Got some alcohol markers on holiday the other week, did some doodles :)
Just some potential player characters:
Gatherer is a Warforged druid who was specifically designed to travel and store information on various types of fauna. They left their creator some time ago, but their memory is foggy and they don't entirely remember why, other than they were unhappy. Gatherer learned to connect with nature while out in the wild, and uses their knowledge on plants to their advantage.
Arkle Mudge is a humble little Hengeyokai, who lives in a cosy woodland village and runs a potions shop - every morning he goes out to gather herbs and ingredients, and opens the shop, where he's brewing and bottling draughts all day, so he can provide for his wife and 6 hoglets.
The last character is one that I've posted before; she's in opposition with the Haathtet dynasty, although why I'm not sure yet.

Hengeyokai, A Player Race
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Art Taken from the 4th Edition Wiki]
Transcription:
Hengeyokai Traits
Hengeyokai are a race of intelligent, shapeshifting animals that can freely assume human form or a bipedal hybrid form; numerous subraces exist, each corresponding to a different category of common animal. They are the descendants of humans and shapeshifting animal spirits, and as such they have a strong connection to both the spirit and mortal worlds. Their animal spirit lineage determines what specific beast they take the form of.
Ability Score Increase. Increase your Dexterity score by 2.
Languages. You can speak, read, and write Common and one other language.
Life Span. Hengeyokai can live for over 200 years, but for the first century they exist only as animals and cannot assume another form. Once they reach 100 years of age, they can assume hybrid and human forms.
Size. You are Medium or Small. You choose the size when you select this race.
Speed. Your walking speed is 30 feet.
Language of Beasts. Hengeyokai in animal or hybrid form can communicate simple commands and concepts to beasts and fey spirits with the same form or a closely related form, for example, dogs to wolves.
Shapechanger.  As an action, you alter your physical form to appear as a beast, as a unique humanoid, or a hybrid. While you have the form of a beast, you are unable to make attacks, benefit from shields or armor, or cast spells. You choose whether your equipment falls to the ground in your space, merges into your new form, or is worn by it. You stay in the new form until you use an action to revert to your true form or until you die. Your beast and hybrid forms are determined by your subrace.
Subraces:
Avian: Members of this subrace are the descendants of winged animal spirits, most often birds. Born into a life with an affinity for air, they can change their form to take into the sky. It is common for them to stick together in flocks, both for protection and to share their findings amongst themselves.
Ability Score Increase. Increase your Wisdom score by 1.
Eyes in the Sky. You have proficiency in the Perception skill.
Feathered Form. When you use your Shapechanger trait to turn into a beast or hybrid, you have a flying speed of 30 feet; your hybrid form loses this benefit if you are wearing medium or heavy armor. When you use your Shapechanger trait to change into a beast, your size is small.
Flyby. While you have the form of a beast, you do not provoke opportunity attacks when you fly out of an enemy’s reach.
Aquan: Members of this subrace find home in bodies of water, as they are descendants of aquatic animal spirits. With the ability to traverse both land and water, they have amassed great knowledge of the natural world. Some Aquan Hengeyokai choose to use their knowledge amicably and thrive in social settings where they can share the information they know, while others might use it to hone in on their tactics to hunt other beings down.
Ability Score Increase. Increase your Intelligence score by 1.
Sea of Knowledge. You have proficiency in the Nature skill.
Aquatic Form. When you use your Shapechanger trait to turn into a beast or hybrid, you have a swimming speed of 30 feet. When you use your Shapechanger trait to change into a beast, your size is medium or small.
Amphibious. You can breathe air and water while in any form.
Terran:  Members of this subrace have lived on land their entire lives and know how to get by amongst all other beings they have met in that time. Terran Hengeyokai know that their beast forms are considered cute to many Humanoids alike, and they will use it to their advantage. Generally they are social beings, but have learned the ins and outs to survive in these settings as well.
Ability Score Increase. Increase your Charisma score by 1.
Friendly Face. You have proficiency in the Persuasion or Deception skill.
Terrestrial Form. When you use your Shapechanger trait to turn into a beast or hybrid, your walking speed is increased by 10 feet as long as you aren’t wearing armor. When you use your Shapechanger trait to change into a beast, your size is medium or small.
Scurry. As a reaction when a creature misses you with an attack, you can move up to half of your speed to an unoccupied space.
Commentary: This is another 4e race, but this time we’ve gone and done more of a direct conversion. Because of this, a lot of the language used here is taken directly from the 4e version of the Hengeyokai. You can read more about how that race appeared in 4th edition here. On that note, in 4e the Hengeyokai has a dozen variants that each correspond to a very specific animal (dog, crab, or cat, for example), but in this rendition we’ve gone ahead and simplified things down to three categories in the spirit 5e’s design. This approach, while offering less specific flavor, aims to allow players who use this homebrew race to roleplay as an animal/humanoid hybrid with really any animal they’d like to. There are some edge cases where you still have ‘reflavor’ things as is often the case with 5e. For example, while a bat might not technically be an avian creature, the avian subrace provides the opportunity to experience the fantasy of shifting into a little flying creature at will regardless of the chosen animal’s real-world capabilities.

Some update on my DnD 3.5 Hengeyokai Druid
She's leveled up to 7th level (ECL: 8) and that means a few different things.
Personally, this means that she now has 4th level spells, but more importantly, it means that Fog-on-the-River grows up from being a wolf-sized fox to being a dire-wolf-sized fox.
And That's right, Lheru now can ride her fox around like a horse.
Also, last level her mark grew and now she's able to fire blasts of scorching blue fire. Her arsenal of magic items is also growing.
She now has:
Leather Armor +1
Sling +1
Cold Iron Spear +1
Heavy Darkwood Shield
Cloak of Natural Armor +2
Amulet of Health +2
Vibrant Purple Prism Ioun Stone (spell storing)
Eternal Wand of Flaming Sphere 2/day
Webstone Bag - produces three sling bullets per day that act as tanglefoot bags
Wand of Cure Light Wounds - 19 charges
Wand of Flaming Sphere - 4 charges
And I have plans on some spider-silk armor.
Feats:
Aberrant Dragonmark - Pass Without Trace 2/day
Craft Wondrous Item
Least Aberrant Dragonmark - Scorching Ray 2/day

Reading through Mask of the Mythos for Scion 2e (Which is. dumb because I'm not running Scion anytime soon sadly) and I know they were just trying to portray that Arkham in (Current year) just looks like any other mid sized town on the outside, but the specific mention of a boba tea place fucking sent me, its just so out of place with. Y'know. all the eldritch horror. why did that have to be mentioned, you fucking yassified the Miskatonic valley

ily 2004 vampire the masquerade bloodlines.
Ily janky ass unplayable combat mechanics and rushed ending levels entirely dependent on combat. Ily people trying their goddamn best to translate the pen and paper rules over to video game rules and still not Quite getting there but still having some things good to show for it. ily grungy disgusting streets and alleyways and sewers and warrens and bars and murder scenes and the strange people that inhabit them. Ily Confession and Asylum and Asp Hole and Last Round, and how distinct the bars are from each other aesthetically. Ily goth and punk fashion and music inspiration. Ily fangs showing in vampire npcs as they speak. Ily the absolute shitshow LA is and that you can see how the city is being pulled apart by the goddamn seams because of the brewing tensions and that no matter the outcome, the city loses.
I love you John DiMaggio's performance as Smiling Jack and his behind the scenes scheming and meddling and violence. I love you Grey Delisle’s performance as Jeanette and Therese and the reveal of the sisters for first time players. I love you incredibly animated character performances in both voice and character model, leaving iconic and lasting impressions from multiple characters. I love you detailed monster designs from Ming Xiao’s cephalopod war form, Andrei’s draconic Zulo form, the many szlachta of the sewers and their small details people would otherwise miss but are still there regardless, and Zygaena’s hammerhead shark hengeyokai form. I love you Pisha and her weird little organ pit in the abandoned hospital. I love you zombies in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery whose presences are never really explained. I love you ghouls who are both normal and Freaks: Mercurio and Knox and Romero and Vandal. I love you Nines' faint country accent. I love you Chunk <3
I love you asshole women Imalia and Damsel and Therese. I love you bitch men Gary and Isaac and Beckett. I love you Lacuna Coil playing during the credits. I love you Lecher Bitch playing in the Last Round. I love you Bloodlines Theme and the rest of Rik Schafer’s album. I love you Deb of Night. I love you utter terror of the Ocean House Hotel ghosts and Griffith Park werewolves. I love you malkavian insight and nosferatu isolation. LaCroix. I love you Rosa and her prophecies and the replayability of the game from both a clan and informed context perspective

Ok so the theory of Bor'Dor being some type of polymorphed dog is one that I hope is true b/c it would just be fantastic. But there's somethings that may not add up with what we know from his backstory if he was a polymorphed dog. Like he mentioned taking care of his sick brother and his family being sheep herders with addition of him already having weapons and a cart that got teleported with him.
So what if instead of being polymorphed what if he was some type of "shifter", though I don't mean in the lycanthropy sense. So that got me to thinking, is there a playable "shifter" race in 5e that could match with his backstory?
And there kind of is one! They're called Hengeyokai and they're actually super interesting. While it may not be a perfect fit, I do hope that Bor'Dor is some type of shifter. I just think it would be really interesting to have a shifting character that doesn't shift into a terrifying, bloodthirsty, combat based beast, (I'm looking at you Chetney <3), but just a regular herding dog. One that curls up and hides behind people, pees when scared, and likes herding sheep. Sound familiar to anybody? 😂

(also sorry for the long post I just really like this theory 😂)

More greyscale practice with, this time with Arkle :}
I didn't want to fill in the clothing in because this was mostly just for the line art tbh - I should draw him more often, he's surprisingly easy :0 I rarely draw anthro because it's a little tricky.

Hrodwyn of Groenewellan, sparrow-shifter (Hengeyokai): my brutal scoundrel rogue PC for a 4e Westmarches (with their sparrow form). The only reason I painted this is because I want a nice picture for their token LOL
If there's anything I'm more surprised about than how this turned out a lot better than I expected, it's how the scanned result is SO GOOD and accurate. I haven't touched watercolours since that one time in 2020 and, while I definitely made mistakes I regret, I think this is still pretty good given I don't paint with watercolours. It definitely helps that, apparently, the way I've been painting digitally is basically the watercolour method.
Oh, this was inspired by Pavane by Gabriel Faure too! It kept looping in my head before and while painting this. I think it fits the state of Hrodwyn and their ice-age home planet Hwytvid at the start of the campaign. And here's a sketch/reference page thingy of coming up with their design.

Ultimate TTRPG Rating System
There are many ways to rate TTRPGs, but this is mine: how easy is it to make a foxgirl? Ratings will be in the form of stars, given through an arcane and largely arbitrary methodology, with five being the maximum. Let's start with something pretty classic, the various editions of Dungeons & Dragons!
Original Dungeons & Dragons (1974)
No known way to make a foxgirl, but you can make a witch if you have one of the really early magazines for it. ⭐️
Basic Dungeons & Dragons (B/X, BECMI)
Sort of. There's the pooka in PC1 Tall Tales of the Wee Folk, but they can shapechange into any animal and do not have a humanoid form. However, they are very tricksy. ⭐️
Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
Now we're getting somewhere! The hengeyokai are introuced in Oriental Adventures (1985), and fit the important foxgirl tropes: shapeshifting and tricksiness. However, their humanoid form is either fully human or fully furry, so a few points are lost for that. Also I've rolled a bunch of characters and none have ever met the ability requirements for the race. Also you gotta be evil which is tough but fair. :( ⭐️⭐️⭐️
AD&D 2nd Edition
Again the only option I know of is the hengeyokai, but this time you have to look in one of the Monstrous Compendiums. ⭐️⭐️
Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition
Once again we turn to Oriental Adventures (2001) for the hengeyokai, this time without ability and alignment requirements. There's also rules for anthropomorphic animals in Savage Species, but they lack all the magical tricksiness of the foxgirl. This being 3rd Edition, there might be some obscure 3rd party foxgirl I'm not aware of, so please inform me if you know of one. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
D&D 4th Edition
The hengeyokai make an appearence in Dragon 404, which required one to be subscribed to D&D Insider, which seems like a pretty big ask (though I myself did). ⭐️⭐️
D&D 5th Edition
No hengeyokai yet, but the playtest for the 2024 Player's Handbook includes the ardling which could be foxlike, though with a full fox head and fur, and no shapeshifting or other innate trickery. ⭐️

I wonder if Hengeyokai will be Playable in D&D again. or a different playable fox race in d&d without palette swapping tabaxis. or will step on the toes of pathfinder folks with there kitsunes.
