Twig’s Hamentashen Recipe:
Tumblr media
Yield: approximately 20 cookies
2 eggs
3/4 cup of granulated sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1 tsp vanilla extract
2 pinches of salt
2 1/4 cups of flour (you may need slightly more or less)
Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C)
Beat the eggs with a fork in a large bowl then add everything except the flour. Mix well.
Slowly incorporate the flour a bit at a time (you may need to start using your hands) until the mixture isn’t sticking to your fingers a lot and the dough is workable.
Roll the dough out to about a fourth of an inch thick then cut out the cookies using a 3” round cookie cutter or the lip of a cup, a can, etc.
Transfer to a tray then fill with 1 tsp of filling. If you add too much it will leak out so be careful!
Fold your hamentachen into a triangle however you prefer. I usually pinch them since I find it keeps the fillings in better.
Bake for 15-20 minutes until the tips are slightly golden.
Filling ideas: canned pie fillings if you want something quick, Nutella, chocolate chip cookie dough cheesecake, caramel (my favorite), birthday cake cheesecake, strawberry jam, peach preserves, brownie batter (used less than one tsp since it expands), marshmallow fluff with chocolate chips (also less than 1tsp), etc!
Add sprinkles, coca powder, or mini chocolate chips, spices, etc. to your dough for extra fun!

People. Purim is coming in just over a week. You NEED to make these hamentaschen. Mom & I are baking these and 1-2 other flavors tomorrow; we've made these every year since we started baking hamentaschen together in like 2018. (Skipped 2020 because plague, but other than that...) Our friends look forward to receiving them. We love them. MAKE THEM.
YES, you can make these pareve!!! That's how we do them all the time, cuz my body doesn't do dairy! Instead of Nutella, use Israeli chocolate spread or an equivalent thereof for the filling, and use pareve/vegan white chocolate, available on Amazon if not in a local store.

Recipe links for Purim, March 6, 2023
With the Purim holiday coming up, here's some articles for the occasion. For example, the Jerusalem Post provides recipes for Fava beans and challah for the holiday.
The Times-Picayune in New Orleans has recipes for hamantachens, along with the history of how things began in ancient Persia.
The Los Angeles Daily News has more about hamantaschens, along with black eyed pea soup and pasta.
And that should do for now. Have a happy Purim holiday, everyone.

Note
I’m a sweet hamentashen lover, apricot is my favorite, but not apricot jelly, my mom makes a filling using dried apricots that I absolutely love
But I have tried savory hamentashen before and they were pretty good, my mom made hamentashen filled with pulled brisket and bought pre-made dough because her usual recipe was too sweet to make savory, I liked them although not as much as sweet!
Ok wait how dare you. I want to try brisket hamentashen now. How dare you make me crave savory hamentashen.
(That's so cool though!!!!!)

A chocolate lover’s recipe for the classic Jewish cookie.
Love Sabra (the Israeli liqueur that tastes like chocolate and orange)? Then this is the hamantaschen for you. Chocolate lovers will love the rich chocolaty dough filled with orange marmalade. These hamentashen are little chocolate-citrus pleasures.
Prep time: 30 minutes Cook time: 12 minutes Serves: makes 3 1/2 dozen 3" cookies
INGREDIENTS
3 ¼ cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 ½ cups cocoa powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
¾ cup oil
1 cup white granulated sugar
3 eggs
¼ cup orange juice
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 teaspoon orange extract or liquor
Orange Marmalade for filling
PREPARATION
Combine sifted flour, cocoa powder and baking powder in a medium bowl and set aside.
In a mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, blend oil, sugar, and salt starting on low speed, gradually increase speed to high, until creamed. Add eggs one at a time and continue beating until well blended. Reduce speed to low. Add a little bit of the flour to thicken the mixture. Add orange juice slowly, alternating with the rest of the flour and cocoa powder. Add vanilla and orange extract and beat until well combined.
Cover with plastic and refrigerate for at least one hour until firm.
Preheat oven to 375°. Line 2 large sheet pans with parchment paper.
When dough is firm enough to work with, remove from refrigerator on a well floured surface roll out until dough is about ⅛-inch thick. Cut out the dough with a 3-inch round cookie cutter.
Place rounds on prepared sheet pan. Spoon about a tablespoon orange marmalade into the center of the rounds. Fold the dough around the cup to make a triangular shape. You can brush the inside edge of the dough with light egg wash if you want to help keep the sides sticking.
Bake for 10-12 minutes, turning half way through baking.

The way sibling competition showed up in my family is so funny because it was non-existent in school for reasons I won't get into but I sent cookies to a bunch of people this year and last year for Purim, one kind each year but this year was hamentashen with two kinds of filling
My sister and her boyfriend who are both underemployed sent people 5 different kinds of cookies, all with custom recipes so even the simplest to make, the soft gingerbread cookies that you can just scoop onto the baking sheet and pop in the oven, is v fancy. And it only gets more complicated from there
Chocolate crinkle cookies have to be individually rolled into balls and then rolled in powdered sugar
Another cookie that I don't remember her description of it but it's a mound cookie that is individually frosted after baking
Moose and Jewish star cookies that have to be individually cut out and frosted and have sprinkles pressed into them afterwards
And dinosaur skeleton cookies that have to be individually stamped and cut out and frosted
No one's gonna say to her it's obvious she's in competition with me but we all know it 🙄
Fortunately we have different strategies wrt making cookies, she's a maximalist, if you couldn't tell, and I'm a cookie min+maxer. I want to minimize the amount of work I do while maximizing the amount of cookies I make and the happiness of my loved ones, so that prevents me from sending more than one type of cookie to each person and from doing post-processing of cookies like adding frosting or making sandwich cookies
But I could if I wanted to

Recipe: Poppy Seed Hamantaschen

Text
My roommate's going grocery shopping and she's gonna pick me up ingredients for hamentashen!! :D
Last year I made homemade orange jam for the filling and it was amazing. This year I want to make poppy seed hamentashen. I've never made homemade poppy seed filling before and all I have to process the seeds is blender so I don't know if it will turn out good, but I really want to try.
I'm also making the orange jam again. If the poppy seed filling turns out to be a flop I can use that as an emergency backup. If not I'll have orange jam to put on stuff like toast. :)
(Also I'm gonna experiment with the cookie dough recipe. The one I found last year makes the tastiest hamentashen I've ever tried but I like experimenting. So this year instead of using orange zest I'm gonna use orange flower water.)
Edit: Oh! And this time I'm adding cardamom to the orange jam!

There are good ashkenazi recipes and there are “this was probably really exciting back in the shtetl but our dessert technology has progressed” recipes. Blintz is in the first category. Hamentashen falls in the latter category. Do not @ me.
