Stop using AI. You are killing artists. I am not joking, and I will not be nice about it.

How Capitalism turned AI into something bad
Tumblr media
AI "Art" sucks. AI "writing" sucks. Chat GPT sucks. All those fancy versions of "fancy predictive text" and "fancy predictive image generation" actually do suck a lot. Because they are bad at what they do - and they take jobs away from people, who would actually be good at them.
But at the same time I am also thinking about what kind of fucking dystopia we live in, that this had to turn out that way.
You know... I am an autistic guy, who has studied computer science for quite a while now. I have read a lot of papers and essays in my day about the development of AI and deep learning and what not. And I can tell you: There is stuff that AI is really good and helpful for.
Currently I am working a lot with the evaluation of satellite imagery and I can tell you: AI is making my job a ton easier. Sure, I could do that stuff manually, but it would be very boring and mind numbing. So, yeah, preprocessing the images with AI so that I just gotta look over the results the AI put out and confirm them? Much easier. Even though at times it means that my workday looks like this: I get to work, start the process on 50GB worth of satellite data, and then go look at tumblr for the rest of the day or do university stuff.
But the thing is that... You know. Creative stuff is actually not boring, manial stuff where folks are happy to have the work taken off their hands. Creative work is among those jobs that a lot of people find fulfilling. But from the feeling of fulfillment you cannot eat. But now AI is being used to push down the money folks in creative jobs can make.
I think movie and TV writing is a great example. When AI puts out a script, that script is barely sensible. Yet, the folks who actually make something useful out of it get paid less than they would, if they did it on their own.
Sure, in the US the WGA made it clear that they would not work with studios doing something like that - but the US is not the whole world. And in other countries it will definitely happen.
And that... kinda sucks.
And of course even outside of creative fields... There is definitely jobs that are going to get replaced by automation and artificial intelligence.
The irony is that once upon a time folks like Keynes were like: "OMG, we will get there one day and it is going to be great, because a machine is going to do your work, and you are gonna get paid for it." But the reality obviously is that: "A machine is going to do the work and the CEO is going to get an even bigger bonus, while you sleep on the streets, where police will then violate you for being homeless."
You know, looking at this from the point of view of Solarpunk: I absolutely think that there is a place in a Solarpunk future for AI. Even for some creative AI. But all under the assumption that first we are going to erradicate fucking capitalism. Because this does not work together with capitalism. We need to get rid of capitalism first. And no, I do not know how to start.

All I'm saying is, if I found out that someone put one of my incomplete fanfictions into ChatGPT as a way to finish it, I'd never publish another fanfiction again. Or if I did, they'd only be for private discord servers or sent to people I trust.

I am getting SO SICK of reading product descriptions that were clearly written by chatGPT. Like, I can see you using those flowery adjectives, the rhythm it speaks with--it's a pattern, and I can see that you literally just plugged in what it spit out. It does this specific thing where it combines over-the-top emotional appeal and very bland facts about the product that gets super recognizable. Like, just look at this text, from a very real product website:
Seamlessly blend aspiration with action as you capture your objectives, mapping out your path daily, weekly, and monthly. Beyond mere goals, this box heralds a journey of profound self-discovery and fulfillment, inspiring you to manifest your direction with unwavering resolve.
That is 100% from chatGPT. "Manifest your direction with unwavering resolve." No human would write that! It scans ok, it even sounds vaguely purpley poetic--but it also does not make actual sense. I need brands to get that using chatGPT to write your shit tells me two things: one, you don't know how to sell me your product in your own words, and two, you think I can't tell the difference between AI drivel and even the cheapest of cheap copywriters.

Gotta vent about this... (Or: Fuck ChatGPT)
Just a short vent, but man, this starts to get on my nerves.
As you know, I am still at university and specifically I am doing Geoinformatics. Now, on one hand there is one class I am taking right now that is very much about the risk/value of using computers to take over tasks for you. In that class it is mostly about navigation and how to navigate.
I mean, we saw it in that one test thingie two days ago, too. We were just given a map to navigate with. And my (much younger) fellow students looked at the map like: "???" Now, yes, that map was on a screen. But it was a map. It got presented to us as a map. Not a navigation. Still, someone ended up asking: "Wait, how do we know where we are?"
Now, back in my days (old man yells at cloud) we still had to use actual street maps to navigate. And seeing how many people struggle to navigate without their phone I am like: Folks, you need to learn this. If you are in a situation without your phone, be it because some catastrophe has your internet knocked out or because you are out of batery you need to find your ways somehow.
And in general... Call me "books are for people too lazy to learn stuff by heart"-Plato, but I still think people should learn some basic skills.
I saw it in another class, too. Or see it quite a lot recently in general. ChatGPT. We get asked a question or given a task and what do they all do? Ask ChatGPT. And then go blindly trust whatever ChatGPT spits out.
That I find most concerning. Because I saw it a lot recently with stuff that concerns critical thinking skills. And critical thinking is just so fucking important. You should not fucking outsource it.
Like sorry, but no. I am very much not okay with that.

My parents are finally listing the tiny cottage on their land on Air BnB (before anyone freaks out, they live super rural, their listing won’t be destroying any local economies) and they asked me to write a blurb for them
Considering that I’m the only one of their children to grow up on the land, and I’m a writer, that makes sense right?
Well my brother and his wife went ahead and asked ChatGPT 🙃 BECAUSE THE AI KNOWS MORE ABOUT MY CHILDHOOD HOME, RIGHT??? BECAUSE THE FUCKING COMPUTER CAN DO A BETTER JOB THAN ME, RIGHT???
I got replaced by AI in my own fucking family. And this isn’t the first time my tech ass siblings have pushed my buttons using AI. Like, I feel like I can’t fucking escape this shit sometimes
