UNRELIABLE NARRATORS; SIDE C

*NOTE; Due to the length of Harrowhark's propaganda, it is out of order and below Kuzco's propaganda

Kuzco Propaganda:

The movie starts with them doing the voiceover, telling us how he'll show us that evil people ruined his life for no reason at all, before proceeding to show him fire a loyal advisor, announce to a guy he'll chase him and his whole village away from the homes they've been living in for generations, just to build a summer villa with pool for himself, have a guy thrown off a window for being on his way when he was freedancing, etc., etc. Then as his life is ruined and we get back to the point at the beginning from which he had started the flash back which took half the movie, he's like "see? for no reason!"

Harrowhark Propaganda:

She gave herself a lobotomy and gives completely incorrect flashbacks to the previous book. Things that straight up did not happen. Gaslight gatekeep girlboss.

She’s schizophrenic (confirmed by the author) and also lives in a world with necromancy and ghostly revenants. She’s not just an unreliable narrator for readers, she’s an unreliable narrator of her own internal experience. She knows this and has to work with people around her to compensate for it. Descent into spoilerville below. Seriously Do Not Read if you want to read these books. There’s also the little matter about how she is *not actually the narrator* of a huge chunk of the story that we are initially led to believe is being told from her perspective.

(Spoilers) Holy shit she is THE most unreliable narrator. This gremlin gave herself a lobotomy so that she could forget about Gideon Nav, the most important person in her life (for magic soul-preserving reasons) so half of the second book in the series is spent gaslighting the reader about a book they just read. She comes up with an entire alternate version of the events of the first book in the series to carefully exclude any mentions of Gideon, and any time someone says ‘Gideon’ in front of her she LITERALLY has a stroke and/or an intercranial hemorrhage as her brain overwrites the word with someone else’s name. God occasionally intentionally triggers her memory revision to get out of difficult conversations. She also hallucinates ALL the time (unrelated to the lobotomy). She shows up at her frenemy’s room in the middle of the night (think little kid stumbling to their parents’ room and saying “I frew up”) to ask her to come check underneath her bed for the corpse that’s been wandering the space station. When frenemy checks underneath the bed, frenemy claims not to see anything, and Harrow is such an unbelievably unreliable narrator that it’s an open question in the fandom as to whether frenemy genuinely didn’t see the corpse or if frenemy was just yanking Harrow’s chain. Harrow is also haunted by a literal ghost that fucks up her already fucked up alternate history. Girlie will pick up a piece of paper and read from it the most violent and haunting piece of prose ever composed, when in reality all that’s written on the paper is the elementary school Superman S*. I am NOT joking that is a real goddamn scene. Harrow was created to win this poll. Harrowhark is simply the unreliable narrator of all time. Can’t remember shit because of a lifetime of trauma? Check. Maybe lying to yourself and those around you a bit? Most definitely. Being gaslit by the survivors you depend on to orient you to reality? For sure. How about a little bit of canon schizophrenia? She’s got it all. Ghosts? Or something? Spirits that are attached in some way to your body and are not perceivable by others? Sure, sure! But how about spirits that are attached in some way to your body and are gonna use you to hijack others’ bodies and maybe kill God, too? Absolutely. Wee bit of DIY brain surgery? If it would make you an unreliable narrator, friends, then Harrowhark Nonagesimus has been there, been subjected to that!

Okay I don't know that much about this series since I haven't convinced myself to read all of the first book, but this is my blorbo in law so I'd feel bad not spreading propaganda (all of what I'm saying is something I've read, as to prevent myself from straight up submitting misinformation). So all of Harrow's unreliable narration takes place in the second book, Harrow the Ninth. Basically, without her even seemingto acknowledge it, Harrow's brain is very fucked up during this book, to the point where even she's not sure how reliable her narrative is. There's many questions left unclear as a result of her fucked up little brain, like what's real, what's fake, whether we can trust her judgement, whether even she can trust her own judgement, whether her original cavalier is dead or not (Harrow is convinced she is), etc. Let me tell you, I adore unreliable narrators who aren't even that sure if they're reliable. I have yet to eat that trope up here in this circumstance, but this poll might not run again by the time I do, so for now, here's my messed up blorbo in law.

OKAY SO REMEMBER MY GIDEON SUBMISSION? HARROW DOESN’T! SPOILERS AHEAD BECAUSE SHE LOBOTOMIZED HERSELF TO FORGET GIDEON BECAUSE THAT’S A HEALTHY WAY TO GRIEVE AND THEN IN THE ONLY PARTS OF HER BOOK THAT SHE NARRATES (THE REVISED CANAAN HOUSE PARTS) IT’S LITERALLY A ROOM FULL OF GHOSTS HER BRAIN SUMMONED TO DEAL WITH THE FACT THAT SHE CUT HER BRAIN IN HALF TO FORGET GIDEON. she also is a) haunted and b) psychotic, experiencing hallucinations her entire life of both the ghosts haunting her and less supernatural hallucinations- bells tolling, bones rattling, her parents (some of the only dead people NOT haunting her), etc! in the revised history of canaan house that her brainghosts invent, she brings along someone who knows about her psychosis to help reality check her when she tells him go! her caregiver as a child and support when she got older, crux, is a horrible man- but at one point, when someone other than harrow is in harrow’s body and tells him “i am not harrowhark, i am sorry,” his response is simply “aye, you’ve said that before too. who are you then, if not my lady harrowhark?” showing his familiarity with her psychosis and his love for the child he wouldn’t dare see as a daughter. but enough about that lets talk about her unreliable narration! she lies about her feelings of course but she also simply hides the truth from everyone, all the time, compulsively. also literally the entire section of her book that she narrates is a lie she’s telling US about a lie she’s telling HERSELF and no one understands even a little bit of the truth until like the last act of the book. queen.

Hi hi hi!!! I wanna know more about the roller skating 👀

hi sorry it took me so long to get to this!!! i just have no idea where to begin HDSJDH

so i guess one thing i’ll start with is the different disciplines. ill give ice skating equivalents as much as i can so it makes more sense. so there’s:

freestyle/freeskating, which is the one with jumps and spins like you see the most on tv. i did this one for a long time but i don’t care for jumps very much so i eventually stopped. (love spins though)

freedance, which is the equivalent of ice dance if you’ve ever seen that. it’s the one with all the footwork and “twizzles” (twizzles are literally so hard jesus christ). i did this one for not as long because i started doing it started later on but it was my favorite. it was the most expressive and open one to me where i had the most freedom to perform. i still miss it. (theres also team freedance, where a guy and girl do a freedance together, but i never did this. it’s really complicated and fun to watch though and also team freedance lifts are kind of insane)

dance, which is basically like doing a ballroom dance pattern/steps around the floor. there’s team dance where you do it like real ballroom dancing, with a partner, and solo dance where you do it by yourself. team dance is scary asf and i did it for like two years max when i was maybe 10ish. i almost did it again but it was scary and i wasnt the right height for the guy so then i ended up not.

style dance, which is like a freedance except you stick one round of a regular dance pattern somewhere in the middle of it. i did this for like a year because mostly only the higher up levels and older age groupings have to, and i wasn’t there for a long time before i quit, but it was fun. (there’s also a team version of this, but ditto from team freedance, i did not do it)

figures, which is a totally different thing where you stand on one leg and follow circles painted on the floor. you have to do your best to stay on the line. you also add one foot turns eventually. it looks and sounds really boring, but it’s incredibly fun when you’re at a high level. it’s incredibly incredibly precise. sometimes whether or not your foot was on the line could be a matter of something as small as the way you angled your ear. out of all the things i did i was the best at this. the precision gave me a headache sometimes but at the same time it was my favorite part 😅

loops, which are like tinier figures (the circles you follow are a lot smaller) and instead of doing turns and stuff you make literal, and i mean LITERAL, loops on the floor. there’s usually a precisely proportioned loop drawn on the floor so you have something to follow as well. it sounds weird, but it’s equally fun and scary. they’re a lot of fun. (well, except when you’re doing them on a really slippery floor, and your foot keeps losing traction and slipping out from under you 😂)

pairs, which is the one you see on tv with ice skating where there’s a team of a guy and a girl and the guy lifts the girl and spins her and throws her. (btw, im not exaggerating when i say throws her, theres for real these things where the guy just throws the girl into a jump and she has to rotate and land it by herself. i hated these with a passion because they were scary. there’s also another similar thing where the guy throws the girl and she rotated, but he catches her at the end. i hated those slightly less because they were a little less scary.) also, oh my god, i have insane stories from doing lifts, holy shit. there’s some lifts that i really liked because they were fun and secure and i could see everything and some that i hated because they felt unstable. there’s at least one lift that i personally think should be banned because it’s so unstable. it’s also different than ice skating pairs because there’s a few things you do in rollerskating pairs that would be so insanely dangerous on ice skates that they don’t do them (see: The Guillotine Spin ™) (please ask me about this, i have so many stories and i could go on forever and it’s my favorite to talk about because it’s insane, it needs its own post truly)

quartet, which is like. a showy thing in a group of four people. i never did it so i don’t know that much, but i did watch people i know do it.

show numbers. i despise these because whenever we did them there was SO MUCH DRAMA (once again i have so many stories it could use it’s own post) but if done well they can actually be a lot of fun. basically it’s just a big group of people performing a show together, with some tricks like pinwheels and group circles, and other things i have no idea how to explain. usually there’s a theme and everybody has costumes. (i’ve been all kinds of things, including but not limited to a chicken and also a dragonfly)

precision team. i never did this and only saw it rarely, so sorry if my explanation isn’t as good here. basically it’s a lot like a show number but the goal is for everybody to be as perfectly in sync as possible with every step. there’s also usually more people in these, which makes it even harder. they’re kind of insane to watch, but they’re not very common.

i should probably make another entire post to explain how competitions work, especially because it’s different in america than everywhere else. (the american “we have to do everything differently” still shows up a lot in this sport, which is a whole other subject i could also talk a lot about. there’s differences in age groupings, skill level groupings, scoring styles (i could go on about this forever too) and even the style of how you do dance steps between america and the rest of the world. it’s kind of annoying at times.) but one thing that’s the same with ice skating is the regionals->nationals->worlds pipeline. however i think ice skating also has sectionals before regionals which roller figure skating does not have. there’s also other international competitions aside from worlds, which are very fun. i have plenty of stories from when i went to those, as well as plenty of stories from both regionals and nationals. crazy shit always happens at competitions, lmao.

and there’s also achievement tests, where judges come in and judge your skills im a certain area and you get either a pass or fail. also when you pass they send you a little pin in the mail! i have a ribbon with most of mine stuck to it (i lost a few though, lol). i can also judge lower level tests which i do from time to time.

anyways, this is just an overview!! i’m telling you i only just skimmed the surface with this post. it’s a very insane sport with a lot of different aspects going on all at once. i don’t even know how i keep track of all the crazy stories i have, but i’m happy to tell more of them !!!

So the World Figure Skating Championships are over, and I have many things I have to flail about, so here they are! First of all, ice dance!

Ice dance is usually my fave, and it did not disappoint this year. Chock & Bates are better than they've ever been, I love both their programs this year. They def have my fave rhythm dance this year, and I LOVED the 80s theme for this year's rhythm dance, it's been so much fun seeing what all the teams come up with. (This is the only year I've watched every single team in the rhythm dance because they've all made such fun routines.) I really love how Maddie & Evan have been finding new and different movement in their skating this year, and they have this swagger that's so cool and just says 'look at us, we're confident, we're champions'. I'm really glad they were able to win a world title with a clean skate this time, since they were obviously disappointed about not having that last year.

But for me, Gilles & Poirier were the champions of my heart. Their Wuthering Heights freedance is a masterpiece, and as an english literature nerd, I especially appreciated that they brought out the tension and conflict of the book characters in their dance, as well as the beauty and romance. They really, really got it, in a way a lot of people don't. I wish they would have won the gold, but silver is still a step up from last year, and I think they can still do it next year if they keep getting better and better like they have been. Honestly I didn't love their free dance when I first saw it, but it's grown on me throughout the season, and they've been doing it a little better each time. I finally fell in love with it at Four Continents, it was absolutely breathtaking and they totally blew me away. Even with almost no one in the audience to really give them a reaction at that event, they fucking brought it, and I felt like they were really gonna contend for the title at Worlds after that. I was a little disappointed when they placed third in the rhythm dance, but I knew they would kill in the free, and they totally did. I'm so happy they had such an amazing skate in front of a home crowd at Worlds, and they so utterly deserved to win that free dance! I used to think of them as the weirdos who always did campy stuff, but they've really matured and brought that storytelling sense to deeper, more interesting stuff, and I'm very excited to see what they'll do next.

While I feel that Piper & Paul's freedance at worlds was the performance of the season, my actual favorite freedance in general belongs to Julia Turkkila & Matthias Versluis. It's every bit as much of a masterpiece as Piper and Paul's. So many new, interesting shapes, so perfectly executed, it's modern and ethereal and ugh!! So good!! I really do think Turkkila and Versluis are undermarked most of the time, they have the most perfect posture and carriage and extension of any team out there, and they make their lifts seem to defy gravity and float, that one they open their freedance with is insane, they make it look so effortless, like she doesn't weigh anything, and he's just like, lifting a feather. The cynical part of me wonders if they'd be ranked higher if they were Ice Academy skaters, since it seems like all the Ice Academy teams move up really quickly, regardless of if they've improved that quickly or not. Most of them are very good, but there are a few that don't have the polish of Turkkila & Versluis that ended up ahead of them with pretty similar technical content, so I wonder how much of it is political. But I won't dwell on negatives, because there was a lot of good to be celebrated!

Honestly I used to find Guignard & Fabbri boring to watch, but the last two seasons they've really gotten much better in terms of presentation, and now they've finally got the whole package of being artists as well as technicians. They definitely had an unfortunate worlds freedance, with too many little things going wrong, but in general I like both their programs this year, and good for them hanging on to bronze.

I'm really disappointed that my other faves Hawayek & Baker decided not to compete this year, I would have loved to have seen their programs in competition, they would have slayed. (They posted their rhythm and freedances they were working on this year on their instagrams, def go watch if you haven't seen yet, they are AMAZING!) And apparently Kaitlyn was dj for Worlds this year, so at least she's still there in some capacity and not abandoned the skating world entirely. I really hope they decided to come back next year!

All in all it was very exciting and fun to watch, there were some great younger teams like Lim & Quan and Mrazkova & Mrazek that did really well who I'll be interested to see progress in the future.

All in all, it was a great Worlds and I think it's shaping up to be a great field for the next Olympics!

Love this shot of Isadora Duncan, which was taken in 1918. She’s frozen in time, but you can soooo feel her moving. Isadora has always been a big inspiration to me. I love how she had the guts to break the rules, both in the way she danced and in the way she lived her life. Even her death was unusual... her neck broken by a scarf she was wearing when it caught in the wheel of a car.
