Danmachi Familia Chronicle Episode Lyu 2
Tumblr media
Author: Fujino Omori
Illustrator: Nilitsu
Label: GA Bunko
Release Date: 13 October 2023
My Score: 5/5
This volume is split into 3 short stories with the first one taking up most of the volume (a good 80% or more). This story fills in the blanks of Lyu's reunion with Astrea before the war game in volume 18 and it's really, really good. Seeing Astrea and Lyu reunite in person is fantastic itself but we also get to see Lyu trying to be a senpai to the new members of Astrea Familia. In particular, there's a blacksmith named Cecil who strongly resents Lyu for abandoning Astrea, and her character arc as a foil for Lyu's is a highlight of the short story. This short story was amazing and satisfying and it's one that I would love to see animated in the upcoming Danmachi V anime. It's probably my favourite story in the Familia Chronicle volumes so far.
The other two stories are much shorter and less relevant to the main plot. The second one features a sweet interaction between Ardee and Lyu. The third story features an event from 5 years ago in which Alise, Kaguya, and Lyra discuss Lyu's future. These stories are bittersweet, and while they aren't as good as the main one, they are definitely worth reading. I can see why they were included in the volume.
So with this volume, the 13 months of Danmachi volumes have officially concluded and it's been a blast. While I may not have read all the volumes in the month that they were released in, it's been great to have a steady stream of Danmachi content. There's been some top quality volumes and it's made me appreciate the Danmachi franchise more. All of the authors, illustrators, editors, and everyone else have done an amazing job this past year and I hope that everyone is able to take a well-deserved break now.
Side note: I did finally listen to the drama CD that was bundled with Danmachi 19 and it was pretty good. In it, Bell finds himself in the Dark Period of Orario where the Astrea Familia are fighting against Evilus. He meets the members of Astrea Familia and Ardee, who he gets along well with as a fellow Argonaut stan. He realises that he is in a position to change the fate of the Astrea Familia and Ardee, and has to make decision about what to do. The story was okay. I enjoyed seeing Bell interacting with Alise, Kaguya, and Lyra a lot and there was a good amount of angst and humor in it. The voice actors all did an amazing job at conveying the feelings of the characters with just their voices. It was a good way to spend an hour but I wouldn't call it a must listen.

Battlefield Artemis, Protector of Warriors
Tumblr media
Artemis from DanMachi: Astraea Record volume 3. Written by Omori Fujino and illustrated by Kakage.
“Hunting and the chase are the recreation of Apollo and Artemis, but they are also connected with the goddess [Athena]. For one thing because they are a part of the art of war…”
-Aristides Or. 14:6 (Tr. C.A. Behr; excerpt from Mary Galvin’s BIOΣ APTEMIΣ, p.169)
Artemis’ role in times of war and how she’s favored by soldiers are overlooked in favor the typical “war gods”, like Ares, Athena, and Mithras. While she was not called a “Goddess of War”, Artemis had a prominent role in war.
According to Mary Galvin, Artemis role in war is due to her connection to the life of society. Artemis prepares society for war and from the quote above indicates that there’s an overlap with the hunt and war.
Appeals were made to Artemis prior to war, especially when an enemy threatened the populace.
Historically people greatly believed that Artemis will protect them in times of crisis. The Ephesians had great faith that Artemis protected them danger, such as the legendary conquest of Croesus, who later built the first Artemision.
During the time the Persians controlled Ionia, they left the city of Ephesus and the Artemision mostly intact, despite destroying other cities and their sanctuaries and temples. The Syracusans, after a civil conflict try to keep the peace and decided to took steps to avoid further conflicts and keep a harmonious relationship with Artemis.
Artemis kept women safe from war. The women of Amphipolis gathered in the temple of Artemis Tauropolos and plead to Artemis for her help when their city was under threat.
Artemis also kept soldiers safe when they rest under her watchful eyes near her sanctuaries. Afterall Artemis’ sacred spaces were usually sites of asylum at least from the Archaic age to the late Roman period.
There’s a pre-war sacrifice ritual of pre-battle sacrifices to Artemis, usually with an animal sacrifice. Artemis occasionally give pre-battle epiphanies, she gave them signs or directly appeared to them herself. After a successful battle, the army and/or the society will give thanksgiving to Artemis and sometimes Artemis alongside other gods, typically Athena and/or Apollo, if they’re involved.
Examples of appeals before war and battle:
Antigone called upon Artemis prior to Parthenopaeus’ attack.
Agamemnon dedicated a sanctuary to Artemis at Megara in hopes to have Kalchas to join him in the Trojan war.
The Delphians appealed for help against a barbarian attack.
Before the battle of Marathon, the Athenians appealed to Artemis by promising to sacrifice a goat for each Persian killed.
Post-battle thanksgivings include:
Athens sacrificed numerous goats for their victory at Marathon against the Persians (though not 1:1).
Ephesus frequently honored Artemis each time they’re saved when they're in a pinch.
Alexander the average I mean Great honored Artemis with a sacrificed at Ephesus.
Xerxes the Great honored Artemis Ephesia, on his way back home after unsuccessful campaign in Greece.
Tissaphernes honored Artemis with a sacrificed at Ephesus.
Agesilaos honored Artemis with a sacrificed at Aulis.
The Spartans regularly sacrificed a goat in her honor.
Various memorials were erected around and inside Artemis’ sanctuaries to memorialized and thanking Artemis for her help in their time of need.
Athenians victory over Medes at Salamis memorialized in the temple of Artemis Proseoa.
Theseus’s at Troizen for his victory against the minotaur and his safe passage out of the labyrinth.
Preservation of land of the Cirrhaeans and Cragalidae.
At Euboea is Agamemnon stone ship with his thanksgiving for the passage to Troy.
Themistocles dedicated a shrine as thanks for his victory at Salamis.
Numerous thanksgiving inscriptions from Ephesus, Caria, Skythia, and throughout the ancient word from both Greek and non-Greek people.
Festivals and celebrations were made in Artemis’ honor.
Phokians initiated the Festival of the Elaphabolia at Hyampolis for their success against the Thessalians.
Athens observed on Mounychion 16th a holiday to Artemis in thanks for their success at Salamis.
Delphians initiated a festival for the thanking Apollo, Artemis, and Athena for their epiphanies during the battle against the barbarians and for their aid.
Another way that people thanked Artemis is the dedication of gifts at her sanctuaries and temples.
Garlands by Agesilaos and his soldiers.
Artemis Ephesia was given a tithe from the spoils of war by the Greeks.
Images of war heroes were dedicated to Artemis, such as an image of Adrastus the Lydian was given to Artemis Anaitis, and Artemis Ephesia was given images of various war heroes, including Lysander and prominent Spartans.
Aetolians gave images of Artemis to Delphi after their war with people from Gaul.
Artemis also participated in peace treaties as well. One time in Rome, there was an agreement that was publicly posted in Artemis/Diana’s sanctuary. Governments and political bodies frequently ask for Artemis’ permission to ratify treaties and/or seek her recognition of the treaty.
Overall Artemis was appealed for her help during critical moments before and during battle and her protection from her sanctuaries to the battlefield. Armies called for her help via pre-battle sacrifices and after the conflict, they gave Artemis thanksgiving sacrifices and/or dedications. Before Mithras, Diana was the favorite god for Roman soldiers to pray to.
“May God protect our soldiers"

Title totally not inspired by the Battlefield TV series…

Danmachi 19
Tumblr media
Author: Fujino Omori
Illustrator: Suzuhito Yasuda
Label: GA Bunko
Release Date: 14 September 2023
My Score: 4/5
English Release: Yen-press is currently releasing this series in English under the title of Is it Wrong to try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon?.
Note: this edition of volume 19 came with a drama CD that I still haven't had the time to listen to. I'm not the best with just sitting still and listening to something without having anything to stimulate me visually. Hoping to get around to it soon. It seems like it features the Astrea Familia so it should be fun. Maybe I'll write a review of it when I've finished listening to it if it's really good.
This volume starts off with following up on the events of volume 18. We learn what everyone is up to after the war game, with many of the former Freya Familia members now working at the Hostess of Fertility pub. We also get to see a development that I never thought would happen: Lyuu officially joins Hestia Familia. After reuniting with Astrea, she's ready to move on with her life and Hestia Familia is the place where she wants to be. I seriously didn't expect this but it feels like it's been a long time coming. Lyuu being part of the Hestia Familia just feels right. I am disappointed that there were no level ups after last volume though. I really feel like Lili deserved it. I know the level ups are meant to take a long time to happen but Bell levels up far too quickly compared to the rest of the characters.
The main plot of this volume concerns the arrival of the School Grounds*, a ship for students to study all kinds of subjects, including battle. It returns to Orario once every three years and the familia's send a representative there to recruit new members. Thanks to Hermes being up to his old tricks, Bell ends up enrolling in the school under the name Rapi and disguises himself as a rabbit demi-human to get some more experience. There he meets the student Nina Tulle who, along with sharing the same last name, strongly resembles Eina.
It's been a long time since we've had a one volume arc and this is definitely a good breather volume. The new characters were all charming enough, especially Nina, who gets quite a bit of character development and would be a welcome addition to the main cast if she ends up joining it. Aside from being a good breather, this volume also focuses on Bell and it was nice to see just how much Bell has matured since volume 1. Bell's learnt a lot from his experiences and from his friends, and it's nice to see him use those experiences to help the young students. I loved seeing him take on the supporter role in the party, since fighting would surely reveal his true identity. He's able to reflect on what an amazing job Lili does and being a supporter helps him to form strategies for the Hestia Familia as well. Overall, I thought this was a really good follow-up to volume 18 and a perfect way to let the characters breathe before things will surely get hectic soon.
I still have one volume left to read before I've finished the thirteen months of Danmachi releases and that's the new Familia Chronicle volume featuring Lyuu. I'm really looking forward to reading it soon. I've head a lot of fun reading Danamchi this past year. I hope Fujino Omori and the artists are able to get some well deserved rest now. Also, a season 5 for the anime was announced which is very exciting. I hope it gets a similar treatment to season 4 and is a bit longer due to the length of volume 18. I am really excited to hear all of the voice performances for that arc, especially Minori Inase's.
*the wiki calls it the "School District" but as there is no official English release of the volumes where it features yet and I called it the "School Grounds" in my Sword Oratoria 13 review, this is what I'm sticking with for the sake of consistency.
