My favorite underrated part of The Count of Monte Cristo is Villefort getting Danglars future wife pregnant and then the baby being born dead, so he sneakily tries to bury him in the backyard, but hes secretly being stalked by this dude whos sworn vengeance on him for not doing his brother justice. This guy sees Villefort burying something, stabs him and runs off with it. And of course it turns out to be an child who’s not actually dead so the guy tries to raises him but the baby turns out to be like The Worst and he steals a ton of stuff and runs away.

And then somehow the Count uncovers all of this and gets the kid and his adopted father back together, has the kid attempted to marry his half-sister, Eugénie Danglar, go jail and then exposes Villefort by having him pop up in his court and tell the whole story to everyone

Truly an unhinged level of chaos and this is only a ONE plot of like six

something about dantes's love vs villefort's mix of fear and admiration. something about dantes's father treating his son with respect vs noirtier treating his with disdain

(also, something about dantes being forced out of his wedding ceremony with the woman he loves vs villefort choosing to postpone his with a woman he likes)

as i've said before, it's been a hot minute since i've really participated in the fandom (i'd like to remedy that), so some of my views on the characters have changed a bit since i made these? so not all of the song choices are perfect imo anymore... but i am constantly tweaking these playlists so it's whatever.

We’re up to chapter nine in Monte Cristo Daily and I’ve missed something. I understand that Villefort is framing young Dantes for being a Bonapartist but I don’t understand why. I understand that the letter Villefort read and destroyed whose contents Dantes was ignorant of was dangerous to Villefort because it was addressed to Villefort’s Bonapartist father but I don’t understand why Dantes knowing what name it was addressed to (without knowing that was Villefort’s father’s name) makes Dantes so inadvertently dangerous to Villefort that Dantes must be put out of the way. I’m also not quite clear who the letter was from - was it from Napoleon or someone in exile or in cahoots with him, something to do with the One Hundred Days? Is there subtext I’m missing because my grasp of the history of the Napoleonic Age comes pretty much solely from what little I still retain from reading the Hornblower novels forty years ago? Is the reason for Villefort’s panic on account of the destroyed letter’s contents not yet shared with us readers, and we’re all meant to be this confused?
