I need to go on a rant about Lyon Fire Emblem for a moment bear with me.

So a lot of people do not like the Eirika route of Sacred Stones and on the surface, I can see why. On one hand there's the scene where Eirika gives over the Sacred Stone (which isn't relevant to my current point and also someone else has covered it before so I won't do so here) but the other point is that it misses out on the element of tragedy by making the demon king fully in control of Lyon's actions, fully divesting himself of responsibility.

Let me ask a question. Where in the text does it say that Lyon is fully taken over by the demon king, that doesn't also happen in the Ephraim route?

Yes Lyon claims to have been taken over by the demon king, and yes L'arachel believes there is no saving him, but that's the thing. That also happens in the Ephraim route, and he sure as heck isn't fully possessed there. He was acting, and I have no reason to believe he wasn't doing the same in the Eirika route.

Now some people may point to the fact that in the Eirika route, after chapter 17 we only ever see Lyon acting as the demon king, or acting as the demon king acting as Lyon, as evidence Lyon had to have been gone because he never surfaced. I have two counterpoints to this though. First off, it's a logical fallacy. Lyon never acting like Lyon during the Eirika route when we know he can act like the demon king thanks to the Ephraim route? That isn't evidence that Lyon is gone, it's the lack of evidence that he's still there. And the absence of evidence is not the evidence of absence.

Secondly there sure goddamn is evidence that he was still around. Because if Lyon's soul truly was destroyed, completely and utterly? Then he wouldn't be able to give that speech when he's defeated in the endgame. No, his soul is still somewhat intact by then.

This of course raises the question. If Lyon was still around, then why didn't he reveal himself? Well, if you'll recall, Lyon says himself that he didn't want to appear before Ephraim as Lyon. He wanted to appear before him as the Demon King. Ephraim manages to break through this veil, because he refuses to play his part in the play that Lyon expects.

And to be fair, the same could possibly be said for Eirika, but there's one difference. Lyon loves Eirika, in a way that isn't as tainted by his inferiority complex as his love of Ephraim is. He loves and hates Ephraim, but for Eirika, his love outweighs the hate. In addition, he knows that Ephrain would have the wherewithal to not be heartbroken, but I don't think he knows that Eirika has that same strength. All that combined, I think Lyon can't bear to drop the act for Eirika. He believes she'd be inconsolable to know her friend has sunk that low. So for Eirika, he never drops the act until the very end, while he's much more willing to drop the act for Ephraim.

In short, Lyon is a theater kid to a fault and a dramatic bitch to the very end, thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Lyon doesn't mean to shy away from your affection, it's just the first time that he feels the feather light touch of your fingers brushing against his, it electrifies him with such an unfamiliar feeling that he wants to take time to understand just what it is that pangs so deeply in his chest.

But of course due to him not communicating it with you, you don't actually hold his hand until some time after the accidental finger brushing. A sensation that gives him great joy, and makes his heart soar to great heights.

He isn't entirely sure how this new current scenario came about, he does know that his heart hasn't stopped hammering in his chest since it began. Him leaning his back against you, your legs either side of him as you run your fingers through his hair.

“Your hair is so soft.” You murmur. While he's entirely lost in the sensation of your fingers running through the strands, to the point where he doesn't even hear himself automatically say thank you for the compliment. Or when he agrees to let you style it.

Not that it matters. While your humming to yourself, styling his hair, he's growing to understand the fluttering in his chest is simply love making its presence known.
