Day 1: First Fandoms: Dedicated To... by MissHyperbole (MyScene Dolls, G, 1,173 words, Barbie/River)

"The bass player dedicated a song to me! But then we saw him giving his number to another girl."

Barbie and River have a moment at the 11c gig.

I adored this fic so much, it felt exactly like reading a MyScene webisode. The River/Barbie plotline was also my fave from the CD-ROM game and this just brought me back to that game quest with Barbie tying that red string around her finger and tracking down dog tags.

Day 2: Bookmark Day: The Poet's House by spacewitchbot (Romance Is A Bonus Book, E, 4,467 words, Cha Eunho/Kang Dani)

Cha Eun-ho slid a tiny piece of paper across the table to Dan-i. She unfolded it and read the note. “Marry me, Kang Dan-i,” he’d written.

She looked up at him with a smirk and shook her head, just enough for him to see. Nearly everyone had filed out of the room. He smiled and turned away, saying nothing more. But, he noticed as he glanced back, she hadn’t crumpled the paper. She folded the note neatly and tucked it in her notebook.

This fic felt so much like watching the drama. If you finished the drama and wanted to settle into the post canon world a bit before re-watching then this is the fic for you. The first chapter especially!! All of the Gyeroo employees together was just ahhh!!! so so so much like their interactions on screen

Day 3: Old Favorites: An Unexpected Attachment by umbrafix (Sense and Sensibility, G, 11,532 words, Colonel Brandon/Elinor Dashwood)

While Marianne was ill at Cleveland, Colonel Brandon was everything that was kind and attentive to Elinor.

Re-reading this fic (and commenting on it finally after reading it two years ago at least when I first finished S&S, eek!) reminded me of how much I loved Colonel Brandon and Elinor and how much I need more of them all the damn time. umbrafix's writing style pairs perfectly with Austen's and this fic was so good and scratched all the right places in my brain that if S&S had played out like this fic then maybe it would top Northanger Abbey as my fave Austen

Day 4: Fandom Curiosity: Dark But Just A Game by linnycarol (Succession, E, 3,952 words, Gerri Kellman/Roman "Romulus" Roy)

Gerri spends Fourth of July weekend with the Roy family and sparks fly between her and Roman.

This fic accomplished the goal of fandom curiosity and seeing Succession on my dash and making me finally want to watch the show. It was such a well done fic with spice and tenderness and realism. I can't wait to watch Succession, finish Succession, and then go back and read this fic with the knowledge of the canon

Day 5: Rec A Fic aka I Used This As A Free Day: party of one (party of none) by uncut (deadwine) (Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food, G, 540 words, Yoon Jinah)

Jinah searches for everything the day takes away from her in the night.

This fic was a treat for the senses. Every detail brought me into Jinah's world alongside her. It was an excellent character introspection that was so beautiful and poignant to read. If you have yet to watch Pretty Noona Who Buys Me Food AKA Something In The Rain if you're searching for it on Netflix, I highly highly recommend reading this fic before watching because it captures Jinah's feelings at the start of the show so well.

hey friends! okay, so i’ve been trying to find this fic for a while and i just can’t find the author. it’s a bucky x reader. the reader escaped from hydra and is working at stark tower when bucky comes up with a sexy proposal. reader admits she’s not very sex-active and instead bucky proposes to teach her about sex. just vanilla stuff at first but it becomes more kinky as time goes on. each chapter is basically a different sex encounter with bucky and the reader. also bucky used to date natasha.

The world spun around you. The bright lights above you circled each other above you as you stared up at them. You couldn't move, your shivering frame glued to the cold floor. Your lips parted as you tried to scream, yet your voice was silent. You screamed until you were breathless, but nothing reverberated off the walls.

"What's the matter, Angel? Cat got your tongue?"

You heard his voice, his chuckle echoing in your ears, but you couldn't see him. You felt his hands on you, touching you as you were frozen to the ground, unable to move or scream for help.

"Be a good girl now, Angel, maybe I'll be gentle."

The screaming woke Bucky up in a cold sweat. He shot up with a gasp as the shrill shriek echoed through the walls of his room. He shoved Steve, who was asleep beside him. Steve woke with a jolt, his hair disheveled from sleep and a pattern of wrinkles from his pillow imprinted into his cheek.

"What?" Steve slurred, blinking up at Bucky. Bucky was already out of bed, yanking a shirt over his head.

"It's Y/n, she's—"

Bucky was cut short by another terrified wail resonating throughout the room. Steve rushed out of bed, clumsily shuffling on a pair of pants before he followed Bucky out of the room. Natasha opened her door, looking at the pair.

"You guys got it?" she asked, stifling a yawn.

"Yeah," Steve said, "we got her. Go back to bed."

Natasha nodded, giving Steve and Bucky a quick wave before she closed her bedroom door. The two super soldiers rushed to your room, just opposite of Natasha's, and carefully opened your door.

You were curled into a ball, the covers kicked off the bed. You clutched your pillow as tears streamed down your cheeks, sweat beading at your hairline. You cried out again, your grip tightening on your pillow. Bucky crouched down beside your bed, gently brushing a strand of sweat-soaked hair away from your face, cooing as you whimpered.

"Y/n, honey," Bucky crooned. "It's okay, it's just a dream, doll."

His knuckles grazed your cheek and your eyes open with a gasp. You shot up and immediately began to shuffle away from Bucky, nearly falling off the bed. Bucky launched himself forward and grabbed your arm before you fell, pulling you back toward him.

"It's okay, Y/n, it's just us," Bucky says gently, holding his hands out like a sign of surrender.

"Bucky?" Your voice was cracked and hoarse from screaming. "S—Steve?"

"Yeah, sweetheart," Steve smiled, sitting beside you. "We're here. It's okay."

Your lower lip began to wobble and you reached out for Steve, who embraced you in a hug. Steve shushed you as you cried into his shoulder, petting your hair softly.

"It's okay, sweetheart. You're okay. It was just a dream."

"Hey, honey," Bucky cooed. "How about I go warm you up some of that cider from yesterday, yeah? How does that sound?"

You nodded against Steve's chest, arms latched across the back of his neck as you clung to him. Steve rubbed your back gently, kissing your temple as Bucky left your room.

"You're okay, sweetheart, it was just a dream," Steve whispered. "Can you try to talk to me? Tell me what your dream was about?"

Steve felt you part your lips and stutter, like you were trying to form words. The shaking in your shoulders got worse and you let out a broken sob, trying to wiggle closer to him.

Bonghee is a lawyer, first and foremost. Her interest in the rituals and ceremonies behind marriage is purely at face value, fake. She and Jiwook are already basically married in every sense of the word, just not on paper.

And that’s a point of great worry to her mother and Jiwook’s. Mr. Byun doesn’t particularly care about them living in sin together as much as his wife does.

One day, he whispers to her, “I don’t understand why Bokja-ah is being so fussy. You know we used to live together before marriage, and it certainly wasn’t all celibate.”

He winks at her, while she stares at him (her future father-in-law) in horror. Mentally trying to erase the said picture from her brain, she thanks him profusely and changes the direction of that conversation rather quickly.

She did not need that mental scarring, thank you very much.

But all said and done, she really is very excited to get married to Jiwook. She loves him, he loves her, and that’s that. After that whole Hyunsoo debacle, their lives and cases have been relatively straightforward.

Any and all arguments in court are kept to court at all times (the no shoptalk policy is very strictly enforced at home), and Bonghee loves this domestic, mundane routine they have adopted.

She doesn’t need grand declarations of love or big, important, life-changing moments, small and simple is good enough for her.

Jiwook is immeasurably happy. He doesn’t know how to exactly explain this feeling but he’s looking forward to spending the rest of his life with her.

It’s been a little annoying staying home without her since her mother has whisked her off a month before the wedding. Frankly, he doesn’t get the point of it; they’re a happy couple, and yes, of course, they’ve had sex before marriage.

It’s a bit too late to protect either of their virtues, really. Not that it matters.

But, his and her mother have certain expectations from this wedding. As only children, this is their rare opportunity and they are going the whole mile in terms of rituals, traditions, and the grandiose nature of the wedding itself.

His adoptive father, Mr. Byun, had faux-complained in the beginning about how his “precious money was being spent so frivolously” but one withering look from his Eomma had shut him down completely. Besides, Jiwook knows he doesn’t really mind,

He was one of the first people Jiwook had brought up the idea, and both of them will deny it to their dying breaths, but there had been lots of tears. Mr. Byun was inordinately happy at Jiwook’s decision, and Jiwook was just happy to get the paternal validation and affection that he had been looking for.

In his career, he may be known as the worst prosecutor, but nobody could ever deny that Jiwook was a whipped boyfriend, and will be a whipped husband. He doesn’t mind the moniker, because Bonghee is the love of his life and he loves her to pieces.

Marriage isn’t simply a chore or a checkmark on the list that society and life prescribe for everyone.

He wants this. He wants her. He loves her.

For better or for worse. In sickness and in health. For richer or for poorer.

He’ll love and cherish her till death would part them.

Normally, Jiwook isn’t a romantic or a cheesy or an idealistic man, but Bonghee brings out a certain softness in him, a fondness for her.

On the day of the wedding, Jiwook and Bonghee, both, become well-versed in the power of Murphy’s Law. If things can go wrong, they will and in their case, they do.

Kim Jae Hong, who’s their ring bearer, goes missing a few hours before their official ceremony, and Jiwook is losing his mind. When Jihae informs Bonghee of this development, the bride, like her husband-to-be, begins panicking as well. Their friends and family sigh at the couple in fond exasperation.

Weddings are never perfect. There’s beauty in chaos. A little asymmetry brings love together- perfects it, really.

The boy is eventually found reading a book near the altar, but both the bride and groom are fully on edge.

Eunhyuk decides to take things into his own hands, and smack some sense into his two best friends. And yes, he considers them to be his best friends; just as he considers Yoonjung to be his best friend as well, despite their romantic relationship.

“Jiwook-ah?” He asks, entering the room and catching the groom pacing around the room hurriedly.

“Eunhyuk? What happened? Is everything okay? Is something else going wrong?” He shoots off a flurry of questions that Eunhyuk can barely catch, and Jiwook’s anxious tone rises in volume with every question.

“Calm down! Everything is fine,” he promises, watching as the other man calms down. Jiwook lets out a deep sigh and sinks into the chair behind him.

“Are you okay, Jiwook?”

“Honestly, no,”

And, he looks tired, exhausted, despite the wedding formal wear, and the smile he’s painted on.

Eunhyuk sits beside him.

“What’s going on?’

“I- I’m just worried,” Jiwook admits.

Eunhyuk laughs.

“About what? You’re marrying Bonghee. You love her, right? I don’t see what’s the problem.”

“I do love her,” he agrees, “I’m just afraid. Of the future, of uncertainty.” There’s an unsaid ‘of commitment’ and Eunhyuk is well-aware of the commitment issues Jiwook has because of his and Yoojung’s previous betrayal. Eunhyuk still lives in guilt over that, and he’s atoning.

But, he also knows that Jiwook loves Bonghee (perhaps far more than he loved Yoojung).

“Well, now it’s up to you to decide. Is your love for Bonghee greater than your fear of the future?” Eunhyuk stares at him pointedly, and a look of understanding enters Jiwook’s eyes.

“Yes,” he nods, “you’re right. I do love her.”

“Good. Because, it’s time to get you married, so hurry up,” Eunhyuk gets up and extends a hand to Jiwook.

He smiles and grabs it, getting up as well.

When both the bride and groom’s fears have been calmed, the wedding passes by much more smoothly. Bonghee looks beautiful, but the look of awe, love, adoration that enters Jiwook’s face as he stares at his wife-to-be is unmatched.

There’s no denying among the guests that they both love each other unequivocally.

A hush passes in the room, as the bride and groom exchange their vows with each other in quiet whispers, barely audible. Both their eyes are shiny with unshed tears, and quite literally, nobody’s eyes can leave the couple.

The mothers and Mr. Byun are sobbing in the front, and even Mr. Bang cries a lot. Yoojung, Jihae and Eunhyuk try to remain composed. Key word being try; they fail miserably and there’s not one dry eye in the numerous guests that have attended this wedding.

Together, Bonghee and Jiwook have a lot of well-wishers, and they share a fair stake in the happiness that reverberates around the room in this expression of love.

Marriage isn’t an entirely new story for them. Rather, it’s a new chapter in the age-old book of their love.

hi authors! Not strictly fic related, but I noticed that lots of the stories have really detailed descriptions of scents. I LOVE this and I was wondering if you have any perfume/"signature scent" recs? Maybe even do a quiz on scents for different aesthetics? 👀

We did a post of the OC girlfriends' perfumes (not including Da-eun - we imagine her wearing Anna Sui Sky in the recent fic - pic below). But we'd love to do a second edition as we've mentioned the girlfriends wearing more/different perfumes since. Maybe a profile with several scents included! We also include some of the perfume bottles mentioned in our fanart! I can think of 2 Cass' images with a perfume bottle and also one of Ara off the top of my head.

Yes - I am obsessed with perfume as my perfume collection shows (yes, I have a bit of a problem!)

As a side note, I think the perfumes they wear say a lot about them. There’s quite a big contrast for example between the scents Da-eun and Cass wears.

“Hey, hey, hey,” Minho hurriedly follows you into his bedroom, where Hyunjin and Seungmin were busy playing League of Legends together. “The two of you want an invitation to get out?”

“Oh, no, is this about the news-”

Chan’s voice rings from the living room outside. “Seungmin-ah, Hyunjin-ie, give them some space, would you?”

Crashing into Minho’s bed, your face is lucky it’s completely ridden of makeup before you bury your face into his pillow. Hyunjin’s face is strained, and Seungmin, for once, offers Lee Know a gentler pair of eyes that beg to tell him that he’s trying his best to empathise.

Hyunjin waits by the door frame for Seungmin to step out of the room, then rests his hand on the door handle to pull it shut.

“You’ll take care of her, won’t you?”

“Is she your girlfriend or mine?”

Hyunjin snickers, standing straight up and pulls the door. “Good.”

The door clicks shut, and you can hear Minho turning on the lock so that none of his younger members could barge in later on. This was going to be a long, arduous conversation.

“y/n, talk to me. Why are you crying? Are you scared or worried or-”

“All of the above.”

“Do you want JYP and HYBE to call this off? Then we can just let Dispatch do it’s job and find us out like the good ol’ days.”

“No, no, I don’t hate the idea,” Sniffling, you peel yourself off the surface of his bed and sit up, leaning against the wall with your feet by his thighs. He scoots over next to you and leans against the wall as well, head tilted to watch the tears stream down your face. His finger brushes across your cheek, and he gingerly wipes it on his own shirt before wiping off another.

“I just... I don’t want this so sabotage Stray Kids or WI5HES, y’know? Ju Rin was right... we don’t have a strong fanbase - what if we crumble before we can fly? I’m the second oldest in my group and what am I going to do or how am I going to answer to... like, Gahyun or So Eun or Minjung’s parents when this plan goes to shit?”

“Bang PD-nim did say HYBE and JYP will offer all the help and protection we needed, no?” His voice is quiet and a little sing-song-y as he sits up against the wall, sliding his arm over yours before interlocking his fingers. “And about your younger members, I’m sure Ju Rin knows what to do about them. Besides, this is in conjunction with the South Korean Human Rights Act. It’s political now. Fans can’t just bash us then expect us to go back to before this.”

It feels like your soul’s sunken in on itself - it’s great news, but why does it feel so heavy? Sliding down the wall and your rear digging deeper into the mattress, Minho remains quiet and breathing when you rest your head on his shoulder, and you feel the weight of his head and cheek pressing against the crown of your hair.

“What if this just goes to shit?” The breathy worry comes out in a mere exhale. Minho’s shoulder rise and fall with his breathing; his thumb comes over yours to stroke your finger joint.

“Forget about HYBE and JYP and Dispatch for a moment... I’m scared we won’t last.”

His shoulders heave, then shifts under your cheek so he can hold your face in his palms.

You detect his anxiety first before you can realise what was happening.

Yet the comfort supercedes your worries in that moment of forever, when Minho shuts his eyes and you follow suit, letting his nose press into your cheek and his lips sweet against yours.

Your cheeks burn in his palms, though they were already warm before, and your hands are awkwardly clutching the material of his bedsheets by your legs.

He stops, then pulls away and presses his forehead to yours as his thumbs wipe away the streaks your tears left behind on your cheeks.

“If you trust me, then trust that I need you as much as you need me, so I promise you, I will do everything I can to make sure that doesn’t happen.”

Minho presses another kiss into your forehead, hands cupping your cheeks with yours over his knuckles. It felt good - knowing that he’d be by your side through this ordeal. The unnoticeable smirk on his face as he leans in again, the tip of his nose already pressing into your cheek makes you smile, but just as his breath hits your lips-

“LeE KNooOWWOWOWOOOWOWWO hYUNNgggG~”

“Agh-- Felix!”

“What? I was- I was just trying to lighten the mood-”

“There’s nothing to lighten- get away from the door!”

“But- I just- OW- that’s my finger!”

A gentle laughter breaks through you, fingers curling around the flesh of Minho’s palm to remove them off your face.

“Eish... And just when I thought I could get another one of those...”

Hyunjin snatches the phone out of Jisung’s hands, eyes scanning the screen. “Wow, I definitely did not see this coming so fast. It feels different when it’s out.”

“Give that back--”

“So, what now?” Hyunjin rests his hands on his hips, watching Minho pat the lower area of your back as you finish texting Ju Rin.

“WI5HES is on their way here right now. We’ll be having a joint meeting, them and us. Bang PD-nim and JYP have things to tell us,” Chan pulls off his cap and runs his hands through his hair before he shoves it back on.

“Wait, WI5HES is on the way here now?”

The dual voices catch the attention of the entire room. Jeongin is staring at Changbin in utter dismay (and confusion). The younger’s hands fly up to point to Changbin, who immediately does the same as well.

“WHO IS IT?”

Minho’s eyes widen and laughs like a manic. Now, the confusion is starting to whelm you too. You know about Min Jung and Jeong In, but who is Changbin--

“Awwww noooo,” Chan groans and face palms. Seungmin’s shaking his head in the background and Hyunjin and Felix are leaning on Jisung for support, his uncontrollable laughter completely silent and obviously sucking the life out of him.

“I- I’m your hyung, so you- you better say yours first!” Changbin messily waves his index finger in Jeong In’s face. The maknae’s cheeks are blushing, and it tickles you to know why.

“I-I am not dating anybody from WI5HES, that’s for sure-”

“Oh my God,” You lean into Minho’s ear and whisper. “Changbin doesn’t know about Min Jung?”

He grins and shakes his head. “I’m a good hyung, I don’t sell people’s secrets to anybody else, not even if we were in the same group.”

“AhHhHH stop stalling!” Changbin’s anxiety is making you and Minho crack up even more, though you are just waiting for Changbin to reveal who he was interested in. “QUicKLY sAY WHo it is yOu’rE INtERESTEd in!!!”

Jeong In groans in frustration, both his hands burying into his hair. “Ahh...”

Chan’s glaring at the both of them now, slightly exasperated.

“OKay, okay... I just... I may or may not have a thing for Min Jung, okay? I just- OW!” The slap nearly echoes through the studio. He rubs his arm and stumbles away from Changbin, who looks a mixture of annoyed and relieved. “WHAT WAS THAT FOR-”

“She’s underaged you- you- you stupid!” He sneers and bares his teeth, then his voice gets super low. “But at least it’s not my girl.”

“YAH!” Chan flings his cap directly into Changbin’s face. “It’s your turn, else I will whoop yer ass when they come!”

Changbin fumbles, trying to catch the cap but fails miserably, earning snickers and snorts from the younger members. He freezes awkwardly, with his hands placed atop one another above his abdomen.

“You better tell us which one it is before Chan hyung whoops you,” Felix lowly warns. Changbin, however, deemed it fit to suddenly bolt for the studio door, hands fumbling messily to get a grip on the handle before the door finally clicks open.

But he almost runs down the person on the other side of the door, and Changbin jumps in almost-unbelievable surprise with his face reddening all over. Your hands fly to your mouth when you see who Changbin’s absolutely gushing about, and Minho breaks out into the most frantic laughter possible.

“Oh?” Ju Rin’s eyes widen. “Changbin-sshi! Are you okay?”

k-drama rec list

Prior to 2020 I’d maybe watched 2 k-dramas in my entire life, but this year I got sucked in, thanks to some great recs, and y’know, *gestures * everything.

I think I’d held off watching kdramas because my impression of them was limited to romances that I didn’t enjoy at all. But this was the year I discovered the equivalent of “gen fic” kdrama- dramas that had wonderful ensemble casts, strong story lines that weren’t entirely romance focused and also a variety in terms of themes and styles. A big plus was that I found so many of these dramas had women leading the writers’ room, and seeing the effect of that in the story telling. (Notable exceptions: a certain “star” writer who should please stop inflicting her badly written, formulaic crap on the world, yes Kim Eun-Sook, I mean you, and whoever wrote that trashfire Flower of Evil)

So here I am with my own rec list! Caveat- these are mostly not the dramas released in 2020, I’m still playing catch up! :)

Under the cut for length

My Mister/ My Ahjussi (2018, Written by Park Hae-Young, Directed by Kim Won-Seok, starring Lee Sun-kyun and Lee Ji-eun aka IU)

This was definitely my absolute favourite of the shows I watched this year across western/ asian media. It’s a story about the thread that binds us all and the ineffability of human connection. It’s also a story that deconstructs ideas of masculinity and honour and shame in a non-western context, but with an extremely compassionate touch. It’s a story that doesn’t shy away from showing the consequences of material and spiritual poverty; and how one can so easily feed into the other. It’s a love story that isn’t a romance, except that it’s a Romance. It’s about finding salvation in one another and in the kindness of strangers. It’s about choosing life, and picking yourself up off the floor to take that one last step and then the next and then the next. The one quibble I have with the series is that it could have been better paced, it does get extremely slow after the half way mark. But god, do they land the ending. Both Lee Sun-kyun and IU turn in absolutely heartbreaking performances, and fair warning, be prepared to go through an entire box of tissues watching this series.

Life (2018, written by Lee Soo-yeon and directed by Hong Jong-chan, starring Lee Dong-wook, Cho Seung-woo, Won Jin-ah, Lee Kyu-hyung, Yoo Jae-myung and Moon So-ri.)

Medical dramas are very much not my thing, and I wouldn’t have taken a chance on it except that @michyeosseo said I should, and she was right! It’s a medical drama in the sense that it’s set in a hospital, but rather than a “case-fic” format, this is actually a sharp commentary on the corporatization of health care, and the business of mixing, well, money and what should be a fundamental human right. Writer Lee Soo-yeon was coming off the global success of Stranger/Secret Forest S1 when this aired, so I understand that expectations were probably sky-high, and people were disappointed when this show didn’t give them the adrenaline rush that they wanted. On the other hand, I thought that this outing was really much more nuanced in terms of the politics and also how the ending doesn’t allow you the luxury of easy-fixes. This show has a great ensemble cast, and while it took me a while to get used to Lee Dong-wook’s woodenness (i ended up calling him mr.cadaver after watching this and was surprised to learn that he’s very popular?), in the end I was quite sold on his version of angry angst-bucket elder-sibling Dr.Ye Jin-woo. His best scenes were with Lee Kyu-hyung who turns in a lovely, achy performance as the paraplegic Dr. Ye Seon-woo who just wants to live a normal life. The love story between the two brothers is actually the emotional backbone of the story, and I think they landed that perfectly.

My one quibble with writer-nim is that she ended up writing in a forgettable and somewhat (for me at least) uncomfortable romance between the characters played by Won Jin-ah and Cho Seung-Woo. I think part of my uncomfortable-feeling was that I got the strong sense that the writer herself didn’t want to write this romance, it was as if she was being made to shoe-horn it in for Studio Reasons, and she basically grit her teeth and did the worst possible job of it. I do wish we could have absolutely had the OT3 of my dreams: Moon So-ri/Cho Seung-woo/Yoo Jae-myung like, c’mon TV gods MAKE IT HAPPEN, just...look at them!!!!

Anyway, that apart, I think this was a very engaging series, and by engaging, I also mean thirst-enabling, see below.

Stranger (aka Secret Forest or Forest of Secrets) S1 & 2 : (2017-, Written by Lee Soo-yeon, directed by

2017′s smash hit aired a much anticipated second season in 2020, and I managed to catch up just in time to watch that live, so that was thrilling :D . Writer Lee Soo-yeon mixes up thriller/office comedy/political commentary in an ambitious series. I think S1 is more “exciting” than S2 in terms of the mystery and pacing, but S2 is far more dense and interesting in terms of political commentary because it takes a long hard look at institutional corruption and in true writer-nim fashion doesn’t prescribe any easy solutions. Anyway, please enjoy public prosecutor Cho Seung-woo and police officer Bae Doona as partners/soulmates kicking ass and taking names in pursuit of Truth, Justice and just a goddamn peaceful meal, along with a stunningly competent ensemble cast. Also yes, Han Yeo Jin is a lesbian, sorry, I don’t make the rules.

Search: WWW (2019, Written by Kwon Do-Eun, directed by Jung Ji-hyun & Kwon Young-il, starring Im Soo-jung, Lee Da-hee, Jeon Hye-jin)

GOD. Where do I start? +1000 for writer Kwon Do-Eun saying “fuck the patriarchy” in the most grandiose way possible, i.e. absolutely refusing to acknowledge that it exists. Yes, this is that power fantasy, and it’s also a fun, slice-of-life tale about three women navigating their way through work, romance, national politics and everything in between. It’s true that I wasn’t entirely sold on the amount of time spent on the romance, and I really wish they’d actually had a textual wlw romance, though the subtext through the entire series is PRACTICALLY TEXT. But still, it maintains that veneer of plausible deniability and I think queer fans who are sick of that kind of treatment in media have a very valid grouse against the show. On the other hand, personally I felt that the queer-platonic vibe of the show is very wonderful and true to real life, and it was only reinforced by the ending. This is a show written by a woman for women (like me), and it shows.

Hyena (2020, Written by Kim Roo-Ri, directed by Jang Tae-yoo & Lee Chang Woo, starring Kim Hye-soo and Ju Ji-hoon )

Those of you who’ve been watching hit zombie epic Kingdom are probably familiar with Ju Ji-hoon’s brand of sexiness already. I had not watched Kingdom and got hit in the face by Mr.Sexy McSexyPants’ turn as a brash, privileged-by-birth, up and coming lawyer who gets completely runover by the smoking hot and incredibly dangerous fellow lawyer/competitor from the other side of the tracks in the person of Kim Hye-Soo. When I say they set the room on fire, I mean it, ok. Every single scene between these two is an actual bonfire of sexual attraction and emotional hand grenades, and they’re both absolutely riveting to watch. “Flower of Evil” wishes they had what this show has- an actual grown up romance as opposed to a thirteen year old twilight fan’s idea of an adult romance.

The “lawyer” shenanigans and the “cases” are hit or miss, and I think the occasional comedy fell flat for me. But that’s not why I mainlined like 6 episodes of this series overnight like a coke addict, and that’s not why you’re going to do it either. It’s so RARE, even in these enlightened days to find a female character like Jung Geum-ja: hard as nails, unapologetic about it, and not punished by the narrative for it. The best part for me is that she feels like a woman’s woman, not a man’s idea of what a Strong Female Character should be. Anyways, when I grow up I want to have what Kim Hye-soo has ok?

Other dramas that I watched this year, quickly rated:

The King: Eternal Monarch (3/10 and those 3 points are only for the combined goodness of second leads who deserved better- Jung Eun Chae, Woo Do Hwan and Kim Kyung Nam. Please head over to my AO3 and read my attempts to fix this garbage fire and rescue their characters from canon)

Flower of Evil (-10/100, dont @ me)

Tale of the Nine Tailed (5/10, I think it succeeds at what it set out to do, which is a light hearted, sweet fantasy-romance-melodrama, plus “second lead” Kim Beom will make you cry as the hot mess of a half human/ half fox spirit ALL TEARS character. I think if you’re into kdrama romances as a genre, this is probably a good bet?)

Signal (7/10, This was the first full kdrama I watched this year and would definitely recommend. It’s a police procedural with time travel shenanigans and has an engaging plot, good pacing, texture and compelling performances. My one disappointment with it was the way they wrote Kim Hye-soo’s character. As literally the only female character to survive in any way, she was given short shrift, and toward the end it really began to grate on me.)

Six Flying Dragons - (7/10, also would recommend if you’re interested in Korean historicals. It definitely already feels a bit dated in terms of styling and production values, and even scripting and acting choices. But it has a good balance of fantasy and history and political commentary. I was not a fan of Yoo In-Ah’s performance in this series, but it’s not anything that would make you want to nope out of the series. It’s GoT , if GoT was thoughtful about politics and characters and not the misogynist, racist trashfire that it became.)

My Country: The New Age - (3.5/10, and that’s 3 points to Jang Hyuk’s fan and 0.5.points to Woo Do Hwan’s heaving bosom. If you like your historical drama/fantasy with very pretty men, very gay subtext -seriously RIP to show makers who thought they could hetero it but didn’t account for Woo Do Hwan’s Tragic Face- lots of blood and tears and very nonsense plot, this is right up your alley. I probably would have enjoyed it more in other circumstances, I think? But this one just annoyed me too much at the time!

I have a couple of more dramas to watch on my list, that’ll probably carry me over into 2021, so see ya on the other side! :D
