I think there is a latent amount of misogyny in the star wars fandom that people aren't ready to face lol.
Like there was so much hate for RebelCaptain and Bix x Cassian (MechanicThief? Bixian?) After andor, and we were called homophobic for 'not wanting to ship' the mlm ships, and I'm like???!! First of all multiplies exist, and second of all, complex, dramatic, well written ships also should exist!
And I'm now seeing the same pattern where it's encouraged to ship Din with the men, but not with the women
I think that a lot of fans really need to look within their consumption and see if they're really looking for representation, or for Ken dolls they can experiment with.
DinBo is so fascinating and I really can't wait to see how they develop
oh y'all want me to get spicy. i'm gonna put his under a read more.
i don't even think it's latent. the female characters receive an excessive amount of hatred or are pitted against each other. i've been in fandom spaces a long, long, long time so i know it's sadly nothing new but people have a hard time accepting that not all the misogyny comes from men.
there is no quarter for woman characters like jyn erso and bo-katan. they will never please. especially when they may have possible romantic relationships with the male leads.
i have thoughts on the shipping atmosphere for the mandalorian and it's not positive.
i am very much a ship and let ship person. i prefer to stay in my lane and enjoy what i enjoy. no harm no foul.
but i do find it -- shall we say interesting -- that bo-katan and din have a multiple episode arc where they develop a deeper understanding of each other overcoming their differences from when they first met but is met with the attitude of ew no cooties. it is fine to prefer a more sibling dynamic between the two but some have been really nasty about others shipping it romantically.
i didn't even really ship it at first but it's grown on me over the course of the season. they compliment each other and have a lot of protentional to explore.
it's one thing to not like a ship but i've seen a lot of language that i consider problematic and outright anti behavior of labeling something you don't like with dog whistles of incest, grooming, toxic and disgusting when it's in fact none of those things at all. just say you don't ship it and keep stepping.
like, the most popular din ship over the past two years has been dinluke which is a perfectly acceptable ship but in canon they've exchanged like a handful of words in one scene. it's fanon.
the armorer and bo-katan has become a popular ship which is again built on a few interactions.
but somehow din and bo are terrible, no good and gross.
we don't even have canon sexualities for these characters and headcanons are not canon. hell, i personally see din on the ace spectrum and bo makes sense to me as bi but that's my headcanon.
this is also not dean winchester being based of a bisexual character and fifteen years of evidence of subtext or stiles stilinski's bisexual baiting by jeff davis on teen wolf.
i get the desire for more lgbta+ representation in star wars but a heterosexual relationship existing is not your enemy and if you think it is than you are part of the problem.

People wanna cry and bitch about heteronormativity in fandom, esp w ships and then have the audacity to ship only gay ships that have the characterization of soggy saltines and act as if that is somehow any better

It’s wild to me that there are people (a lot of buddie shippers) who still seem convinced that Buck’s jealousy in 7.04 has to be about Eddie, when literal canon and the showrunner himself have stated that’s not the case? It’s literally a self-esteem issue for Buck and the reason he feels so upset that Tommy and Eddie are hanging out so much is because Eddie gets to hang out with Tommy and Buck doesn’t (and assumes Tommy wouldn’t want to because he gets to hang out with Eddie).
Like I get y’all are not used to just seeing what’s actually there, but come on. It was written to be a misdirect—aka a storytelling tool used to create a revelation moment later on for dramatic purposes—and Tim himself gave a whole interview about it… have your headcanons and fics, but wild that they can’t (or won’t) acknowledge what’s actually there.

Sometimes the holostars subreddit reminds me that the new fans are super not-queer or familiar with queer concepts like complexity of behavior and flexibility of identity.

Asked a player if he was getting his flu shot and he said, "I don't like those shots. I've never had the flu, I'm never gonna get it, I AM IMMORTAL" and ran away before I could say anything else

How is "sex makes you an adult" not a fucked take tho lol. I hope Stede & Ed get to fuck but it's really shitty to equate having sex with becoming a man. Anyways I think Stede is gonna have a bar mitzvah lol
I don't think it's a fucked take at all, really. Because OFMD is all about going against toxic masculinity and the societal expectations of what it means to be a man. There are forces at play in the story that say it's wrong for men to be soft, to be in love, to be intimate with each other, etc etc. Men would be put to death for sodomizing around that time period.
I think the "take" is mostly just a joke anyway, and is more in regards to how suspicious Rhys' eyes were. But if you look at it in the sense of Stede getting to come more into himself, to be soft and confident and kind, and to finally and freely love the man he wants? To openly and happily express his sexuality? His passion? And THAT'S what defines his manhood? I think that's really beautiful, actually!

Wait can I ask why you dislike König? That’s not me trying to start shit— I’m not really well-versed in any of the lore stuff so I’m genuinely curious. I know there’s been issues with people replacing Gaz with him (which is fucked up to the max wth) so is that the reason or is it something else? Like, some people dislike Rudy because we see virtually none of him (heard someone say he’s got the personality of a microwaved paper plate lol).
MICROWAVED PAPER PLATE??? I’ll get to König in a minute but GODDAMN. Did they not take the time to go through the campaign?? Rudy’s personality is so clear to me I could list five traits of his right now. He’s my BOY. But you didn’t ask about him so I digress.
Anyway, the reason I dislike König is indeed due to the fandom’s obsession with him. König is one very tiny part of Modern Warfare and yet he’s one of the most popular characters in this fandom.
I genuinely think, on the part of most fans, that it comes from somewhere very shallow. König wears a mask, is tall, and is good at fighting. But we have no sense of who he is as a person (other than warzone voice lines), no background, no hint of a character arc. The only thing we know about his personality is that he’s got social anxiety, and I’m not even sure that’s canon.
There’s some appeal, of course, that I can understand—a blank slate offers greater creative freedom within the realm of transformative work. It’s just that, excluding a few noteworthy exceptions, I don’t think anyone does anything interesting with König. Most of this fandom is poorly written porn, wildly ooc domestic fantasy, or bad, juvenile kink. Using a blank slate like him in that kind of work is very demonstrative of what is valued most about him, and it isn’t the richness of his character; it’s the fact that he has so little character that people can project whatever they want onto him.
So, lol, that’s why I don’t like König. I think he has far too little substance to get excited about, but fandom, due to its inherent bias toward milquetoast white men, gets excited anyway.

I’ll be real. I find boycotts mind numbingly easy. But a lot of the language people have been using around the current boycott appeals to shame rather than compassion or positive change. I know this is the browbeat people into doing the right thing website, but I know from a lot of personal experience that this approach does not help people or inspire them to change. In fact more often than not, it radicalizes them against this supposed “right thing” because they feel shame and alienation about their habits.
