ESC 2022 Semifinal 2 recap:

(if you see me reusing my jokes for the final no you didn't) and once again also just a general warning for mean gay bitchy judging ahead, this is my one time a year that im mean it's like lent or smth, you have been warned. if you're not into bitchy shady opinions then uuuhhh i recommend reading something else for your own peace of mind tbh.

skits at esc still are so painful dear god opening: well that's 5 minutes of my life i'm never getting back laura's biceps HELLO???? and this look?? FAB!! the ruffles! the wet hair look!!!! the deep lip!! officially obsessed mika has now decided to be a LEMON realtor popsicle, go off i guess the presenters giving licorice rasperry lemon fantasy. or the flag of germany, i guess? if it's not in the right order don't bother me i can't read the fucking clock correctly it's nothing personnel

Finland - what the fuck is this yellow IT moment?? i either end up super biased for finland or holding them to a higher standard and this time uuuuhh i expected better. also i don't think a song about a toxic woman who clearly isn't good for you is particularly feminist (idk if they claimed it was or if it's just my announcer but???? nor using a kind of degrading word in that context? so that's kinda weird) also i'm curious to see if the board is unhappy with this one bc i heard that they had issues with albania and latvia ( :// ) and while i obviously don't want any numbers punished or censored but i'm expecting an annoying double standard tbh where showing skin and suggestive text is fine if you're a man or doing it through a male perspective, i guess :/

Serbia - i wish i could understand the text so i could know what's happening but i also appreciate the non-english. it seems so interesting and fascinating, generally im confused but interested and intrigued, ART. genuinely so into this

Azerbaijan - i really do like his voice and his beard is very pretty. and i do really like this song tbh, it gets the ballad pass although it's just barely not quite engaging enough for eurovision imo. a fantastic vocal performance tho that sounds genuinely sincere and a good song.

Georgia - i fucking love this, ngl. the looks, the sound, the aesthetic. love how odd it sounds. totally a dnd party vibes. we've got officer druid, punk pirate man, glam goth plague doctor, and steampunk willy wonka. this is a psychadelic mess and i'm living

Malta - ig model? doing a power ballad? groundbreaking. *insert miranda presley*

San Marino - love the cowboy hat moment. the song is absolute ass. i do respect rhyming cowboy with sex toy i suppose. bit hypocritical for me to say this and obvs måneskin doesn't own rock gender fuckery (hello, have you SEEN rock?) and it could just be being yourself and trying to piggyback for that purpose but it feels just. a little too derivative maybe. but like a soft derivative, i don't think it's anything worth making some hubbub about

Australia - okay ART. the met gala could NEVER. it's personal, it's honest, it's art, it's fashion, it's vocals, it's real, it gets a ballad pass any fucking day from me. i'm THROWING ballad passes. legit love it genuinely love everything, it's art, it's fantastic, and i fucking love that the song's about his experiences as an autisic person, bc relate. one of my favs now

Cyprus - okay art reference, go off venus! kinda love it with the stage fountains. obviously not the most over-the-top energetic but i appreciate that, still very full of life and a bop with a more lowkey energy, a whole moment tbh. lovely vocals

Ireland - esc back at it again with the pop a whole decade too dated.

North Macedonia - i legit forgot a number was on

Estonia - i usually say that i'm into folk music but not country because country's sound is just too polished and that won't be changing today

Romania - started with what might be the gayest interpretive cow milking in history, which might not seem as a particularly spectacular achievement but with all the farming in stage musicals, it is fairly impressive. i was going to say that i was into the cutout jumpsuits but the pattern is truly horrendous.

Poland - we have now arrived at my least favourite esc genre, which is man in suit on empty stage with a single spotlight and the singer's moody face agressively imposed in the background. just agressive crooning, endless belting, and high notes. not even being about water can save this song for me, which says a lot because i am a complete sucker for water songs.

Montenegro - poor girl got impaled by an umbrella, no wonder she's in pain

Belgium - i mean it's fine. he's clearly a good singer. i wouldn't be mad if it moved on, but i also don't really care if it doesn't

Sweden - i know it's moving on but i fully cannot stand it. it's trying so hard to be robyn. but no one will ever be robyn.

Czech Republic - i'm not mad at it tbh. like her look and the vaporwave inspired background. slightly less dated than a lot of other eurovision pop, giving kinda 2018. I do appreciate the man with the bow on the electric guitar

the world always needs more Mika, i've been saying this for years. also laura looks stunning it's giving decadent vampire retiring for the evening posed casually on top of a decadent staircase. I do think these kinds of songs might not be what her voice needs though, it's very strong and clear and clearly needs a bit more circumstance and force, unfortunately. Mika is giving the exact same suit but now as a polar bear realtor that fell into a strawberry patch. he really saw that suit on the clearance rack and said yeah i'll take at least three of it, thanks

I Do Not Care about these men in leather suits. a sentence i never thought i would say but here we are, i suppose

Laura serving an even more dimitrescu-esque look i love

Spain - yeah it's a dance song. you can do a lil shimmy. don't super care. for being as energetic as it is it feels weirdly lethargic

UK - well we've got a camp stage, i am stealing his jumpsuit.

Germany - looking forward to another german bottom placement, this is tanking for sure.

my literal reaction to belgium's qualification was 'who the fuck is belgium' LMAOO azerbaijan may not be the most eurovision but it might be one of the actual best songs this year POLAND????? finland?? finland gets a spot but latvia didn't????? RIGGORY.. thamkg god australia made it because i would have rioted ugh serbia is art and im happy to see it here, so deserved!!! very sad about georgia. was kinda expecting it, but i'm still upset. i am def checking out their other stuff after this tho.

For sure rooting for australia this year! <333 This one was less of a tragedy so i won't have too much trouble falling asleep tonight, even if a lot of things moved on that certainly did not catch my attention at all.

I'd been feeling pretty lonely lately, but hopefully things are turning around.

I really blew things with Kay, basically getting her to give me reasons why she doesnt want to talk to me anymore.

After the experience we were talking a lot on yahoo. I couldnt stop thinking about her, thought about her at sch* all the time. We talk very sexual and talk about different sexual positions are. She also shared some deeply personal and dark things with me. She was raped her f* year. And she tells me she feels "screwed up."

I messaged her right asking for a second date.

The next morning I get a message saying, " been doing a lot of thinking ......I dont think we get along so well in the bedroom" "I need time to figure myself out."

After that we start chatting less and less until nothing. When I asked her why we cant just be friends, she says "the conversation feels like work" meaning its awkward having a conversation with me, and she says "tbh I dont find you interesting"

I know we only had the one experience but, l started playing out these fantasies of us being a couple. I dont know why, or what I can do to stop this emotional attachment. I gotta be more detached. I do feel anxious around certain people, and awkward, I need to improve my self esteem and my personality

What else should I learn from this? Where else did I go wrong? I really feel horrible right now.

Last night I went to the kitchen with Ari. I talked to a lot of people and made friends with a couple by trying to find a spot near the dj. I found out they were friends with petunia, who I have a crush on. And she came a little later on in the evening.

Ari and i went to her friend's car to smoke out. I came back in and sort of stared at this crowd of people dancing, moving as of in slow motion with the strobe light. I turned around and there was Petunia. I ended up talking and for awhile, i felt like she was being flirty and happy to see me.

She shared her drink with me, watched my spot when I went to the restroom, smiled a lot and played with her hair and wanted to take a shot with me after the dj was done and before I had to leave. She was gorgeous.

We drifted apart a little and while I was dancing by myself I noticed her dancing by me with her back turned. I got the vibe she wanted me to pull her in to dance with her but I couldn't build up the courage. She did this several times but her friend pulled her in to dance before I could. Eventually l just left because I was getting to stuck in my head and felt embarrassed.

wish I would have gotten her number. She seemed really interested and her friends like me.

But its ok, next time I'm in that situation I'm going to tell myself to get out of my comfort zone and go for it because I'm certain she would have danced with me. Also I could have gotten her number if instead of leaving Over all though I had a great time and met a lot of people at the goth club. The music was great.

I went home and just hung out ari’s place talking for the rest of the night. My sleep schedule must be all messed up because i didn’t get home and get to bed until 8:15 in the morning.

I woke up the next day at 7:30. I felt out of it from too much sleep. I had a boring dinner with *M and her sugar daddy.

Later on chris pick’s me up and we meet up with jorge at flaco’s place. We hung out having some drinks and then flaco puts on a porn and we all take turns jacking off in the bathroom nearby. It was probably the gayest thing we’d ever done. Then i realized they had all been doing coke or something.

At some point in the evening chris gets up and says he’s taking us to *ch. we go and have a pitcher of beer. Same freaky *skl crowd. After that we go to denny’s where i tell chris everything about kay, and he gives me some good advice about the situation. I think. It’s basically don’t be so eager and wait for her to come to you.

So i’ll wait. But i can’t wait forever.

oh man. he gave you hugs all the time – arriving at school, during breaks, everything. everyone thought you two were dating because of how close you were – but turns out... he fell in love with someone instead. it was fun while it lasted; the cuddles during break, the singing sessions in the hallway when you brought your guitar to school, passing notes to each other in class and playing tic tac toe, the gossiping in class and the back and forth memes. it was fun while it lasted, tbh. he hid many things from you as well... but your friendship remained strong. only the friendship.

you laughed at his jokes you thought were funny in english class. the quiet snickers that you failed to stifle because you thought he was the funniest person in the world. you "tagged along" – read: looked through the class window at him – for student council meetings (even though you wasn't in student council) because you thought it was funny. he had a good laugh though. the two of you didn't end up dating, but both of you are still friends until today. you miss the times when you were closer, but appreciative of the memories you had made.

the deskmate, xiao.

the definition of a true enemies to lovers situation. he didn't like you because you were part of a friend group of people he wasn't a fan of, and you didn't like him because he was too standoffish. once you got to know each other better, though... he was actually really sweet. he was a band kid as well. :") the two of you almost ended up dating, but decided against it because of studies. something you regretted, though. he was such a sweet person, always checking up on you, passing you notes during class, not-so-accidentally kicking your chair to get your attention.

the neighbour, diluc.

the nights where you would wake up at 2am and see his room light still on. the times when he used to come over for dinner, and the two of you end up discreetly cuddling on the couch, talking about anything and everything you thought of. he taught you about boys, about genshin, about a lot of things. i remember when he fell asleep against my legs once because of food coma – that was funny, ngl. not so funny when you needed the bathroom, but it was a soft moment nonetheless. you would do anything to experience that euphoric feeling again.

before she figured out she was The Full Gay and thought she might just be bisexual, she attempted to fool around with a guy she’d been on a few mostly-not-terrible dates with. it was real awkward.

ari’s siblings are all high achievers or are otherwise highly skilled in some way. Danny is High Chief, the most popular high chief in generations, Malia has a degree in ancient poetry and always got perfect grades, Kaiden is on his way to owning/running his own restaurant/bakery, and while Brina is only 17, she’s already a skilled artist and most people who see her work know she has a future in painting. it’s hard to not feel a bit inferior next to all of that, and she does.

she of course does have a number of talents herself, including but not limited to how well she knows her way around a fusion engine and her absolutely supernatural people skills, but she has a hard time seeing them

my two cents

on Dean Winchester putting the Bi in Bitch

For one, I have to say that I compare him and Isak from SKAM in one way: the fact that Isak pretended to be straight and had no trouble flirting with girls because (as a Gay) they had no effect on him sexually. It wasn’t until Even that Isak was seriously freaked. Dean is the same way---he has absolutely no trouble with women, and I can’t name a single time he’s been shook except maybe when Pamela kissed him in Heaven lol We all were shook tbh ANYWAY it’s generally men that give him the Shakes

Because of overwhelming evidence, a lot of fans think (for good reason) that he is bisexual, woven into the story (specifically his arc) since season 1.

He’s going to be 40 in a couple years and has yet to admit anything about his sexuality, in a single word or phrase.

Has absolutely zero trouble sleeping with and flirting with women, and becomes visibly flustered only when around a dominant and/or good-looking male, maybe someone he’s got a connection to.

Gunner Lawless, his childhood wrestling hero. Dean has palpitations and holds Gunner’s hand way too long when they meet, his first B&E was because he broke into someone’s house to see a Lawless match ffs; he freaks out like a kid when he thinks he’ll get Gunner’s glove; and when Gunner is thrown to the floor beside Dean, he winks up at Dean and Dean dead ass looks AROUSED for a hot second. ? honestly same

Aaron Bass, a gay man who flirted with him and caused Dean to stumble backward over a chair leg. DEAN WINCHESTER, tripping. He was fine acting his FBI role UNTIL the SECOND Aaron insinuated they had a “connection,” after which he became tongue-tied. A good looking guy like Dean hasn’t been hit on by every gender before, enough to be chill and shrug it off? Get real. His excuse for not taking Aaron up on his ‘offer’ was: “It’s just a—you know... a federal thing.” His reason wasn’t even a legit, valid reason, i.m.o; it was just him (awkwardly) stumbling for an excuse in the moment rather than the obvious “I’m straight, but thanks.” Later refers to Aaron as his ‘gay thing’ to Sam when it’s revealed that Aaron wasn’t actually flirting with Dean.

The Siren, who disguised himself as another FBI agent. I just have to point out that the Siren didn’t know that Dean would offer him his flask in the car. If his persuasion is spread through saliva, how the fuck heck was he supposed to infect Dean if not through a flask they share?? I WONDER. ‘Brother figure’ my ass. Dean is broken, okay, after being raised by John Winchester’s A+ Parenting and simply can’t differentiate between familial and romantic love---unless it’s like as obvious as a literal blood relative---bc his experience of both has always been skewed and short-lived. Simple as that.

Castiel, the angel who gripped Dean tight and raised him from Perdition. I don’t even need to get into this with y’all ffs

The deputy from Yellow Fever. Dean was basically drunk from that poison and dead ass flirted with that guy. In regular old Dean language he said “You’re awesome” and when the deputy smiles and tells Dean the same, albeit a little awkward, Dean smirks like ‘HA bitch yeah I know,’ and reaches to put a hand in his pocket. Is it plausible that he was reaching for his cell phone to get the guy’s digits before Sam dragged him away and cleared his throat pointedly?? Like sorry now’s not the time for flirting, Dean??? MAYBE SO. Or he could’ve been trying to put a hand in his pocket because he would look cool, leaned on one foot and smirking. Either way: NOT STRAIGHT SITUATION. I stg just watch the scene and watch Dean’s smile; he’s… It’s a lot.

DR SEXY?? Are you actually kidding?? This brings up a great point: Dean says he doesn’t like things, only for it to turn around and make it canon fact that he DOES in fact like that thing. Dean dead ass watches a doctor show where the star is a ‘sexy’ doctor, who he knows pretty well considering a flaw in the doc’s costume was how he knew it was Gabriel messing with them—“I swore that a part of what made Doctor Sexy sexy is the fact that he wear cowboy boots.” Dean not only thinks another man is sexually attractive, but admits to CONTEMPLATING what EXACTLY makes that so. And when Sam teases him about it, Dean chocks it up to “guilty pleasure.” ?? And no chick flick moments, when Sam later says that Dean does actually love chick flicks, which Dean confirms.

Traveling to 1944, Dean sees a group of men pass by in suits. Right before this, a group of women pass going the opposite direction. Sam turns on the radio and it’s ‘All Out of Love’; this is after they’ve lost Cas (and the Impala) in season 7. Sam apologizes, possibly because Air Supply is always joked about as the gayest band and that song as the gayest song, and he assumes Dean hates it. Maybe Sam feels bad because the first line that plays is What would you say if I called on you now, and said that I can’t hold on? There's no easy way, it gets harder each day. Who does Dean always ‘call on’? Cas. Sam goes to turn it off and Dean stops him because it’s ‘probably the only thing on,’ but as soon as Sam looks away Dean starts to sing along--he knows the song, and is obviously really into it until Sam glances his way and he stops. Yet another moment in which he pretended not to like something that he actually enjoys, a song by a notoriously ‘gay’ band that talks about feelings.

whats the gayest thing that has ever happened to you?

tbh this is rly hard like. once i kissed my first love goodbye in the snow in february. once cole & i spent all night riding our bikes around toronto & going to the park & kissing at sunrise & it was like the entirety of ribs in a single experience. kara drove like three hours to buy me my favorite beer for christmas. in college one of my friends not even someone i was dating took me as a surprise to see lorde at the filmore. one summer evening in college abbigail & i went to this balcony in berkeley off of an art gallery & we had chardonnay & there was this cool ambient music & it was like we just Understood. like Summers later in a club in toronto i was dancing w abbigail & i said 'i've waited three years to kiss you again' & it was so nice. lil embarrassing bc we then made out like teenagers & i ignored my friends but whatever lol what can u do. once i was walking back to cole's apartment in the first snow of winter in toronto & cole held my hand & asked me if all of this was real & i said yes & cole kissed me & cried sosry to expose everyone but y'all have made my life so gay love u all ✌️️

I Saw Beauty and the Beast

And I have Opinions.

Firstly, I should say that I do have a huge attachment to the original movie. I think it’s a masterpiece, probably Disney’s best work second only to The Lion King. (Even then, it’s a very close second.) I was always going to see this, even if I really didn’t want to, because the original is one of my mom’s favorites and I have a ten year old sister. I’m going to see all of the live action movies; it’s becoming a tradition to go to them with my mom.

What I expect out of these movies, tbh, is Experience First, actually solid movie outside of the nostalgia second. While I think that the 2015 Cinderella was beautiful and great in its general fairy tale loveliness, I don’t feel like it really expanded on the original in any way or bettered the story. The 2016 Jungle Book, conversely, darkened and matured the Disney story and honestly made it more enjoyable for me.

Beauty and the Beast wasn’t going to be as good as the original--nor was it going to improve upon it. I think that acknowledging that you are seeing this movie as a visual spectacle and nostalgia bomb first is REALLY IMPORTANT in terms of enjoying it. I wasn’t going to pay $8 and not enjoy it, you know? I wasn’t gonna be the bitch who sat with people who don’t critique every bit of pop culture and rain on their parade. For people like my mom who are seeing this because it’s a nostalgia bomb... You’re going to love it.

And I kind of did too.

There are things I can critique to death, and they’re valid issues. First and foremost--it’s too early to remake a masterpiece of this nature. It will be too early when The Lion King is remade. Cinderella and The Jungle Book (I don’t count Maleficent as a remake tbh because... it’s a separate animal for me and I dislike it) were working with very old material that is in many ways dated. There wasn’t much story to either of the originals. The original Beauty and the Beast is dated in some aspects that this movie tries to expand on or improve, sometimes for good and sometimes for ill--but it’s still a movie made in 1991. By then, Disney had learned that it needed to expand upon its romances, it needed to add character development, it needed to make an actual story, not just a visual fairy tale. So what the earlier movies missed, Beauty and the Beast already had.

Emma Watson is fine. That’s how I’d put it. She’s not doing anything great performance-wise, we all know her singing voice isn’t there. (I didn’t go here for the singing, tho.) The thing is that she’s pretty much a placeholder. The “feminist Belle” angle is honestly kind of overplayed in the media. Belle does invent a washing machine thing, she doesn’t wear a corset, but for the most part she’s kind of a placeholder character. It’s fine. She’s not MY Belle, but she’s not offensive.

Dan Stevens, I think, made the Beast a bit more his own. He ain’t the Beast I fell in love with in the original, but I still like him a lot. He feels more like an actual prince--snotty and a bit of a literature snob, evidently (the best parts of the romance where when he and Belle sparred over books) and honestly just super Dan Stevens-y. I was like, Cousin Matthew, wtf happened? It worked for me, it worked for my mom, my little sister spent the entire movie going “the beast is BRIT-ISH” so... there was more of a departure here, and I liked it. I like the idea of these movies being more their own thing than trying to replace the original thing, you know?

The side characters were great, imo. I know a lot of people don’t like the CGI--for the Beast, we aren’t where we’re supposed to be yet. I’ll give you that. I got used to it, though. (However, the scenes in which he sang threw me off. “Something There” should have remained sung in their heads, imo.) The servants, I liked. They didn’t look like their 2D counterparts; but the movie was going more for a feeling that they were actually turning into “dead” furniture, which I appreciated. It’s another separation, and if anything, this movie could have done with more separations. That way, I wasn’t comparing it so much. Lumiere was great, Plumette was adorable, Emma Thompson is PER-FUCKING-FECTION DON’T @ ME ON EMMA.

Gaston basically stole the show. We knew this would happen. The Le Fou thing would have been so much more enjoyable if they hadn’t mentioned it? Like, Bill Condon, he’s obviously gay and Tumblr probably would have loved his clear gayness HAD YOU NOT SAID THAT HORRIFIC THING ABOUT “EXCLUSIVELY GAY MOMENT”(S). That wasn’t even the gayest moment of the movie??? Like??? Anyway, I always thought that Le Fou was gay, he just got more character development in this movie. Gaston is what mattered in that plotline anyway. We all walked out of the theater talking about how great Luke Evans was, how fantastic he sounded. My mom isn’t even into musicals and she was going on about how fab Luke Evans was; it was that obvious that he knew exactly what he was doing. I wish his career was bigger.

The Dress. Okay, so the dress Belle wears at the very end >>> the yellow dress. We know this. The yellow dress should have been so much better. But tbh, I don’t blame Emma Watson for that. I know it’s become popular to say that she RUINED THE DRESS ON HER OWN but... If she did have creative control, which I don’t think she did to the extent that people think she did, that’s the fault of Disney. This is a huge movie for them. If they allowed Emma Watson to go over the costume designer’s head, that’s because they let her do it. Anyone could have looked at that dress, said, “Sorry Emma, but that’s not what we’re going for” and told the costume designer to start over. It’s not like we’re dealing with a Movie Star here, it’s Hermione and she’s still rising. With all that being said, I think it looks a lot better in motion. The bodice leaves much to be desired and it could have been much better, but the skirt flows in a really lovely manner. Should it have been better? Yes, but I was pleasantly surprised by its movement.

The bits that really stand out in my mind are things like the opening. Firstly, because Dan Stevens was in a David Bowie getup and I think we were all Very Unsure Of Where Our Vaginas Stood On This. (I was... good with it...) But that was an aesthetic moment that was sumptuous and over the top and its Own Thing. It felt like real 18th century France on crack, and I appreciated it. I just don’t know why THAT was so cool-looking, when the Beast’s transformation was so... lowkey... compared to the original. That was where I felt they could have gone bigger.

Also, could have had Belle and the Beast make out more but that’s just me.

Was it as good as it could have been? No, but I don’t think that was ever possible. You can’t top the original, just like they aren’t going to be able to top the original Lion King. They probably won’t even be able to do Mulan justice, because even though that’s probably not on the level of BatB or TLK, it’s too soon. The film industry hasn’t progressed as much since the 90s as it has since the 50s and 60s. You can’t put a fresh spin on movies that are still, relatively speaking, still fresh. Especially since 2D animation hasn’t progressed much since; visually, there’s definitely an old style to Cinderella and The Jungle Book, but Disney hasn’t released a 2D movie since The Princess and the Frog--and that was after a long break beforehand.

So; I advise you to go in with realistic expectations, acknowledge that this is a movie you enjoy for the visuals and the nostalgia. But also--hold Disney to higher standards. Artistically, it isn’t where it was in its Renaissance of 1989-1999. And it’s never going to get back to that place, or surpass it, unless people hold it to a high standard. These remakes are fun, and I’m going to keep watching them; but I’m acknowledging that for Disney, these are cash cows, not artistic endeavors.

But that doesn’t mean there isn’t something special about seeing it onscreen.
