Firealpaca update from this september week!

FireAlpaca Ver 2.11.9(2023/09/20)

When using a material brush, you can now draw with anti-aliasing completely turned off.

Implemented brush snap to grid.

Added L version and 2L version (Japanese photo size) to newly created templates.

It is now possible to display a "dark checkered pattern" when using a transparent background (View menu).

Added mm to grid settings.

B5 has been added to the manga manuscript template.

Added gradient preset (can be initialized with "Initialize Settings -> Restore Gradients…" from the Help menu).

some of these updates feel hugely helpful, especially the mm settings being added and the new templates. the global antialiasing (first point) will be so helpful for many who have asked for this before!

This is the Buddy for November 18th. It's got shades of October 22nd's Buddy, right?

It doesn't really represent anything related to the real world, as much as me wanting to try out the technique I used that day of drawing the smoke, then selecting some segments of the drawing and sending them to a layer under the rest of the drawing. The results are what you see.

It kind of makes me wonder about all those weird, abstract, and sometimes pretentious "meaningful" pieces of art we see online, and the implication that they're not really supposed to represent anything, either literally or symbolically, but were rather drawn because the artist wanted to experiment with a technique or something.

Of course there are always people who say there's always a bit of emotion that bleeds into a person's art, no matter how much of an amateur the person is. That reminds me of a Scott McCloud line where there's no such thing as pure art that's created without an economic goal (even the mad artists living in a cellar are still hoping someone sees enough value in their work to let them keep living there), nor is there something that's pure business without any artsy undercurrent to it (even a suck-up raising a glass to toast their boss is kind of making a bit of a flourish in the motion.)

I don't know if I agree (McCloud hasn't solved enough word problems, I know there's no art there) but it's interesting to think about.

what javier did between the events of rdr2 and rdr1 has always been in my mind. I just think he was an absolute mess. he wasn't coping with the fact that he not only lost the family he tried so desperately to hold onto, he also realized that he fucked up horrendously, and there's no going back to fix it and the guilt and regret eats at him like nothing else.

he really just. stops taking care of himself, I don't think he cuts his hair short yet but he lets it grow and doesn't care for it like he used to. he doesn't sleep, he never bathes, he drinks and cries when he's alone, he just wanders between cantinas in nuevo paraiso, hoping he stays under the radar of the government.

i like to think something happens that makes him snap out of it, whatever it might be. when he does, his hair is so matted he just ends up cutting it all off with his knife

like those 12 years are something I want to elaborate on bc it's still wild to me that rdr2 javier and rdr1 javier are the same person

Hey been following your blog for a while and I remember a long time ago you posted all the brushes you used in fire alpaca do you still use it or have you upgraded since then I know I still use medi bang

I still use the same brushes! I'm ancient now (/j) so I like that I don't have to do anything special when FireAlpaca updates and I can just draw immediately

most of them are default settings; I also tend to do "paint/erase" (press-and-holding Z to use the brush as an eraser and 'chip away' at details then releasing Z to paint as usual) when I'm painting with the Pencil tool if I want sharp edges!

anyways, is there any way to replicate the mspaint "pattern" brushes into firealpaca?

It would make it a lot easier than switching between programs haha.

Hello! Sorry for the 2-day late reply! there are a few solutions in Firealpaca for this.

First, the most accurate way to recreate this would probably be the pattern brush option that FA has - you can make a pattern out of a 512x512 canvas png with this texture and then a brush that looks exactly like a pixel brush. But if you want just this tone/texture, you can also use any bitmap brush. Add that pattern into the "brush textures folder" - it's simple but you will have to follow a specific way to do it. Just take that 512x512 canvas again, make it a .MDP (Firealpaca native file) and give it a name that is different from these ones:

you can even go into Confiq folder and open one of these, then replace the image and text with your own, then save as a new file with a unique name in the same place.

-it's important that you have at least one language there in the layer name (see example below)

- 1 layer is the image file and you can have empty layers as translated names if you switch languages (JP, KR, CH, EN are only available ones for the program and that's probably why the file layers are organized like this) but you can also leave just one layer and one language, like in this brush store file:

Once you've prepared this file and saved as a new MDP with a different name, close Firealpaca, open any normal/custom bitmap brush and add the texture there in brush options. it should remain as a pattern that doesn't change sizes. it should work for any brush type that has the texture option available in its options. if it's grayed out, switch to a bitmap/bitmap watercolor brush again, as this option doesn't work for the special brush types like Scatter Mix, Pattern and Roller.

You can replicate the "pixel brush" look by using the 1-bit layer to draw. in one bit basically - it'll pixellate any non-watercolor bitmap or normal brush and it's texture preset as well, but it probably won't retain the pattern. So I think if you don't want to replicate this, you can just continue using any bitmap brush that already looks like a pixel brush.

I do not know what option you would like specifically, but basically, if you want an exact copy, you'd have to try and make the file yourself, if you're fine with just the pattern, you can prepare that file and add it into the brush textures folder.
