FHR Flash Prompt: Nightmares (Ricardo POV) Pairing: Chargestep Warnings: TW for death, suicide, blood, violence, general mindfuckery/unreality Word Count: 584 Prompt: Write a nightmare... from the perspective of your Sidestep's RO, that includes Sidestep somehow--can be Sidestep as the villain, or some HB-esque dream hellscapes, so on and so forth.

Sidestep.

It's what she's best at, even when she can't predict you.

Too slow like always. You grasp air. The window shatters across her face. You reach, you howl, you fail. Skin flays, blood flies, she falls.

A sound like a cantaloupe splitting on pavement.

You wake with a scream.

You scream. She screams.

It doesn't stop this time.

Being eaten alive is a fresh hell you wouldn't wish on anyone.

Up your arm, under your suit, layer by layer, cell by cell, you vanish and she does too. Like ether she evaporates into nothing. Fades, suit and all, as you drown in your own spilled blood.

You wake with a gasp.

A startled gasp as you round the corner and find her in the open apartment. You rush over, she can't mean to—

"Riley, stop! What are you doing?"

Cold hands in yours, cold like stone and just as immovable. The gun, you have to get it away from her. Glassy eyes stare at nothing. Respond to nothing. It's inside her and you can't reach in and pry it out.

"Please, I'm here, don't give in! Riley, look at me—"

You can't budge her. Everything happens in slow motion. The gun stays firm in her mouth, her finger twitches, blinding green flashes—

You lurch upright, awake, alone.

Alone. She's fighting him alone.

You can't feel your legs, you can't get up, you can't save her as the Void plucks her from distorted space by the throat.

She struggles, kicks, scrabbles against their gloves, chokes behind her mask and you can't get up.

You can't save her.

"Don't worry, little hero. You won't be alone for long." They turn to you as she falls limp from their grasp.

You wake with a sob.

"Hey, what's… are you crying?"

Fists clench on the table and you don't dare turn around. She'll vanish like she always does. You've dreamed this dream too many times.

"I miss you."

Miss. Surely there's a better word for the gaping hole her absence carved in your heart. You can't think of it now.

"What's that mean? I just got here. What's going on?"

"You're gone."

Fingers burrow in your curls and you shiver. Don't look. Bury your face in the crook of your arm. If you don't look, she won't go.

"I'm right here, idiot."

Don't look, don't wake, just linger in the feel of her fingertips massaging their way back to your neck. Out to the sides and arms coil around your shoulders. Her head presses to yours. She's so warm.

"You're not." You can't even pretend your voice isn't wavering. How does this feel so solid this time?

Lips ghost against your ear, an exhaled puff of a laugh and how are you even imagining this? Why is it so different now?

"How do you know if you don't look?"

Your eyes open slowly. Like if you sneak up on the apparition, it won't have time to vanish. Clenched scarred hands just starting to gnarl greet you on the table.

You're getting older. She never will.

A surreptitious glance over your shoulder and she is. There. Older. Silver hairs peeking in at her temples, as bright as the tired crows-feet framed eyes looking down at you with concerned amusement.

You lurch from the chair and crush her to your chest. She tightens in surprise but settles into it and returns the embrace.

"Hey. Hey? You okay?"

"Just a rough night." Years of them, all catching up with you.

Fallen Hero Drabble - Chen x Ricardo x Aridam

Y’all is there a ship name for these three? I’m gonna pretend there is in the tags haha.

To make up for what was supposed to be a way more fluffy drabble than it turned out to be.

“Whose turn for me to show off tomorrow night? You two decide yet?” Ricardo called from the other room where he was cooking dinner.

Chen looked down at Aridam, whose head was resting in his lap where he lay sprawled on the couch. Aridam smirked and held up one fist against his flat palm.

“I think there are better ways of solving this than rock, paper, scissors,” he scoffed but a smile playing on his face.

“Scared you’ll lose?” Aridam challenged with a smirk.

With a sigh, Chen matched Aridam’s gesture and counted them off. One, two, three.

“Ha! Scissors beats paper! Suck it!” Aridam crowed bringing Ortega into the room to see the commotion.

Ortega placed a hand to his chest, in mock shock, to tease Aridam. “You really want to avoid going out with me that much?”

“You really think you are that earth shatteringly handsome that I wanna go to one of those boring ass events?”

Turning back to Chen he ignored Ortega faux hurt look and asked, “What event do you suppose it is this time? The 25th Annual Geriatric Hero Awards?”

“Hey!”

“Maybe the Beard and Moustache Awards?”

They both looked over at Ortega who was touching his moustache and in unison said nah and went back to discussing options. Continuing to ignore Ortega’s protests and laughing as he walked out of the room mumbling and cursing in Spanish about how they were always ganging up on him.

Aridam reached out to pet the top of Spoon’s head where the lazy thing lay across his legs. Trying to find his equilibrium. He wasn’t used to being this happy. To having these sorts of emotions flooding through him. He closed his eyes and Chen reached out to gently brush as fingertip across the creases on Aridam’s face.

“Don’t go there,” he said quietly.

Chen silently sat willing Aridam’s mind to calm upon recognizing the need that often overwhelmed Aridam to run at the slightest hint of being loved and safe.

“Wasn’t,” Aridam whispered back.

He wasn’t really. Sure, it was always there. That desire to bolt but not really right now. It was just happy right now. Focusing on the soft presence of Spoon, the static hum of Ortega’s mind as he started singing, slightly off key, in the kitchen, and the feel of Chen’s hand running tenderly along his face he took a deep breath.

“I really wasn’t,” Aridam reiterated, taking Chen’s hand in his and holding it against his chest. “Thinking maybe this time we go. All of us. You, me, and the old man.”

“That’s not like you,” Chen puzzled over this new, unusual request.

“I know. But maybe he deserves this. We aren’t the easiest two people to get on with.”

Aridam laughed at Chen’s smile and at the thought that Ortega would be interested in either of them. And he knew Chen felt the same way. Why was a question they often discussed. But maybe why wasn’t the question to be asked. Maybe it was time they just give in and accept that why doesn’t matter.

“You will have to wear a suit, you know,” Chen mused.

“So will you. And socks.”

Chen scowled are the idea and scratched the scar on his jawline that he always did at the thought of an uncomfortable situation. Aridam cupped his cheek and leaned up to kiss him.

“I won’t wear socks so you don’t have to either,” he mumbled into the kiss. “Now who has to be the one to suffer Sparkles’ smugness and tell him we are both accompanying him?”

Chen kissed Aridam softly once more before holding out a fist on a flat palm with a smirk on his face.

BRO I READ SO MANY WIPS......I’ll try to recommend some finished ones if i have any but be warned its mostly wips

From a previous ask:

Monsters of New Haven High - You can play as different monsters and I just really liked the vibe of it. There’s some flirting happening but no romances per se.

From Ashes we Rise - There’s some flirting, no romance, but it kinda has a Fallen Hero vibe and I really love the story and the MC!

Empty Shell - The MC is so cool, I really like them (but like maybe thats just me sohiosdusd) There’s 4-5 (I dont remember exactly) romance path you can take or not at all. The seriousness of that romance depends on who you pick! I only did 2 characters and my 1st run was very romance oriented and the second one was probably gonna be explored later.

Guenevere - I think you would have already played it but just in case….It’s really good and a lot of content! (1 book and a half!) And the romance is there >:3c Right now, there’s 3 ROs that I know of.

AMYGDALA: Encode - There’s no romance (yet?) BUT its made by a friend and its super good and a whole new take of the zombies story which I love and its fantastic! So if you wanna check it out ;w;…

3150 Dahlia St. - Some romance elements , some characters more than others, there’s a lot ROs and a lot of choices. The story is good but maybe hard to follow at times (It was for me sdiosdhisdo) [it has since then been discontinued]

A Witch’s Curse - There is definitely romance but since its a wip it’s not fully developed , and the story is captivating as well!

Son of Satan: The Mortal Coil - No romance per se there will be in the final product, but lots of content and torrid flings ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Fox of Sunholt - it’s really funny , there’s no romance yet but you can flirt and fluster some nobles which is always good.

Otherwise, some that are out uuhhh,,,

There’s of course, Wayhaven but you’ve played that for sure.

Evertree Inn and Sordwin (EI is the first book! There’s a third one planned); there’s romance but the mysteries in the world takes focal point! I’ve enjoyed both of them though. They’re kinda like DnD one shot stories?

Maybe Zombie Exodus: Safe Haven, I’ve seen some people really like some the romance in there - personally the story doesnt interest me as much as some others and the way we gotta pay for story parts (Instead of paying the whole story you gotta pay by parts) which isnt that big of a deal bc writers gotta live and I understand that but for me it wasnt worth it.

There’s Heart of the House, I haven’t finished but it’s good so far! I know there’s some romance but where I’m at, we haven’t really delved into that completely so I can’t really say. You’re in search of your uncle in a very strange town.

Tally Ho, is another one. There’s 3 ROs I think? I haven’t finished it either but the story is nice and I love two of the ROs a LOT! You play as a butler and your life is full of Drama.

I remember liking Creatures such as We a lot but its been a couple of years since I’ve played it. There’s romance, and 4 or 5 ROs? They’re all unique and includes an older one which is kinda rare? It’s free, when I looked it for the link I noticed its free once and then you have to pay (it was free when I got it the first time like 5 years ago iodhsdiosdio) and you play as a Space Guide of sorts.

I’ve seen people highly recommend The Eagle’s Heir , personally the whole historical facet of the story kinda threw me off and I had difficulty following but it’s good its just that my brain found it Hard™ but the ROs are cute ! And I noticed it was on sale until July 9! So if it interests you, get it now!

And new stuff:

Greenwarden - MC feels a bit like sidestep, you know whole true disaster, and it has similar trigger warnings as The Passenger? Only one chapter out so far, but definitely one i would keep my eyes on!

Regrets of the traitor - Its been a bit since ive read it, i dont know if it has updated recently, I dont think so? It has a fair bit of content and I really liked it, you play a ‘villain’ if you choose to do so. And the mc is very interesting to me!

Monsters - Old, so I doubt it’ll ever be updated now, but the story has stuck with me (i read it like a few months ago), I’d be careful reading it if youre sensible to gore,violence,etc. Not a lot of character customization? but the story really pulls you in, or maybe it was just me.

Model Citizens: Unmasked - The story was really pulling me in and it finished on a cliffhanger so i was kinda smad, which is a good thing bc it means i really wanted to continue you know? Its a superhero/villain story but youre not one, you’re a bystander with a purpose.

I haven’t read finished ones in a good while (mostly bc there’s none that interests me at a first glance) but ive been really into reading Breach: The Archangel Job for the past 2 nights (3 tonight, i think ill finish today :’) ) You play someone in a gang and shit goes down! The writing style is a bit meme-y and like referential to pop culture? but it doesnt make it unreadable and there’s a D20 mechanic involved in the game so your choices can go horribly wrong like in dnd! On the more expensive side as Cogs goes 9+$

Otherwise All-World Pro Wrestling, it made me laugh a lot, but if you want a real like deep story line, this is not it. It’s gay ! Really its mostly sex and wrestling as foreplay?

“What’s your problem with Julia, anyway?” Angie stares down at you, head in her lap. You stiffen, intimately aware of the nails brushing against your scalp, fingers enmeshed in your mess of black hair. It’d be so easy for her to take you out like this. Stupid. Letting your guard down. No one is nice to you without expecting payment in return, and now ‘Angie’ has come to collect.

“That shit’s ancient history.” Crow averts his eyes, caught between the need to put space between the two of them and the need to not give away any sign of discomfort. “Look, it’s not gonna change anything, so leave it alone. None of your business, hey?”

Nails against scalp, gentle - for now. “It is my business if it means you’re planning to put my friend in the hospital again.”

“Well, look, as long as she doesn’t get in my way, then there’s no problems, see?” Crow stretches his hands out above him, fingers interlocked together. Black nail polish reflecting the lamplight. Can’t believe Starshine talked you into that. Amazing, the leverage you’ve just casually handed an enemy.

“Mhm. If you say so, Catha.” She frowns, unsatisfied. More than that, you’re not sure. Sticking to this absurd promise to stay out of her head is another dumb move, and yet you’ve stuck with it so far. Why? Guilt? What do you have to be guilty about? You let your hands drop to your chest. You’re Macha, and everyone can either get out of the damn way or get crushed under foot.

You need to change the subject already.

Crow blows a strand of hair out of his eyes. “You’re the only one that calls me that.”

A twist of lips into a smile. Hint of a threat? So hard to read her face with the reflections. “That a problem? You’re the one that insists on calling me that dumb nickname.”

“Nothin’ wrong with a lil’ starshine, Starshine.” You wave a hand, “But if you insist, I’ll stop, hey?”

Beginning 2019 with the fulfillment of a long-time ambition of mine. Though at the turn of the century I worked for a wee while at the magazine operating in the offices next door (Bizarre), and having a couple of letters published and being mentioned in Karl Shuker’s Alien Zoo section (for hearing a ‘crowing lizard’ when I worked in the Philippines) and having a mention and a mugshot in Steve Toase’s review of the Folk Horror Revival - Otherworldly event at the British Museum, I have always wanted to have some of my work featured in Fortean Times, a magazine I have loved and subscribed to since the mid 1990s. This has now happened. ☻ Back in May 2018, at the haunted inn, The Black Swan of York, alongside John Pilgrim and Folk Horror Revival Emporium, Folk Horror Revival presented Swan Songs - an evening of very fine music featuring Sharron Kraus, Sarah Dean and Hawthonn. At this event FHR's resident lute player extraordinaire Peter Lagan introduced me to spiritualist and gentleman Gerald O'Hara, whom had in his possession an album of unpublished spirit photography by the master of the art, William Hope, with a view to Wyrd Harvest Press publishing it. The album is magnificent and much as I would love to publish it and as much as our books are quality, it deserves a far higher end of print production than WHP can offer to a rare and fragile artifact. I did however endeavour to try and get more attention to this fascinating artwork and so contacted Fortean Times. This month's issue features Gerald's and my endeavor to bring attention to this beguiling tome of images. Hopefully it will garner the attention of a high-end art book publishing house that will deliver the entire 98 photograph album to a wider eye. 👁👁 And hopefully my writing and / or art will again appear in the hallowed pages of Fortean Times. ☻
