Blog Post: Hakyuu Half Point Review
It’s now the start of the second cour of Hakyuu Houshin Engi. New themes are out, soooo...it’s half-point review.
The pacing has gotten more tolerable, but the context is still nonexistent...
To put things in blunt perspective: they’ve taken stuff out that would’ve explained certain scenes that they’re already showcasing, and then they put in things that are basically very minor details that don’t impact the plot.
Yes, you read correctly, there are actually fillers in this already mess of a speed-run recap show...where late story content is forcefully meshed in with mid story.
Let’s bring up an example of some unnecessary cuts. In one of the Juttenkun battles, they cut out the reason why Gyokutei Shinjin didn’t just further destroy Sontenkun’s room more viciously... And that reason was Sengyoku’s existence (---which they later snuck in anyway), since her being held hostage was what prevented Sontenkun from being wiped out immediately... Then there's the whole fiasco with Choukoumei and his sisters. They’ve chosen to included the Sanshimai, but because of a whole missing arc, no one knows who they are or why they’re here, or how, when, and why Venus is in love with Taikoubou. It’s not a major detail, but it just persists in the background as a strange inconsistency. Then...there’s also Tenka’s stomach cut...XD, and Tenka himself thus far has mostly been shafted.
As for the fillers, last week’s recap episode is typically an animation-break for studios at the end of a cour, so it was an expected filler more or less (although we’re getting another break next week possibly due to holiday), but the main contention I want to talk about today is actually Fugen’s screentime.
For Fugen-fans this is great, they get to see more of him than they were originally able to in the previous adaptation, and I don’t think it’s bad that he got some screen time, good for him...
What’s a demerit, is the fact that they treat him as another main focus, thus taking away from the bigger picture; and the primary reason they’re doing this is because Fugen is extremely popular (2nd ranked, actually). So it all feels like another another marketing ploy.
Fugen is a very soft-spoken, pleasing-to-the-eye kind of character. He’s also readily attached to the protagonist, so there’s a lot going for him that might make readers endear to him... But functionally, in a storytelling/story-writing context, he’s a very minor character in Houshin Engi. His role is actually so negligible you could pretty much write him out entirely. The key is to ask “if you take this character out, will anything major in the story be greatly affected?”...The answer to this question in the case of Fugen is “no”.
If you took Fugen out, nothing major would be affected. Taikoubou would still want to separate the human and sennin world, the sennins would still kamikaze, and Taikoubou would still end up sacrificing the sennin world. There also wouldn’t be any major changes in his backstory or future plot...and even in the original novels, the two hardly interacted. His role overall is basically insignificant, but I digress, of course he shouldn’t just be cut off, he’s an inclusive part of this arc. However, the manner in which they’re spotlighting Fugen feels like the studio is pushing hard to make Fugen a major part of the reason, history and the moral virtue as to why Taikoubou progresses the way he does (even going so far as to be in montages)...when in actuality, it’s really not the case.
As I’ve written before, Fugen’s scenes are a reflection of his own personal virtue, they are not a reflection of Taikoubou’s. He’s simply a comrade that had a start with Taikoubou, is there to contrast with, and follows a different path. His death alone was not the only damaging blow to Taikoubou’s emotional state. Effectively speaking, you could make all of Fugen’s lines and roles said by someone else in passing and it would still turn out the same way...but that’s of course, not how things roll in writing Shounen. I’m not saying minor characters are negligible and shouldn’t be written in if they’re superfluous (hell, I really love Bukichi---). They are also yet another method to flesh out minor detail. All I’m saying is that it was superficial to put so much focus on someone who’s not a major part of the story, especially in an already very condensed adaptation (...literally all of what little scenes he has are included). Even taking into account Fugen being an inclusive part of this arc alone, a ton of much needed details got cut out in place of so many of his flashback scenes, some of which had to be repeated on occasion. But maybe I’m beating a dead horse here, as the majority of this adaptation is poorly directed to begin with.
Anyhow...going into the second cour. I’m really hoping they don’t cut away from the Kou family any further (Kou Hiko in particular) leading up to Bunchuu, because Hiko, out of the featured cast, is one of the more essential characters to both the start of the human war and the end of the sennin war.
Well that’s it for this blog entry regarding scene cuts. Tldr; I hope no one takes this as me snapping on Fugen, all I’m saying is: it’s good he’s in, it’s bad he’s hogging so much limelight to the point it’s pushing other stuff out. We don’t need three flashbacks of the same scene...that’s time wasted that could have been put towards something else.

I hated a lot the final of Hakyu Hoshin Engi but the rest of the anime was really good, at least the Sennin War. Maybe in some years we will have a better anime. For now I highly recommend you read the manga, is awesome! :) I hope you like my draw!

Part 9: To the Houshindai!
Are you ready for more character cameos?
If you don’t know what this is about, please refer to this previous post.
[Any new comments by me will be designated by brackets.]
After messing around with the upgrade combos, and I found one for Tenka!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This one upgrades the flame paopei Karyuuhou so they do more damage.
Tumblr media
We still have two places on the map we can go to now... The Houshindai (the dot next to Mount Kongrong 2), and another palace type place. We'll deal with THAT later. For now, let's visit the Houshindai! Hopefully, we may be able to see some familiar faces there...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Inside, the first thing you'll meet is that turtle-like youkai who guards the entrance to the Houshindai. He's basically there just to give you info on how this "dungeon" works.
The Houshindai acts sort of like a "monster tower" in this game... It's a place with a lot of levels and is great for leveling up. Instead of going up, however, this tower goes down. The farther down you go, the harder the monsters/enemies will get.
Like many other tower-like dungeons in other games, you also get rather big rewards by progressing through the levels! You'll see what a mean in a short moment.
Tumblr media
The Houshindai houses many split paths--you'll be faced with split path choice right away. Don’t worry too much about choosing a “correct” pathway. Some paths do converge, and (if I recall correctly) they all eventually lead the same dead end.
Tumblr media
True to the series, there are also these talking trains. (You can talk to them by using the action/talk button on the vending-machine looking sprites.)
They won't be in use until you "unlock" the floor below. Once you unlock the next floor, the trains can be used as a shortcut to get to the lower floors quickly.
I'll only be covering a few floors for now; and I'll only document a bit of the levels you’ll trek through, since all the levels in the Houshindai are essentially the same. Only the floors in-between are different.
Onward!
Going down the right stairway, you're immediately treated to this:
Tumblr media
...Or something similar. All the "levels" in-between floors are randomized, but the goal is the same. If you're going down, you'll start on the red symbols (shown above) and your goal will be these green symbols:
Tumblr media
They act as warp points, essentially. Feel free to take any of the treasure on your way down.
Tumblr media
Some items are hidden in the barrel(?) type things too.
As these levels are randomized, there’s no “cheat” to quickly finding the warp point to the next level. Your best bet is just following the train tracks and seeing where they go (since the two warp points are connected by train tracks). Sometimes you'll get lucky and find the next warp point right next to you--other times, you won't. It all comes down to luck and chance, basically.
Probably the most annoying thing about this "dungeon" is the encounter rate. Since this is a place meant for you to train in, the encounter rate is pretty high.
Tumblr media
The enemies also tend to attack in groups here, which does yield more exp, although they can be a pain if you’re under-leveled. In this playthrough, I completed the first two floors with a party level around 15, and it wasn’t that bad.
Tumblr media
[Once in a while, you’ll also randomly encounter Kokutsuru (I think that’s him--the dark version of Hakutsuru). Anyway, if you see him, try to defeat him. He will give you 1000 exp EVERY TIME, regardless of your level. And he's pretty easy to defeat too. The only problem is that his encounter rate is very low, and he’s fast and usually tends to run from battle.]
There are about 5 "levels" until you unlock the first floor... I think all the floors have 5 levels between them, but it's been a while since I've played so I'm unsure.
You'll always know when you've reached a floor because this screen shows up:
Tumblr media
And the train is now in use!
Tumblr media
Just choose the second option. It's active both ways, meaning you can take it to go down or up quickly. Neat!
Tumblr media
Also, there's a house and more stairs down, hm...
Who lives here, I wonder?
Tumblr media
Hey... It's one of the Juunisen! (Jikou Doujin)
After a short convo between him and Tensho, you'll notice that his house will be empty. Hmm... But more on that later.
Taking the stairs to the left (at the very beginning of the Houshindai) will lead you to another floor/house with another character.
Tumblr media
Another of the Juunisen! This time it’s Kouryuu Shinjin. (I think you can tell where this is going... not all the characters who live in the Houshindai are one of the 12 great senins, though.)
Going back to the first floor on the right (Jikou Doujin’s residence), and taking the rightmost staircase down, we eventually come to another floor which houses...
Tumblr media
Fugen!
Now to head back to Mount Kongrong before we face the palace dungeon.
Long story short, the reason that the senin you talk to in the Houshindai disappear is because... yes, they return to Mount Kongrong. [You can find them all on the 2nd floor of Mount Kongrong. Just head into their rooms to talk to them.]
I guess they just manifested a new body, or something? (It's probably explaned in the game, but since I don't know any Japanese... Yeah.)
Most of the Juunisen will provide bonuses of some sort.
Tumblr media
Jikou Doujin, for example, will let you fight an enemy if you choose the first option when given two choices. It seems to always be the same enemy (a crow-type youkai), and it doesn't give much exp. I assume this is an easily accessible and weak enemy meant for testing out your attacks or something. You get so little exp from the fight that it can't have been meant for leveling up characters.
Tumblr media
Kouryuu Shinjin let's you view a list of all the obtainable characters you have befriended so far. It also shows you their current level. (Even if you don't bring them along in your party, characters will still level up to an extent as you progress through the game.)
Each page only lists four characters. The second to last option let's you see the next page, and the last option let's you quit the screen.
There are... four pages with four characters listed on each page, which means there are a total of 16 unlockable characters in this game.
Oh yes, and Fugen...
Tumblr media
If you talk to him (with an empty space in your team) and choose the second option when given the chance...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He joins your party!
Unfortunately, he only has one attack. He's meant to be more of a support character, like Igo.
Getting back to business, we still have one more new location to check out, but before that, let me talk about Fugen's special ability.
Since Fugen can manupulate atoms using his paopei Taikyokufuin, you can cross water using spots like these:
Tumblr media
Just use the action keys ("a, s, or d" keys) to activate his ability.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fugen’s ability turns these weird blocks into ice, allowing you to cross certain stretches of water! You can get a few treasures by doing this, and such places can be found all around the game map. I'm not going to detail where, (you can find it yourself easily enough), and it's really more of an extra thing, so I'm leaving it up to those of you playing through the game.
Okay, now to finally go to that other palace type place.
Tumblr media
Hmmm, I think this is Chuu Ou's palace... Or it used to be, at least. Now it's just abandoned--
Tumblr media
Hmm?!
Tumblr media
Oh, hi there Soushou. (Don't worry, it's the real one this time)
Looks like he's talking to someon--
Tumblr media
OH GODS IT'S CHOU KOUMEI!
Tumblr media
Being the most show-off-y villain in Houshin Engi, his battle screen is arguably the most pretty and detailed out of all the bosses in the game. [His boss theme BGM is also pretty... amazing.]
There is a cutscene in which Soushou and Chou Koumei fight while Tensho and Tenka watch on. (Soushou and Chou Koumei appear to not have noticed Tensho and his brother yet.)
Chou Koumei tries to pull a first strike on Soushou, to which Soushou counters with this attack:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It is Soushou’s most powerful attack.
After this attack, Tensho gets Soushou's attention, and I think Tenka goes to fight Chou Koumei while Tensho and Soushou try to talk about something.
However, Chou Koumei then goes nuts and does THIS:
Tumblr media
He goes and covers the ENTIRE palace with plant vines.
Tumblr media
Annnnnnd, it's return of Chou Koumei's flower form! ((auuuuugh))
And apparently, he's trapped Tenka, so Tenka gets booted out of your party and Soushou joins in his steed.
How dare he kidnap Tensho's brother! Let's save Tenka!
...In the next chapter.
To be continued...

Houshin Engi Fridays!: Episode 4
Also English dub cast revealed!
I really don’t have much to say about this episode. I just felt this was another decent episode. Not as good as last week’s but decent. We got to see what happened to the lords and Dakki’s saki and blood bath party. I kinda wish they had done that first, not be so jarring. Not to mention Dakki’s gruesome “How to make people burger steak”. It didn’t seem crazy rushed or anything and what said about last week’s episode was pretty much the same in this episode.
So yeah, not much to say this week. I miss Shinkouhyou but I understand he wouldn’t have added anything to this week’s episode. Though it would have been interesting had they made Shinkouhyou be like some sort of keeper of flashbacks, just to be cute. Sorta like what Kero from Cardcaptor Sakura did when he explained what Cardcaptor Sakura was in the Clear Card anime.
Anyway so here are the list of people who are voicing who in the English dub! Click the links to their profile page on Anime News Network!
This series is licensed by Funimation!
J. Michael Tatum as Bunchu Josh Grelle as Taikobo Luke Longacre as Chu Tyler Walker as Supushan Aaron Dismuke as Fugen Shinjin Alexis Tipton as Dakki Brad Hawkins as Koh Hiko  Kyle Igneczi as Shin Kohyo Anthony Bowling as Hakutsuru Charles Campbell as Genshi  Joel McDonald as Kokutenko  Mike McFarland as Kokukirin

Hakyuu Houshin Engi - Official Character Profiles
Tumblr media
Taikoubou Also known as Ryobou. After losing his family when he was a child, he trained under the leader of Konron, Genshi Tenson. Although he is just a doushi due to his innate laziness, he possesses sennin-level skills and was entrusted with the Houshin Project by Genshi Tenson. His external behaviour might give the impression that he is an idiot, but great minds like his are seldom seen, even in Konron.
Suupuushan While at first glance he looks like a hippo, he is a fully-fledged Reijuu. Serving as Taikoubou’s vehicle, he is his good-spirited partner. At first, Suupuu is shocked by Taikoubou’s irresponsibility, but as he gradually learns of his worries and hidden resolve, he comes to respect him and work earnestly for his sake. He is softhearted, and ends his sentences with “-su”.
Nataku He was born already wearing 3 paopei, and is powerful enough to use them simultaneously. No matter the foe, Nataku will face them without fear, but he lacks proper human emotions and will jump into battle with strong enemies without thinking of the consequences.
Youzen The beautiful doushi, who bears the sennin name Seigen Myoudou Shinkun. Although his rank is just doushi, his combat abilities surpass those of Konron’s Juunisen, and is a respected existence even in Konron. He was ordered by Genshi Tension to assist Taikoubou, but... .
Kou Tenka Kou Hiko’s second son; he trained in the Konron Mountains under Seikyo Doutoku Shinkun, and eventually rejoins his father’s party. With a very refreshing personality, he can easily pull those around him at all times. However, under that appearance hides an unimaginable fighting spirit, and his tenacity in battle has no peer. His great talent for martial arts, which he inherited from his father, will certainly be of great help to the Zhou army.
Kou Hiko Eldest son of the Hiko Clan, and its central figure. As Buseiou, he is in charge of the country’s military affairs. A master of boujutsu, he has sennin bones and a large build, making him capable of fierce attacks. His combat abilities won’t lose even to those of a sennin, and he also possesses a strong will. Openhearted. (T/N: There is an extra line, but I can’t translate it properly).
Fugen Shinjin A Juunisen who specializes in physics. Having joined Konron at the same time as Taikoubou, they get along well. He is very knowledgeable, but his constitution looks frail. He is a pacifist who does not like conflict; that said, when using his powerful paopei Taikyokufuin, he possesses considerable battle power.
Dakki A fox sennyo from Kingou Islands, who has used her beauty to deceive successive generations of men in positions of power, and has thus been tormenting the people since the days of the Xia, even before the Yin reign began. While she has amassed tremendous power, having lived for over 1,000 years, her greatest weapon is her incredibly sharp mind. She is now manipulating Chuuou in order to engage in the same brutal acts once again.
Bunchuu: Yin’s Taishi for the past 300 years, he is a doushi whose support of his country extends across many areas, including government and military affairs. He studied at Kingou, and while he is considered one of its Top 3 sennin together with Dakki and Chou Koumei, he has forbidden himself from using his sennin powers while in the human world. Having served under many successive emperors, he thinks of Yin as his own child, and will crush whoever tries to oppose it with his full power.
Outenkun The one who calls the shots among the Juutenkun. He is shrouded in mystery.
Shinkouhyou: The strongest doushi, who wields the strongest paopei, Raikouben, and rides the strongest Reijuu, Kokutenko. While he is living in the imperial palace as Dakki’s guest, he watches over the Yin-Zhou conflict as a mere spectator. Both his origins and intentions are completely unknown. Incidentally, his name is listed at the beginning of the Houshin Project’s list.
