the hawkheaded parrot, also known as the red-fan parrot, is a medium-sized parrot native to the amazon rainforest. these unusual parrots are named for the red and blue ‘fan’ of feathers that are raised when the birds feel threatened or excited. while these birds are available as pets, they are rarely kept as they tend to be temperamental and strong-willed.

This is Watson the Hawkhead. As you can see, he is a very nakey boy. I am his third home. He was a rehome from Craigslist and had a previous home before that where his life wasn't the best. He came to his second home plucked and thankfully, has not plucked since. That was a while ago and obviously his follicles are damaged to the point of most likely never growing back. He is a pretty happy guy though. Shy, but happy. He eats anything, so he easily changed his diet to a more varied and fresh/healthy one. He loves to just have someone in the same room as him to click and whistle with. Not too interested in toys, no matter the variety, but I've seen a bit of progress from him. He is very much scared of hands and if he sees you reaching towards the cage door, he will instantly start to panic. Not sure what his past in his first home was like to cause this (his second home was fine). I really hope he wasn't abused. After 3 weeks of owning him and working with him, I was able to get him out if the cage and handle him. I handle him every day now and I've made so much progress with him. He is so sweet and VERY gentle, which for the usually hotheaded temperaments of Hawkheads, was incredibly surprising! He loves to look up at you and reach in for a kiss. He is a cutey. Just wanted to share him with ya'll.

top 5 parrots?
Ooh, this is tough. I’m going to disqualify the kakapo on basis of already having been featured in a top 5. 1. Palm Cockatoo. I like a bird with a sense of rhythm. Cockatoos seem to be very good at that in general, but palms are percussionists. They pick out a stick and then use it to drum against a hollow tree to impress a mate. And their greeting call to one another sounds like they’re saying “herro!” Also, that spikey crest and their two-toned tongue are some really striking features.
Tumblr media
2. Kea. I love terrible menace birds. Kea are currently infamous for their habit of vandalizing cars in the New Zealand mountains, ripping up the rubber window frames and windshield wipers. But they are also known for attacking livestock, specifically sheep, and they also use their strong beaks to dig into shearwater burrows and prey on the chicks inside. Not what you usually expect when you think of parrots.
Tumblr media
3. Red Fan Parrot. Also known as the hawkheaded parrot. These guys have some extreme style, and get the “red fan” name from having a crest that’s more like a frill around their neck of blue-banded red feathers. They’re colorful and they have some seriously standout aesthetics.
Tumblr media
4. Dusky Lory. This is another case of aesthetics. It’s like they looked at how popular green was in most parrots and said “nah.” Lovely Halloween colors is the result. Also, lories are hilarious in general. I have a fondness for colorful nectar-eaters with bold personalities.
Tumblr media
5. Carolina Parakeet. The fact that the land that’s now the United States once had its own native parrot that lived there in huge flocks from New York to the Gulf Coast and all the way west to Colorado is just quietly awe-inspiring but also deeply bittersweet to me. It was so very common that there was barely any measured research done on it, and as a result we don’t have a lot of data to examine in the almost-100 years since the death of the last known bird in captivity. It was most definitely an extinction due to white settlers, combining factors like deforestation, competition with other introduced species for nesting holes, capture for the pet trade, and their habit of staying close to a downed companion which made it easy for entire flocks to be killed or captured. Possibly a disease was also involved, because their decline from impressive flocks to extinction was within the matter of decades. We just don’t know for sure what really did it, but it’s appropriate to say that the reason is “colonialism.” To me they’re an important reminder to appreciate what we have, both in a conservation sense and in a personal sense.

Birds For Purchase - Things to Consider When Seeking For Birds For Purchase
More and more folks are seeking birds on the market each day but it's never as simple as you believe to locate birds on the umbrella cockatoo for sale on the large street any more. Plenty of your pet stores have shut down and the few which are still about don't inventory any birds for sale. For this reason a growing number of people looking at the Internet daily searching for Birds for Sale.
There are always a large amount of people that are selling their birds online and it is also very possible to follow a bird. The enormous number of birds accessible is substantial and it's so easy to change your mind. Have a look at the various birds below that are available to pick from to help keep in your house: Blue and Gold Macaws, Orange Throated Macaws, Green Winged Macaws, Hyacinth Macaws, Military Macaws, Red-Fronted Macaws,Scarlet Macaws Orange Fronted, Double Orange Mind, Lillac Top, Lime Side, Panama, Red Lored, Specticled, Orange Top, Yellow Shoulder
Bare Eyed, Citron Crested, Goffin's, Moluccan, Palm Cockatoo, Rose Breasted, Sulfur Crested. Caiques, Eclectus, Hawkhead Parrots , Lories, Pied Crows, Pionus, Quakers. Did you've any idea that you might choose from this type of vast selection of birds ? All these birds are of different colors. Some of them are very wonderful and would become an ornamental bit in your house.
If you like the green little beast with that red beak and wish to take the drop to get one you will have to find a local breeder. Parrots born in captivity are created in the spring and summer season and frequently that's it for the year. And some birds , specially the larger Macaws and Cockatoos stay with their parents and are given in nature. This happens for pretty much per year or until their parents have still another clutch of babies.
So just in case you strategy to get a parrot , macaws or cockatoos, you must be patient. An effective way to create a disappointed bird is always to force their weaning process. The persistence that you keep in your weaning process will provide you with the sweetest nature in your newly weaned parrot and a healthier bird that has been fed as directly while the bird would have been obviously if it absolutely was still using its parents.
If you intend to have the very best and want to possess an unique bird , you can always do this but you need to keep two things in mind so that you do not eliminate your new bird. After getting the bird home, it might look pretty but that you don't rather feel like he or she has everything a good birdie might need.

the bird of the day is: the hawk-headed parrot!
Tumblr media
native to south america, the hawk-headed parrot is regarded as a beautiful but mysterious parrot. these parrots are reclusive, and little research has been done on them in the wild. also known as the red-fan parrot, these birds are unique; their body shape does not line up with most parrots. their hawklike head, tail shape, and build is reminiscent of a bird of prey, earning them their name. hawk-heads have a red crest, which scientists presume are used to make them appear bigger.
Tumblr media
hawk-headed parrots nest in tree cavities and stumps. babies stay in the nest for around ten weeks before leaving. only two wild nests have been studied, and both contained one egg. the parrots live in small flocks of 3 to 5 - it’s possible larger flocks exist, but they have yet to be observed. these parrots are extremely territorial and are very defensive of their nesting sites.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hawk-headed parrots are known as a tricky parrot to keep in captivity. they are temperamental and are known to suffer from mood swings when they are hormonal more so than other parrots. this can lead to them being labeled ‘bitey’ or ‘aggressive’. in addition, they are rough with their play, which can sometimes be misinterpreted as intentionally harming someone. these qualities make them best for an experienced bird owner. while their popularity has grown in recent years, they aren’t one of the most common pet parrots. they regularly fetch prices around $1,200 - $1,800, putting them out of many’s price range.
Tumblr media
the hawk-headed parrot is currently labeled least concern - something that is sadly unusual for many parrots. let’s hope the hawk-headed parrot and the other parrots of south america are around for many future generations!
