idk if this will make sense but like. the way birb feathers work for mobians IN MY LORE AT LEAST is that like, they have individual feathers and fluff layers like a regular bird. BUT. the reason they have shapes or some have limited strands or pieces (take wave for instance) that do not seem feathery or textured at all… is NOT because it is one big feather or plume or anything.

instead, feathers are often loose and fluffy, but styled into these loc-like shapes for convenience and also personal flare. it takes a lot of maintenance and upkeep for them to stay so uniform and unruffled, especially if you have less of them, but it’s still less maintenance than having to deal with daily styling

ultimately, out of the rogues, jet has the least managed (but still heavily managed) feathers because he loves the mohawk or ponytail look— it’s out of his face and even if they get ruffled by the wind, they’re behind him.

storm has 3, and is the most confident in his styling ability because there’s no mohawk, hairtie, or bandana to cover him when he’s not feeling up to it. king shit

wave’s feathers,,, are a good representation of her personality. having feathers styled THAT LONG is basically unheard of. like she has never molted that shit off she is COMMITTED and they aren’t extensions either. don’t ask me how they feathers grow longer like hair i haven’t decided which reasoning i want to go with yet. anyways, wave’s feathers require THE MOST effort, but the reason why storm still surpassed her is because. of the bandana. wave isn’t styling those fucking baby feathers, so on a good day her head is smooth, but most days it is the bird equivalent of hat hair and a scrunkly mess of choppy fringe. and i love her
