a decent hike to one of the quieter parts of the national park. Light was fleeting as I made my way, but I had a sinking feeling it would all be gone by the time I reached my intended destination (and I was right). It became clear that if I was to come away from anything from this trip it would all be down to composition. I had noticed with my recent images that I had started taking foreground for granted (I don't use it much in street or woodland shots that often) so decided to use the opportunity as a chance to work on that. Making the most of the Fujifilm XT4's IBIS I started experimenting with compositions that gave a decent lead in to the frame. This was my favourite.

Rocking Stones and Crow Stones Sunset by James Grant Via Flickr: I thought as the cold snap seems to have gone and it's warming up then I'd post a shot from last summer. This is from the Rocking Stones and Crow Stones (you may remember my previous photo) showcasing the beautiful heather we had last year. I'm looking forward to running my heather workshops again this year, they always prove very popular and it's not hard to guess why! "Froggatt Edge and Bridge, near Grindleford". G. Marsden & Son, Wirksworth and London, No.2722. Derbyshire "Artistic" Series
Froggatt Edge is a gritstone escarpment in North Derbyshire, overlooking the village of Froggatt, the hamlets of Stoke and Goatscliffe and the River Derwent. It is a continuation of Curbar Edge and was described by Ebenezer Rhodes, who toured the county in the early nineteenth century, as "that lofty ridge of mountains". He went on to say that "the view from this rocky elevation, in grandeur and sublimity, is unsurpassed in Derbyshire : indeed it would be difficult to find in one short mile of road, in any other part of the kingdom, a succession of scenery more richly and beautifully varied than is here presented. ... On one side of the river the highest eminences are turreted with broken crags of rock, which is the grand marking feature of every lofty projection from Froggatt to Mill-stone Edge".
[Rhodes, Ebenezer (1824) "Peak Scenery" pub. London, Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown, and Green, Paternoster Row.]
Many have enjoyed the view and in recent years the actress Keira Knightley was filmed standing on the top of the Edge in the film version of Jane Austen's early nineteenth century novel "Pride and Prejudice".
