Been feeling so uninspired today so I just binge watched Norsemen and doodled some poopy sketches of some of my fave characters. If you haven’t watched Norsemen, do yourself a favour and put it on your Netflix list now!! It is a brilliant Norwegian comedy series

I actually really enjoyed Netflix's Norsemen. Orm is a very interesting villain because he's so meek and "empathetic" (a trait which he uses to manipulate others, often unsuccessfully, which makes him somewhat sympathetic). He's a villain in that, despite how sensitive he is, he is quick to betray others for his own personal gain.
Also it's the only show I've ever watched where, I personally, felt that the rape jokes were funny--some of the time, anyways. As a victim, I do have my triggers, so others may disagree, as triggers are unique to each experience. But for me, most of the jokes about rape seemed to be on how the Viking society takes rape to a satirical degree of no big deal, rape is so incredibly accepted in their society that it seems dark humored, pointing out how easily these things can be normalized. The joke isn't usually on the victim, but on the perpetrators. And I think that's an important distinction. Jokes that point out how easily rape can be accepted in society tell the same narrative as victims tell.
One problematic rape joke that sticks out to me is when Orm is dressed as a woman and raped by a man, but he ends up genuinely enjoying it because he is gay. The show can be homophobic like this in their treatment of the only gay character on the show.
Another would be when Liv is going to be raped by the jarl and she turns out to actually want it. Some could argue that this scene perpetuates the idea that women secretly want to be raped, which is a valid criticism. In my own opinion, the show has a variety of women with a variety of personalities. Liv isn't the one female character in a group of men who bears the burden of women's representation. That, and all of the characters have ridiculous flaws.
I am really disappointed that they killed off Froya at the end of season 3. Her ridiculous penis necklace rape trophy turned the narrative on its head and points out how silly it looks to modern day to have someone brag about and keep such trophies. By swapping the sex of the perpetrator, it makes the behavior obvious.
More importantly, she was the only female warrior in the show. We know from archeological finds that Viking women did participate in raids and combat. I wish the show hadn't killed off the one character who represented this type of woman. I really enjoyed her personality. She seemed very level headed, as when she answers with violence it's dictated by honor or love or her job as a raider. She's strong but not an asshole. When Liv confronts her about sleeping with her husband Arvid, even though Froya actually loves Arvid and Liv doesn't, Froya breaks off the relationship because she wants to be a good person.
Anyways I thought the show was problematic but overall funny, they play with some edgy themes which is usually hit and miss. I wouldn't give it any awards and I wouldn't try to convince anyone who disliked the show to enjoy it because it certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea, you do need a certain sense of dark humor to enjoy it.
