how do you make chainmail as a hobby in the 21st century, sincerely a bored wannabe medievalist who’s been lurking on your blog since the beginning of your pentiment phase
It depends somewhat on what you want to make!
I've found various articles from The Art of Making Things useful for starting out, particularly the ones on the different types of metal and different weave patterns you can use, as well as their basic "getting started" article. I decided to go with European 4-in-1 style mail for my first project, since it's a good beginner weave and Dungeon Meshi is largely European fantasy-inspired, which also helped me determine the general size my rings ought to be since different sizes and thicknesses are better for different weaves.
I ultimately ordered 16 gauge galvanized steel rings with an inner diameter of 5/16" from The Ring Lord for my Laios armor, because it felt like a good material for my budget and the aesthetic I'm going for, and I did enough research to determine that was about the right size/aspect ratio for my project. But you can also order wire and cut your own rings if you're not as pressed for time.
Since I'm basically making the bottom part of a mail shirt (for now -- I'd eventually like to turn it into a whole shirt, which will take more patterning and planning) it's a fairly simple, modular project. You basically just add more rings or chains of rings to your base until it's the size you want. The 4-1 in the name of the weave I'm using comes from the fact that the basic way you link chains is to join together four closed rings with an open ring in the middle, then close the open ring to fasten them all. On the recommendation of the guy from the SCA who gave me a quick lesson the other day, I've been using two pairs of slip-joint pliers to manipulate the ends of the rings in order to open or close them, which has been working great!
It gets a little more complicated if you're making something with any curvature, like a mail hood, since you have to do reductions to get the shape right (making chainmail, it turns out, is weirdly like knitting), but it's really not too difficult or even too expensive a hobby to start -- just time-consuming, but I've been enjoying it so far.

I’m gonna say something that’s probably not going to be well received in certain circles so let me start by saying this: I believe, with only a few rare exceptions, that you should be able to ship whatever speaks to you the most. And just because I don’t ship something doesn’t mean it’s wrong for anyone else to ship it, and the same for things I do ship, no one else has to ship it too. Who you do or don’t ship will never be a reason I pass judgment on you, ever. Live your best life.
That being said, I want to talk about Horikoshi and straight ships.
(And bakudeku.)
Here’s the thing: Hori has written straight ships into MHA and he’s done it so masterfully that it’s made me ship them without even realizing it. I don’t know if we can call them canon because as far as I know no ship is actually canon yet, but what is canon is the care Hori put into building these relationships.
Kirimina. Hori wrote in a backstory that parallels bkdk that I just adore. There is something about Kiri looking up to Mina and being so inspired by her bravery that it shapes the hero he becomes that is such good content. They’ve had multiple mid-battle moments of protecting and helping each other. I ship Kirimina so hard because of the canon Hori gave us.
I am a low key Denki/Hitoshi shipper but season six kinda hit me in the face with whatever we’re calling Kyouka/Denki these days and now I guess I’m a multi-shipper???? That is how hard Hori hit me with the Kyouka/Denki feels. And he did it the same way as Kirimina, because we have years of content of Kyouka teasing Denki mercilessly, plus the cultural festival band, so when they’re separated in Season 6 and Denki has this intense moment of realization that she’s who he needs to be brave for and it actually works??? I’m a goner.
Heck, I ship todomomo too you guys though I can’t blame Hori for that one, that’s just me being me. The point is that I ship it because the characters Hori gave me struck a chord inside.
But there is one straight ship Hori never once made me ship.
Every time izu*cha showed up I just kinda endured it? It just wasn’t for me. I didn’t see two kids with chemistry, I saw two kids who didn’t know who they were or what they wanted fumbling their way through a will they/won’t they without either of them seeming all that invested in it.
In six seasons and nearly 400 chapters and multiple times revisiting the story I have never once felt any inclination to ship izu*cha
Hori can write straight ships. Hori made me ship his secondary straight ships nearly effortlessly. So if izu*cha was meant to be canon why have I never once felt the chemistry?
You know who has the chemistry? Bakudeku. But here’s the thing: I wasn’t thinking about Katsuki as a possible love interest for Izuku the first time I watched the entire story. I honestly wasn’t paying much attention to him at all, he was everything I didn’t like on the surface so I more or less ignored him despite Izuku holding onto him for dear life. Katsuki never once colored my opinion of izu*cha, they did that all on their own.
It wasn’t until after my first watch through, when I was hungry for more and trolling around tumblr, that I realized people shipped Katsuki and Izuku and it was literally like something out of alignment popped into place in my head.
Oh. Duh. That’s the ship.
I went from zero to a million in a handful of seconds because the chemistry was there, the backstory was there, and boy are Izuku and Katsuki loud about how obsessed they are with each other. Just like Kirimina, just like Denki and Kyouka, Hori planted the seeds throughout the entire series so that when it was brought to my attention everything about the narrative and character development supported it.
And I have to take a moment to explain my dislike of Katsuki at first: I honestly fell for the surface-level interpretation of his character and then kinda wrote him off without much more thought. Which is insane to think about because you can’t really understand MHA without Katsuki, he is so integral to the story as a whole that any version of it without him is skewed so far out of alignment that it’s not even the same story anymore. But I just saw angry boy who yells for no reason and put Katsuki in a box and left it at that.
It wasn’t until I was willing to give his character a second look that I started understanding him, and more importantly, his relationship with Izuku. And it helped that when bkdk was presented to me as a ship that my brain understood immediately why it worked. The canon source material supports bkdk at every possible moment.
I really don’t think it does the same for izu*cha.

Im not aure if you're still active, it's fine if you're not, but I'm still upset makorra didn't happen. They had so many cinematic cues it's upsetting. Sincerely, someone who recently rewatched LOK.
Hi hi! I'm not super active on this blog anymore, but every once in a blue moon I'll reblog stuff lol.
I'm also still sad about makorra ;_; the setup was there and everything, it's honestly confusing and frustrating just from a cinematic standpoint.
I've been cooking an LOK rewrite in my brain for a long time, and maybe one day I'll post it, haha. There's so many things in the series that I wasn't satisfied with, so I think it could be a fun project (not that I'm a professional or anything haha).
Thanks for the message! (Your avatar is very cute btw!)

Well hi!
I'm either remaking or revamping, not sure which yet. But I'm in general doing an overhaul of the blogs I want to keep and deleting those I'm done with for now - or the characters I only am writing specifically on discord.
I hope everyone has been well and staying safe. <3

Thinking about the Ghost!Steph AU again (which I am still determined to actually write at some point, when I've had a chance to do the hefty amount of rereading and note-taking necessary) and Steph's reaction to Jason's big plan to go beat up the current Robin to make a Point.
And on the one hand laughing in his face and pointing out that she got actually killed by an actual villain instead of just beaten up by a theater nerd with guns and it didn't seem to make much difference to Batman, so good luck with that, bud.
(And on the other hand thinking that maybe it would be different if it's Tim instead of her. Batman might actually give a shit then.)

there aren't enough noona scenarios out there for enha and i think it's a really underutilized trope. i have had several thoughts about this, let me show you some examples:
jay
"you know that's how you get mono, right?" you say from your position on the couch at the party, phone in hand and not even looking at them. jake looks objectively horrified while heeseung turns to you slowly, jay shrugging as he blows smoke.
"noona said it, not me," sunoo offers, sitting next to you, his feet in your lap.
"that's not even true," jay says, holding the roach between his finger and thumb. it's such a stoner habit you know it's not worth it to try and stop him.
"of course it is," you say. you knock sunoo's feet out of your lap to stand, stretching your arms above your head. your shirt lifts up revealing your stomach and you watch as jay looks away, a light blush on his cheeks. "you know mono is called the kissing disease. it's spread through saliva, stupid. i had a group of friends get mono from sharing a vape once." you drop your arms and slide your phone into you back pocket. "have fun getting sick. i have a class to assist in the morning." you don't need to look back to know jay is still staring at you. there's a reason you wore these jeans.
heeseung
"heeseungie," you coo and he visibly startles. he's so easy to play with given that he's so much younger than you. he turns to you, eyes wide in surprise. you rest your hand on his and notice the way his eyes dart down to look. he's been staring at your hands ever since you painted your nails black. "come help noona stock the mugs?" you asks, batting your lashes and tapping the back of his hand with your fingertip.
"i thought you said you'd do it yourself," he says, turning back to folding the shirts. it's less fun when he finds a reason to say no.
"they're too high," you tell him, turning to lean back against the shirt display, fingers curled over the edge of the shelf. "you're taller and stronger than me," you insist. he glances at you from the corner of his eye. you turn back around, smiling cutely. "please," you coo and he puts the shirt in his hands down.
"okay," he says and you grin.
jake
"sunbaenim," jake greets you in the hallway. you stop, putting your hand on his arm. he freezes in place.
"i told you you can just call me noona," you tell him. he's still frozen in place and you turn towards him, crossing your arms across your chest. he looks away, awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. "we work together and we have the same position. you don't have to be so formal with me," you explain, trying to catch his eye.
"just... trying to be respectful," he says and you roll your eyes. jake started at the company in finance a month ago but you've been here for about a year now in marketing. you're older but you're at the same level, you've been insisting that since you met two weeks ago.
"then respect my wishes and call me noona," you say and he looks at you in alarm. "we're coworkers, jake. don't let needless formality get in the way of our relationship, okay?" you rest your hand on his arm and he nods stiffly.
"okay... noona."

do your sims have their own personal social media accounts? are they private for only close friends or are they public?
this is such a fun question ! the short answer is that they do indeed have personal social media accounts. all of the working royals have public accounts, and they can have private ones unless otherwise prohibited. long answer is an essay entitled "Social Media, Celebrity Culture, and Royal Relevance in Contemporary Uspana" :^)
kidding, but it is a wall of text:
social media is not really a subset of public relations for the royal family—like, it is, but it's also its own entity. there are certainly public accounts that are maintained principally by employees of the crown, but my sense is that they would've had an entire strategic plan for Influencing™ in the early 2010s when it was solidifying as a concept. the crown, as a governmental institution, has had its own approach to social media since perhaps 2006-2008 primarily concerned with policy communication and public engagement. the royal family, as a sort of related cultural apparatus, attends to the popular interests of performance and spectacle—different kinds of persuasion.
this makes sense in the broader context of beatriz's personal vision of how their family remains relevant: she had already made the decision to lean hard into the wave of celebrity and entertainment journalism that came to shape, then define, the 1990s and 2000s. part of it was her willingness to engage with outlets less deferential to the crown—whether as an appreciator of tabloid gossip's function in society or as a private participant in the kind of combative exchanges that maintain popular public interest. part of it was having the foresight to exploit the adventures and popularity of her many grandchildren: there are ten of them, and they all came of age in the 1990s and 2000s; they all appealed to different swaths of the public; and they surrounded themselves with other interesting figures who'd be in the news with or without the royal association. entertainment becomes a public service, alongside but separate from the royal family's substantive patronage system.
in short, beatriz has been a real "all publicity is good publicity" kind of person, and that has shaped both the crown's official strategies and the family's approach to self-presentation. the latter has been thoroughly central to celebrity culture for some time and that has included appropriating social media for their own purposes. social media allows a new level of control for people who had previously been subject to processes controlled by newspaper and magazine editors, television producers, and a cadre of popular bloggers. with the advent and maturity of social media, the celebrity mystique seems to be a relic of the past, but parasocial interactions have taken on a new, powerful shape. the active use of social media by the family, then, is a way to compete with mediated press coverage and maintain their place in the broader national celebrity culture.
while beatriz herself does not maintain any private accounts or have much interest in participating in the management of her public one, it is essentially imperative that the family's working royals have public accounts with regular, personalized posts. they have staff for this who are separate from staff working on other forms of communications. the actual shape of these public accounts depends on the person. take barbie, for example: the social media mandate, for her, is fully a call to influence. her public account is personal the way lifestyle accounts tend to be; she's presenting her life, her marriage, and her children in a manner that is, not attainable, but unprecedentedly accessible. as another example, i imagine arnaut's social media presence is sort of like barack obama's has been. he and his team make statement posts about issues and current events, and he also releases reading lists and year-end playlists and things like that. leonor's posts tend to be polished, professional, and work-related, but she also posts videos of herself discussing events while she's getting ready for them.
the question of private personal accounts is interesting ... i imagine the younger members of the family do have them, although that raises the question of whether they're being monitored and moderated to prevent or manage leaks, etc. at the same time, they have such broad latitude with their public accounts that i don't imagine they'd need private accounts to post the kinds of content most people put on instagram and such. in theory, i feel like there's an approval process that means adults have to consent to having their accounts monitored and, for minors, puts the monitoring responsibility on their parents. julian, for example, has private personal accounts he uses exclusively to keep up with what his son is posting. obviously the teens would all have private snapchat accounts, but why would you make a finsta for fucking around if you're contractually obligated to have your dad follow it ksdjfhsg
i don't think i've really posted any social media content, except for the barbie and german ones that i decided to frame as instagram stories, but ... this is what's happening in the background. i mean, obviously, since the story proper is still in the 1930s when mass media is still in its infancy. i do want to depict the early roots of this in the leonor-centric spinoff which, as we know, is set in the 1990s. she's the test case for the type of attention that becomes trained on her younger cousins, and all of their children are the digital native zoomer generation grappling with what comes next for technology and celebrity in society. exciting stuff.
