Sometimes, living under late-stage capitalism is just like. I'm tired of being asked to spin straw into gold in exchange for a plate of stale, soggy bread crust.

#i genuinely like my day job #but (rant ahead) every month i am being asked to do more and more with less and less #i am being scraped thinner and thinner #and the customers are somehow getting a more raw deal over time too! #i'm honestly watching for my company to accidentally cross that lovely invisible line where people get fed up with the service #and finally abandon it all at once #like with the warner thing #management thinks that if they boil the frog slowly enough it will never notice #i think eventually the frog says to itself “this sauna is too hot wtf” and jumps out #girl i just want to clean and do maintenance and count money and do a few customer's laundry for them . . . and ideally have days off #my days off. got halved since feb. i had four days off in march. TWO OF THEM WERE FOR SURGERY AND RECOVERY. #i am doing 90% of certain kinds of work for the store and 100% of other kinds #and i had to work with a potential concussion because i knew no-one could fill in #if they don't give me that week off in may then i am walking out and letting the store i am single-handedly holding up #c r u m b l e

What art style are we looking for? What is the estimated timeline? Will you get paid? we answer them here!

We will be answering more questions and posting them in the days leading up to the artist application form opening. So if you have questions, use our inbox, or you can fill in our interest form and leave them at the bottom. And if you have queries for the frog, you can leave them there too. He is very busy, so keep that in mind.

What type of artists are you looking for? And are you after a specific style or a range of styles?

We are looking for artists who can create pieces with fully rendered fairies and a background within the specified schedule. These can be digital artworks that are flat colour artworks, paintings, a mixture, or another style entirely.

We will also accept mixed media and traditional artworks, but they will need to be scanned at a minimum of 300dpi.

When you sign up for an artist position, are there any requirements to be a part of the team?

E-mail communication is required (discord is optional).

You must have a PayPal account to receive payment.

You must be able to communicate comfortably in English.

You must be 18 or older at the time of signing the contract by the 16th of February.

For artists accepted into the zine what would be the timeline for completing and submitting artwork?

Our current schedule for the artists requires concept ideas to be submitted by Feb 16th, and the final version by May 16th! Progress check-ins will be on Feb 29th, March 21st, and April 11th.

(In the image there is also a table including this information as well as the final submissions date being May 16th)

When the zine is for sale, where would the profits go to (charity, zine admin, etc.)?

We are aiming to hold pre-orders in June/July of 2024, with a flat fee paid to all contributors and additional proceeds split between contributors and mods.

Our priority is to make sure each contributor is paid fairly for their work. If sales do well enough, 20% will be used for future books and projects, and 80% split between taxes and fees, production costs, contributors and shipping costs.

Is this physical or digital and will there be prints of the art available? Got any merch ideas planned to go along with the zine?

Both physical and digital! Our goal is to make a 210 x 148 mm (A5) perfect-bound soft cover book.

We also plan to add some paper merch, including prints of some of the art from the book. Additional merch ideas include stickers, sticker sheets and bookmarks.

Jily Microfic - Sentimental

It was not difficult to know what James Potter liked, as he never stopped talking about himself. So of course Lily knew that his favorite team was Puddlemere United, his favorite dessert was sticky toffee pudding, his favorite spot was the very top of the quidditch stands at sundown, and his favorite chocolate frog card to get was Salazar Slytherin, because he enjoyed repeatedly flicking him in the face. Anyone plagued by his proximity, Lily was sure, would know these things as well.

The difficult task had been deciding which of his favorites to use, but in the end, dessert seemed the obvious choice.

Lily arrived at their shared office twenty minutes before they were set to meet. Charming the pudding and sauce to stay warm and the ice cream to stay cold, she set the plate at his desk, ready and waiting for when he came in.

“What’s this?" James asked, standing beside his desk and pointing at the plate. His eyebrows were knit in confusion, but Lily thought she saw a grin waiting in the rafters. 

Lily leaned back in her desk chair and said, "Happy anniversary," as way of an answer. 

An eyebrow flicked skyward, and Lily relished in James’s awkward hesitation before he replied,  "...Anniversary?"

"Yes," she said, and stood to join him by his desk. “Don’t you remember?”

The paused grin had disappeared altogether now, his expression one of total bewilderment. “Er… No.” His hand went to his hair, and Lily’s heart did a small flip, as it always did when she elicited his infamous fidget. 

“This day last year was the first time – and only – time you made a potion better than mine,” she explained, speaking as though it should have been obvious. “I thought it worthy of celebration.”

His face split into an amused grin. “I didn’t know you were so sentimental, Evans.” 

She shrugged, smiling to herself. “It was a once in a lifetime sort of moment.”

He snorted. “Quite a claim when we’ve got a lot longer to go in this lifetime.”

“Mm,” she hummed, “I’m not worried.”

Looking down at the dessert again, James glanced at her from the corner of his eye. “Did you know sticky toffee pudding’s my favorite?”

Lily crossed her arms. “Really?” She shook her head. “How funny. Lucky guess, I suppose.”

“Yeah,” he replied, lifting the spoon with a smirk. “Lucky guess.”

I haven't written a microfic in over a month but I'm so bored in a night class so here we go.

Sirius is staring up at the crimson curtains around Remus’ bed, unable to sleep.

“Rem?”

Remus groans.

“Lily said that dogs can’t eat chocolate.”

“You’re not a real dog, Pads, you’ll be fine” Remus mumbles into his pillow.

“If I eat it as a human, yes, but what if I eat it as Padfoot?”

Remus opens one eye to look at his boyfriend and raises his eyebrow. “Then don’t eat chocolate as Padfoot?” he says, matter-of-fact-ly.

Sirius turns his face towards Remus, looking very guilty, and that wakes Remus up properly.

“Sirius? What did you do?”

“I had a chocolate frog as Padfoot while you were in the shower. I needed to know for sure! But now I’m too scared to fall asleep.” and Remus can hear real fear in his voice, so he pulls Sirius until he’s draped all over him.

“Here,” he presses a kiss into his hair, and Sirius can feel his smile on his head. “That way I can feel if you stop breathing in your sleep.”

Paul and Linda, a collection of PDAs: Part 1 - Kisses

In our walk down the memory lane of Paul and Linda’s love story, which still captivates the romantics and the expressive artists out there, we start with an excerpt of an interview.

Rolling Stone cover June 17, 1976: “Yesterday, Today, and Paul.” In this interview, Paul says something interesting:

I mean, I kissed Linda onstage the other night, and for me, that’s kind of, ‘Wow, I must be getting real relaxed,’ ’cause I can’t do that in public, normally. I’m a bit kinda shy.

Paul McCartney shy about showing affection? Well, artists are certainly a different breed. He can sing a heartfelt love song in a venue full of people, but has to work up the courage to give his wife a little kiss? As photos will tell, he soon got over that quirk.

And even before this RS interview, he could certainly be demonstrative when a photographer or videographer was around, whereas the average person would be more guarded knowing that their tender moment would soon be out there as a picture in a magazine or a video clip on TV (we’re talking pre-internet days here).

What's one photo you're really proud of? Robert Rosen: I love the shot of Paul and Linda McCartney kissing. As soon as I had it developed I just thought, wow, I did that. I sent them a print but didn't hear anything more until a few months later, when, Paul and Linda turned up to a gallery event I happened to be at. At one point, Linda tapped me on the shoulder and said, 'Are you ignoring us?' She gave me a big hug and told me they loved the photo. That obviously meant a great deal to me.

Socks!

I absolutely love knitting socks, and since knitting some lovely baby socks (link), I have fallen in love with cuff down socks. My goal this year is to knit a pair of socks each month, and so far so good! I finished my first march sock on the third of march, so maybe even better than good!

For both february and march I used the A Nice Ribbed Sock pattern on ravelry by Glenna C. I did modify the toe a little bit to my liking, see the february socks.

Here are my february socks:

As you can see on the left, the toe was too narrow and kind of stood out from my actual toes. I have always preferred a bit of a wider toe, so I frogged a few rows and tried again. On the right, I only decreased to 28 sts before kitchering the toe closed, instead of 20 sts on the left. I much prefer this feeling and look, so I will be knitting it like this for the rest of the year.

Here are my march socks:

Top left 26 feb, top right 27 feb, bottom left 28 feb, bottom right 1 march, finished march 2nd. Keep in mind, this was over an hour of knitting each day (basically all my free time outside of school).

This yarn is by Hetwolbeest, my favourite indie dyer (Netherlands based), although I'm not sure if she still sells this colourway (Plum on basic sock). I do think she has something similar in her shop right now though!

Still on track to knit a pair of socks a month, as I started on the second april sock last week. I can't knit a lot right now though, as my arm/shoulder/neck hurt quite a bit.
