I think the biggest thing that's helped me to stop being annoyed by odd charactersation in fandom media is realising that much of it isn't really about its ostensible source material. It's basically a bunch of nerds re-inventing the commedia dell'arte from first principles. You've got roughly a dozen broadly sketched archetypes with pre-defined roles, and while they may appear in guises taken from popular media, it's really always the same "characters" in a variety of masks. Sometimes the Grumpy DILF wears a Bruce Wayne mask and hangs out in the Batcave; sometimes the Grumpy DILF wears a Luke Skywalker mask and has telekinesis; it doesn't terribly matter what Bruce Wayne or Luke Skywalker are "really" like in in their respective source material, because the persona is just a framing device – this week the Grumpy DILF is a superhero, next week he's a space mystic, and so forth. What will the Grumpy DILF be next?

The constant fandom whiplash over Maglor is funny actually. "He's the good one" "he's the worst one" "he's soft and gentle" "he's a violent warrior." STOP. he's barely a character. He's got like one long paragraph of canon across the Silm and relevant HoME - he's whoever you want him to be babes

anyone else out there think severus is just a chronic pain haver. i know the dark mark pain is real, but i feel like he might be miserable in more ways than just mentally in other ways

Somewhat more controversially - beyond just well-written characters, I think a lot of people find themselves repeatedly drawn to particular Types of characters. And I think the frequency with which those types appear, and the particular flavor of those types, is often (unnecessarily!) gendered. (Sticking with the espionage theme: it’s pretty difficult to find clever, calculating, socially astute female spy characters whose tradecraft doesn’t hinge primarily or at least very heavily on their sex appeal). TL;DR even very well-written female characters are often (unnecessarily!!!) confined to a much more limited set of narrative roles and archetypes.
And while I’m definitely not saying this is something we should all just accept completely uncritically, I do think it’s a pretty undeniable factor in why a lot of people’s lists of favorite blorbos might be kinda dude-heavy.

I have been thinking about the end of 7x04 and nothing else for days (thanks abc) but with Buck's discovery of self and his new not so new bisexuality I've been also thinking about Eddie. (Yes I have Buddie brainrot thanks for asking.)
Now, stay with me here, I am so excited to watch Buck's storyline play out but my fave is Eddie. And as much as everyone seems to be all in on the jealous Eddie train, I don't want that? Like if it happens it'll be fun but I really just want a super respectful and supportive best friend Eddie.
I'd really like for Eddie to not have to have a parallel journey of discovery to Buck.
I think it would be great if Eddie had just always known he(himself) was queer. This man is terrible at registering flirting unless it is absolutely blatant and in a place where it makes sense (ex: drunk girls at a club). It would make sense to me that rather than needing to realize that he is attracted to/likes guys, he would need to realize that he actually has a shot. He's been with women because it can just be easier in our hetro-focused world, but also maybe he's never liked a guy enough to risk it. Or maybe it took him a bit to get over his compulsory heteronormativity in regards to having a son. A voice in his head telling him that his son needs a mom more than he needs a partner.
Also I feel like Eddie compartmentalizes his feelings/relationships, so Buck is absolutely in the friend category because he was straight, only now he's not straight but he's still only in the friend box because Eddie has a girlfriend and Buck is dating someone else. I think it would take both of those relationships ending to really allow himself to stop and look and go...
oh you're right here
