The Ts'íts'àsh (Firish) Language from Elemental

Jessie Sams (@quothalinguist) and I created a language for Pixar's latest film Elemental. We created both a spoken language and writing system that are used in spots throughout the film. It's out today, so if you watch it, see if you can spot any of it! We had a lot of fun creating a language the requested "sound like fire". A tough thing to do with a human mouth, but we had some fun with it! Some language highlights:

My headcanons for other Elementals languages:

Assuming the English we hear and read is just the Water-language translated for our convenience, I imagine the actual language to have a phonetic library that invokes splashing noises, the crashing of waves, and the rushing of rivers; with a healthy dose of slurps and gulps thrown in.

The Earth-language sounds like rattling and cracking stones, groaning earth, and the snapping of twigs. Vowels are held in such a way as to make speech a slow and patient process and consonants are often rolled. Clicks are a prominent feature.

The Air-laguage is breathy and whispy. Expect the letter H to show up in every word and some phonemes require you to inhale inorder to pronounce them correctly.

Tigers are solitary hunters with a presence in Firish folklore. They can quickly ascend trees by attaching their fire to trunks and shooting along them.

Firefowl pick at seeds and burning insects. They gather in small flocks with equal populations of males and females. The smaller and brighter burning males compete for mates through displays of their sustained, energy-intensive raised temperature.

A firefowl egg appears as a dense charcoal with an internal ember, which ignites and consumes the egg within days, forming a new fowl.

The Tsí’tsà’sh word for ‘boat’, êbshà, originates from the name given to the shape of a beetle’s shell. It’s an orange-color orange-fruit situation. Burning boats are named as such for their flecked elytra and two whirling antennae.

Red princes will occasionally emerge from the charred forests to roam villages. They are only rivaled in strength by the tigers.

The Firish horse is short and stocky. When not at work, it will graze and clear dried vegetation to allow for new growth.

Thoughts I Have After Seeing Elemental For the First Time 😈🥬

Yes, there are spoilers below! If you have not seen the movie and have issues with spoilers, keep scrolling. Thank you!

That being said, let’s dive in!

🔥 Not only are her parents immigrants but they speak a made up language called Firish. As an Irish American person, I thought that was cute!

💧 The Manticore from Onward is no longer the most relatable character to service workers. That honor goes to Ember now.

🔥 Yes, customers are really this stupid and entitled. The sparkler buy one get one free scene is a gold star example of that.

💧 Wade Ripple is who more men should be like; sweet, sensitive, loving, devoted, and charming but also awkward in an adorable way.

🔥 I never laughed so hard at the death of a grandmother ever. That was definitely not written to be sad at all.

💧 Wade isn’t afraid to say how he feels about Ember in front of his entire family and that’s very ballsy but way too fast.

🔥 Their date was so precious and the song in that scene is repeating on Spotify right now.

💧 I love that they eat wood chips and drink lava coffee.

🔥 Those flowers are absolutely stunning. And so is Embers glasswork.

💧 The antics between Cinder and the Door Man were wonderful. The Door Man also looks like the most huggable water guy.

🔥 I went awwwww in my head when their hands touched for the first time. It was such a sweet moment and I didn’t like that things went south after that.

💧 Would they be able to have sex? Because from the beginning of the film, we know element women can physically get pregnant. So a water penis in a fire vagina does what? Would she evaporate it away?

🔥 The kiss they shared near the end if the film was so sweet. Honestly one of the best kissing scenes written by Pixar tbh, with apologies to Linguini and Collette.

💧 Do male earth elements grow floral pubic hair like their armpit hairs? Imagine having flowers for pubes.

🔥 What’s the wedding gonna be like? Because I bet Ember would walk down the aisle in a stained glass gown.

What if it looked something like this?? 👀🔥

💧 Ember loves her father but was trying too hard to make him proud. It was unfair for him to never ask her what she wanted out of life.

💧 Of course I wanted to cry when Wade started evaporating but I knew he’d come back somehow.

🔥 He went through all of that for her.

Ember trying to give her kids firish lessons, but she keeps losing her patients because they're kids and learning a new language is hard. So Wade suggests they take a break and watch T.V. He puts on a firish cartoon (anime) about a giant robot controlled by all four elements. The kids are intrigued but are frustrated that they can't understand what they are saying. Wade: "Well the only way to know what they're saying is if you speak firish." All of a sudden they are a lot more enthusiastic about mom's lessons, and Emeber and Wade just looking at each other like they got away with a crime.

Elemental (Pixar) Thoughts

Okay so . . . I think I have gathered my thoughts for Elemental after seeing it four (yes really) times over the weekend. Spoilers incoming.

I wasn't expecting much from the movie, hell, I wasn't even going to see it but I had just gotten out of watching Spiderverse 2 for the second time and wanted to watch something cleanse my pallet. The trailers and marketing didn't really get me excited as it just came off as a bland Romano & Juliet esque film with the main hook being the characters were made of elements. Then there were the first few early reviews I've heard that called the film bland and another miss for Pixar.

So you can say i had low expectations going in.

But I was so so wrong.

I came out of my first viewing tearfilled, giddy, and gobsmacked. The film that was being advertised was not the film I had just watched and . . . I loved the film I had just watched . . .

The whole conflict isn't romantic shenanigans between cute Ember and sweet Wade, although that is important part of it . . .

It's about Ember being the child of immigrants, growing up in a city that wasn't built with her people in mind and which can be down right terrible to her just because she was born fire. It's Ember's struggle to live up to her family expectations and trying to be a good daughter all while slowly discovering that thing she spent her whole life preparing to do, wasn't what she wanted to do.

Ember's journey is very touching and relatable, leaving me to think about it hours after the film.

Then there's Wade and by extension, their romance.

Wade is honestly one of the sweetest and most loveable romantic interests I've seen in a long time. He's very attuned to not only his emotions but the emotions of the people around him. He's not afraid to cry and goes out of his way to cheer up those around him. The chemistry between him and Ember felt natural as they slowly fell for one another.

If I hadn't saw the trailer with him trying to help pick up her headphones, I honestly wouldn't have expected him to become her love interest. They start off in conflict with him writing citations for her father's shop but he ends helping her in her quest to get the tickets overturned.

The looks in this film is godtier, like, they were able to make elements so expressable (Wade being my favorite with how they were able to convey that he holds his heart on his sleeve.)

And it felt very refreshing that there wasn't a main villian (cough cough Zootopia cough cough). The main conflict is character driven by the choices and consequences of Ember.

It's genuinely making me sad that this film is being panned by a lot of people as being bland Pixar and boring.

I really hope that the film does do well at the box office. It deserves it.

And just because a film has a simplistic plot, doesn't mean it's going to be bad. It's the execution of it that matters. Pixar is known for this.

For me, film was refreshing drink of water on a pleasant summer's day.

Okay quick fire of my favorite moments and or scenes:

• The soundtrack was really good! I loved the scores that had singing in what I think is suppose to be firish? It provokes Atlantis: The Lost Empire vibes in me and that's my favorite score of all time so I see that as a plus.

• The openning scene of Ember's parents immigrating to Element City really set the tone for the film and was done really well.

• Wade giving his uncle the "that was uncalled for/are you fuckin serious" look whenever the uncle mentioned Ember speaks so well. The rest of the family is AwkwardPartyReactionMeme.exe.

• Yes customers can be that stupid and infuriating in real life. They were able to capture that so well. I feel you Ember, I gotta deal people like that everyday, it sucks.

• Butterfly, Windshield Wiper, Half . . . A Butterfly

• Wade really pulled out all the stops, nearly freaking confessing his love for her infront of his family who had just met her just to win a game. Like damn, you go dude.

• "I made you a painting of a sad man . . ." Uncle gives Wade a painting. It's of Wade crying.

• Ember's mom being able to sniff out love is hilarious to me.

• Kiss me I'm Firish

I CANT BELIEVE I FORGOT TO WRITE THIS ONE! BLUE FLAME FORGIVE ME!

• Act of God or an act of Clooooood.

Elemental Spoilers

I noticed a couple of parallels or development tie-ins or what have you.

First of all, my sincerest compliments to the Elemental voice cast who made this movie work, especially its tenderest moments.

From minute one, Wade encourages Ember to be more open with him and with her loved ones and to relieve herself of that emotional weight.

When they're in the balloon, Ember teaches Wade the meaning of the Firish word "tìshók"- essentially, "embrace the light while it burns, because it won't always last forever" or, rather, because it's not guaranteed that things won't change or be lost. It encourages him to live his life more deliberately, like Ember does, but it's also focusing and condensing his views on how to interact with your loved ones, and helps him to pin down in words how he feels about expressing your innermost feelings later on- "you don't have forever to say what you need to say".

As a note, he also focuses her in return- literally, he focuses her light when he becomes a magnifying glass during the matchmaking reading, and just anytime he helps Ember root out the sources of her emotions.

so when Wade's talking to Ember on the beach, he says "I had regrets when my dad died" and pushes Ember to leave her comfort zone and be honest with her father.

And then, when they're trapped in the hearth, Wade tells Ember, "I have no regrets". Mostly pre-movie, but also during the movie, subtly, Wade has learned to fully utilize and embrace the ideology of tìshók. He's been emotionally vulnerable and honest with Ember. He loves her and he's taken advantage of every moment of it to care for her and help her.

Wade tries to show Ember the power of the one little word she taught him, a word she treated so casually when she explained it, every chance he gets. But it's not until she loses him that it sinks in. Not until she watches him slip out of her fingers, and she has true, deep, blatant, painful regrets, and he comes back with "I have no regrets. You gave me something people search their whole lives for" does she internalize all the time she's taken for granted, the time she's been telling herself throughout the movie she had, the time she used as an excuse not to be vulnerable- not to embrace the light.

It's at those moments of vulnerability, at the beginning and the end, with Wade, that we see her shining in a way like no other, revealing all the potential of the light inside her. Figuratively, of course, but also literally, with the refracted colors around them. They're never so intense as when Ember confesses to Wade that she loves him.

And then, Wade, in one sentence, says, "I love you, and I have loved each depth you've let me see of you, and I am so honored that you're willing to be so vulnerable and gentle with me", facing his own fading with perfect acceptance because he knew her and loved her with everything he had, and he understands that that's enough and he doesn't need to give her more.

And that one sentence hits because subconsciously it ties everything together, every bit of love and adoration he's shown her, every way he's brought out her light through the entire movie, every way he's tried to get her to love herself as much as he does.

"I really do love it when your light does that."

I watched Elemental for a second time last Friday night. It was really neat to take in more of the details (background, music, character design, etc.) this time--while also still enjoying the movie. I really wanted to appreciate it on the big screen again and help the box office (even if it was a little). It was just as exciting and touching to watch as the first time.

[I kind of wish this was the title screen in the movie, but alas...]

Now, some further thoughts...

🎨THE ART🎨

I got the art book as soon as it was available, but made myself wait until I watched the movie to open it. I got it a month before the movie released. Legit left the plastic on, haha. The art in it is so mesmerizing. I do wish some of the behind-the-scenes 3D stuff had been added as well, or even a single layout from the movie. (hopefully some bonus features for the DVD!)

As much as I love and admire 2D art (which the art book is full of), I'm not sure if that alone would have displayed the emotions this movie needed and portrayed as deeply. I'm also pretty sure 3D has always been Pixar's thing anyways...Correct me if I'm wrong though!

But reading through the art book and learning about how they handled the process, how long they studied certain things for animating and creating this world was so fascinating. Finding ways for it to connect and work together made my art-loving heart so giddy. I remember coming across a Twitter post where one animator talked about how they managed to animate fire hugging by putting two matches together. Sounds simple, but it's so interesting and with the level of lively detail given to the fire characters, I imagine it was difficult to construct and render.

On the second watch, noticing when Ember lit up when happy was so cool. It wasn't just a smile or happiness of the eyes, but the entire character! I also found the stretch and squish of the characters to be really fun and cute. How the different elements reacted to their world was cool. Wade's hair! It's a wave that constantly moves! There's so much detail hidden in so many little things. The way they reflect onto one another. The glow from her fire. I love the outline to their characters. I think the art book referred to it like a membrane? It's more visually pleasing being kind of sketchy and not just a slab of bold lineart.

There are so many stunning panoramic scenes throughout the movie that showcase the brilliance of the world-building and characters. Such as the rainbow shot in the gif below. I honestly love the underwater scene so much. I found it more romantically alluring than even the Tangled boat scene.

💞THE ROMANCE💞

It's not just a slap-them-together-and-call-them-a-couple kind of romance, in my opinion. They have a plausible meet cute into not really "enemies," but they each have their reasons for the events that mesh them together. They have arguments. Like, realistic arguments...For a "kids movie." (I honestly hate that mindset so much because I prefer animation over live action stuff, but that's an entire essay, so moving on). The arguments aren't petty and stupid or miscommunication. They help each other to grow without being controlling or overbearing. And omigosh, THE CONFESSION! The date montage!

The romcom moments matched the evolution of a typical romcom beat sheet. (I'm writing a few myself so I've referred to it often). They have individuality as much as being a unified couple. Their relationship progresses fluidly along with the story. Low key kinda sad the gif below was just promotional, haha. She's like a gremlin teasing him 🤣

🎶THE MUSIC🎶

Gosh, the music. I get so excited with how well it matches the movie overall, and how well it crencendoes and grows quieter at just the perfect moments. There are so many scenes where it's just chef's kiss, but I don't want to spoil them, so...yeah. It's so whimsical. The Firish music is imagative and charming. Some of the musical bits reminded me of Spyro the Dragon, which is my favorite game series.

Thank you Thomas Newman for bringing Elemental alive with such a gorgeous score. And to Lauv--"Steal the Show" is such a bop.

✍️THE WRITING✍️

One critique I've seen a lot from people is how the story is unoriginal. To be honest, tropes exist for a reason. It's not the tropes that's the problem, it's how they're executed. And Elemental does it splendidly. Me personally being a hopeless romantic, I of course adore the romantic aspect of the film, but the relationship between Ember and her father is so vital to the story. It's practically why the story even kind of exists. Especially after watching it the second time and catching how many beat sheet moments align with her and her dad. When Ember said THAT near the end, I was crying even more, because...relatable.

As for the immigration part of the story, I can't speak much on it since I haven't had to experience that. It doesn't feel like my place to talk about, but from what I've read from others who can relate to that, they've mentioned it being well done. I hope this message of the story can find more audience, because as much as I enjoyed the trailers (that teaser was perfection--no plot spoilers, simple, cute, awesome introduction to the setting and characters), the official trailer and TV spots did not do justice to the heart of the story, in my opinion. I really kind of despise how much they advertised the "toot toot" joke when it could've involved more about the central theme of the movie. Like I said, Ember's relationship with her dad is so important.

Whoever marketed it as "Romeo & Juliet," I have a question...Why??? That play is a TRAGEDY. Just because "they can't be together" should not have meant they passed the advertising as a story similar to Romeo and Juliet. Wade and Ember are also more clever, lol. People are saying they haven't seen Elemental marketed, while others say it's been everywhere (signs, billboards, etc.). BUT, either way it was marketed poorly. The official trailer really should've delved more into the family and father/daughter dynamic more. For releasing Father's Day weekend, why was that not a decision during marketing???

By the way, it's not just Zootopia but with elements like I've seen people saying. This is an actual romcom, meaning the romance is actually crucial in it. I ship Nick and Judy, but it's not confirmed--let's wait for Zootopia 2 though, which announced back in January. Both films handle discrimination (and I love Zootopia), but where Zootopia has an actual villain, the "villain" of Elemental is the pressure Ember feels being an immigrant daughter and the opposites attract. External forces vs internal. Just because it's a modern city in both films, it really seemed like it had to be that way for Elemental. Like how the elements live among their world. The intro scene when the parents first arrive paint such a good image of the setting immediately.

I also feel like Wade and Ember are older characters. At least 20s, considering the passage of time mentioned and worrying about careers. Which is cool to me as an older audience member. I really want Elemental to survive and possibly maybe continue the story in some way, but after reading an article stating that a writer said there was going to be a baby at the end...Like, please don't. Let them live first, lol. As a couple. As Ember getting new experiences. Let her have her internship. What's Wade doing after they move? If they did a kid route, please do it as an epilogue or later short like Carl's Date. I just hate how society/movies/books are like "the couple has to have kids to prove their love" kind of thing. Bro, I think Wade has proved his love...

Anyways...

The casting was also terrific! Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie really did an awesome job bringing Ember and Wade to life. The emotion in so many scenes hits hard. Side characters were done really well too. I know some people wanted air and earth to be shown more, but maybe they could be more in the future? In the art book, the reason water founded Element City was because it was assumed the most opposite to fire.

I've read that people will just wait until it's on Disney+ because of fast releases anyways. Cheaper too, I guess. But Elemental really deserves to be enjoyed at the theaters with good sound quality and epic graphics. As much as I can't wait to own this movie to re-watch at home whenever I want, I'd gladly wait an extra few months to let Elemental shine in theaters to try to make it's money back and more.

Again, I'm begging people to give Elemental a try. It touches on so much more than romance, even though it did an amazing job as an official animated romcom. Family is a subject that is just as important to the core of the film. It's fun, funny, and artistically and musically awesome.

A planet with four sophont races and a sharp technological gradient.

The water peoples expanded along one landmass’s coastline and gulfs, and became the first to weave and construct permanent settlements.

The earth peoples had learned to genetically engineer the plant life growing around them, designing species for tasks like intercommunications, medicine, construction, and travel.

The air peoples spearheaded aviation technology for the planet, and had been on the precipice of an industrial age upon contact.

The fire peoples were the last to be contacted on their isolated continent. Some ancient Firish art depicts the aircraft of the more advanced other civilizations. They rely on two symbiotic species to move, emote, and manipulate with.

Due to the evolutionary gaps between the races, natural languages are usually incompatible. Tactile and sign are the most popular shapes for intermediaries to take.

While signs and touches have been quickly modified to include a simplified form for the fire peoples’ single arm to express, the full expressive potential of Firish emotion does not have an outlet in common language, and full physical accommodation for their symbioses in public spaces is unheard of.
