Test doodle for the @fpacatuto blog using the FA store brushes.
Firealpaca 2.11.5 added a timelapse function so I am just trying it out. it's quite interesting seeing it play back like that and it's easy to set with FA 🤓

I’ve been trying to get new brushes on Firealpaca (free cuz im broke), but idk where to find them. Does anyone have any places I can get some? Specifically one for rough sketches. Tysm!!
Our friend in FireAlpaca @fpacatuto has an exceptional brush tag!
DeviantArt is also a great place to find brushes- users Mo-fox & Nuubles have pretty good collections of custom brushes they’ve made.
And of course, you can also try your hand at making one yourself!

Ayyyy, I really love how you color your art pieces, may I ask what brush you use? (and what program) :D Have a wonderful day, and I hope it isnt as hot over there as it is here, hope you dont melt :D
Hey! So I’m a cheapskate and I use firealpaca. It’s a really good little bit of free-ware that updates regularly and has a surprising amount of features, plus it’s really straightforward to use. I highly recommend it.
My go-to brushes are…
Sketching - pencil
Linework - pen and marker brush
Colour - dry brush effect at every and any size
A lot of brushes come with the program (and more get added with most updates it seems), but it’s super easy to make your own. You just need a PNG file to import and you’re basically good to go. There are some setting you can play around with to make it exactly how you want, which is easy enough.
I recommend @fpacatuto for tutorials on making brushes, textures, and general help with using firealpaca - nice and straight forwards, and is one of the first sites to turn up in Google. Also, deviantart is a great place for pre-made brushes. A lot of my pattern brushes come from there.
Hope that makes sense!
(Luckily I moved to Australia and it’s winter here, so it’s not too bad at all, but it’s really hot back home in the UK)

hi how do you color the rose brush from firealpaca? I looked forever and i couldnt find or figure out how. I when i click apply background color it just turns transparent. I just want pretty roses :< Thank you v much for your help!
Hi, apologies for the week-long lateness! I was sick but was also trying to figure out which rose brush you meant.
Regardless of what brush you use, if it is a bitmap brush (uses a png or JPG image or a .MDP firelpaca file as a base), there should be this option for changing the color here in the brush settings:
"Apply Foreground color"
Tumblr media
When you switch this on and OK the brush settings, then you should be able. Results vary based on the contents of the brush (whether it only uses lineart, has shading, how fark/saturated the original colors are etc). I used the carnation brush from brush store as an example, but you should be able to get similar results with your rose brush.
Tumblr media
You can see that the "Apply FG color" version on the left in blue, has made the entire brush slightly more transparent, losing some of the detail of the original. If your rose brush is similarly more detailed, and you would like to keep this detail, what you can do, is open the brush from the brush folder (Help>open confiq folder and go to folder named "brush_bitmap") so you change the image colors via Filter>Hue, save as a new file and then make that a brush. But if you do not havethis sort of detail (as pictured above) or simply do not need it, you can try the first option of going into brush settings and finding "Apply FG color"
Hope yhis is helpful!
edit(16.05); this reply under the post is helpful too! you can always paint those roses and then use the filter menu options to change the hue.

Hi, I'm trying to make a roller brush but it keeps showing gaps in my lines when I try to use it. Is there any way to stop this? I'm using version 2.4.3 of Firealpaca
hi! my tumblr just deleted my reply to you so I'm gonna make it extra short.
Make sure your original bitmap file "connects" at the ends. if you look at the chain brush from the firealpaca brush store, you can see that the left and right ends connect. If they don't thats where you get the gaps. AFAIK, roller brushes do not have the "brush spacing" option many other brush types do in FA. to see other roller brushes up close (Firealpaca should come with some by default) go to the confiq folder and open the "brush bitmap" folder, that has all your bitmap brushes (Help> Open confiq folder - open brush_bitmap)
also, the latest version is 2.8.4, so you should update to that to make sure everything is working correctly, if that might be the issue. You can check the changelog to see if there have been any recent changes to the roller brush. firealpaca.com/download

this probably sounds like a silly problem, but when I select a certain spot from one canvas and then paste it onto another canvas, it ends up being placed at the upper left corner for some reason. I don't remember this being a problem before, I think, but is there a possible way to have it so it'll be pasted in the same area where it was originally on the first? (assuming both canvases are the same size)
Hello! I can assure you that it is not a silly problem. I'm curious what "certain spot" you meant, so if you want, you can specify that. What usually happens when anything is copied from one canvas and pasted to another, is that the piece is placed in the upper left corner by default.
I don't rememvber there being a way to place things in the same spot, but here's a small workaround:
select the area you want to paste in the other work. then copy and paste immediately in the same file, so it becomes its own layer. now reselect ALL of the canvas - now assuming the old and new file are the same canvas size, you can paste that second copy into the new file with the correct placement.
sorry for getting to you 4 days late, I was away this week for work reasons.

Hello There I hope you are well, I am having some trouble trying to export a gif from firealpaca, I made it and wanted to show my friends, but when I export as gif it just doesnt load at all and crashed my friends discord! when i try looking at it on my computer it just appears blank, Ive tried everything, updating it and my computer but it still wont work! Please if you have any advice or help any would be wonderfull, Have a Nice day! -G
Hi! I cannot tell just from this ask what the problem could be, but it's possibly a memory issue. How big is your canvas and how big is your file? How many colors did you use in your GIF and how many frames? If you check the limits for a discord GIF file (google search it), you'll see that it will automatically make the file smaller, but the limit itself seems to be 8MB for all files. You can try uploading it to an image-hosting website such as imgur or others where the limits are not that big and see if the GIF works there. if it's working on your PC and it's working on an image-hosting site, the problem may be Discord itself.
Here's a website that explains some methods to get around that: https://www.alphr.com/get-around-discord-file-size-limit/
Here's a video tutorial on how to use the animation feature by RhiZero on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p0nl2he7hc&ab_channel=RhiZero%F0%9F%8E%A8
And a text tutorial on the same: https://imagy.app/how-to-animate-in-firealpaca/
What you can also try is to use the animation template that FA gives you from File>New and then reformat your animation/moving image to fit that template, or fit the template to your image.
If you tried making it properly and it doesn't work still, you may have encountered a bug and can file a report on the main Firealpaca site: https://firealpaca.com/
Make sure to follow their info guide on the bug submitting page and I believe you can also include links in your comment with screenshots (uploaded to imgur for example).
Sorry I can't help with this much but maybe one of these things will work out for you! it's also a possibility that the GIF export function just isn't that streamlined yet in Firealpaca. I have exported some bigger files myself and have noticed the loss of quality i.e when there is a very large amount of different colors or large amount of frames. This is actually fairly normal for general GIF files because the format itself only supports "up to 8 bits per pixel for each image, allowing a single image to reference its own palette of up to 256": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF (wikipedia)
This means there's a certain limit to GIFs on their own regardless of where you post them or what PC and program you use to view them. Limits of GIF: https://support.hopin.com/hc/en-us/articles/360056528971-Image-Size-and-GIF-File-Dimensions

Hi! Thanks for your page, it's hard finding resources for Firealpaca online.
Do you know how to make roller brushes? I'm trying to make my own roller brushes to help speed up my drawing workflow, but I just can't understand how they work.
Hello! Roller brushes don't really have an official tutorial as far as I know, but I've only been looking through google search, and following the official accounts, so maybe there is something out there. So I'll do a little explainer on roller brushes, based on my own experience.
Basically, when you look at official roller brushes, you'll notice the image can be quite long. The image used can be distorted by the roller brush engine, even if the image itself is straight. The brushes also always go from left to right, horizontal, so the brush can "roll" properly:
Tumblr media
If you want your stroke to be continuous and always connected, you should make sure that the left and right edges connect. These vine brushes for example, because they're connected at the edges, these stalks look like the can be never-ending.
Tumblr media
However, when using roller brushes, if you do more loopy, shorter or quicker lines, instead of continuous and long ones, you can start to notice that the brush cuts off a bit in some sections (bottom right corner of this green example image)
Tumblr media
When making something more natural looking, it can also often start to look a bit obvious where the canvas cut-off of the brush is, so my tip based on my own an official brushes, is to make the cutoff very exact, but also ideally, avoid realistic brushes (with a preference more to "template" style brushes like the vine stalk examples here), or to make the cutoff intentional (like I've done with these "ink roller" brushes here), so it doesn't look too strange when the brush is not used for smoother/straighter lines. Hope those tips help a bit!
Tumblr media
also, so sorry for getting to your ask so late! tumblr has not been showing me notifications anymore (unless it's bots) and yours seems to have gotten lost in all that.

New update! This one people have been waiting for a long time.
FireAlpaca Ver 2.11.5 (2023/08/10)
Added time-lapse recording feature (start and end from file menu or alpaca button).
At the end of time-lapse recording, you can convert to animated GIF.
When opening an APNG file, you can now select "Convert to animated GIF" or "Import as canvas".
Very exciting update, and one I myself could not have foreseen for this 2023 summer. Try it out! Observations from my own test:
you can set the speed at the end of a recording (press firealpaca button for "end recording") 5, 10, 15, 30 and 60 seconds are available
Ending the recording pop-up window will display also the number of frames in the drawing.
you can draw and then save a GIF/APNG only once
you can start at the beginning of your drawing and it will even record animation frames correctly (one frame layer at a time)
Official timelapse tutorial (in images) from FA official EN on twitter:
