So Discord decided in all of their genius in their newest mobile update to drop the old, perfectly functional UI in exchange for the universally hated new UI. If you’ve tried it for a second, then you probably know how clunky it is. I haven’t touched it since it was first launched and I’m currently avoiding using it because I highly doubt it improved.

So don’t update Discord if you hate terrible UI design and maybe leave a review or complaint in their support because this just fucking sucks

Have mentioned this in my tanthamore head cannons but I thought I’d expand. so The Willow cast drunk:

- Jade: the lightest of weight, just the smell of red wine makes her woozy. She rarely drinks and when she does 3 is her max. she gets super giggly, and everything is funny. Her balance goes out the window immediately and she cannot stand on her own or walk in a straight line. She usually just ends up clinging to kit the whole night. Her cheeks also flush like bright red.

- Airk: light weight. 1-4 drinks. man whore. Need I say more?

- Graydon: standard tolerance. He has like Amy Santiago drunk stages, from 1-6. so he’s a different Graydon at each drink. Drink 1: he gets really quiet and a little sleepy (not too noticeable). drink 2: chatterbox. He goes from being the quietest in the room to being unable to shut up. Drink 3: spontaneous singing/ flute playing. Drink 4: he starts waxing poetics and life statements about how the world is beautiful. Has philosophical conversations with random people. drink 5: rubber knees can’t stand up. Drink 6: depression. He has a full existential crisis and goes catatonic on the floor.

- Willow: moderate tolerance. He drinks fairly regularly and can have 1-7 drinks. When he’s drunk it’s the only time he’s funny. Has one drink and is suddenly a standup comedian.

- Elora: surprisingly a heavy weight can stand 1-10 drinks. She’s the overly affectionate emotional drunk. She says I love you to everyone every 5 minutes and somehow ends up braiding some random girls hair in the bathroom.

- Boorman: heavy weight. 1-17 drinks. pranks on pranks on pranks. No one is safe. He and kit should not be allowed to drink together. They team up and become a menace to society. He also has no balance and falls over a lot.

- Kit: heavy weight. 1-20 drinks When she’s drinks she gets so over confident and pulls pranks. She’s ready to arm wrestle everyone in the tavern and absolutely gets into fights. Also gets super flirty with Jade.

- Scorpia: heavy weight champion. Literally has never been drunk because she’ll have 20 drinks and feel absolutely nothing. Kit tried out out drink her once and just about died by the time Scorpia felt anything at all.

Update: ate some food and figured out how to download an old version of Discord. Sorry for freaking out and an absolute enormous thanks to @/javascriptx64 for posting the instructions to its blog

And Discord, if you're reading this, this is the most unintuitive, ugly, god fucking awful update I have seen in my life. And I remember the early Internet! Change it back now and shove the new layout so far up your ass it'll have to be surgically removed.

Actually seeing people lose their discord discriminator makes me fucking infuriated. Ive had “#4222” since 9/11 of 2016 and it makes it so that theres only one lithominium to exist! There should be more lithominiums!! 9998 of them!! not just one!

Hey, you. Are you annoyed at the new Discord update and want to go back to the old UI*?

It's actually really easy to do. First things first, you need to uninstall Discord. Once that's done, locate an APK file of a legacy version of Discord. Anything is fine as long as it's before version 206 (for my testing I used version 204) https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/discord-inc/discord-chat-for-gamers/ here's the website that I used for mine. Make sure that you use a stable version of the application as you will be dealing with less jankyness that way. (if you use an .apkm file you'll need an additional application that can unpackage the compressed version of that like APKMirror)

Once you've installed this legacy version, you're going to have to log into your account and access the beta version of the new, current UI by sending a ✨

Now before you go through the same method to disable it, while it's enabled navigate over to the setting>appearance and scroll down until you see a switch to toggle of the New Layout. Once this is done, it's disabled and it'll stay off. Even into modern versions of the application. I'm on version 208 with the old UI.

*This only works on Android devices, I'm sure that it can also be done on Apple devices, but as I don't own one, I can't help find a way to get it working for you. Sorry

for everyone who's tired of discord, i want to introduce you to the matrix protocol.

its an open source messaging protocol a bit like IRC but much easier for modern internet users to figure out and its brought up to modern standards.

it's like email in that it's a protocol, so it cant be owned by any one company, and you can choose between a variety of hosts and clients while still being able to communicate with people using different combinations of matrix hosts and clients. so if you're signed up with a matrix host that starts doing some fuck shit like discord, you can switch to a different one without having to uproot your whole social circle.

the client that I use and really like a lot is Element. If you're used to discord, that's a great one to start with, because the UI is very discord-inspired. I also use the matrix foundation's own host for my address (so i have a :matrix.org address) but the matrix website has a list of hosts and clients that you can sign up with and use. if you understand how email works, it's really the same idea! and once you have your address and client, using it is very similar to using discord.

matrix even has discord-like server functionality and if you really know what youre doing you can even bridge matrix with discord, IRC, and a few other chat services to send and receive messages with people who arent on matrix!

if youre thinking of moving away from discord, i would highly encourage you to give matrix a try, and encourage others to do the same!

aaaand discord "fixed" the automatic mode so it doesn't use the old dark mode if your phone settings are set up that way too, but the new eye-burning one. :) cool cool cool. i can't use mobile anymore and i WISH i was being bitchy or exaggerating but it physically hurts the shit out of my eyes, and i have chronic fatigue so it's not like i can just "use desktop most of the time". stupid evil fucking app i wish i could delete it forever right now tonight LMAO.

and like, because i needed this explained to me too: the reason the darker background without also darkening the text is more likely to hurt people's eyes is because it's higher contrast. and the higher the contrast the more strain it is on the human eye. you know how when you come out of a shady place and into the sun, it hurts? or when you're in a dark room and a light gets turned on? that's because your pupils have to adjust. they open when there's less light and close when there's more. but if there's simultaneously less AND more light (darker and brighter elements) in one place your eyes CAN'T 100% adjust either way. it makes it a) harder to read (maybe this is a me thing but it's SO HARD to read high contrast text/backgrounds), and b) painful, because there's too much light coming into the retinas. and, in fact, high contrast can be WORSE than Just Bright because of the aforementioned "your eyes can't fully adjust either way".

anyway sorry in advance if you're trying to reach me because i literally can't use mobile until and unless they decide to stop being assholes for literally no reason and re-add their normal dark mode to mobile, which is a thing they can literally do for free with 0 effort whatsoever. like. there are so many things in programming that take at least a LITTLE effort to revert, and this is one of the rare exceptions, it is literally the easiest possible thing to readd a color theme that already exists. but unless they do i can only check discord through desktop. and i can spend days at a time unable to sit up and my desk. so. great.

there's aspects of the discord mobile update I like. not many, and it's more the concept and less the specific implementation, but is all outweighed by the entire UX fuckery.

pins are easier to access, but discord swipes left and right to mirror its desktop layout, not this messenger/whatsapp-style tap on the name of the person/channel design, so what does it matter if they added an easy way to get to pins ?

improved context menu when long pressing on messages is a vast improvement, but what does that matter when opening a DM randomly yeets me halfway up our message history ?

I love the new popout for calls (and hey it mirrors the desktop client here !!) but what does that matter when the toolbar (camera, mic, leave etc.) is now a swipe w/ no indication and neither that nor the view selection works consistently ??

I wasn't sold on the desktop design being directly mapped to a phone screen as the best way to handle mobile, but at least it was consistent and matched using discord on desktop. it made sense. they could've done a proper QOL update if they really tried
