It's so fucking funny, the only 'evidence' they have are old tweets from a third party. Just admit you're mad it wasn't you he married and go lmao

They don’t care how ridiculous they look. I can’t believe they’re doubling down instead of moving on, or starting over. If you don’t want to be his fan anymore, that’s fine, but there is no need to slander people who have a little connection to the situation and the people involved.

I wish Alba’s camp and Chris, in particular, were more litigious. But I guess that would just lead to more trouble in the long run. Better for Chris to deactivate and ignore them, and carry on living his best life with the woman he loves.

😑 well! Checked the ofmd meta tag after getting this passive-aggressive ask and realized that folks are indeed talking about this particular essay I wrote (super cool, actually!) and latching onto a single description about Ed’s hair in order to dismiss it as a racist interpretation (not so cool!). Yes, I do think the ask and these complaints are connected.

So I’m giving this its own post because:

(1) I have no bone to pick with the way Izzy’s shitty behavior towards Ed makes people feel and there doesn't seem to be an invitation for different viewpoints in posts like the one linked in this sentence. Which is fine! I've written meta like that too. And…

(2) I want to offer a space for a discussion thread for ppl who may want to have a back-and-forth about how Izzy’s words impacted Ed. Obviously I have thoughts about it and am open to an exchange of ideas. The cool thing about media analysis/meta is that it offers a safe buffer/platform through which to explore difficult real-life topics with other people.

So yeah. Anyone wanna talk about glaring issues with my essay about how Ed’s authority and power carry more weight than the knocks that Izzy's and Stede's actions had against his self-esteem?

i remember a while back, there was an anon on your blog who talked about being scared of entering fandom spaces right now and also talking about characterization, analysis, metas and so forth.

i can't find the particular ask but seriously, that convo opened my eyes a lot. characterization matters to me and i always felt like an asshole for saying why i did not like the way fanon is seen as the holy gospel truth while pretending as if canon, themes, characterization, relationships, development and storytelling itself is negligible. it felt sorta freeing to read that those things can be wrong. there is no singular way to tell a story, but those characteristics serve as a guide especially since you're working with some limits if you're writing about a particular book/series.

on top of this though, your blog lowkey made me realize why it's been hard for me to interact with fandom but also free myself. i had a tough upbringing and my boundaries were always discarded. i literally could not tell my preferences, so now that i can safely expore my preferences and talk about why i like/dislike something, it's sorta scary. i feel like i'm serving as my own jailer, but the epiphany itself is giving me some ideas. i hope i can work towards openly engaging in fandom and consuming content without feeling anxious, but your blog has been such a comfort!

I feel so weird admitting this but I have such a hard time creating and even wrapping my head around headcanons that aren't supported by the text. I guess it's because characterization is really important to me, and even though we can interpret things different regarding characters, there are some core unchanging factors about them, who they are and how they approach things.

It's kind of interesting to see fanon as this subjective characterization which might not even relate to the character but instead the readers own personal wishes, experience or what they want to experiment with. The actual text though shows an objective view of who the character is. I hope I understood this correctly from what I remember of one of your older asks.

I guess characterization isn't as negligible as fandoms act as if it is. Otherwise, we're not really reading about the characters we love. I didn't realize how characterization can be a good hallmark of a writer.

Sorry for the ramble!

I think it depends on the person and why people engage with fandom. I too am drawn to characterization above all else, so I also tend to bristle and grumble grumble about takes or fanons I see that I don't think are textually supported. That said, I don't know that I'd quite say character views are objective--people themselves are complex, and the best characters are as well. There are lines between different interpretations and misreading, to be sure, but where those are are hard to stake out, if that makes sense.

I say this objectively :P But again, my experience is a bit... spicier. The next time I see a take saying "Daemon is NOT a hero in any way" or "Penny and Ruby have romantic subtext" or "Aemond was one-note cartoonish in the book so making him "accidentally" kill Luke was actually a good twist," I'm going to go full dracarys. :P

It sounds to me like you have the makings of a good meta writer, actually ;) I channel my thoughts and feelings into meta, as I've said before, and also to help myself better understand the works and characters I love so. In doing so, I challenge myself too, and sometimes change my opinions, sometimes don't.
