Faebruary 3 - Ice

He was no stranger to the cold. He had grown up in a kingdom bereft of its princess, raised on bitter mourning and icy despair. Before he had even grown into his magic, his father had traded him away to the princess’s kidnapper for secondhand armor. The callous look on his father’s face as he’d struck the deal had been most chilling not because it was new, but because it was familiar. His mother’s miserable acquiescence was as much expected as it was a betrayal. A fairy’s word is binding, and Dameon was the true traitor for running away.

He had always known the beetle would catch him eventually. After all the cold he was raised in it was only fitting he was now encased in ice, trapped in the beetle’s keep, helplessly awaiting the day he would melt and his wings would be cut off.

He hoped she had run. He hoped the princess– and she was the princess, he was sure of it, after all that had happened with the mouse, the mole, the bird, and the butterfly– he hoped she was far, far away, somewhere spring had already come. Somewhere bright and blooming and beautiful, somewhere the ice would never reach. Somewhere the beetle would never find her. Somewhere the treachery and cowardice of the fairy court would never touch her. He hoped she was happy.

He didn’t dare hope to see her again.

But he did. She strode in with her needle flashing, the green blood of the beetle dripping from it. She cleaned it on her skirt, and reached up to sheath it, and she tossed her braid over her shoulder as she did it and he realized, first, that he loved her.

He loved her, and second, she had come to rescue him, and he felt warmth blooming in his chest, and there was not a depth of cold in Aia that could keep him from melting.

Day 28 - ...Myself!

UUUUH, YEA! I blanked and decided I wanted to draw a fairysona! Surprised I haven’t done this before!

So yea, I wanted to draw a fairy version of myself! I figured this could be the way I would draw myself if I was set in the MagicCraft story, perhaps. Oh, and the wings are inspired by the Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing! Fitting, right?

Well, dang it to heck, after I managed to post every day for Goblin Week 2022, I then went almost the whole month of February without posting at all.  Well, among other things, I’ve been working on a project I can’t post about yet, and in general things have just been very busy... still, I probably could have, and should have, found time to draw more.  Especially as it turns out that February included the drawing challenges of “Faebruary” and “Funguary“, and fairies and fungi are two of my favorite things.  (I have a lot of favorite things.  Though it could be argued that if I have that many favorite things, then none of them are really favorites.  Whatever.)

Anyway, I figured I should at least post something before February’s over, and while I’ve still got an awful lot to do and might not have time to make two drawings today, I could maybe at least do one drawing that combined the two themes.  So I did.  I went with the last item on @feefal‘s Week 4 Funguary list, “Veiled Lady”, and while there were a number of different Faebruary prompt lists out there (not surprising, I guess, since “Faebruary” does seem like the sort of thing a lot of people could come up with independently), I went with one from one “gaymothart” on Twitter, for which the last day’s prompt was “Joyful”.  Or I was going to, but honestly I kind of forgot about that while I was drawing this.  I guess the fairy in question looks happy enough, but maybe not really joyful.  Oh well.

(I’d considered how, with the “veil” around her, the fairy could have wings—or reach her arm out.  Then I figured, eh, she’s a fairy; she’s magic; she can just pass her appendages through the veil, because why not.)

I’ve got to make time to draw more next month.  I wish I’d done more Faebruary and Funguary prompts this month.  Next year, if those events are happening again, I’ll be sure to get more in...
