Exploring Intentionality With Tamino

For this Belgian-born musician, every word counts.

Tamino’s first New York show is sold out, and the crowd is enraptured. Throughout the performance, the audience seeks to establish a connection with the towering 22-year-old dressed in black. At every bout of silence, they ask questions, they request songs. “Play ‘Crocodile’!” one fan screams, and though he’s about to start another piece, Tamino switches chords and bends to our will. “I didn’t know that worked,” a surprised fan replies.

When he’s not touring with Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, playing with the Nagham Zirkayat Orchestra or being personally requested to perform with Lana Del Rey, it’s just Tamino-Amir Moharam Fouad and his instruments.

When asked which guitar is his favorite, he answers like a proud father, “I can’t pick,” as he slings a black electric over his shoulder and secretly whispers “this one,” before heading into another song. Skipping octaves, his voice is like velvet, passing through Arabic vocal and tonal inflections.

Music is in the blood for the Belgian-born artist; with a name inspired by the prince of Mozart’s “The Magic Flute,” and a revered Egyptian grandfather nicknamed “The Sound of the Nile,” Tamino was born into music.

Before his show at National Sawdust and as he gears up to release the deluxe version of his debut album Amir [out October 18th via Arts & Crafts], we met Tamino at his hotel in Brooklyn. Just a day before the passing of Daniel Johnston, we spoke about the importance of authenticity in songwriting. We explored Tamino’s lyrical journey and the meaning behind his newest singles. It’s striking how thoughtful and specific he is with his words – in both his work and his spoken language.

So you have your show in New York tomorrow, you’ll be touring in the US and Canada, then you go into the Middle East, North Africa, and then the EU — you were also on tour at the beginning of the year as well. How are you faring with being on the road so much?

I’m very lucky because I have an amazing crew: my sound guy, my tour manager, if we’re with the band, we have a slightly bigger crew, we have two musicians and a backliner, and light guy [sic]. They’re all good guys; without them, I wouldn’t be able to bear it, I think.

I like being home; I like to be alone, and I like to write and work on music. So being away from that is sometimes hard. The good thing, and also, the kind of weird thing about playing shows is that you’re kind of dedicating your life to that: being on the road. You travel the whole day and then in the evening, you have your show. It all comes down to that. You have to make it work because otherwise it’s been for nothing, you know? You kind of push all of your energy into that, and you receive a lot of energy back from the crowd, which is what keeps you going, I guess; that interaction, the energy.

How do you recalibrate before getting on stage? How do you get in the correct mindset?

I do like to warm up my voice. I think that’s something that’s important. It’s good to get into the right mindset, and also to just get my body ready. Apart from that, I think am [sic] somebody who does well with routine, but right now I don’t really have one. When we tour, it’s not like we have the same production each evening. It’s like, “Oh, now we’re playing for 200 people...Oh, now we’re playing for thousands of people.” It’s always different from each other. Also backstage, it’s always different, so it’s difficult to maintain a routine. But I think maybe in the future, meditation would be nice, or just something to get me in the moment.

I must say I’m doing better and better on stage, in terms of being there, and not being stuck in thought. I did have trouble with that in the beginning; sometimes I was just thinking about stuff.

Like what?

Stupid stuff like tasks I had to do; nothing that has anything to do with the show. Hesitations like, “I wonder if the crowd is liking this or..” just stuff you shouldn’t be thinking about while you’re performing.

Lately, when I’m on the stage, I really feel like it’s not that much of a problem anymore. I can just let go. Those are the most beautiful moments, when you are really led by your own music; you just feel that the crowd is reacting to that, and I really like that; it’s something I’m always after. It’s kind of a transcendence feeling. If it works, it’s better than meditation, for me. My whole evening is different after that.

It makes sense, you’re fully in the present.

One of the main aspects of music is connecting with other people. Is there a specific crowd that really resonated with you? Or a specific fan, or show? I’m sure that they’re all great, but if there’s, one that comes to mind…

They’re all great, yeah, that’s the diplomatic answer. It depends, probably some cultures are more keen to show emotion.

What differences have you noticed between the crowds?

In Italy, they are very enthusiastic, but they are very respectful at the same time. It’s very special, they will be quiet for the whole song, and then they will want to shout, and they will throw roses at you, or whatever. It’s very romantic, the French are like that as well. In America, I feel actually very welcomed. It’s very inviting here, I don’t know how else to put it. I have the feeling, maybe I’m wrong about that, but as a European, it is like the new world, you know? And so many people move here. Of course, it was all a very long time ago, but people are still moving here. There are so many cultures coming together, and that’s why the crowd is very receiving. They’re open for other cultures; let’s say, it’s not an island.

I haven’t had many bad experiences, to be honest. I think I’ve been very lucky so far. Maybe it’s because I’ve never had a worldwide hit song or something like that. I think that’s the moment where you get crowds that are only there for that one song. And so far, I think I’ve always had crowds who have really invested in music. They’re there with a purpose, they want to experience something. Until I have this hit song, I don’t know if I’ll ever have one...I don’t know if I ever want one, to be honest, because of that reason...but until that time comes, I think I will always have good experiences.

What’s the first thing that you want to do when you’re done touring in December?

I’m moving to a new house. I feel like I just want to decorate the place. It’s the first time I will be really designing what it looks like. It’s in this very multicultural area, a lot of Arabic families live there, but lately, a lot of other Belgian families have been moving there. It’s kind of becoming this nice clash of cultures, and I like that. It feels like it’s a vibrant place.

Antwerp is very, very small. You can cross one corner, and then you are in a totally different area. It’s this very small area of a lot of cultures coming together and I really like that. I would say some parts are too gentrified, which wouldn’t have been a good place to go and live for me. It doesn’t really inspire, it’s not a vibrant place. It kind of feels boring.

In Belgium, lately, because it’s such a small country, it’s not difficult to become known, so they recognize me, or whatever. It’s not like they bother me, but I prefer to…

Just go about your day.

Yeah.

What are your inspirations for your new place? What do you like?

So many things, I know this designer he’s called Jan Jan Van Essche. He is really, really cool Of course his clothes, I love; I wear a lot of what he does. But the way he decorated his shop, and his office where he works and where he draws, it’s so beautiful. It’s a mix of, say a lot of different ethnical inspirations coming together with kind of a roughness, a bit more industrial. But very humble. It’s a very humble appearance. It’s not too over the top.

You have two new songs, “Crocodile” and “Every Pore,” but only the former is out at the moment...do you want to talk about them?

The second one’s out next month. They’re both quite old songs. So when I chose to record for my album, I had a lot of songs, and I chose these possible candidates for the record. Those two made it to the last 15-16 songs I would say. But then, in the end, they fell out. When I listened to them again, and sometimes I played them live, I always had a good reaction on the songs.

I really like them, I just think they’re true B-Sides; they are kind of odd songs in comparison to the other ones. I really felt like I wanted to release them anyway, so with the deluxe version, I felt that was a really good opportunity. With the song we just released, “Crocodile,” for me it was very weird listening back to the song. I wrote it so many years ago, and it kind of perfectly talks about the situation I’m in right now, not literally. You have this crocodile, and he looks at the songbird and offers the metaphor. Crocodile could be the person that has yet to be awakened, and the songbird is what he could be.

I guess any artist goes through that; you see a version of yourself, you want to strive forward, but you also know everything that comes with that because of history, because of stories you’ve heard so many times. And you know that there is a truth in those stories because they happen over, and over, and over, and it can happen to you as well.

I read in another interview that you said “Someone can play three chords or maybe even one chord and move me. It’s because of the person that plays it, and how they play it.” When’s the last time that happened to you?

Let me check my Spotify because I always forget whatever I’ve been listening to lately.

Okay, my daily mixes are the singer- songwriters from America, the new ones, the ones who are still alive. Then, the ones who are a bit older, or dead. And then Arabic music. The more Alternative stuff, some Hip-Hop, all kinds of stuff.

Do you know The Disintegration Loops by William Basinski? It’s crazy. So he has tapes of existing music, and he manipulates them. But this one was broken, and it just kept on looping, and every time it looped, it got more broken. During this session, 9/11 happened. So he was looking, out and the album cover is a photo from where he was working.

It’s the same thing over and over, but it moves me like crazy. Do you know Daniel Johnston? I think what’s so cool is that he’s not a virtuoso, but he moves me more than 99% of all virtuosos.

He’s authentic.

Yeah, he’s authentic...how do you say it? We say, he has (literally translated) “saying power,” power in what he says... His songs are beautiful, the lyrics are heartbreaking…

What are you reading right now?

I just started A Brave New World which is cool. I think he was really young when he wrote it, it’s just insane to realize he wrote it then. It’s so accurate. If there were people who wanted to create this Utopian society where everything is perfect, it would be like that. I haven’t read 1984 though which is similar I think.

Your writing is very rooted in emotion. I’m assuming it could be cathartic to perform, but I’m wondering if there’s ever been a moment where it felt like too much.

I’m not sure. I don’t think so, actually. Maybe like once or twice, it’s usually when you just finished writing a song, and you perform it for the first time, that’s usually a very special moment. I don’t really feel like it’s ever too much though, that I can’t play it.

I feel like there is also a certain sense of letting go once you’ve performed it. Once you’re ready to release it to the world, you’ve almost come to terms with whatever you were writing about.

Absolutely, that’s true. You realize it’s not yours anymore. Have you listened to Mount Eerie’s record, A Crow Looked at Me? He had a child with his wife, and then his wife died. It’s really, really terrible. That record is really beautiful. I’ve never seen a concert of his, but he did this concert in the Netherlands once in a church, and that was so emotional for everyone there, apparently. If I listen to that record, I’m always wondering, “Whoa, how does he do it?”

You’ve previously discussed the idea of letting go of performing the exact recording of your work, and moving more towards letting the music evolve through playing it. Has there ever been a time when you’ve wanted to change a lyric or something?

Of course, I mean, it’s actually funny because in the foreword of Brave New World, Aldous Huxley is talking about looking back at old work, and you, of course, want to change stuff, but that it’s also beautiful in a way, that you cannot.

And it’s this moment in time, where you were that person back then, and you were that kind of artist back then. I think some of the lyrics on my first record are very naive and very bold, in a way. Naive is kind of the more negative way of looking at it, and bold is the more positive way of looking at them.

Probably, I’m less naive in my songwriting right now, but I’m also less bold. That’s something that I feel right now, the older you get, the more you think; you have more in your archive, you overthink. But, I have no trouble performing those older songs. Even if I’m not very proud of certain lyrics, I still feel totally behind them. I’m still comfortable representing those songs. I stand behind them.

Because your words are so intentional, when you’re actually writing them, is there a revision process or do you just kind of get tapped into something and write?

I hope to just write, and then stuff happens. The lyrics, I go over and over it, until they are just right. So far I’ve written more out of music. So the music came first, and then the lyrics. I’ve done it the other way around as well, but I feel like those initial melodies and structures, they’re always the best when they just come out of this flow.

It’s like a gift, you just have to be open to receive it. I went to see Nick Cave, and he said such a beautiful thing. He said there’s no such thing as writer’s block; too many people think that there’s something inside of them that they need to get out, but it’s actually something that’s out there that needs to go through them.

If you are open for that, so if you try each day, then eventually those things will flow through you. Or maybe you’re in a certain moment in your life, where it’s not really going through you.

Last question – if music did not exist what would you do?

I wouldn’t know. I did acting and theatre when I was a kid. I really liked that, it was my first passion. I like writing as well. As long as I have a creative outlet, then it’s fine.

fly on the wall * fem!driver

she crashes in her third race of her f1 career, but she's more concerned about its repercussions than the concussion

pairings: sebastian vettel x fem!driver, lewis hamilton x fem!reader

notes: ooooh my god i had to rewrite this 5 times because it wasn't up to my liking initially, and then tumblr was having some issues saving my shit so i lost it?? it's very sad fr

"are you alright?" sebastian's voice comes onto the radio.

his eyes are trained on the big screen, cameras focused on the car parked into the wall out of a turn. he couldn't get an answer out of his driver so he had to resort to the third party.

if his assumptions are correct, she would have hit her head on her seat hard at impact. but things like that can lead to so many bigger things that he might not even be prepared for.

her vision slowly returns, blacking out for a mere second as the car went into the barriers of the baku track.

she had issues with her brakes for a few laps. sebastian had suggested retiring the car if she didn't feel safe, but she pressed on. the issue didn't seem so serious and it seemed manageable.

at first.

it's a driver error - missing the early braking point to accommodate her already tweaking brakes. she missed it by a millisecond, clipped the wall and got sent straight into the wall.

she sighs, pressing the button on her steering wheel. "i'm okay," she answers shakily, tears now filling her eyes.

"okay, that's the important part. don't think about anything else. i'll see you in the medical centre." sebastian is quick to shut her thoughts down, clearly prioritising her wellbeing and not the car.

"i'm sorry," she sighs, voice shaking and lips quivering. “i’m so sorry, seb.”

this is only her third race in f1, how could she have already crashed out? on a race where she was so close to that podium. it would have been such a monumental moment — a woman on the podium.

with 20 laps left in the race and her in 5th place, it wasn’t all that far out of reach at the time. yet, here she is causing a yellow flag as she starts to notice the smoke surrounding her.

"like i said. don't think about anything else."

she sighs to herself as a marshal appears above her halo, greeting her with a soft smile. she nods, letting herself get helped out of her car.

but only one thought eats away at her: she crashed on her third race. what's everyone going to say about her now?

“let me talk,” sebastian sighs, hands up in the air as he tries to calm the girl sitting on the examination bed. he’s barely able to get a word in.

she’s slouched against the wall, purple balaclava in her hands as she traces the thread that holds it together at the hem. the minute he walked in, she looked up immediately with tears in her eyes and a string of apologies.

it hasn’t stopped since he poked his head through the door, cutting him off before he could even ask if she’s okay.

“do you not see the problem?” she shrieks, eyebrows furrowing at sebastian. “i just crashed out! imagine what the media has to say about my performance today? they’re just going to use this as a reason to justify that i shouldn’t be on the track!”

sebastian drops his hands to his side, deciding that he’d just let her get it all off her chest. it might make her feel better.

though, it doesn’t make him feel good that she’s continually talking down on herself. he vouched for her for weeks for a reason, and it’s because he believes in her. more than she does in herself, it seems.

“i didn’t work my ass off my whole life just to be undermined because i’m a woman!” she tosses the balaclava aside, now picking at the loose skin by her fingernails. “i didn’t get this far for everyone to count me out because of one crash! can you fucking believe that shit? it’s a fucking rookie mistake, seb! i’ve been racing for years!”

she drops her hands by her side and groans again, rolling her eyes. “i’ve earned my rightful spot to be where i am! they are not going to care about that!”

sebastian shrugs slightly, overlooked by the infuriated woman across him. he can barely get a breath in before she continues, shutting his mouth immediately as she continues her rampage.

“imagine the headlines tomorrow! a driver is as good as their last race — i know that! don’t try to sugarcoat it. you know i’m right!” she rambles on, eyes darting all over the room. she’s pushed herself off the wall slightly, clearly flustered over the course of events.

she avoids sebastian’s eyes, the fear of fully breaking down in front of him prominent. crying over a crash seemed like such a silly thing to do, but there’s no denying how demanding the sport truly is.

in her short three races in the season and people’s neverending criticism of her abilities, it makes her lie awake at night rethinking her position on the grid.

following her crash, sebastian hadn’t expected for her to ramble on for this long. he initially thought that the crash would have sent her into a shocking silence, so while her anger is warranted, it was definitely not on his list of things to be ready for.

“imagine what they have to say about me!” she throws her hands in the air, scratching her head gently. “imagine what they’ll say about you! it’s not going to be good, trust me! i’m a woman in a fucking racing car in a male-dominated sport!”

“hey!” sebastian’s voice bounces in the room, making her lift her head with her eyes narrowed into a glare.

the sudden movement reminds her of her restrictions, hands coming up to nurse the back of her neck. she feels a sharp pain shoot through her head all the way down to her shoulders. “what?” she hisses, quickly looking down to hide the pain.

“you literally just crashed head-first into a wall at 250 kilometres per hour! you’re lucky all you got was a concussion and whiplash! it could’ve been worse!”

“if i was lucky, i’d have been able to recover and get on the podium as we discussed! i was already 5th!”

“and you didn’t! that’s okay! you learn from things like these!”

“no, it’s not! i’m already hated as it is!”

“it’s part of the sport! fernando alonso has crashed, lewis has, and so have max and charles! every other big name in formula 1 has had their fair share! you’ll be okay!”

she finally meets sebastian’s eyes, slouching even more as she audibly sighs. he watches her body deflate, leaning back dejectedly. “it’s still different.”

she’s still in her fireproofs. her race suit had to be taken off during her short time with the doctor, hanging on the back of the plastic chair in the small medical room. her helmet sits next to her, underneath the balaclava she’d thrown on top of it.

her hair is in a loose ponytail with stray hairs poking out and resting on her face. the adrenaline has yet to leave her body, chest heaving as if it’d just been over and beads of sweat still scattered all over her.

“i know it’s different. but everyone else who says whatever isn’t the person behind the wheel, you have to remember that,” he says in a soothing tone, finally coming up to stand next to her. he sighs, putting a hand on top of her head. “and i know it sucks.”

she shakes her head. “no, you don’t. we’re different; our problems are different.”

“the way they used to hate me, and things they say about you are different, yes,” sebastian nods in a low voice, his thumb now tracing circles on her head. “but you still can prove them wrong. you just started driving in formula 1 — you’ll have way more chances to shut them all up.”

“i could’ve already. if i just controlled the car a little better.”

“it’s okay.” he slides himself onto the examination bed, sitting next to her. he intertwines his fingers and rests his hands on his thigh. “everybody crashes at one point in their career.

“let the media say what they want, but not all that criticise you have been in a race before. nobody on that grid thinks you’re lesser than you are just because of what happened today.”

“you don’t know that.”

sebastian just shakes his head, refusing to elaborate any further. he leans back into the wall as well. “oscar is on the way with some snacks for you.”

crashing out during a race is never easy. years before he decided to retire, tapping and crashing out of a race has always been demoralising. it always feels like the first time when he does.

“i don’t need snacks. i need to go back to 4 hours ago when i was still on track for a podium finish in the first half of my rookie season.”

“with your talent, i can assure you that this will not be your only opportunity in formula 1. i will make sure of it, of course. wherever i go, you go.”

the door creaks open, cutting her off before she can throw an answer back as sebastian. “i’ve got your favourite snacks. i also stole a couple of twix bars from your backpack, i hope you don’t mind.”

“well, why’d you take them and still tell me about it knowing i wouldn’t even have given it to you in the first place?” she reaches for the nearest object next to her, yanking it towards oscar by the door.

“because it was calling my name,” he shrugs, pushing the door fully open to reveal who he’s strung along to the medical centre.

“i took a packet of haribo,” logan shrugs as he steps in. he flinches when she clenches her fist, scrambling to pull something out of his paper bag. “but i got you a can of sprite to make up for it! don’t be mad!”

her gaze softens when she notices lewis hamilton standing behind her friends, a paper bag hanging on his fingers as he grins at her.

“how are you, sweetie?” his voice is empathetic and low, giving her a look that she’d seen from everyone she’s passed on her way here.

she sees lewis and sebastian exchange glances, almost making her roll her eyes again.

she doesn’t talk to lewis that often, but he has addressed her before when she would trail behind sebastian on the track. she would often greet him softly as she hid behind her mentor, or simply excuse herself when she sees either oscar or logan passing by.

he’s a role model and the last thing she ever wanted to do was be too overbearing. to see him come to her aid is only a dream come true.

“i hope you don’t beat yourself up because of that. you drove a brilliant race today,” he smiles. “everybody crashes out. don’t even care what others have to say about you. you did well.”

lewis understands being cast out as a minority. he will never understand the struggles and pressure put on her, but he can at least relate to a certain extent. “don’t even sweat it. you’re now one of the world’s greatest in a fast race car. you’d smoke anybody who would dare challenge you.”

oscar tilts his head. “why would someone random just challenge her out on the street?”

“oscar, shut up,” logan shoves the australian slightly, landing a warning smack on his shoulder after. “let her have her moment.”

lewis laughs but does wave oscar off as he returns his attention to her. “what they say will string, but trust me, this is not the end of the world. i know it feels like it.”

she nods to herself. “okay, hand me the snacks so i can eat away all my pain. i deserve it.”

after the battle with redy where bada just towers over her...the cameras cut and immediately you're storming up to her

and everyone just thinks its so cute like you're looking up and complaining to her and she's looking down at you, not giving a fuck about what you're saying... she's just glad to be there 😭

you're pouting afterwards so bada just grabs your hand and leads you to where her team is, sits down, and pulls you on top of her.

and then all is well with the world!

this is so random but i would love to hear your opinion on mydramalist as a fellow asian drama lover. because it’s obviously well known as a reliable wiki of sorts in dramaland but i beg to differ. (the only plus i feel being the summary and cast list for info)

i mean, i’ve not seen a single comsec w more than two brain cells as a whole? there’s always complaints about female leads rooted from misogyny, they are never happy about story progression, and i just find so many of them kinda dumb sorry lol. like zero media literacy to be found, insufferable arguments, etc. the star ratings are rly just given to popular dramas w high profile actors too.

and i personally find it disheartening that so many ppl end up referring to mdl when considering dramas because so many gems are then lost and not given appreciation.

anon. anon anon anon if you know the way i sat straight the f*ck up when i saw the notification and then read through this ask bc yes. yes to everything here that is exactly it. almost three fourths of what i've watched this year was either 1. not received well by the general MDL crowd (Moon in the Day. where is the taste brethren to not like MITD and not even for reasons that actually make sense), 2. received well but had a good chunk of people bitching in the comment section, or 3. received well but had the main point of the show (and its relevant characterization) go over their heads. (The Worst of Evil aka TWOE comment section, i am f*cking looking at you. i can count on one hand the number of people who understood what that show was supposed to be about) the one fourth that managed to escape was bc the toxicity did not reach the comment section and everyone was pretty f*cking civil. alas if only it could be like that all of the time

case in point for the ratings example, since we've already briefly tackled the lack of media literacy—j-dramas on MDL are notoriously rated much, much lower than either k- or c-dramas. half of the time that's bc there are less users watching (and rating) them therefore the average is lower but the other half it's bc people simply do not understand good media when they see it. don't get me wrong there's some freaky ass sh*t in the j-drama world that i would not touch with a Grinch level pole but to see MDLers out here talking about how slow j-dramas are and that nothing's happening. have you considered that you are either watching the wrong genre or you shouldn't be watching j-dramas in the first place bc their entire setup and general narrative framing arcs are not your style. have you even thought about that for six seconds or are you too busy expecting it to read like a typical tropey rom-com k-drama with your trending oppas. (no hate on my tropey rom-coms with [most of] said oppas, i need them when i don't want to think i just want to see sh*t on my screen and scream about hot people and the Hand Umbrellas in the Rain and the Back Hold when the male lead catches the female lead before she falls and you have the fifteen second focus on their faces just looking at each other)

and the misogyny. oh God do not get me started on the dichotomy that was the Cult, as we affectionatly called ourselves, on the feeds while THEE sageuk of the year My Dearest was airing (beloved show [that i still need to finish. JangChae i'm sorry ily life hates me like the mf it is 😭], beloved commentary on the feeds. they saw the vision on the feeds) vs the sh*tshow that was the landmine field of the comment section (the takes i saw on Gil Chae, Eun Ae AND Ryang Eum respectively.......... the misogyny wasn't enough we had to add the homophobia into the mix. buy one get one free deal fr fr). you mad man. that sh*t was insane there was a point i banned myself from scrolling farther than the cast section until the show finished airing. i kid you not on average they didn't have even half a braincell. maybe a quarter of a quarter of one. f*cked up just say you are not decent people and go

this is not to say that all of MDL is like this. i have gotten tuned into absolute masterpieces of content (and have tuned others, amen) bc of a comment comparing a show i'm watching to another one or a review being posted in the feeds about a film with less than 500 people interested. i have reconsidered my choice to not watch something after having spirited discussions in private messages discussing the pros and cons of the premise and whether they managed to get it done without f*cking sh*t up. i still contribute semi-regularly by adding relatively unknown actors and crew members to the database so they can get the credit due them. if you know where to look, you can get some good sh*t out of that place. problem is most users who are new to both the site and East/Southeast Asian cinema as a whole don't know where to look, and the cycle continues, and the ratings continue to be skewed/bloated and no one pays attention to the plot, if there even is any to pay attention to.

tl;dr: begging people to not let MDL be the be all end all for their drama recs a la 'well MDL doesn't like it so i won't watch it'. babe we have said MDLers complaining about how the ratings on Viki are too high but in my entire time watching dramas i've found that in the past two to three years the Viki ratings are making more sense than the MDL ones. sit with that for a sec. when you're done branch out and see the world (literally and cinematically), i promise you will be a better person for it

Just read an online article that said Danganronpa could've learned a thing or two from Squid Game and I had to laugh because 1 that's just not true and DR has the ratings and continuity to prove that and 2 the article was just full of bullshit like the V3 villain reveal didn't have much of a twist to it but like that was done intentionally both to get the audience to think deeply about the media they consume and how it could affect them and also to reveal the even BIGGER twist. Like V3 got real fucking meta yall it was so good.

And you think your little 9 episode mini series that pulled a literal Total Drama Leshawna with their only female lead has any right to believe they can hold a candle to the entire DR series??? Please...

Squid Game fans need to back tf up like fr.

Don't get me wrong Squid Game was good, but as someone has seen all the DR games it was predictable. Like I'm no stranger to killing game series so you gotta be on point with the reveals cuz I'm already lookin episode 1 and Squid Game? Eh... nothing surprised me. All the reveals I either thought about and put them in the maybe pile or I just straight up predicted. Another thing is you GOTTA stick to your rules or the audience is gonna lose interest fast. And when they pulled the TD Leshawna just so the girl wouldn't win, it broke the rules and I immediately lost interest like ok this is bs just hurry up and finish. Like Squid Game had its problems and I understand the main theme was Capitalism is evil and screws everyone over, but also you can do that and not have bad and/or rushed writing.

Which is what DR actually did with the Ultimate students in their series. These kids were destined for greatness because Capitalism deemed them extraordinarily useful in the fields they excelled at and those cherished talents brought them to ruin. The script got flipped just like that. Some of them were considered dangerous, a threat on a worldwide level because they were TOO talented. And under the influence of Junko, they literally caused the entire world to end. Now that is a fucking interesting plot about Capitalism and the hope/despair it entails. Because if these kids hadn't been scouted by the government and encouraged to only be good in a certain field at such an extreme degree, then none of this would've never happened.

Like again, Squid Game was fucking good, but it's 9 episodes, clearly rushed in some areas, and just... not gonna hold a candle to a series that's been doing this much longer than it has with so much more content.

the product of an affair between christian montgomery, an esteemed doctor at his hospital - and one of the nurses there, allison dermont. the half sister of caleb montgomery (shoutout 2 alli!)

named after her maternal grandmother (deceased before lydia even turned one) and rosemary because it reminded allison of her childhood (rosemary always in the air, growing from pots on their porch and baked into the bread they’d eat)

growing up, lydia never knew her father. but she knew of him - her mother told her stories often of him, and the work he did to save others. built him up as a hero, a role model, someone admirable and brave and just despite the fact he’d no longer look her in the eyes when crossing paths in the hospital’s hallways. lydia idolized him.

was a very lonely child - her mother worked long hours, and babysitters were often distant. tended to attach herself to them, anyways, clinging to legs and arms and having to be peeled off and scolded (which then resulted in tantrums, of thrown toys and stomping feet and red, tearful faces)

her schoolmates were cruel to her, an easy target as a child - she followed behind the girls who seemed the most well liked, trying to mimic how they were. it’d always been a little off, and a little off-putting, and she cried often.

abandonment issues led to an obsession with perfection - as if she accomplished the most, her father would be blown away with her talents when he finally reached out. it’d always been a hope for her - her father contacting her, bringing her into his life. being a full family, loved and attended to.

strove for the highest marks in all her classes, though there’d been hiccups here and there. she’d done ballet for a number of years before her dance instructor had essentially told her she’d never make it to a company, which led to her abruptly quitting. even put out a portfolio and contacted modeling agencies - she’d done a few small photoshoots as a teenager, but she’d never made it to anything big.

tried her hardest to act and work the part of someone important, elegant and better than who she really was. it showed in the aesthetics she indulged in (thrifted nearly everything she owned, from trinkets to her clothing) and the way she acted. in high school, she trailed behind the popular girls. molded her personality to cater to them, to be more like them. a mean girl, in a way.

did the same when it came to boyfriends and lovers - she’d mold herself into exactly what they wanted, tried to be the perfect girlfriend for them, or sexual partner, or anything. she just wanted the attention, the love. had a myriad of relationships in high school (and it bled into college, too) where she’d give her all, and ultimately end up used and disappointed.

never felt like the first choice, only the second. always the bridemaid, never the bride. never good enough, no matter how hard she tried. but always remained hopeful - idealistic, always thinking that she’d get her turn one day. optimistic, but with lowering self-esteem and a mountain of insecurities.

became something of a habitual liar, in the process - always wanting to seem better than she was, so she lied about where she lived (instead of a measly apartment, she lived in a penthouse) and her accomplishments and her experience, and her feelings and who her parents were.

found something she was genuinely good at during her senior year of high school, when she’d chosen a fashion elective for one of her class periods. the practical aspect, she was good at - creatively? she had nothing to offer.

because of her lack of ideas, she never pursued it further. in college she chose to go into communications, specializing in public relations, though she’d never thought of actually finishing college. it was just a way for her to find a beau, to marry - to leave new york and have children. has always wanted to be a housewife with a white picket fence and 2.5 kids. to be loved and held for the rest of her life.

without cliques in college, it was hard for her to find her footing among peers. joined a sorority, molded her personality once more into something they would desire, and was accepted. got a frat boyfriend until it burned out, and another, and another, until she had something of a reputation.

with all of these expenses adding up - lydia’d never wanted to work a retail job, or food service, or anything measly like that - she found use for her sewing skills in the back of npc shops. worked in a shady operation producing fake designer items. she’d been excellent at producing exact replicas.

it wasn’t a very safe job and it’d ended her up in danger on some occasions, but it paid, and she was desperate.

met caleb for the first time at his mother’s funeral and became obsessed with the idea of having a brother, of being closer to her father somehow. cyberstalked him as much as she could and found radcliffe, where she eventually transferred to when caleb had decided to go back. practically followed him like a lost dog.

got into perkins because she literally pre-wrote her essay to get in and basically sobbed her story in front of secretaries and deans and housing faculty until she’d been granted permission to move in.

currently interning at a company where she has control over their social media accounts, alongside a team of other interns. when she’s feeling particularly upset she’ll post passive aggressive or straight up distraught, distressing messages (tweets, captions, etc.) on their official accounts, sometimes featuring the mascot of the company/brand. they haven’t figured out its her, yet.

i won’t lie. she’s a bit of a mess.

constantly changes her personality to fit whoever she’s talking to, desperate for their approval in even the most minimal ways. consistently lies about literally ... whatever, sometimes for no reason, if it’ll make her seem cooler or better in some way. type of person who wants to one-up others.

Last week, there was a car accident before me, a little ways up the road. As I was in the turn lane to turn into my work, and the accident in the opposite turn lane, them turning left and me turning right, all I saw was the immediate aftermath of a white pickup hitting the back of a blue pickup.

I stared for a bit, then turned into my work, all the while watching the blue pickup limp its way to the side of the road out of the intersection; the white pickup, meanwhile, stayed in the middle of the intersection. Keeping my eyes moving back and forth on the scene, I slowed. Surely, people would stop, right? I thought, but still slowed even more, turning my head, There was an accident right there, and people would stop, right?

Even so, I turned into the parking lot near where the blue pickup what stopped, slowly went down it, all the while thinking I had work soon and people were going to stop.

Only, no one else stopped.

I pulled up near the edge of the parking lot, but not close, stopping and parking near a parked car in its spot - the spots are numbered, and I didn’t want to risk parking in someone’s spot as you can get ticketed by security, but I also didn’t want to pen someone in. But I still stopped and left the car, engine off, keys still in the ignition, wavering for a second that maybe I should grab my phone... But it wasn’t a BAD impact, that I had seen, so I continued on, halfway convinced the person would be okay and I’d nod and leave, feeling somewhat foolish for checking and make me late for my shift.

I just knew that if I’d had an accident, and I’d needed help, I’d have wanted someone to stop.

As I approached the blue pickup, I could see that the back window was bowed in, spider webbed with part of it shattered, leaving a good sized hole, and the person inside, male or female, I couldn’t see yet, was just... Sitting there. So I kind of crept up, moving more towards the back, speaking through the hole in the shattered window. “Hey, are you okay?” I had rehearsed in my head as I parked and walked up, already expecting a quick, “Yeah,”, but when I asked the question, a woman’s voice, tremulous, teary, answered.

I can’t remember what she said, but I remember she was scared. Crying.

I asked if she had a phone, if she could give it to me to call 911. She was obviously hurt, not thinking straight, but she still handed me her phone through the spider webbed glass. Through the hole I was speaking to her through.

It was a smartphone. An Android, I think. I remember her pausing to unlock it, after I had stared at it and handed it back to her, I think, and held it again in my hands.

I don’t know smartphones.

The man who was driving the white pickup truck, still stopped in the middle of the intersection, by that time had come up next to me, saying he hadn’t even seen her, and he was sorry.

Standing there, staring down at this phone, trying to figure out how to use it while still talking to the woman and mind racing because maybe I should just give the phone back and run back to my car... But my car was so far behind me, and this phone was RIGHT HERE.

I ended up handing the phone helplessly to the man who had hit the woman. “I don’t know smartphones,” I said, feeling like, should I trust this man? But he hadn’t run away. He’d stayed. Stopped. Come over to check on the woman...

He didn’t understand the phone, either. Gave it back to me and said he’d just get his own phone to call 911. I tuned him out, then, and tried, once again, to understand this alien screen of icons and pulling open the phone part to even FIND where I could type in 9-1-1. And then, when I found it, staring, trying to think so fast to what I should push to even START the call.

Finally, I thought to try the weird large button icon in the middle, after swiping here, poking there... And I was on the phone with 911.

The woman who answered - it wasn’t my first time calling 911, as I’d called in a few drunken drivers here and there, but this was my first time actually calling in an actual ACCIDENT, where someone was HURT - I recall, was perfect. Calm. Asked me where I was, if I was heading South or North on Highway 99. I replied I was South, right outside my work, the call center. It was a white pickup - the man had who’d hit the woman had walked back and interjected with the make of his vehicle, smoking a cigarette as I privately wondered what he was thinking and thinking how good it was he was still here, his vehicle still, though possibly stuck, in the middle of the intersection - who had hit a blue pickup, and a woman was hurt. How old is the person hurt? I asked the woman. “52,” she answered - really? I thought when I first got a good look at her, she didn’t look 52 at all - and I relayed it, answering more questions, saying the back window was shattered and the woman felt like a baseball bat had hit her in the back of the head.

By then, work security had showed up, and parked behind the white pickup, getting out to direct the flow of traffic around it. I remember thinking, pretty uncharitably, that they didn’t even come by to check on how the woman I was with was doing, just concerned with directing traffic... At the same time I was glad someone was taking control of it. But again, I was more focused on the woman and answering the 911 operator’s questions. Yes, she was hurt, and it would be good to get an ambulance.

Somewhere during that, the woman leaned over, opening the passenger side door for me, and I moved in, after a second of wondering if I was ALLOWED, how silly is that? I stared at her, studied her and turned away as I talked to 911, focusing on how the woman was holding the back of her head and not bleeding... That there was no blood anywhere, but that she was so obviously in pain.

I was so thankful there was no blood anywhere. Even with all that glass everywhere.

Done with her phone, I handed it back to her, finally getting a good look at her aside from the bloodless back of her head and her left hand holding it, leaning into her car and reaching out, rubbing her arm. I asked her name, and, noticing her work ID, said, “Oh, you work for ____, too.” Asked what department she worked in. Anything to keep her talking, really, as well as... I was lost. I’d already had her move, hand me her phone, twice, as well as she’d leaned over to open the car door, and weren’t you supposed to not MOVE them?

Her name was Andrea, and she worked in packing during the season. I told her she was doing everything as perfectly as she should, hand tight on the steering wheel as she cried and talked to me. I kept her talking, told her help was coming, and asked her if there was anyone she wanted me to call for her.

There was someone, she had to search through her phone book for, as I was thinking I could just look for him, but didn’t want to snatch her phone away from her. Finally, I told her I could look him up, thinking she was in shock, and as I was searching through her phone book, work security walked over, asking through the driver’s side window if everyone was alright.

Not thinking, I said yes, he said okay, and walked away. Honestly, he shouldn’t have taken my word for it, but he did.

But then I’d found the guy Andrea had asked for’s number, and called it. But he didn’t answer, so she, noticeably upset, told me someone else. Her neighbor.

I called. Got her. I’d heard Andrea say her name was Sheila. I told her that I was calling on behalf of Andrea, who was in a car accident, and I’d asked her if there was anyone she’d want me to call, and she’d said you. The woman who answered was, understandably, halting and confused, and I turned back to Andrea, asking her what she wanted me to say. “Come get Brandi, and get me,” I thought she said - like a kid? Maybe Andrea has a kid that she needed her neighbor to pick up before coming to get her?, so I repeated it. “What?” the neighbor asked, and I repeated it again, telling her where Andrea was, outside my work, and that I had no idea what hospital she’d be taken to, so it would be faster to come here, if she was close enough. After a few seconds, she agreed, said she was close, I thanked her, and hung up.

“Andrea’s coming to get you,” I said.

“What?” Andrea asked.

And, oh god, I thought. “I mean Sheila. She’s coming.”

“Shelia?”

“Your neighbor? She’s coming to get you.”

“Brandi?”

Feeling just so terribly awkward, I said yes. Apologized. Gave her back her phone.

She continued crying. Saying she hurt. Like a bat had hit her in the back of the head. I continued rubbing her arm, leaning into her car and telling her help was coming. The ambulance was coming. That her neighbor was coming to get her. Anything.

As I leaned in, a piece of glass on the passenger seat below me poked me. Stuck in my fingertip. I pulled it out, dropped it in the car, somewhere, and pretended it hadn’t happened. Only a small bead of blood ever welled up. It wasn’t important, but I still made sure to be a bit more careful after that.

By then, at some point, the white pickup truck was suddenly parked in front of hers, and I thought, of course the security guy checked then, no immediate danger of the intersection present anymore. Had the guy driven his pickup over? Had it been pushed? I didn’t know.

I kept on rubbing her arm, knowing, at least, media told me it would be reassuring. Just needing to give her something to focus on, perhaps, than the pain pounding in her head.

Finally, a motorcycle cop drove up behind her. He talked to her, asked her if she was okay. Asked if I was her friend, the other driver, or...

“A witness,” I answered.

He nodded and said, when she mentioned that her head hurt, that he could see her back window was shattered in, that he didn’t doubt it had hit her.

She told him she had her friend coming, who could drive her to the hospital. Reached over for her wallet on the passenger seat before I could fully decide that it would be okay to pick it up for her to hand to him her insurance inside it, having to shake off pieces of glass.

I know, from firsthand experience, that ambulances are hellishly expensive things, so I understood her reticence to be taken. But the policeman still suggested that she stay to get checked out by the ambulance in case they thought she should go in with them, or if it would be okay if she went with a friend. That made a lot of sense to me, too, even though I also could tell they were placating suggestions.

I’d already moved her more than she should, I thought, again. Including her reaching for her wallet. Why hadn’t I opened her car door first, or at least asked her if I could? How stupid, Sarah. How stupid.

As the policeman talked to her, the firefighters showed up. Parked behind her, across the intersection so they wouldn’t block the way into my work.

That’s when a thought hit me, and I looked back towards my car, realizing I hadn’t checked on it, and that the keys were still in the ignition, with it being unlocked. I was glad to see it was still there, but not even, truly, relieved. More like I was chiding myself in the first place, even as I turned back to Andrea. How strange this moment had made me so recklessly unconcerned. I’ve NEVER left my car unlocked before. Perhaps it’s because I’d expected to be turned away as soon as I’d checked up on the person?

As the firefighters walked up, I knew they were going to want to talk to her. That the ambulance, finally showing up as well, was going to contain paramedics who would want to see her. And they were more important.

So, I think, I told her I was leaving. Or somehow made it clear that I was going now that help was here.

“Thank you. Thank you, thank you,” she said, grabbing my hands and squeezing them.

I nodded. Squeezed her hands back. “I’m Sarah.” And, after a second, I added, “I’m in DEA.” Like she CARED.

“Oh, I know that. My boyfriend used to work there.”

I nodded again, thinking it was probably the first person she’d wanted me to call. Then, standing there awkwardly, I wanted to say something reassuring. Positive. “I hope everything’s okay,” or “I hope everything works out.” But I couldn’t say any of that, and I knew that. I didn’t KNOW if everything was going to be okay. And neck and head things HURT.

So I stuttered. Nodded my head. Barely said what could amount to words, stopping and starting with, “I hope... I...” Finally, I just squeezed her hands, and drew back as the firefighters converged on her.

I backed up a few steps, took a breath, then turned to find the policeman.

“Hey, do you need to talk to me?” I asked, already thinking how late to work I probably was.

He did. Asked me my general information, and asked me what I saw. I answered as best as I could. What I remembered, thought I saw.

“Will you need to talk to me?” I asked, wanting to, at least, inform him that while at work, my phone has to be turned off, and I wouldn’t be able to answer any calls. Not that I expected him to call, but that I still felt it important enough to inform him I wouldn’t be able to answer if he DID need to.

He pretty much smirked and told me he probably wouldn’t need to talk to me. And, god, like, DUH. Both drivers were here. The man hadn’t run. But I still felt obligated.

I walked away feeling like I hadn’t achieved anything.

As I started my car again, briefly backing up to give myself more room to drive around the curve in the parking lot, a car slowly drove into a parking spot to my left, nearest where Andrea was parked. I paused. Started rolling my window down. Perhaps this was Brandi. Maybe I should get out and ask her if she was, tell her I was Sarah...

But she just looked at the mass of emergency vehicles and turned, walking the opposite direction, like an employee needing to get to work on time.

Feeling foolish, I rolled my window back up, and drove around the parking lot to where I normally park for work... All the while wondering if that had really happened. Theorizing that I was going to cry AT SOME POINT.

That I couldn’t believe no one else had stopped.

Walking into work, passing people I knew and scanning my badge in, I made it until I was only a few desks from my coworkers and my own desk before I started sobbing. Crying. All the adrenaline I’d expected to leave me did, and I couldn’t even stuff my hand into my mouth to stop it.

My team leader scrambled up, alarmed... And I just broke. Tried to keep my voice down for the people on the phone on the other side of the building... But I cried. Explained what happened. How I’d expected to be more than just five minutes late, as I’d thought that had taken more time as well as I thought I hadn’t arrived at work so early.

“I thought surely other people would have stopped,” I said, “But they didn’t. They didn’t...”

Later, I realized I had told the policeman incorrectly that I thought they had been in the center lane. Because that didn’t make sense with my mental image of seeing the result of the impact, forward and to the left of me. They must have been in the turn lane.

But of course he never called me.

Still, that, and Andrea’s first words when I leaned into her car to rub her arm and talk to her, still stick with me.

“It’s even worse,” Andrea had sniffed, crying, staring at me as if beseeching me to help her, face wracked with pain and fear, “Because I was just evicted yesterday.”

“Oh,” I’d replied, staring at her, and averting my eyes as I’d finished with a, “I’m sorry.”

How would she have money? I’d thought throughout the whole thing. She has no home. No wonder she doesn’t want an ambulance. God, I can’t imagine what she must be thinking. And she’d still asked for her neighbor to pick her up... I’d be terrified, too. What bad luck. What bad, bad luck.

...I’m just... If I was in her position, I’d have wanted someone there, too. And I’m glad to have been there, not letting my, “Someone’s going to stop, aren’t they?” stop me.

Because no one else DID stop.

Only me.

And I still can’t believe I did. It doesn’t seem real.

But I’m glad I did stop.

I’m glad I did.
